It takes courage to step up and put yourself and your business up against your peers and we must acknowledge those who have taken the leap. Amy White, Dairy Trainee of the Year for West Coast/Top of the South region, writes of her experiences as a national finalist on page 40. I also talked to Bernie & April Cox about their experience in the Sharemilker/Equity Farm of the Year for the Wairarapa region on page 7. Keryn Phillips June is award season for Holstein Friesian New Zealand and in this issue you will see the winners and finalists of five competitions that the Association runs for the membership every year. At the Annual Conference at the end of June more winners will be announced from farm production awards, youth awards, show winners to sire of the year and many more. Holstein Friesian New Zealand covers every aspect of the dairy industry with the awards available. Best of luck to all who have entered a competition. This issue is the last to focus on breeders in a region with the Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa under the spotlight this time. I thank all the breeders for taking the time to talk to me about their operation. It seems to me that the Hawkes Bay/Wairarapa breeders always have their hand in something a little more than just dairying - even if it is a small herd of beefies or sheep as a side line business. In weather reports, one always hears about how the lower east coast of the North Island is about to, or has been hammered by wind from such-and-such storm, but when I spoke to breeders about it, they just shrugged it off it is just a natural obstacle that is built into their everyday business. As usual, it has been a struggle to keep the articles in a small enough area to fit in the magazine - over the years I could have written and book or two about each region! It has been a fascinating journey around the country and the challenge for the future is to ensure we keep the depth and richness of breeding Holstein Friesians to the fore. We celebrate yet another young bull graduating from our progeny test joint venture, Genetic Leaders, with the bull Maire Oman Franklin. The success of Genetic Leaders as a programme is outstanding and we must thank all breeders that have helped to prove the young bulls over the years by purchasing the semen and having the subsequent daughters herd tested and measured for Traits Other than Production. Please remember that Holstein Friesian New Zealand receives royalties from semen sold from any proven bulls that have graduated from Genetic Leaders - your support through the purchase of this semen is appreciated. We look at the extreme brood cow, SRA Monowai Belv Dawn GP84 33*ET, New Zealand's highest awarded Star Brood cow. She has produced many daughters, grand-daughters, great grand-daughters... the seventh generation descendants from Dawn are being born this year. Guest writers from ABS and NZAEL discuss the best options for your ET programme and give you the opportunity to understand how to read breeding values and that not all high breeding values are good. Enjoy. Keryn Phillips Editor Protein for the Future Profit for Life

5 President s Column As another financial year has drawn to a close and as members receive their annual report, we can take time to reflect on the year that has been. A solid performance year was marked in dollar terms by a small profit. Membership saw a net rise of 29 members to 881, continuing on from previous years. In services used by members we saw increases in both classification and registration. Good participation by members in competitions and a continued dominance in the show ring, all add up to a very satisfying year for HFNZ. From a Council point of view, I hope this successful year is a Doug Courtman reflection of the work Councillors and staff do throughout the year to promote the breed and needs of members. I hope my view that Councillors have worked hard to promote a harmonious relationship with members is correct. Council has been keen to consult with members, seeking feedback before implementing changes in service, or changes to by-laws. Membership feedback is important on topical issues, so if the opportunity arises I encourage you to express your opinion. Another opportunity for members to provide feedback or ideas is at the Annual General Meeting. I look forward to meeting as many members as possible at this year s AGM in Auckland. It is your chance to comment on the state of our Association. At this year s AGM we have two invited speakers to add interest. Dr Jeremy Bryant will address the meeting on his work within the NZ Animal Evaluation Unit and Denis Aitken will update us on his recent trip to Denmark to attend the World Classification Workshop. Four judging schools were held around the country this autumn, overseen by Wayne Taylor and Graham Stewart. These schools were well attended with a good mix of senior and associate judges, novices and interested members. Judging schools are of supreme importance. They are about setting standards of performance that we, HFNZ, expect our senior judges to meet and setting the level that associate judges and novices need to aspire to. HFNZ backs the commitment made by judges in attending these schools, by insisting A&P shows use judges from our approved lists and, where possible, promoting their availability for overseas appointments. We are also encouraging larger shows to make use of associate judges, to give them exposure and experience alongside senior judges in the show ring. At the time of writing this report we are holding a series of HFBoost field days around the country. HFBoost provides an opportunity for breeders to receive genomic information on their future breeding stock, at a discounted rate in conjunction with CRV Ambreed. The follow up stage is HFTurboBoost which invites selected heifers into a mating programme aimed at supplying bulls for our Genetic Leaders programme. HFTurboBoost gives breeders another contract option outside the large AI companies whilst supporting HFNZ. The Ministry of Primary Industries has embarked on a consultative programme over the relaxing of legislative regulations governing the operations of LIC. All dairy farmers have been invited to reply to a survey online, which I hope as many members as possible responded to. At Council level we put together a submission in response, outlining some concerns we have over this proposal, on behalf of our members. This report sees the completion of my second year as Association President. I trust that members see the work, Council and I undertake as having the best interests of members, the Association, and the Holstein Friesian breed at heart. Over the past year we have bedded in the new nine person Council. This has proved to be an efficient and cost effective model to run our Association. The National Database transfer continues to consume an enormous amount of our time. One positive of this is the opportunity to work closely with industry groups. This could have long term benefits for Holstein Friesian NZ as we strive to maintain our relevance to the wider dairy industry and add value to the pedigree status. I believe that HFNZ is in good heart and well placed to benefit members into the future. 6 Hawkes Bay & Wairarapa Sauvignon Breeders Tucked in under the Ruahine and Tararua ranges in the lower North Island are the Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa Branches of Holstein Friesian New Zealand. The two regions are known as fine wine provinces with the Hawkes Bay better known for its reds such as the sauvignon cabernet and the Wairarapa is known for its white wines, including the sauvignon blanc. The two regions are also known for breeding fine Holstein Friesian cows. The Hawkes Bay Branch has members from Napier in the north and Woodville in the south. It has many long serving and wellknown studs most notably that of Te Kura and Mokoia. The Te Kura stud, esptablished in 1969 by Colin & Ann Thomas, was home of the record production cow Te Kura Lin Kathleen EX5. Amongst her many records was her 1983/84 record of 10,625 litres, 516kg (4.9%) fat at the age of 10 years. The Mokoia stud, established by Fred & Marilyn Blatchford, has been developed into a herd of top dairy quality animals with high production. Mokoia has also won three Royal Show championships. Fred has been, and still is, a mentor to many a young breeder in the region. Wairarapa was the stepping stone for the Holstein Friesian breed s entry into the North Island. Lawyer Coleman Phillips of Carterton purchased bulls Prince of Orange and Duke of Alva from the Grigg family in Canterbury in Coleman Phillips later became the first President of the New Zealand Holstein Friesian Association in I venture to predict that in a few years the Holstein will be the principle class of cow to be found in the dairy herds of Wairarapa, said a well-known Holstein breeder to a Daily Times reporter. Why. Two or three years ago the Holstein was unknown, and look to-day how it has sprung into favour. Nearly every farmer seems to have Ruanui Rob & Stephanie Trainor, Dannevirke The Ruanui herd of 180 cows can be found at the base of the Ruahine ranges. Rob & Stephanie own a total 182 hectares with the cows on the 140 hectare home farm, Twenty five hectares of that is river bed that is ineffective and fenced off to meet the clean streams accord, Rob said, explaining that the spring-calving herd is milked on an 80 hectare milking platform. A small flock of sheep and beef cattle are run on the rest of the farm. Rob & Stephanie are the third generation to farm the property, first purchased by Stephanie s grandfather. The beef cattle include 4 WINTER 2014 nzholstein recognised that it is something more than idle talk when Holstein enthusiasts sound the praises of their pet breed of dairy cow. In the near future there is going to be some first rate Holsteins bred in the Wairarapa. (Wairarapa Daily Times. (21 February 1912). The popular cow: The value of the Holstein. Volume LXIV, page 6.) The prediction made by the unnamed correspondent was found to be true with many early importations both from the United States and Australia having a considerable influence on early studs. Names like Ahikouka bred by OA Cadwallader, Koromiko (MJ Parker), Dalefield (KG Fairbrother), Tarata (LS Gallon), Woodlea (WS Gallon and later grandson K Parker), Turepo (CA Knutson) and Manganui (Upston) can be found in many pedigrees of cows today. Wairarapa breeders have had considerable success at shows over the years, including two-time Royal Show Champion and threetime North Island Champion Woodlea Diamond in the mid-1930 s, The Koromiko cows of MJ Parker dominated during the 1940 s and 50 s sharing the honours with LS Gallon and his Tarata cattle. The Wairarapa Branch has members from Featherston in the south to Pahiatua, just minutes from Woodville. Well-known studs from the region include the Arran stud of Selwyn Donald, Summerhays (Trevor Schroder) and the Woodlea herd still continues, in a smaller capacity, from Hamish & Linda McLennan. Wairarapa Branch is hosting the 2015 Annual Conference. Although the Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa Branches are amongst the smallest in New Zealand (18 members in Hawkes Bay and 31 in Wairarapa), they are both regions that hold regular competitions, meetings and social gatherings ensuring the strength of belief in the Holstein Friesian breed. Meet some of the locals a mob of recipient cows with embryos implanted for their dairy breeding programme and the remainder are fattened for market. The young animals are raised and the herd is wintered on a 40 hectare run-off. Pretty much type and production, is how Rob described his breeding philosophy. They use predominantly North American bulls and do not focus on Breeding Worth as much, We do have some SR [Supplementary Register] cows left over from the commercial herd that was bred to high BW, Rob said. Amongst his requirements for breeding, Rob looks first at conformation and then the protein and fat breeding values, Conformation is important they are nice to look at and it should lead to longer lasting cows.

