1 WEEK 6 February 17-21, 2016 McLain Ward and Rothchild Race to Victory in $380,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix CSI 5* EDITOR: JENNIFER WOOD Hunters Prepare for WCHR Week at WEF 5 McLain Ward and Rothchild topped the field in the first five-star grand prix of the WEF season. Sportfot Two-time Olympic team and 2015 Pan American Games individual gold medalist McLain Ward (USA) jumped to a thrilling victory on Saturday night in the $380,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix CSI 5* at the 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). Ward and his longtime mount Rothchild raced to the top of an eight-horse jump-off in front of a packed house at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC). Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum (GER) and Comanche 28 finished second, and Mark Bluman (COL) and Califa LS placed third. Bob Ellis (GBR) set the track for 44 starters in Saturday s feature class under the lights of PBIEC s International Arena. Eight entries advanced to the jump-off, where the top three were the only combinations to jump double clear. Second to go over the short course, Bluman set the pace with a clear round in seconds aboard Stransky s Mission Farms Califa LS. Ward and Sagamore Farm s Rothchild were next to clear the jump-off in a blazing time of seconds. Michaels-Beerbaum and Artemis Equestrian Farm s Comanche 28 settled for second place in a time of seconds. Eduardo Menezes (BRA) and Quintol clocked the fastest four-fault round in seconds to finish fourth. Rothchild, a 15-year-old Belgian Sport Horse gelding (Artos x Elegant de l Ile) also known as Bongo, was his usual quirky self throughout the night. Bongo gave Ward some trouble in the schooling ring before the jumpoff, leaving his rider a little unsure of how things were going to go, but after throwing a few more antics as they entered the ring for the short course, he set off on a mission. Bongo and I were having a rough night in the schooling area, Ward detailed. It is a pretty lively atmosphere back there and this is his eighth year jumping grand prixs here, so he knows it and he anticipates it. The warm-up was pretty rough, and he was pretty excited to the point where I was not sure that it was going to go very well. We barely warmed up, but sometimes that works out. You have no choice, and you do the best you can. He s tough in the warm-up, but it is that spirit that probably makes him do physically much more than he should have done in his career, so you have to take the good with the bad. Ward now has another top mount in HH Azur that has taken some of Rothchild s workload, but the spirited little chestnut continues to win in his own right. While Azur is Ward s hopeful mount for this year s Olympic Games, Rothchild will continue to compete in top competitions. Leslie Campbell and E.L. Raymond won the Camping World Adult Amateur 50 & Over Hunter Section A championship at WEF 5 and was named the Kastel Denmark Best Turned Out Award winner. A great week of weather complimented an excellent week of hunter competition during week 5 of WEF. The professional divisions kicked off the week in the E.R. Mische Grand Hunter Ring with the crowning of the Shapley s Green Conformation Hunter champion. Scott Stewart rode Fun to the Shapley s Green Conformation Hunter championship. Stewart dominated the division aboard the six-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding that is owned by David Gochman. The pair won the model, under saddle, and three of the four over fences classes. They also placed second in the handy class. Havens Schatt settled for the reserve tricolor aboard Tracy Sherriff-Muser s mount Quincy. Schatt piloted the eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding to a third, fourth, and two second place finishes over fences, as well as a second in the under saddle. The Pre-Green Hunter 3 3 division, presented by Perfect Products, crowned its division champion on Thursday afternoon. Christopher Payne and Well Played took home the championship title after winning two of the four over fences classes. Payne also earned two fourth place ribbons over jumps atop the eight-year-old Zangersheide gelding. Jennifer Bliss and Face The Music were the reserve champion winners. Face The Music is a seven-year-old Warmblood mare owned by Harris Hill Farm LLC. Bliss earned three second place ribbons over fences and a fourth in the under saddle on her way to the reserve title. Junior riders also battled it out for championship titles this week. Aizlynn Radwanski claimed the top honors in the Children s Hunter Horse She rode her own Cute Date, an eight-year old Warmblood gelding, to the under saddle win and a blue ribbon in one of the over fences classes. She also placed second in another over fences class. Brynn Hanson and MTM Caruso S earned the reserve title after placing first, second, third, and fourth over jumps. MTM Caruso S is a 10-year-old Rheinlander gelding owned by Jamie Stryker. Later in the show week, the Carolex Stables Younger Cross Rail Hunter division awarded championship honors to Vivian Golden and Chapman. Golden placed first in the under saddle. She also placed first and second over fences with the 2003 Please turn to page 12 Please turn to page 6

