2 Dear Friends and Customers, 2017 Professional Cattlemen s Bull Sale Cattle with Something EXTRA! A little over 40 years ago the son of a cotton farmer found himself trying to find his place in the agricultural world. He too thought his life s work would be in cotton, but boll weevils led to closure of the family cotton gin and after earning his business degree at Berry College he entered the banking world. While banking was his source of income he still was a farmer at heart. The transition from row cropping to cattle was not easy and he was searching for a cattle breed that would work well in our hot summers yet would produce the beef quality that many desired. After reading about Brangus he boarded a plane on Christmas Eve 1975 to fly to Missouri to purchase his first Brangus cattle. These cattle were some of the fi rst Brangus to come to North Georgia. These cattle worked well and helped allow us to sell bulls private treaty off the farm which were a big help to a part-time farmer raising three boys who had answered God s call for him to preach the gospel. The preacher became a pastor. Being a father, working for Farm Credit, and pastoring proved to be too much to continue raising registered Brangus. While the love and admiration for Brangus remained, he predominately raised crossbred Brangus cattle for the next 20 years and was joined in this passion by his sons as they grew up and began to raise their families. As we three brothers took a greater role in decision making, we began to put together a predominantly Brangus commercial herd of our own. We experimented with bulls from other breeds at times but always found ourselves coming back to what works. The functional nature of the Brangus breed is essential to our profitablilty as a farm. Our primary source of bulls through the years has been the fine people at Salacoa Valley Farms owned by David Vaughan. His commitment to the breed and his willingness to stand behind his animals made that a great relationship. During our time of buying animals from Salacoa Valley, we met Ben Spitzer and his father, John Spitzer. Not believing in luck, we believe that meeting was providential! In time, our desire to continually improve our farm, was joined with a need for Spitzer Ranch in Fair Play, South Carolina, to develop a new Cooperator. So, in 2010 we resurrected the H+ brand and returned to the ranks of the registered Brangus breeders. Ben later left Salacoa Valley and presented us with the opportunity to pasture some Spitzer Ranch cattle for a few years. During this time we bought some females from Salacoa Valley and Spitzer Ranch and began following the Spitzer Ranch genetic plan and consigning bulls in the Spitzer Ranch Sale. Two years ago, John and Patricia Spitzer approached us about purchasing their cow herd and we felt honored and thought it was an opportunity of a lifetime. We want to thank John, Patricia and Ben for their hard work and genetic selection; cattle like these were not developed in one breeding. They took generations of calculated breeding to proven sires and meticulous care to develop the herd to this point. We will continue the progress! We also want to recognize our Dad, Michael Hunt, who set out over 40 years ago headed to Missouri on Christmas Eve not knowing it would bring us to where we are today, but I think he s glad it did! We certainly are! With great enthusiasm and much humility we are blessed to offer for public auction the product of the Spitzer genetic plan and the stewardship of the Hunt family! 4 RESERVE SALE POLICY In order for us to offer you quality bulls at auction year after year, we must insure that we recover the costs of developing quality bulls. We pledge to offer you a quality animal in a fair auction environment. We do this in a straightforward manner by letting you know our base price up front. All bulls will be offered for auction with a minimum sale price of $2,500. The high bidder as determined by the auctioneer will be the purchaser of the bull. However, no bull offered in this sale will ever be offered for sale at less that the beginning bid price. If any bulls are not sold they will be available for $2,700 immediately following the auction and will remain for sale at that price on our farm until sold private treaty. RETAINED-INTEREST BULLS We reserve the right to retain a 50% revenue sharing semen interest on any bull sold. Bulls are in your possession and under your control for natural service and you get 100% of the salvage value. We will continue to own half interest in bulls for the purpose of collecting and marketing semen, as well as using semen in our herds. While it is unlikely large amounts of semen will be collected or sold for many bulls, we need that as an option on bulls sold. As a buyer and at your option, you can also have a 50% revenue sharing semen interest and participate in revenue from semen sales. We have developed a Bull Partnership Agreement spelling out further details. Buying a retained-interest bull obligates you to that agreement only for semen collection and sales. To avoid any misunderstandings, if you have any questions at all, please ask. If you chose not to be involved with semen sales, we still reserve the right to collect and market semen on any retained interest bull. Lots, 1, 2, 3 all sell with Hunt s Brangus retaining ½ ownership, buyer gets ½ ownership and full possession. Bulls are cataloged