7 Hawkes Bay & Wairarapa Rob defended his decision to change from high BW to North American genetics, We lose BW but we don t lose production and we don t lose fertility and there are no issues with feet and legs, he said of the common beliefs about overseas genetics. He and Stephanie have imported embryos from Canada to develop their breeding programme. They purchased five out of Raeland Leduc Wilhelmina EX-92 6*. They had four pregnancies to Braedale Goldwyn two heifers and two bulls. The heifers calved for the first time this year one classified VG87 and the other VG85, Rob said. They are expecting calves to be born this year to Enfuego GW Actress-ET VG-88(CAN), who is from the same family as the well- known sire Maple-Downs-I G W Atwood. Rob & Stephanie are also developing cow families with purchases from Waipiri with HSS Talent Soul EX and from the Barton family with Kauri Glen Cindy EX. The herd is fed two kilograms Viterra pellets a day in the shed, as well as turnips during summer and topped up by silage and baleage. Production is just over 500kg milk-solids per cow. At the time of writing, they had been milking 200 predominantly Holstein Friesian cows on 79 effective hectares on a seasonal system milking from 1 August to 20 May. The Stone-Ridge breeding philosophy looked at, Protein, udder overall, litres, fertility, overall type and production, Hazel said. They aimed to keep type and production even, Good udders and good legs make good cows, she explained, If they can walk it and if they can eat it, then they make pretty good cows. They bought the herd 27 years ago when they were employed as 50/50 sharemilkers at the last moment (1st May). They purchased a small herd of 50 cows and then built the herd to 150 cows by purchasing individual cows at sales. The herd was originally crossed to Ayrshire, until Darron & Hazel started to look at production, We ve been Friesian ever since, Hazel said. The herd was fed on meal via an in-shed feeding system, with an average two kilograms each day seasonally, although during a tough spring they raised it to three kilograms when needed. Peas and barley were fed during calving. They own a 46 hectare support block and lease another 30 hectares. Hazel explained that the calves are raised from weaning on one block and the heifers are on the other. For the last three years, the herd had produced an average 95,000kg milk-solids, We will achieve just over 100,000kg this year, Hazel said. Enfuego GW Actress-ET VG-88(CAN) Stone-Ridge Darron & Hazel Schroder, Pahiatua Darron & Hazel have sold and just moved off the farm they owned for 16 years, going into partnership with their daughter and sonin-law, April & Bernie Cox (Tararua), milking 350 cows with the intention to increase the herd to 400. The partnership has bought Trevor Schroder s (Summerhays) farm. When asked about the stand-out cow families in the herd, Hazel immediately said Sally. Stone-Ridge Fire Beda S2F GP83, otherwise known as Sally, has developed from a high BW cow family with influences including Aurora Mountain Donor and Top Deck KO Pierre in her ancestry. The five-year-old Telesis Euon Firenze daughter has a BW 205, PW 411 and LW 454. She has a young son in at CRV Ambreed. Her Talent daughter is also a smasher, Hazel said. Stone-Ridge For Penny S1F VG87 is from a strong conformation family as well as being the top two, three and four-year-old for production each year. She has consistently produced between % for protein in all three lactations. She was also the Supreme Champion at the Masterton A&P Show as a three-year-old. nzholstein WINTER

9 Parkville Paul & Diana Capes, Eketahuna Paul & Diana had an interesting, but difficult, introduction to dairying when they converted half their sheep and beef property. For the first five years they milked their herd of 165, increased to 365, cows in their neighbour s dairy, who also had a herd to milk. It meant extremely early mornings with milking starting at 2.30am. They converted the second half of the farm to dairy when they built a new dairy central to all areas of the property. They now milk 750 cows on 252 effective hectares with around 550 grazed off the farm during winter and the remainder (autumn calving, lates and empties that they want to keep) milked through. The herd is made up of 50% registered Holstein Friesian and 50% registered jersey, I don t cross, I like to keep straight lines. I don t want liquorice allsorts, Paul said. The farm is supported by a block at Greytown, where they grow 48 hectares of maize every year. The herd is fed the maize, supported by palm kernel, but the main source of food is grass, Grass is king. The herd s production is around kg milk-solids. Paul is the first to admit that he is very particular about the genetics in his herd, I am driven by having good cows. Production and type is paramount to his breeding philosophy, I aim to breed top performing, top type cows that will last. The Holstein Friesian portion of the herd is bred using predominantly Canadian genetics through Semex and some CRV Ambreed sires. Of the Semex bulls, Paul really likes the steadiness of the proof of bulls marketed year after year. I want that accuracy in all bulls, Paul said noting that there can be young bulls in the New Zealand population that fly high for one season and then crash. One family he has had some success in breeding descends from Parkville Piere Rio S1F GP82, who ended her seventh (and final) lactation producing 7,495 litres, 313kg (4.2%) protein and 346kg (4.6%) fat in 271 days. Her Aurora Donor Favour daughter was in the 2010 Discovery Project; Parkville Fav Roxy S2F GP82 has a BW 227, PW 558 and LW 684. Heifers from this cow family are being contract mated this year. The Capes have had show success with Parkville Storm Pat S3F EX who won her age group at NZ Dairy Event a couple of years ago for breed and all breeds. TSM Searle family, Masterton Richard & Megan Searle with sons Damon and Simon are the S in TSM, which is an equity partnership with Graham Tulloch (T) and Vaughan Marfell (M). The partnership leases two dairy farms and a dairy grazing/sheep farm plus a number of support blocks. Tararua Hawkes Bay & Wairarapa The Searles focus on the dairy operations with Damon managing one farm (420 cows on 165 effective hectares) and Simon the other (700 cows on 230 effective hectares). Richard & Megan help out where they are needed. When it comes to breeding, all have an input - Damon is more focused on production, whilst Simon places an emphasis on type. Overall they look for cows that will put money in the bank. It has got to be a functional cow feet and legs, udder, shed temperament, milking speed and adaptability to milking. We don t want negative shed traits, Richard said as he explained what they look for in a bull. BW is not important. If it happens, it happens, Richard said, saying that it was more important to have milk in the vat. Richard enjoys the challenge of breeding, It s exciting to see the heifers every year. You get failures, he acknowledged, If you can t hack the upsets then you should be doing something else. They use a large number of bulls as they don t like to put all their eggs in one basket. We had a good run with Ladino Park Talent- Imp-ET, they were all peas in a pod, but not human friendly, Richard said. Other bulls they have had success with include Comestar Leader and Top Deck KO Pierre. Within the TSM herds, the Searle s have a small, nucleus registered herd. It is within this herd that they use higher priced semen and into which they have purchased external genetics including cows from Tahora, Sherraine, Fairview and Muritai to develop cow families from. The cows in the nucleus are incorporated into the larger herd and do not receive any special treatment. Richfield Shott Medea-ET VG86, one of three ET sisters out of Sherraine Astre Meredith EX2, has just completed her three-yearold lactation with 8,678 litres, 281kg (3.2%) protein and 344kg (4.0%) fat in 301 days. Of their own breeding the best cow family is the B family. TSM Leader Bertha S0F EX2 is the foundation cow for the family she produced over 1,020kg of milk-solids in 2012/13 as an 11-yearold. She has two Talent daughters that reflect both her type and production - TSM Talent Bessie-ET S1F VG88 and TSM Talent Beulah S1F VG85. Beulah produced 10,285 litres, 363kg (3.5%) protein and 373kg (3.6%) fat in 305 days at six years. Bernie & April Cox, Carterton Bernie & April have just completed their third and final season as lower order sharemilkers. They were milking 330 spring calving cows on 100 hectares. When they first arrived on the farm, there was no established breeding programme. They put the herd to Holstein Friesians, through Semex, looking for positive protein percent and medium-sized cows. Unfortunately they won t have a chance to see their breeding come to effect as the first calves will nzholstein WINTER

10 Hawkes Feature Article Bay & Wairarapa be entering the herd this year. All we can rely on are the comments coming from neighbours and the farm consultant that the line of heifers coming through are looking really good and are the best in the district, Bernie said. They have started to build their own herd and have about 30 registered mixed age cows, most purchased, and about 20 registered young animals under the Tararua prefix. Bernie purchased his first animal from Maire Farms when he was working for Craig and Chantelle Rowe. Maire Pierre Daze VG87 has won the highest producing five-year-old for the Wairarapa region following the 2011/12 season When it comes to breeding their own animals, Bernie & April have an emphasis on production and health traits, protecting fertility and somatic cells, Striving for a profitable dairy cow, completing 8-10 lactations, easy calving, good components and type, Bernie said, I have a strong belief as a senior judge that good type cows last longer and are efficient producers. When Bernie s parents, Charlie & Briar, sold their herd and farm, Charlie was still keen to have a hand in breeding and so purchased embryos out of Sutom Raider Spirit EX-3E 12*. Bernie is proud to be breeding descendants from those embryos, including Tararua Ignighter Special VG87 and her daughter Tararua Dempsey Sacha. Bernie & April competed in the Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the April & Bernie Cox Year this year and won the regional Federated Farmers leadership award. We will definitely do that competition again, Bernie said. He described the process of judging for the regional competition: A group of judges visit the farm and competitors must do a presentation and then the judges look around the farm. He said that the judges provide feedback that allows the competitors to improve on aspects of their operation and, if successful, a second group of judges visits the farm. Again feedback is supplied. This was for the regional competition. It makes you sharpen your skills, Bernie said. The competition has made the couple look at their business plan and showed them ways to track goals. Bernie admitted that it was a fairly intense experience but was well worth it. Bernie & April are looking forward to entering the new venture with Darron & Hazel Schroder (Stone-Ridge). 