5 Gleneayre Equestrian Program Enjoys Educational Weekend at WEF The 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) welcomed visitors from the Gleneayre Equestrian Program (GEP) of Lumberton, NJ, during week five competition. Over the weekend, seven seniors of the GEP work to ride program visited Wellington along with GEP s Managing Director, Alison Newman, her assistant, and GEP s assistant trainer. During their stay, the girls had a fun schedule of activities planned with some of the USA s top trainers and riders. They stayed at the house of GEP Founder and Executive Director Ellen J. Healey, and spent their days taking in all things equestrian. On Saturday morning, the girls volunteered at The County Special Olympics and served as judges for the competition, held in the Van Kampen Covered Arena at The Stadium at The Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. They then observed an equitation lesson with renowned trainer Stacia Madden. On Saturday evening, the girls walked the grand prix course with two-time Olympic team gold medalist Beezie Madden. Sunday morning, the girls walked the Maclay course with Stacia Madden and observed the class. They then had the opportunity to meet George Morris. On Tuesday, the girls visited Hunters Farms, where a former GEP student is now a professional groom. The group also met with well-known trainer Michele Grubb to observe grand prix rider Ali Wolff as she prepared and showed. This was the sixth time that the Gleneayre program has visited WEF, and 17-year-old Emily Lange was visiting Wellington for the second time during her four years with the program. Lange spoke of her experience, stating, This is my second time coming to Wellington, and it has been amazing each time, but this time was definitely my favorite. Walking the course with Beezie was really an amazing experience. When I walk a course just before showing, I do not usually look at it from the horse s perspective. I look at it just from my own perspective and what I am going to do. Beezie pointed out what the horse would do in different situations, and I never thought of it like that, putting myself in the horse s shoes. That was really cool, and I am going to bring that home with me for when I walk courses again. The girls also had the chance to meet grand prix rider Brianne Goutal, who has donated horses to the Gleneayre program. Meeting Brianne Goutal was amazing because I ride her old horse, Lange added. Meeting George is also amazing, with all that insight and knowledge and wisdom that he has to offer. I just want to take in everything he has to say. Marielle Sarlo (18) joined the Gleneayre program when she was 10 and enjoyed her first time visiting Wellington this week. This has been an incredible experience, Sarlo stated. We judged for the Special Olympics and that was awesome. We did a few classes, and just seeing the kids and how we affected them in that short amount of time was amazing. It really turned my perspective, seeing how kids with a disability can enjoy the sport and love it as much as we do. We went and saw Beezie at her farm and she showed us her horse Simon, who is awesome, and all of her other horses, Sarlo added. We walked the grand prix course with Beezie and that was awesome. I do not know how she can do this. I did not notice how high the jumps really were until I was next to them. It is very technical and it is amazing how one little rail can change your perspective on how you turn to the jump or how fast you go to it. It was nice to learn. Isabelle Sanger-Johnson (15) was also on the trip for the first time in her three years with GEP. It is kind of surreal, she said of her visit to Wellington. Walking the course with Beezie was really fun. I have not jumped a lot, so I felt like it was a really good learning experience. It is also fun to hang out here with all of my friends. We all hang out at the barn and see each other pretty much every day, so we have had a great time. Gleneayre Equestrian Program s mission is to provide an experiential learning environment where children facing challenges such as academic, social, financial, family, or the challenges associated with military families, can feel safe and valued. It is a place where children and horses come together for the betterment of each other s lives through teaching sound horsemanship, ethics, and character skills; and youth have opportunities for physical and emotional growth, responsibility, and self-discovery. 8 Faces of WEF: Amanda Chiapetta EQUINE - FARM PROPERTY - GLOBAL ASSET PROTECTION Most Competitively Priced Medical Plans With No Copays Shapley s Grooms Class winner Amanda Chiapetta with Natural Nine. Lindsay Brock On Thursday afternoon of Week 5, Amanda Chiapetta groom at Amorim Stables made a last minute decision to enter the $1,000 Shapley s Grooms Class, sponsored by Shapley s Grooming Products, scheduled to take place the very next day. By Friday afternoon, she was basking in welldeserved recognition. Chiapetta, 27, took her turn in the spotlight among a record 28 Grooms Class entries and presented her charge, Natural Nine, owned by Amorim Stables, to judges Frank Madden, Diane Carney, and Alex Rheinheimer. After careful evaluation, their decision was unanimous and Chiapetta was called forward as the winner. Hearing her name called to collect the blue ribbon, Chiapetta wrapped her arms around the horse she calls Natty (short for Natural Nine) and clutched her very own blue ribbon. Natural Nine regularly competes in amateur jumper classes with his owner Gustavo Amorim, who Chiapetta has worked with for two years. I had heard about it and read about it and decided yesterday that I would go for it, said Chiapetta about her decision to enter her first-ever Grooms Class. I love this horse so much. He s just one of those horses he has so much personality and is so smart. After an injury sidelined Chiapetta from competing several years ago she turned to grooming to stay involved with horses, and she is confident right now it is where she belongs. I just love being around the horses, she said. I don t like being cooped up in an office I ve done that, and I keep coming back to horses every time. Sally Stith-Burdette of Shapley s Equine Grooming Products presented Chipaetta with a $600 cash prize, blue ribbon, and a collection of Shapley s supplies at the conclusion of the class. Shapley s has presented the Grooms Class for four years as a way to recognize the dedication and hard work of horse show grooms. The second Grooms Class of the 2016 WEF season will take place during Week 10. Here are five facts about WEF Week 5 Shapley s Grooms Class winner Amanda Chiapetta: 1. She s a local! Amanda moved to Wellington when she was seven years old and will always call it home. 2. She used to work as a paralegal for a defense attorney. 