by sale order and sell in sale order based on the highest (CBI). GOLDEN RULE CUSTOMER SERVICE When you purchase an animal from our program you become part of us and have an option to become part of our future sales. We are committed to you as a customer and deliver service with each sale. You will automatically be updated with current on your bull purchases and the females sired by those bulls become candidates to return as part of our Customer Commercial Brangus Female Sales. We pledge to conduct our business in a manner that demands providing only the best in genetics and services that make you a repeat customer. We defi nitely provide VALUE ADDED GENETICS and strive to provide VALUE ADDED SERVICE. CALVING-EASE BULLS Over the years we have become more and more conservative on which bulls get fl agged as Calving-Ease Bulls. We have adopted the philosophy that it is better for us to have stricter guidelines than for you to be sorry at calving time. Obviously there are no guarantees for preventing diffi cult births in heifers. Even the most proven Calving-Ease Bulls of any breed will sire a large calf every so often. However, this information is meant to serve as a guide for managing risk of calving diffi culty in your fi rst-calf females. Our goal is to help you eliminate heifer calving problems to the best of our ability. REMEMBER: Compare Brangus to Brangus No across-breed EPD comparisons can be made! Bulls indicated by the calving-ease fl ag symbol in their data block are considered to be low-risk bulls for calving difficulty. BUT, let s get real on calving ease! Our calving-ease bulls are meant to be used to breed virgin heifers such that they will have little or no calving problems with their fi rst calf. The other bulls in our catalog are very appropriate for use on cows that have already had at least one calf. There are almost no bulls in the entire Brangus breed that cannot be used on mature cows and have no calving difficulties. In fact, because the correlation with size at birth and growth is extremely high, you would be losing growth (and weaning weight) if you use our designated calving-ease bulls on mature cows. In general, always use our bulls fl agged as Calving-Ease Bulls on virgin heifers for their fi rst calf and use the other bulls on any mature cows in your herd. On the other hand, a calving-ease bull to breed virgin heifers can be a God send. 2 Hunt s Brangus

5 LOT ANIMAL NAME Bulls designated with the Calving-ease Flag are felt to be Low- Risk Bulls for calving difficulty and are suitable for use on fi rst-calf females. 1. Calving Ease Direct EPD is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indictating greater calving ease in fi rst-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. 2. Birth weight EPD predicts calf size and calving ease. 3. Weaning weight EPD predicts preweaning growth potential. 4. Yearling weight EPD predicts overall growth potential and post-weaning gain. 5. Milk EPD predicts the maternal contribution a bull passes to his daughters for milk production and mothering ability. 6. Total maternal EPD predicts the overall weaning weight of calves from daughters of a bull due to growth potential as well as milk production and mothering ability. 7. Calving Ease Maternal is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in fi rstcalf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. 8. Scrotal circumference EPD predicts testicle size. 9. Ribeye area EPD predicts muscling. 10. Percent intramuscular fat EPD predicts marbling and quality grade. 11. Fat EPD predicts external fat thickness and yield grade. 12. To make it easier to evaluate, the percentile ranking is shown below each individual EPD. This is a great way to understand where the individual ranks in the breed for that particular EPD. For example, where it shows 10%, this means that particular EPD value is in the highest, or TOP 10%, of all non-parent bulls in the entire breed. (A 10% for BW, however, means lowest, or lightest.) 13. Actual birth weight within 24 hours of birth. 14. Weaning weight adjusted to 205 days of age and for age of dam. 15. Ranking of individual 205-day adjusted weaning weight in relation to average adjusted weaning weight of weaning contemporary group of this calf. The contemporary group has an average ratio of Average daily gain (pounds per day) during Hunt s Brangus 140-day performance growth test. 17. Lifetime weight per day of age (actual weight divided by days of age) at the end of Hunt s Brangus 140-day performance growth test. 18. Ranking of individual WDA in relation to average WDA of the entire test group, which has an average ratio of Yearling weight adjusted to 365 days of age and for age of dam. 20. Ranking of individual adjusted 365-day yearling weight in relation to the average adjusted yearling weight of yearling contemporary group. The contemporary group has an average ratio of Yearling frame score adjusted to 365-days of age. 22. Yearling scrotal circumference (testicle size measured in centimeters) adjusted to 365-days of age. 23. (CBI). The CBI is an index which combines values for low birth weight EPD and high yearling weight EPD into one value. This Index has a highest achievable numeric value of 148 and goes down from there. Bulls with a higher numeric value for CBI would be expected to sire calves with lighter birth weights and yet heavier weaning and yearling weights.