11 Colvale Gordon & Dale Collie, Carterton Dale describes Gordon as a traditional farmer. He milks 130 cows on 60 hectares and operates the business as a one man band. The dairy farm is supported by a couple of run-offs where they grow oats and maize and the dry stock are raised. They have been on the farm since 1970 when they first started as sharemilkers and the farm was one of three (total 121 hectares) on which they milked over 200 cows, they later purchased the farm. The farm is summer dry and because of this they start calving in early July. The herd is usually dried off late April/early May and is wintered off the farm. Good quality, quiet, good temperament, Gordon explained what he is looking for in his ideal cow, She must produce well and behave well. I won t put up with anything that won t toe the line. My cows are known for their quietness they all come for a scratch in the shed. The genetics in the herd are a mix of CRV Ambreed, Semex and Genetic Enterprises. Gordon has used a lot of his own homebred bulls. Bulls that have had influence on the herd over the years include Middlevale Pablo, He stuck around for a while, Charnwood Lin Peter as well as bulls from his father-in-law (Dalefield) and Vic Gates (Belvedere) herds. He also had a good line of Hanoverhill Raider cows, They produced well; they were the good type of cow that I like having. Looked good and were quiet. One suspects that Gordon is a master of the understatement, especially when talking about his animals, The heifers are looking nice, we ll see how they go. Good type animals. Both Gordon and Dale are very involved in the Wairarapa Holstein Friesian Branch in fact Dale has been secretary for over 20 years, I will be planning my third annual conference next year. They are also both past Presidents of the Wairarapa A&P Association and are both life members. When it comes to showing Dale says that she just does the paperwork. Dad used to go to a lot of shows but Gordon and I usually only go to the Masterton and Wairarapa shows, she said, I have never missed a show. Gordon runs the cattle section of the Wairarapa show. Gordon said that he does enjoy showing, but in the last couple of Hawkes Bay & Wairarapa in the herd, purely for production. The Holstein Friesians brought in an average 501kg milk-solids and the Jerseys 460kg, this year. Close to the end of the 2013/14 season they have already beaten their previous farm record of 103,000kg milk-solids at 107,000kg, but Lance is quietly hoping to bring it in at 108,000kg. It has been a cracker season this year, he said, despite weather conditions bringing about power outages. They purchased the Denlyn herd from Karen s parents seven years ago and have developed cow families from there. One of their favourites is Landell Donor Rosa VG85, from Denlyn Magley Ronnie GP82. She is a good, strong cow with Landell Donor Rosa VG85 the capacity to milk, plus she is one of those cows that breeds well, said Lance. Her Gillette Stanleycup daughter, Landell Stanleycup Rosa, did well at NZ Dairy Event earlier this year. Stirling Pierre Kinky GP84 is a standout purchase of Lance & Karen s. She did 744 kilograms on three quarters this year, Karen said of the rising 10-year-old. With the next step being farm or equity ownership, Lance & Karen are starting to build up their herd numbers through an intensive flushing programme. SRB Denlyn Donor Holly, still in the herd as a rising 13-year-old, has been flushed. Over her 10 lactations to date Holly has averaged 485kg milk-solids with 3.8% protein and 4.2% fat. Her two Valentein Raul daughters, Halo VG86 and Holly GP83, have been standout descendants of this cow. Lance & Karen are expecting her embryos by Stenleycup and Pierstein Talent Rolls Royce to hit the ground later this year. They have also flushed nine-year-old Aranui Don Clara Calvi VG87 to Gillette Windbrook and Comestar Lavanguard. Calvi completed her top production to date at six years producing 9,398 litres, 321kg (3.4%) protein and 380kg (4.0%) fat in 305 days. Lance & Karen purchased a block of land last year and it is on this property that they are raising the Photo supplied years he hasn t really had any stand out animals, We haven t got the numbers with a smaller herd and it is harder for them to stand out. Landell Lance Williams & Karen Fitzgerald, Featherston Lance & Karen are 50/50 sharemilkers milking 270 spring calving cows on 75 effective hectares. The young animals are run on a 56 hectares support block. The herd is made up of predominantly Holstein Friesian, 30% Jersey and 10 Ayrshires. They will be cutting back on the Jersey population and increasing the Holstein Friesians surplus calves. They also, in partnership with Karen s brother, raise Holstein Friesian bulls for meat and to use over their herd. Daughter Zara (7) is a keen farmer already, and no doubt sister Holly (4) and brother Padraig (15 months) will be following in her footsteps. 13 SRA Monowai Belv Dawn GP83 33*ET at 16 years Cow Spotlight SRA Monowai Belv Dawn GP84 33*ET Photo supplied SRA Monowai Belv Dawn GP84 is New Zealand s highest rated Star Brood cow with 33 stars at the end of her name. A total 31 milking daughters and 12 sons contributed to her stars and since it was calculated last year, Dawn s last two daughters have started lactations. Dawn is short on ancestry with only three recorded dams behind her, but her effect on the future generations is well and truly set as a gold standard. Of the 192 cow milking herd at Monowai, about 100 are descendants of Dawn with another 30 in-calf two-year-olds expected to enter the herd this year. The seventh generation from Dawn is being born on the farm of Alan & Linda Powell, Tamahere, Waikato, this year. Bought as a two-year-old at a grade sale in Matamata, Alan was interested in Dawn as she held a mating contract. She was big and capacious, Alan explained, Her udder looked a bit suspect, being a [SRD Dawsons] Belvedere, but it didn t get any worse over time. She was born in 1996 and died last year at 16 years of age; unfortunately she had cancer of the udder. She completed eight lactations during her career and was later used solely as a brood cow to develop the cow family through MOET and IVP. Over the eight lactations Dawn produced an average 6,199 litres, 231kg (3.7%) protein and 285kg (4.6%) fat over 246 days. She has a Production Worth (PW) 528 and a Breeding Worth (BW) 113. She is ranked to have the seventh highest reliability for BW at 89% - unusual for any cow to get such a high reliability. Over her lifetime Dawn had 42 daughters and 31 sons through the prodigious use of ET as well as AI. Of the daughters, 33 have entered the milking herd and 14 sons have gone to breeding companies. She has 79 grand-daughters contributing, or about to contribute, to the gene pool, as well as 22 grandsons in AI. In the family, 83 female descendants have been classified, most as two-year-olds, with an average classification GP83 (the range was G79 to VG88). One cow, Monowai Hoax Diana-ET S2F, classified VG85 as a two-year-old and re-classified Excellent at five years. The good thing about ET is that you can do five sires in a year, Alan said. He initially started to use MOET to develop the family, but has found better success with IVP. These days Alan works on having his ET calves born every autumn. We have a better conception rate and, in fact, better success all round with autumn-born calves, Alan explained saying the calves have a better start in growth and fertility having an extra couple of months. He does ET yearling heifers to ensure faster genetic gain. When it comes to sire selection, I do chase BW but I like to protect type, fertility and feet. Alan has used a range of sires when breeding, including genomic sires in recent years. Sons The better known of Dawn s sons include SRB Monowai VP Dozit-ET, SRB Monowai Durbridge, SRB Monowai Extasy Dallas and Monowai Hoax Dodge-ET S1F. Danyel Hosto of CRV Ambreed reported that Dozit and Dallas have been exported to Mexico, South America (Equador & Chile), South Africa and Australia. A further 25 descendants have also gone to LIC and CRV Ambreed. Alan noted that the bulls have had limited success once accepted by breeding companies, Some have got close, but they haven t got in. Simon Worth, bull acquisition manager for LIC said, We did have one, [Monowai FM] Dealer, who would have made a young bull team if he had made semen I was gutted about that. Alan added, He had good genomics and good TOP but unfortunately he couldn t produce semen. A half-brother to Dealer, Farside M Illustrious S3F son, Monowai FI Delta S2F is also at LIC awaiting his daughter proof. Simon noted that Dawn s grandson SRC Monowai Hail Doug-ET was one of the better bulls from the cow family, particularly for fertility, with a breeding value CRV Ambreed and LIC are still purchasing bulls from the cow family. This year there are eight contracts with each company. Daughters Although Dawn s daughter, SRB Monowai Elliot Dollar, was never successfully mated to AI, due to MOET work carried out on her as a yearling, Alan says that he has attained some success from the five ET progeny and feels this branch of Dawn s family could have gone a lot further if Dollar had been able to get in-calf. Dollar is the dam of the high fertility sire, Doug. One of Dollar s daughters, by Top Deck KO Pierre, Monowai KO Dawn-ET S2F, completed five lactations with her best as a six-yearold producing 8,168 litres, 317kg (3.9%) protein and 350kg (4.3%) fat in 305 days. From KO Dawn, a Culglen Daunt Blackout daughter has to date completed three lactations and produced 7,933 litres, 310kg nzholstein WINTER