3. 12 Fidelity Grand Prix Continued from Page 1 Azur is taking a lot of the pressure, Ward admitted. But he has been pretty remarkable the last couple of years, what he has stepped up and done, and he does it with 100% heart and try. It is always wonderful to have a horse with that kind of heart and spirit. To have a horse like Rothchild that can compete at this 5* level, and win along with it, has allowed us to make good choices with Azur leading into Rio. twisty, turny course that suited a horse like Rothchild better than it did my horse Comanche. He is new to this going fast, and turns, and things like that. He is game, and positive and wants to do his job, and he is having fun doing it, so I was really pleased. I saw McLain s jump-off, and it was a super round and super ride. The horse jumped fabulous, and on a day like that, I would say he is almost unbeatable. A special Groom s Award was also presented Saturday night to Sean Kissane as the groom of Rothchild. Along with Kissane, Ward and Rothchild have a strong support system that includes longtime manager Lee McKeever. Bluman s mount, Califa LS, is a 13-yearold La Silla stallion (Carthago x Lux Z) that the rider has been partnered with since the end of last year s winter circuit. For Bluman, the night s third place finish was a dream come true, placing among the likes of Ward and Michaels-Beerbaum. Lee has helped keep everything together for 30 years for me, Ward acknowledged. His life, after his two kids, is his horses. We have had this horse since he was turning seven, and he is part of the family, and it has been a remarkable journey, as everybody knows. We care a lot for him. Second place finisher, Meredith MichaelsBeerbaum, was happy with her night on a newer mount in Comanche 28. The 10-yearold Oldenburg gelding (Coupe de Couer x Baloubet du Rouet) was competing in his second 5* ever and performed well through the very fast jump-off. I think it was a difficult jump-off, Michaels-Beerbaum noted. It was a very It is an unbelievable feeling that finally I am sitting right next to the people that I have been looking at from the beginning since I was seven years old and here I am, Bluman said in the press conference. It is just a very exciting moment, and I am thrilled. I literally can not believe I am sitting here right now. I have been here for seven years and honestly this is the fist year I have some horses to jump in the Saturday night classes, Bluman continued. It is my second 5* show of my life, and to be here with these geniuses right next to me, I have no words for what happened tonight. I still can t believe it. n Lauren Fisher Equestrio Celebration Party with Mouton Cadet at The Gallery, Launching New Issue Featuring Hannah Selleck. 14 Past WEF Sport Horse Auction Graduates to Begin Careers at Lothlorien Farm Amidst the hundreds of young prospects that Susan and Ariel Grange of Lothlorien Farm see each year on their travels throughout the international show jumping circuit, the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) Sport Horse Auction continues to be one of their favorite events to purchase talented youngsters that are destined for greatness in equestrian sport. Currently, the Granges own four horses purchased at past WEF Sport Horse Auctions, and many are coming into their own now, just at the beginning stages of their training and development. They re all starting up right now. We typically try to give them [time] off because we bought them as three-year-olds and really would prefer to give them a year in the field, explained Ariel Grange, who is incredibly hands-on during the training process and extremely knowledgeable about each prospect. We do have to test them though. We can t just bring them home and not see what we re going to be working with, so we ll put them in the ring a few times to see where they re at and then we take their shoes off and put them in field so that they can relax. There is personal enjoyment in bringing up the babies for Grange at their family operation, which houses some of the world s best equine competitors with facilities in Ontario, Canada, and Wellington, FL. Lothlorien Farm proudly owns several top international athletes including Ian Millar s Dixson, as well as a number of mounts for top Irish rider Conor Swail, including Simba de la Roque and Martha Louise. When we bring them back, we do a little bit more, Grange continued. It s more about getting them used to things. We have a lot of fillers and a lot of crazy jumps that we try to get them comfortable with before we even think about taking them to the shows. The show can be so scary and loud. We never want to overwhelm or over-face them so we always take it slow. At the 2015 edition of the auction, Grange admitted that she and her mother could Essedon, a graduate of the WEF Sport Horse Auction. Meg Banks. not agree on which horse they wanted to purchase, so they decided to buy two. Ariel bought one for herself, a stunning chestnut mare purchased under the name VDL Gina and now known as Essedon. Together, they bid on a large dapple grey gelding formerly known as VDL Glenn BH, and now called Remington. Remington and Essedon were both so big when we got them and still are big, so it just took a little bit longer to get their brains in tune with their bodies. They both have ended up being a lot more mature than I think we expected them to be, so we were able to do more with them as soon as we brought them home, she noted, while explaining the process and progression within their training program. We want them to be babies and have that time. It helps get some of the rowdiness out of them too. They all are just the sweetest horses and so well behaved. They re all doing so well, and I don t think that we could be any happier with them, she said.