14 Cow Spotlight (3.9%) protein and 367kg (4.6%) fat in 279 days. This season she has a BW 217, PW 329 and LW 291. KO Dawn has another daughter, by Elliotts Larrikin, who has produced well with solid components producing 6,233 litres, 247kg (4.0%) protein and the same again for fat in 294 days in her fourth lactation. Possibly the most prolific of Dawn s daughters is SRB Monowai VP Diablo-ET GP83. By Valden Curious Paladium, this cow (full sister to the sire Dozit) has two in-milk daughters and provided eight sons to AI. She has completed nine lactations with her best as a fiveyear-old producing 9,446 litres, 325kg (3.4%) protein and 394kg (4.2%) fat in 300 days. She is still milking in the herd at the age of 14 years. Alan said that she is looking likely to follow in the footsteps of Dawn and succumb to cancer. SRB Monowai VP Diablo-ET GP83 Her Fairmont Mint-Edition daughter Monowai 11-4 S2F VG85 is sitting pretty with a BW 212, PW 203 and Lactation Worth (LW) 245. Alan took a punt and crossed Diablo to a jersey sire for one mating. The subsequent generations have been bred back to Holstein Friesian and from this line there has been some success with the bull Delta, as mentioned earlier, who is four generations from Diablo. Diablo s branch of Dawn s descendants is a favourite of Alan s. Viewing the herd in the paddock, Alan went from dam to daughter to daughter saying This is as close as you can get to the perfect cow for me. Dawn s great grand-daughter Monowai Banq Dot-ET S0F VG88 has completed seven lactations to date. The rising 10-year-old maintains a BW 202, PW 315 and LW 541. Monowai Banq Dot-ET S0F VG88 Dot has had four daughters that all reflect her high indices. Monowai Frost Doty-ET S1F VG85, dam of bulls Delta and Dealer, has a BW 232, PW 357 and LW 388 and her VG85 full sister has similar indices. Their half-sister by Blakelock MD Knight S3F, Monowai S1F VG85 has nearly completed her first lactation with a BW 218, PW 270 and LW 279. At the April herd test she had produced 5,757 litres, 201kg (3.5%) protein and 239kg (4.2%) fat in 246 days. Monowai Frost Doty-ET S1F VG85 Dawn s three-time great grand-daughter, Monowai Bonza Diana S3F GP83, from Dawn s daughter SRB Monowai Manx Diana-ET has started with an outstanding lactation, producing 5,757 litres, 201kg (3.5%) protein and 239kg (4.2%) fat in 246 days continuing. Her indices are BW 225, PW 362 and LW 479 at two years. Bonza Diana s grand-dam is Corboys Lightening daughter Monowai C.L Diana-ET S1F. C.L Diana has just completed her seventh lactation and has produced an average 5,420 litres, 195kg (3.6%) protein and 217 (4.0%) fat over 218 days. Her dam, Manx Diana, had two sons accepted into LIC. Two of Dawn s Elite Mountain Donor daughters, Donor Dona-ET GP83 and Donor Dawn- ET VG85 have found success in other herds as well as within the Monowai Bonza Diana S3F GP83 Monowai herd. Descendants can be found in the herd of Alister Hall, Invercargill, and the Rotodale herd of Rodney & Sarah Hudson, Levin. The Situation Now Alan sold out of dairying for four years about 10 years ago, selling the entire herd except Dawn and about 40 of her descendants. He acknowledged that he did lose some breeding in that time whilst they were leased out as the leasee s used different genetics to what he would have. He returned to dairying six years ago and the Monowai herd is now on a farm in Tamahere, just out of Hamilton. The property is quick drying Horotiu sandy loam surrounded by gullys. To overcome the guaranteed dry summer, Alan starts calving in June. With the extremely dry weather over the late summer this year, the herd was on 100% supplements since the beginning of March, This year it is possible with the higher payout, he said, The herd runs at 91% protein:fat ratio. Dawn s legacy as a top brood cow continues with her descendants continuing the tradition of high milk components and solid type through the multiple generations. 12 WINTER 2014 nzholstein

16 Hawkes Bay & Wairarapa I m adamant that dairy farming in this country, in years to come, will be forced into milking a more politically motivated cow, with outside pressure being put on our environmental footprint, animal welfare and efficiency with this I think we re in a good spot with farming Friesians. So said incoming Councillor, Hennie Verwaayen. He explained further, I do most of the milkings myself, with [wife] Kerri or staff, and I like decent looking cows that produce properly. Hence, he feeds the cow split-calving herd year-round on a system 4/5 (DairyNZ s Production System of having between 20-40% of supplementary feed imported onto the farm). I don t condone throwing money at the system for the sake of production I m too Dutch for that but I m a firm believer in having pride in the job; it is not just a numbers game. All this reflects better on the dairy sector as well. Hennie, Kerri and their children Harvey (21) and Lucy (16) own a 140 effective hectare farm just south of Dannevirke in the southern Hawke s Bay. They calve down 100 cows in autumn with the remainder calve in spring. This season we expect to do 175,000kg milk-solids at the factory, Hennie said, At around 330 cows it is just on 530kg milk-solids per cow. They purchased the property in 2001 and have since further expanded it by purchasing a 22 hectare support block nearby on which maize and triticale is harvested to supply the herd. The Verwaayen family also own a second dairy farm 20 minutes away from the home farm at Woodville, bought in 2008, which Hennie described as purely an investment property. This farm is run by a manager and milks 200 spring calving cows. No breeding is carried out in this herd; the cows are run with beef bulls only. The intention is that they will sell this property to extend or improve the home farm. The home herd is registered under the Fromdale prefix. We are from an area called Dale in an eastern suburb [of the Netherlands] against the German border, Hennie said, We are quite literally from Dale. You could say that farming is in Hennie s blood, certainly his ancestors have been farming from as late as 1450 yes, that is 564 years! In the latter years dairying has been the predominant practice but Hennie is unsure whether it has always featured. As is typical with the Netherlands, Hennie s older brother has the family farm and there were no opportunities in the Netherlands for Hennie & Kerri to purchase their own farm. We didn t have the capital to get into North America and Kerri already had family in New Zealand, which made the move easier, Hennie disclosed, And in New Zealand you don t need major money to get started. Hennie & Kerri immigrated to New Zealand in They started working on wages on a dairy farm in Stratford, Next was a contract milking job, still in the Taranaki, followed by sharemilking job milking 140 cows. They then moved to milking 380 cows for three years. We sold the good cows to purchase a farm in Okato in 1996, Hennie said explaining that they were left with 100 cows and 100 young stock. In the first season the heifers did 108% better than the cows. It was not an easy farm, Hennie explained, It was hard up against the mountain and was very wet. Hennie said that it was not easy on the cows. They were on the Okato farm for five years, before purchasing the current property, In our first year here, cow liveweights and production went up around 25% with little extra inputs. The current farm is flat and L-shaped, A vast difference to the Taranaki farm, Hennie stated. It is summer-dry, and the farm has, as Hennie describes it, A wee bit of irrigation. The farm is allocated 19 litres per second from the most over allocated stream tributary to the Manawatu, Council has allocated three farms to the stream, but it should only be one farm, Hennie stated. It is an ongoing and frustrating process with no commitment from Council to try and fix the issue in a hurry. The herd is supplemented by maize grown on the run-off, vegetable waste from Watties and McCains, palm kernel and corn waste. We feed year round, one tonne or a bit more per cow maize, one tonne palm kernel and the vegetable waste to a lesser extent. We ve been feeding system 4 or 5 for the last seven or eight years to be able to get cows milking through the summer dry and to be able to make use of mostly good autumn growth and winter milking. The family is hands-on in all aspects of the farm. They employ one full-time staff as well as a relief milker on a regular basis. Breeding decisions are influenced by their practical approach. Because Hennie is in the dairy for most milkings, he is particular about the type of animal he has to put a set of cups on, I am a sucker for good udders. Lousy udders brass me off twice a day, so I want the udder in the right place. This is why Hennie does not mate to the top Breeding Worth (BW) sires, although BW does have an influence in one half of the herd with the other half having more emphasis on type. Protein and good udders are at the top of requirements when it comes to sire selection for the Fromdale herd. Hennie said that he tries to keep the breeding goal as low key as possible, If I start to use too many criteria then I start to lose the overall breeding goal. As a guide he looks for bulls with at least a protein breeding value (BV) 40, 0.75 for udders and 0.50 for conformation. Hennie admits that the breeding philosophy has changed a bit since Harvey and Lucy have started to participate in breeding decisions. Hennie & Kerri purchased a herd with Semex breeding and it is from this herd that Harvey and Lucy have developed their studs. He said that he is feeling more invigorated and has developed his interest in more overseas breeding since they have become more involved. They use CRV Ambreed s TGRM breeding programme to help make the best possible mating decisions and to avoid inbreeding. Hennie is 14 WINTER 2014 nzholstein

17 starting to focus on and develop his more desirable cow, In years to come I aim to bred a cow with kg liveweight and producing kg milk-solids that is 84 points plus. There are basically six cow families of significance in the Fromdale herd. The animals carry a family name and are numbered. Within the herd there are the Chief, Sieben, Lilly, Dewan and Sonnie cow families. The Sieben family has had some national acclaim with Harvey entering Fromdale Sieben 24 GP84 in the 2013 Broomfield Heifer Competition. The Fairmont Mint-Edition heifer won the competition. She completed her first lactation producing 6,711 litres, 227kg (3.4%) protein and 244kg (3.6%) fat in 276 days. Her Whinlea Magley Extasy dam, Fromdale Sieben 12-RR GP82, had an interesting career in the farm dairy with her protein and fat components often competing for first place. In her four-year-old lactation, protein won the race when she produced 335kg (3.6%) protein to 305kg (3.3%) fat. Harvey has also entered the Broomfield competition again this year with a member of the Chiefs. Fromdale Chief 23 VG85, another Mint- Edition daughter, has a BW 214, PW 392 and Lactation Worth (LW) 412. The Chiefs have featured in Discovery Project with half-sister to Chief 23, Fromdale Chief 17 GP84 in the 2010/11 intake. The Lilly family is a combination of production and index. Foundation cow Fromdale Lilly 9-RR S2F completed 10 lactations in her career (ending in 2011) with her best as a 12-year-old producing 6,818 litres, 251kg (3.7%) protein and 301kg (4.4%) fat in 305 days. The SRC Hibi Secret Skelton daughter still maintains a BW 194 and a PW 451. Her Mint-Edition daughter, Fromdale Lilly 65 S3F has just started her autumn three-year-old lactation and has a BW 267, PW 535 and LW 503. Lilly 9 s grand-daughter Fromdale Lilly 44 S0F VG88 has displayed impressive production with solid protein components in her milk. Her four-year-old lactation in 2012/13 was completed with 6,281 litres, 246kg (3.9%) protein and 280kg (4.5%) fat in 270 days. Members of the Sonni family have strong production indices in their pedigree. Fromdale Sonni 12 is still in the herd at the age of Hawkes Bay & Wairarapa 14 years. Her best lactation to date was at six years producing 6,656 litres, 229kg (3.4%) protein and 294kg (4.4%) fat in 262 days. The Kapawai Lance Dave-ET daughter has had one son enter into the CRV Ambreed progeny test programme, Fromdale Son of Els. Bulls that have had some impact on the herd include Top Deck KO Pierre and Telesis Euon Firenze, [Delta NLD] Gerris left some good cows here. We use overseas bulls for protein and conformation, Hennie said, We have just started to milk our first Windbrooks and Braxtons with more to come in spring. Including De-Su Observer, Diersten Talent Rolls Royce and Delta G-Force heifers. They also have calves by Bradnick, Let it Snow, Val-Bisson and Doorman, dutch bull Bouw Snowfever and Italian sire Pirolo Goldwyn Wyman. New Zealand sires that Hennie is waiting to enter the dairy include Muritai Nombx Donivan as well as Mint-Edition, Firenze and Overdrives. Calves on the ground are by Muritai Firenze Wynsor and HSS R Stravaganza S2F. With the interest from Harvey and Lucy increasing, they have started to carry out ET work. We are just starting to get into flushing. It is more interesting with the kids involved, Hennie disclosed, I d rather they spend time in cattle breeding than running around the streets. Harvey is on the farm at the moment, but is about to work on a deer farm before going to the United States at the end of this year to work at Luck E Holsteins in Illinois for three months. He has cows within the Fromdale herd that have his Flathills prefix and is trying to breed the North American-type cow and a cow to be able to take to shows. Lucy is still at high school, but has cows, under her My-Luck prefix, in the herd. She is trying to breed red Holsteins. As an incoming Councillor for Holstein Friesian New Zealand, Hennie said that he will take his new role one step at a time, Obviously I have lots of ideas, but I have no clue. about the council dynamics yet He wants more people in the field servicing the membership, "We've had no field officer in our part of the country for some time now. The members - some of whom haven't seen a rep since Danie Swart - deserve better and we have to work on this." 19 Maire Oman Franklin For seven years in a row the Holstein Friesian New Zealand and CRV Ambreed joint venture, Genetic Leaders, has had a bull graduate from the team after receiving a successful daughter proof. This is a sign of the success of the programme from nomination of young bull calves by members and selection through to proving the genetics in the wider dairy industry. Every one of the sires has graduated from a small team of, usually, six bulls. Our latest success is Maire Oman Franklin, a dual index sire with a Breeding Worth (BW) 231/77 and New Zealand Merit Index (NZMI) 310. He is ranked 37th on the Ranking of Active Sires (RAS) list and 15th on the New Zealand Merit List. Following his daughter proof in the 2013/14 season, Franklin has certainly proved that he was worth selection and he has lived up to expectations. For his May 2010 genomic proof (recalculated to 2014 formulae) he had a gnzmi 337 and a gbw 249. At April 2014, his daughter proof was NZMI 318 and BW 236/77 he had a very small deviation of -18 and -13 respectively. Franklin was nominated by breeders Craig & Chantelle Rowe of Maire Farms in the Manawatu. The cow family has already successfully provided a bull for Genetic Leaders with 2004 Genetic Leaders graduate Maire Duke Flipper. If consistency is what you want, that can be found in Franklin s cow family: Over the four recorded generations this family has reliable type and longevity in the herd and the last couple of generations have also provided bulls for AI. Franklin s dam, Maire Banq Famous-ET S3F VG85, has two sons in the 2014 CRV Ambreed sire catalogue, the first being Franklin and the second, Maire DC Frillseeker. Unfortunately Famous died after her third lactation, Franklin s dam was unsuccessfully flushed a couple of times and then we were unable to get her back in-calf, Craig explained. Grand-dam SRD Maire Paladium Flips VG86 completed nine lactations with an average 3.6% protein and 3.8% fat. In her fiveyear-old lactation she actually produced more protein than fat with 7,921 litres, 310kg (3.9%) protein and 287 (3.6%) fat in 288 days. Flips has passed on uniform conformation; she has seven classified daughters from seven different sires with an average classification GP84 (median GP83). SRC Maire Farley Flip VG85, Franklin s great granddam and dam of Flipper, has also displayed strength in type, production and longevity. Nine daughters, by eight sires, have classified an average VG85 (median VG85). Flip completed 10 lactations with an average 5,298 litres, 200kg (3.8%) protein and 233kg (4.4%) fat in 260 days. Sire Profile Franklin daughter Tronnoco Frank Reta S3F GP84 Franklin s sire, O-Bee Manfred Justice-ET, O-Man, requires little introduction. His name is recognised around the world for his fitness traits: Think high fertility, low somatic cells, low calving difficulty, longevity and farmer likeability. Bred in the United States, it would be fair to say that he is the most successful overseas bull to hit New Zealand s shores for some time, meeting the requirements of many Kiwi dairy farmers. Franklin definitely has something to offer breeders with incredible strength in protein production (Protein breeding value 47) and plenty of milk. His daughters will be marginally larger than a typical New Zealand-bred cow. He has favourable management traits, however breeders will need to protect a little against milking speed. (BV -0.10) Overall his type and conformation is strong, but breeders are advised to mate him to a cow with a strong fore udder (BV -0.15) and to keep an eye on udder support (BV 0.25) and rear udder (BV 0.09). CRV Ambreed is very happy with the production of Franklin s daughters finding that the desirably high protein component gives them a protein:fat ratio of 0.9. Tronnoco Frank Reta S3F GP84 (photo) has completed 278 days of her lactation and has to date recorded 7,636 litres, 284kg (3.7%) protein and 275kg (3.6%) fat. Her indices also indicate her value in the herd with a BW 170, Production Worth (PW) 261 and Lactation Worth (LW) 309. In the Estee herd of Tony & Sarah Brock, Franklin's daughter Estee S0F GP82 is also making her mark as a two-yearold. 20 ET Programmes What can I do to maximise the success of my ET programme? By Jacqui Forsyth & Andrew Russo, Animal Breeding Services The success or failure of TVR-IVP is determined by the following factors: ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ The ability of the donor to produce eggs The ability of the semen to fertilise those eggs The ability of the IVP laboratory to grow the fertilised eggs to transferable quality embryos The ability of the recipient selected to get in-calf and carry that pregnancy to term. There are considerable resources that go into ensuring that the embryo production is maximised but often the attention to preparing donors for collection and recipients for embryo transfers is not given the same importance. Donor preparation What can you do? To maximise the performance of your yearling heifers, it is important that they are well grown and in good health. The oocytes (eggs) that will be collected by TVR begin development/recruitment in the ovary days prior to the collection. Any significant changes to nutrition and growth rates may have an impact on the numbers and quality of oocytes collected and directly affects the number of viable embryos. A structured animal health plan should be in place for the heifers from birth until they enter the herd. To ensure they achieve the desired consistent growth rates and are in optimum health, the plan should include: Jacqui Forsyth & Andrew Russo ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ Good calf rearing practices and target weaning weights, A vaccination programme with sensitiser and booster doses given at appropriate times. Ideally this should include vaccinating against leptospirosis, clostridial diseases and BVD as core vaccinations, Monitoring and supplementation of trace minerals (copper, selenium, cobalt) as appropriate for your farm or grazing block, A planned drenching programme based around using effective drenches, Treatments that are appropriate for certain areas such as facial eczema protection, and Regular weighing to make sure that the plan is working and heifers are meeting the desired weight targets. 21 ET Programmes What will we be doing? On arrival at the ET centre the following treatments and tests will be carried out: ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ Weighing and tagging with ABS identification, Blood tested for BVD antigen and EBL, Vaccination against BVD, clostridial diseases and leptospirosis, Quarantine drenched with a combination drench product for internal and external parasite control, and Bayticol pour-on tick treatment. As part of the ongoing TVR programme ABS will: ᴥ ᴥ Weigh heifers on a regular basis, Monitor faecal egg counts and drench accordingly, and ᴥ Supplement trace minerals as appropriate (copper, B12, selenium) To achieve the best possible outcomes, the yearling heifers in the TVR programme need to be healthy and well grown (at desired weight target for their age and still growing at a rate to reach later targets) before they arrive at the ET centre. Once on the ET centre, the heifers will be managed to ensure that their daily weight gain is above that required to reach target weights for the breed at months. Recipient Preparation Now is the time, before you begin producing embryos, to think about what you will use as a recipient to ensure that they are in a suitable condition and that you have enough available for when they are required. To be considered as recipients, cows should meet the following criteria: ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ Be calved at least eight weeks before transfer day, Be cycling regularly or have had at least one pre-mating heat, Have no known health or reproductive problems. Has she had mastitis? Is metrichecking carried out? Has she regularly got in-calf? Be robust enough to carry the selected breed of embryo, and Ensure that trace element status is managed. It is preferable for the recipients to be younger animals that have no history of reproductive or health problems. The animal should be on a slightly increasing plane of nutrition and be at minimum Body Condition Score (BCS) 4.0. Pregnancy results can be depressed when the recipients are too fat or too thin. Routine treatments should be completed prior to an ET programme. BVD has the ability to negatively affect an ET programme. Ideally recipients should be tested and vaccinated or at least vaccinated ahead of use as a recipient. Purchased recipients should have at least six weeks to settle on a new farm. They will often have an unknown nutritional and reproductive history and may bring a disease problem to an otherwise healthy herd. It is wise in this situation to discuss your ET programme with your vet, not least because diseases such as leptospirosis or BVD and deficiencies of copper and selenium can have a devastating effect on an ET programme. Programming recipients You have the option of using natural heats, PG or a CIDR programme. It is our intention that you should work with your own local vet to ensure that enough suitable recipients are available on the day of ET. Synchrony method Advantages Disadvantages Natural heats Cheapest Difficult to be certain of having adequate number of animals available on a given two day period. Does not allow pre-selection of the recipients to be used, i.e. it could be all your higher BW or more recently calved cows that cycle in the timeframe required. PG (prostaglandin) Minimal intervention Low cost * A CIDR based programme with use of PMSG at removal is a good choice if cow condition is lower or there is any uncertainty of the recipients cycling. Recipient synchronisation to the embryos Cows tend to cycle over a five day period with the peak on day three after injection, and so the number of cows cycling at a suitable time will be less than the number programmed. If there is no pre-recording of heats, 40% of cows will not respond to a PG. CIDR based* Most accurate Most expensive To maximise embryo survival in the recipient female following transfer, conditions in the recipient reproductive tract should closely resemble those in the donor. This requires synchronisation of the oestrus cycles between the donor and the recipients. It is important to know that when an embryo is transferred, it is already seven days old. Because of this, the recipients will have cycled (and been left unmated) the week prior to the ET date. For the purpose of determining calving dates, you need use seven days prior to the ET as the mating date. We have analysed data from the approximately 1,500 ET s into our recipient herd annually to identify whether there is an ideal recipient timing for IVP embryos. There is a difference between using day six versus day seven or eight recipient (the traditional heat window suggested as appropriate). In 2013 we were able to take this one step further and recognise that a day nine is also not as good as a day seven or eight recipient. nzholstein WINTER

22 ET Programmes Based on this information and backed up by references from other studies, we recommend that you use day 7 and 8 heats for IVF embryos, where possible. There is no statistical difference between using a day seven or a day eight recipient. The need for tight synchrony between the embryo and recipient seems to be even more important when dealing with a vitrified (frozen) IVP embryo. For fresh embryos, this means cows that are on heat the day of TVR or the day following TVR. For frozen embryos the cows need to be on heat seven or eight days before ET. Day six or day nine cows should be used as reserves (or last resort). The net effect of using only day seven and eight recipients for your synchrony is significant. With 20 ETs, a difference in pregnancy rate of 5%, is one less calf. Using day seven and eight means that you will potentially need to prepare more recipients. Ensure that you have adequate recipients available 70.0% 60.0% 50.0% 40.0% 30.0% 20.0% 10.0% 0.0% Pregnancy rates by day of heat to ET Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 Day 9 While not the case with the Discovery Project breeders, it was quite evident in 2013 that in some cases, there was not enough consideration given to the expected results from the TVR-IVP (>2 embryos per session). Breeders were at times surprised by the number of embryos that had been produced and were not adequately resourced with recipients resulting in embryos being left in storage, which is a wasted opportunity. All recipients should be clearly identifiable from a distance by a freeze brand or large ear tag. Our team will record the visual identification on the day of embryo transfer. This information is submitted to MINDA to enable the resulting calves to be recognised. Facilities required The place where you do your AI is also usually the best place for the ET s to be done. Obviously well restrained recipients, good footing for our technician and freedom for the technician to work (i.e. not having to fight with cups, pipes etc) will increase the likelihood that our technician has of making the perfect transfer. A covered facility is preferable. The better the flow of the area the technician transfers embryos in, the less of your precious time in the spring that our team will need to take up. Working in a good environment, our teams can be expected to transfer approximately embryos per hour. It may sound obvious but you will be surprised by some of the situations we try to work in. Animal Breeding Services owns shed caddies and pit platforms - please inform us in advance if you think that your situation will be improved by having these available. Scanning Often the question is asked as to when it can be determined that embryos have held. Obviously non-return rates are the first clue. You should expect recipients that are not in-calf to return approximately 14 days after ET (or 21 days after initial heat date). Early pregnancy diagnosis can be carried out by experienced operators at approximately 28 days after ET, and embryo pregnancies can be sex scanned at approximately 58 days after ET. 20 WINTER 2014 nzholstein

24 Obituary Raymond Rossiter 4 May March 2014 Ray s involvement with the New Zealand Holstein Friesian Association began soon after they changed from Jerseys to Friesians. Ray became an avid pedigree man becoming involved with the Canterbury Branch. He gave many years service as a steward at the Canterbury A&P Show. After moving to Marlborough, Ray did stewarding service at the Marlborough Show. He received a New Zealand Holstein Friesian Association Long Service Award in In later years Ray gave prize money for placings in the Marlborough Holstein Friesian Junior Calf classes. He said he got a real pleasure from seeing young people s faces light up upon getting prizes. Marlborough members will miss Ray as he enjoyed seeing round herds on field days etc and always was picking out good cows. It is good to see grandson Scott Rossiter continuing the Taunton name. Our condolences to the family and friends of... A favourite poem of Ray s: The Five Day Cow I long for a cow of modern make, That milks five days for leisure s sake, That sleeps on Saturday, snores on Sunday, And starts afresh again on Monday. I wish for a herd that knows the way, To wash each other day by day, That never bothers to excite us, With chills or fever or mastitis. I sigh for a new and better breed, That takes less grooming and less feed, That has the reason, wit and wisdom, To use the seat and flushing system. I pray each weekend, long and clear, Less work to do from year to year, And cows that reach production peak, All in a five day working week. I look for officials, by the mob, To guide the farmers at their job, And show these stupid breeds how, To propagate a five-day cow. 25 South Island Championships By Stephen Booth Show Results Breeders travelled from Canterbury, Golden Bay and the West Coast to compete with locals from Blenheim and Rai Valley for the South Island Championships. Peter Sherriff from Kaiapoi judged and described his appreciation at the quality each breeder had brought to the show. The breeders here today should take credit from the efforts they have made to present their stock in excellent condition. President Doug Courtman attended and presented ribbons to the champions in the picturesque Rai Valley. The A&P show was celebrating its 80th show that still has a champion bull class. Local breeders, the Harvey family, are a big part of the show with Tim being president, Andrea the secretary, Shona travelling from the West Coast to exhibit, Matthew leading in the ring and parents John & Pam assisting out the back. Local Kerry Robbins exhibited Tahora Shottle Toots-ET VG88 for the South Island Championship and also Best Udder. Reserve was the Harvey Family with Harvest Billion Fluffy VG88 who also won the Type & Production class. The Intermediate Champion Pelorus Goldwyn Toni-ET VG85 is a daughter of Toots, exhibited by Kerry Robbins while the Reserve Intermediate came from West Coast breeders Steve & Shelli Mears. Sixteen yearlings and 24 calves paraded for the Junior Female Championship with Parlan Terror Clear winning for Bradley Parkes from Blenheim. Former Blenheim breeders Phil & Nancy Bay, who now reside in Canterbury, took reserve with their winning calf Fenton Goldsun Ally. Kerry Robbins won the Champion Bull class, which does not carry a South Island title having been discontinued in 1995 for males. Doug Courtman commented on the distance people travelled to exhibit their stock and the hospitality shown by the breeders and thanked them for making him welcome at the show. 27 Higher is not always Better By Dr Jeremy Bryant, NZ Animal Evaluation Limited (NZAEL) Manager. Understanding Breeding Values What do breeding values mean when you are studying catalogues for sire selection or the potential purchase of a female animal? Jeremy Bryant explains that not all breeding values should have a positive value and how breeding values can translate into Breeding Worth. For most trait breeding values, more positive values are better. Classic examples are protein, milk-fat, fertility and residual survival. You obviously want more milk-solids, higher levels of cows calving in the first 42 days of the calving period and cows living longer. But, there are some exceptions where lower or less positive values are truly better. Traits where negative (or less positive) is better There are two main traits where negative (or less positive) is better, for example, Somatic Cell Score (SCS) and Liveweight. These traits have negative economic values indicating they impose an economic cost to the farm system if they are higher. It is easy to explain why lower is better for Somatic Cell Score. If the breeding value for SCS is higher, you are more likely to be at risk of receiving bulk milk somatic cell score penalties and have greater incidence of mastitis by using or having these animals in your herd. The negative economic value for liveweight is often misunderstood. The economic value of cow liveweight comprises four separate components: ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ ᴥ Cow maintenance requirements - increasing cow liveweight is expected to result in higher annual maintenance feed requirements for the cow Heifer replacement feed costs there are higher feed requirements for maintaining and growing larger replacements Cull cow value heavier cows have more value as culls Bobby calf value increasing cow liveweight increases the size of bobby calves produced In summary, being large imposes extra maintenance energy and growth costs. This means fewer animals can be carried for a fixed amount of feed producing less milk-solids leading to reduced profit or higher heifer grazing costs. These maintenance and growth costs far outweigh the extra cull and bobby calf value of larger animals or the savings in fixed per cow costs. Many might say that larger animals produce more milk-solids so why do they get a penalty? They are right in that they do produce more milk-solids as there is a strong positive association between liveweight and milk-solids production. Nevertheless, higher producing animals receive economic credit through highly positive fat and protein breeding values. Let s look at a practical example of two bulls with identical Breeding Worth (Table 1). Breeding Value Contribution to BW EV Bull A Bull B Bull A Bull B Protein ($/kg) $ $321 $257 Milkfat ($/kg) $ $61 $53 Milk volume ($/kg) -$ $79 -$56 Liveweight ($/kg) -$ $133 -$83 Fertility ($/%) $ $14 $14 SCS ($/unit SCS) -$ $4 $4 Residual survival ($/days) $ $14 $14 Breeding Worth ($/5 t DM) $202 $202 Table 1. Tail of two bulls Dr Jeremy Bryant Bull A has higher liveweight, milk-fat, protein and milk volume breeding values than Bull B. Consequently, Bull A receives a greater contribution to his BW via protein and milk-fat with a slightly higher milk volume penalty. This comes with greater maintenance energy costs so that he has a more negative contribution to his BW via liveweight. These differences in production and liveweight between bulls cancel each other out so that they have exactly the same Breeding Worth. Performance relative to the Genetic Base Cow The Genetic Base Cow is our genetic pivot point. All Breeding Worth and breeding values are expressed relative to the Genetic Base Cow. The current Genetic Base Cow is "the average of all cows born in the year In 2015, the Genetic Base Cow will change to "the average of all cows born in the year H oo o-ved?? ave you mooo-ved?? 28 Understanding Breeding Values The current Genetic Base Cow consists of 38,684 cows with the following breed breakdown: Holstein Friesian (17,103 cows; 44% of cows), Jersey (9,739; 25%), Ayrshire (1,296; 3%), HF x J (8,563; 22%) and Other (1,983; 5%). The mixed age averages of their 270- day lactation yields are 210kg for fat, 164kg for protein and 4,406 litres for milk volume. Their average mature liveweight is 500kg. The average Traits Other than Production (TOP) scores and genetic trends are routinely provided on the NZAEL website ( For a few key ones the average of the Genetic Base Cow are 6.22 for Milking Speed (e.g. tending towards fast and improving), 6.19 for Legs (e.g. tending towards more curved than straight curvature of the legs), 5.87 for Udder Support (e.g. tending towards strong rather than weak and improving slowly, on average, each year) and 5.64 for Udder Overall (e.g. better than average and improving slowly, on average, each year). If we now assume Bull A and Bull B were in fact cows and expressed their genetic merit relative to the Genetic Base Cow, the differences are clearly illustrated. Bull B produces less milksolids but more milk-solids per kilogram of liveweight, has less maintenance, lactation and pregnancy costs. Genetic Bull A Bull B Base Cow Milk-solids (kg) Liveweight (kg) Milk Solids/kg Liveweight 75% 76% 78% Total Feed requirements (t DM/yr) Maintenance (t DM/yr) Lactation (t DM/yr) Pregnancy (t DM/yr) Milksolids/t DM Table 2. Comparison of milk-solids production, liveweight, efficiency and feed requirements of the Genetic Base Cow, Bull A and Bull B. Conclusions Don t always assume higher is better when it comes breeding values. Somatic cell and liveweight are two examples where higher breeding values lead to penalties on Breeding Worth. Breeding Worth provides an all-round measure of lifetime feed efficiency that takes into account the value and costs of changes in economically important traits. 42 Young Breeders Dairy Industry Awards Experience Amy White recently competed in the NZ Dairy Industry Awards winning the Farm Trainee of the Year for the West Coast/Top of the South region and going forward as a finalist for the national title. Unfortunately Amy didn t win, but she has an awesome experience! As the Top of the South and West Coast dairy trainee winner I won a trip to Auckland. As did all the regional winners who made their way there with flights, food and accommodation all paid for on the 5th of May. There we meet up with our study tour hosts, Greg Maughan and Shelley Singer. The purpose of the five days was to spend time with the other contestants learning and growing as dairy trainees and to compete for the national title, with a good amount of fun along the way. First up was our practical challenge. There were six components, which were fencing, first aid, plate metering calculations, plant identifying, feed budgeting and mower maintenance. It was great to get this part finished with and left us free to enjoy the rest of the tour. The overall winner of the practical challenge was Matthew Sneddon. First Aid Challenge Waikato Education Centre On Tuesday we visited the Waikato Education Centre where we did team building activities and rock climbing. Afterwards we visited Fonterra's Te Rapa site, to have a look at the milk powder dryers. The dryers are about 50 metres tall and looked very impressive. Everyone was also very interested in the robotic arms that stacked the bags onto pallets. I enjoyed looking around the Fonterra site as it was great to see how they turned raw milk into many products and all the different quality controls and processes they have in place. From there we had a look at John Fisher s robotic milking farm. This was an exciting look into the future of farms and where technology is headed. I find it interesting that John said that between 4am-7am the least amount of cows milked themselves, as usually that's when most farmers milk their cows. After dinner we had previous sharemilker, managers and trainees come in and talk to us about their experiences and how they have or are currently achieving their goals. They gave positive, but realistic stories, which have inspired me to think about my goals. Early Wednesday we were hosted by LIC for breakfast and to have a look around the bull farm. Afterwards we went Breakfast at LIC, Hamilton to Henry Hendriks farm. Having a stocking rate of nearly seven cows to the hectare on peat soils is unusual but Henry definitely seemed to have his farming operation running very smoothly. Wednesday was finished off with a sky walk around Sky Tower and a trivia night. Thursday was our interview day and a free day to mix and mingle with everyone, followed by dinner hosted by Westpac with Grant Fox speaking. On Friday we were put into teams to complete an amazing race all over Auckland. Then it was time for the big finale. The awards organisers did a fantastic job Fonterra, Te Rapa Sky Walk, Auckland Sky Tower of an art deco themed night, complete with a magician, two meter tall cake and witty presentations. The majority of attendees helped the winners to celebrate, well into Saturday morning, their successes. I really enjoyed my study tour. I learnt a lot, saw various sides of farming and met some excellent people and feel I have learned and grown heaps as a result of entering the awards. If you have the opportunity to enter the Dairy Industry Awards, it is well worth it. Lastly I wish to congratulate a well-deserved win to the national dairy trainee of the year Ruth Hone. 40 WINTER 2014 nzholstein

45 Premier Sires Breeders Day In April LIC hosted the breeders of bulls that were in the 2013 Premier Sires Daughter Proven and Forward Pack teams. Bull acquisition manager, Simon Worth, spoke about the Holstein Friesian teams, which saw 21 bulls in the daughter proven team and 24 in the Forward Pack team. All up 53% of Premier Sires inseminations were made by the black and white breed, he said. He spoke about the Daughter Proven team saying that it was a tremendous line-up with some of the biggest trait improvers Premier Sires has ever seen. This team accounted for over 1.4 million inseminations this last year or 37% of all fresh semen inseminations. Bull Celebrations Firenze Retires CRV Ambreed retired one of its most productive Holstein Friesian sires in May at a special event in Hamilton in front of national and international guests, including the Chief Executive and Chairman of the Board of its Holland-headquartered global head office. At 12 years of age, Telesis Euon Firenze has produced more than 643,000 doses of semen, which have been sold in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile, Philippines, Mexico, USA, Malaysia, Fiji, Ecuador, Uruguay, Argentina, Coast Rica and Thailand. He explained the team had a weighted average BW of 236, Important to many, this efficiency was anchored by an average protein BV [breeding value] of 36kg. Obviously production is fundamental but so too are the health and fitness traits, Simon said, How impressive then, that this same team delivered an average of 1.8 for fertility, SCC of -0.03, longevity of 325 days, udder overall 0.35 and dairy conformation of He noted that it was encouraging to see three of bulls in the team had been previously marketed as young bulls based on their genomic prediction. In 2013 it was the first time the Forward Pack team concept had been marketed with the team being made up of a mix of daughter proven sires and young genomic sires. This saw 10 of the very best daughter proven bulls team up with 14 of the most elite young guns to go forth and make an impact, Simon said. Hindsight is easy especially in the genetics game. But the move to the Forward Pack concept was a no-brainer it makes so much sense. Retiring bull Telesis Euon Firenze with breeder Philip Wilson, CRV Global CEO Roald van Noort and CRV Global Chairman Kees Gorter. In New Zealand alone he is recorded as having 40,964 daughters in 3,330 herds. Of his sons, 67 have been enrolled with New Zealand Animal Evaluation Limited (NZAEL). CRV Ambreed s managing director Angus Haslett said Firenze will leave his mark on the New Zealand dairy industry, particularly through the legacy of his sons and grandsons. On average one in 10 bulls that enter our progeny test sire group graduate as daughter-proven. These bulls might be marketed to dairy farmers for two to three years in our catalogue line-up, because after that the demand for their genetics tends to wane as other bulls are proven. But Firenze has been catalogued and marketed for nine years now, said Haslett. He added that Firenze is not being retired because of his age, inability to produce enough semen or because the quality of his genetics have changed. Basically he is being retired because he has already offered so much influence to the national dairy herd and has a high number of proven sons to continue his genetic line. Breeders Andrew, John & Jenne Kennedy with their bull Whinlea GN Express-ET S3F He explained that the Holstein Friesian Forward Pack team accumulated an insemination tally of 572,000, 46% of all Forward Pack inseminations. The team had a weighted average BW of 255, a protein BV of 36kg and a fertility BV of 2.2. Furthermore the team delivered a nice minus for somatic cell count, total longevity of 306 days and an udder BV at a significant The breeders also got to see many of the bulls paraded at the LIC semen collection centre and learned from the staff different personality traits of the bulls. Firenze currently has nine sons in the April 2014 Ranking of Active Sires (RAS) List published by New Zealand Animal Evaluation, with three of them in the top 10. On retirement Firenze will head back to his breeder Geoffrey Wilson and spend his remaining years on one of the Wilson family s three Otago dairy farms on the Tairei Plains. Geoffrey and his parents, Philip & Heather, have been breeding Holstein Friesians for their Telesis stud for more than 30 years. Geoffrey said the novelty of having one of New Zealand s top performing bulls on the farm will certainly not be wasted. We certainly have star treatment planned for Firenze when he comes home. He will be put out to pasture with a big smile while he looks after the dry cows and gets the chance to be a real bull, said Wilson. nzholstein AUTUMN WINTER

46 Semex On-Farm Competition 2014 Regional Results The Semex On-Farm Competition is still gaining in popularity in its eleventh year. The number of cows increased, yet again, with 809 competing in the eight regional competitions, contesting for the chance to be in the top two in their respective classes and enter the national finals. The purpose of the competition is to find that best conformation cow, of its age group, anywhere in New Zealand. The cows do not leave the farm to attend a show; instead the judge comes to the cow. The first round of judging is regional with the top two from each age group class moving into the national finals judged by Australian judge Allan Garratty. Mr Garratty will be announcing his winners at the 2014 Annual Conference in June. The six classes judged were: Maughlin Storm Two-year-old, Comestar Leader Three-yearold, Townson Lindy Four-year-old, Hanoverhill Raider Five-year-old, Conant-Acres-JY Broker Mature (6-10 years) and Comestar Laurie Sheik Veteran (over 10 years). 48 Around the World Australia New CEO for Holstein Australia Graeme Gillan has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Holstein Australia. Holstein Australia President, Ron Chittick said Graeme brought a vast knowledge of the Australian dairy industry to the Association, from a career of direct involvement at executive management level within the herd improvement industry. New Holstein Australia CEO Graeme Gillan Graeme is the ideal fit for Holstein Australia. He has the skills and experience to help us address the rapidly changing dairy herd improvement landscape and to take up new opportunities that can be a significant benefit to our members dairy businesses, Mr Chittick said. Graeme is well known at all levels of the Australian dairy industry and will be known to many of our members. We look forward to him joining the team from 28 April, Mr Chittick said. Mr Gillan said he was excited to join the team which services the largest breed association in the Australia. Holstein Australia has a reputation for offering a unique range of products and services to members as well as to dairy farmers at the cutting edge of improving their herds. There are exciting opportunities ahead with what genomics can offer the industry to increase genetic gain within herds and to improve profitability of all dairy farmers. Graeme added. United States Dairying continues to decrease in the States Over 2,321 dairy farmers left the dairy industry in the last 12 months in the United States. High feed costs, despite high milk prices, have seen increasingly tighter margins, a common reason for farmers leaving dairying. Despite the reduction in the number of dairy farmers, the national dairy herd has only seen a 0.1% reduction to 9.2 million cows. The average herd size stands at 167 cows over the entire nation; however the West herd size is 279 cows, more than five times the size of herds in other regions. Increasing global dairy marketplace competition and a US milk price that, although at a record high, remains lower than prices in Canada, China, Australia and New Zealand, is driving producers out of the industry. Source: The Bullvine ( bullvine.com) Canada Semex delivers 12th millionaire sire Recently, sire Mainstream Manifold reached the pivotal Millionaire Sire mark at Semex, joining 11 other elite Semex sires that have each produced over one million doses of semen. As Semex s twelfth Millionaire Sire, Manifold is joining an elite fraternity Millionaire sire Mainstream Manifold of Semex icons including: R-E-W Buckeye; Ladino Park Talent; Hanoverhill Inspiration; Madawaska Aerostar; Startmore Rudolph; Comestar Lee, Leader, Outside and Lheros; Stouder Morty; and Oliveholme Aeroline. Debuting as the #20 TPI sire in August 2009, Manifold has only gained strength as time has passed and he s added daughters. Following the April 2014 genetic evaluations he now ranks as the #12 TPI and #6 LPI sire, with over 12,400 daughters in his proof. Manifold comes from a strong cow family that was well-known for their production potential and is backed by eight generations of VG or EX, says Mike West, Semex Sire Analyst. He combines his maternal line s production and type strength with the desirable health and fertility attributes of his sire O Man. Today, Manifold is still one of the top ranked O-Man sons, and it s this combination of the best traits from his sire and maternal line that have given us the breeding pattern so many dairymen worldwide appreciate and benefit from. 46 WINTER 2014 nzholstein

52 Sire Proving End of Season Daughter Proofs During the 2013/14 season, Holstein Friesian New Zealand, through joint ventures and partnerships, had 10 bulls receive a daughter proof. At the conclusion of the season, this (below) is how the bulls have rated. The bulls have been ranked and compared to all other Holstein Friesian bulls who also received a daughter proof in the same season (i.e. 110*** bulls). As well, the bulls that have made it in the top 50 Holstein Friesians on the Ranking of Active Sires (RAS) list (all ages) have been noted. The end result shows that Holstein Friesian New Zealand, with its partners in the various programmes, has had considerable success at proving bulls, despite the low number of bulls selected for proof. Semex changed its daughter proving policy internationally shortly after this team was selected and now all bulls are proven in Canada and the States, no matter where in the world the bulls come from. 2 Although this bull was marketed in 2009, he did not sell enough semen in that season to obtain an accurate daughter proof. He was marketed again in 2010 with improved sales. 53 Stephen Booth Field Officer South Island The autumn has flown by with a busy programme of activities from one end of the country to the other. In February I judged the Northland area for the Semex On- Farm Competition, visiting members and being hosted by the Harvey and Hudson families. The extremely dry conditions in Dargaville were only slightly better in the eastern areas. The following week I was in Otago and Southland for classification and then travelled north to Marlborough for the South Island Championships at the Rai Valley show. President Doug Courtman attended the show and we were hosted by Ray & Sandra Hocking in their holiday home on the Marlborough Sounds. Breeders travelled from Westport, Golden Bay and North Canterbury to join the locals in the ring. Local personality Kerry Robbins won the Champion Cow title and the results are in another article on page 23. I continued my journey judging three progeny competitions in Marlborough, Golden Bay and the West Coast. The smaller clubs make up for lack of numbers with their passion for breeding that generally results in a full turnout. The 2,500 kilometres travelled on this trip would have to be the most scenic anywhere in the world! Later in March I flew to Hamilton to attend Council meetings and conducted a Perfect Cow day with Denis Aitken at Hendersons Lornlace stud. I attended a Bay of Plenty meeting and viewed Vaughan Clarke s Fantastic sale stock at Rotorua. The following week judging schools were in Canterbury and Otago where there was a good turnout of younger people learning about conformation and comparing differences. In April I judged the Aorangi progeny competition and caught up with members in South Canterbury. The autumn sales have reduced over the years but the quality has not. I attended the Fairleigh sale and later in the month I took a car load of members to the Canterbury Collection Sale, stopping on the way for a herd walk at Rob & Katrina Kelly s, Kailey stud at Oamaru. The sale was very successful with an average of nearly $8,000. Top price of $21,000 was paid by Phil & Nancy Bay for Deloraine Fever Valma-ET, with several lots going to North Island breeders. Rod Benton Field Officer Waikato/Bay of Plenty Since my last report I have continued visiting members and have signed up four new members who, along with their cows, will make a real contribution to Holstein Friesian New Zealand. From the Field I attended the Waipa Combined Breeders Sale, which was a great success with a top price of $24,000 for a yearling heifer with an overall average of $3,300. I also attended The Lornlace sale; Adrian & Sally put up a great line of well grown heifers backed by high production and deserved more than the $2,234, which they averaged. I have just returned from a trip to Northland. I visited 10 members from Wellsford to Kaitaia and caught up with many old friends who I haven t seen for years. The main reason for the trip was the autumn classification. As usual I travelled on some pretty shoddy roads, but saw some good cows.one visit was to Tony & Eileen Schluter s; Tony was one of the first people that I met on my first visit to the north 23 years ago. The Pekerau herd still has some great cows; I got 2 Excellent cows and 23 VG s out of 26. While in the area I called in to see Brian (Buster) Burton in a retirement home at Kamo. It was great to see him, we had a good chat. He looks really well and is in a lovely spot. I hope you all have a good break over the winter, and think about the cows you are going to classify in the spring. If you would like a visit from me, know of anyone who would be interested in becoming a member or you have any queries please give me a ring. Rod Benton Mobile Office I have just completed HFBoost field days with CRV Ambreed in Manawatu, Southland and Canterbury with classification in Marlborough and Canterbury to follow next week. Please contact me if you would like a visit during my travels. Stephen Booth Mobile s.booth@nzhfa.org.nz nzholstein WINTER
