7 We would like to thank our 2018 Advertisers! Calligraphic QCDC logo horses are stylized by the free-hand pen of Leopardo Antonozzi, who lived in Italy about 1650 A.D. Adams Equine Wellness BEST General Contracting Bethany Vet Service: Karin Clark DVM Brubaker Grain & Farm Supply Derek McFadden DVM Mary Kay Cosmetics/Zuzane Parette Miamitown Pet Hospital Midwest Truck & Trailer Dr. Nancy Nicholson Biomechanics Old Stone Riding Center At this time the Classic Masters (ecuyers) Menou de Charnizay, Pierre de la Noue, Jaques de Solleysel and Gaspard Saunier were active in Continental riding academies. The type of horse is the Neopolitan equine of Antonozzi s Italy. Françoise Robichon de la Gueriniérè was 70 years in the future and the Spanish Riding School of Vienna was still nearly a century away. Dressage comes from dresser, to position. A raised poll and lowered hindquarters were considered an essential foundation for classical collected exercises. A later type of horse accompanied the introduction of extended movements and flying changes of leg at the canter into the dressage school. The current richness of dressage sport and art is a reflection of its long international history. Graphic Design :: Nancy L. 8 TIPS FOR FREESTYLES Training Level Freestyle Rules The USDF has current score sheets for Musical Freestyles for Training Level and above. ( Time: USDF Freestyle time limit 5 minutes. There is no minimum time. Timing and judging commence when the horse moves off after the entry salute and ceases at the final salute. No bell is sounded at the end of the time limit. Movements executed after the time limit are not scored. The rider must enter the arena or signal the sound engineer within 45 seconds of the entry bell, or will be eliminated. The rider must enter the arena within 20 seconds of the start of the music, or will be eliminated. Technical Execution Time Max: 5 minutes Enter within 20 seconds of music start Judges: If two or more judges officiate in a class, all judge both Technical and Artistic categories. Half Points allowed for judge s final marks. Compulsory Movements should be clear. Besides the compulsory elements for each level freestyle and the movements from the USEF dressage tests at the corresponding level, the following movements and transitions are additionally allowed in USDF freestyle competition: Training Level Canter-trot-canter transitions with a minimum of 20 meters between the canter transitions, Trot-halt-trot transitions, Trot-walk-trot transitions, Trot serpentine or single loop Larger serpentines with loops no smaller than 15 meters. First Level Turn on the forehand, Any configuration of leg-yield Trot circles of 10 meters or larger Trot or canter lengthening on a 20 meter circle, Counter-canter,Canter serpentines, Canter circles of 15 meters or larger. Second Level Renvers (removed from the standard USEF Second Level tests but still allowed in Second Level freestyles), Half turn on the haunches of no more than 180 degrees, Trot circles of 10 meters or larger Medium canter or trot on a 20 meter circle, Medium canter on a diagonal. Third Level Renvers (now included in the standard tests), Half-pass counter-change of hand with only one change of direction (two half-passes), Half pirouette in walk, Canter to halt, Trot and canter circles of 10 meters or larger. Fourth Level Half-pass zigzag in trot and canter (three or more half-passes), Canter pirouettes, Three-tempi changes, Trot and canter circles of eight meters or larger. More at: Artistic Impression Possible Points Coefficient Half points may be used for judge s final marks. Harmony between horse and rider 10 4 Choreography, use of arena, inventiveness, Design cohesiveness, balance, Ingenuity and creativity 10 4 Degree of difficulty 10 1 Music 10 3 Interpretation 10 3 Conditions for Freestyles: Arena: Standard. 10 USEF Rule: Except for USEF/USDF Championship classes and for Prix St. Georges Freestyles, in order to enter a freestyle class at any level [recognized show], a horse/rider combination must have received a minimum score of 60% in the highest test of the declared freestyle level or any test of a higher level at a USEF recognized show. A photocopy of the test verifying eligibility must be submitted with the entry for a freestyle class. Movements above the level carry a penalty, but not elimination. QCDC Rule: riders are advised that while it is not necessary to qualify for a schooling show entry, the USDF freestyle score sheet will be used and will require movements that include those from the highest test of the level. Music Failure: If music fails during a Freestyle Test, the rider may leave the arena with permission of the judge at C. The rider may decide whether or not to restart the test from the beginning. Two CDs requested, check with management. Movements Above the Level not advised! Penalized by a four point deduction from the total for Technical Execution for each illegal movement, but not for each recurrence of the same movement. In the past, freestyle competitors were permitted to include some movements and transitions that were found at a higher level for example, performing a simple change of lead (a Second Level movement) in a First Level freestyle but this is no longer the case. To avoid confusion, the USDF Freestyle Committee recommends including only movements that appear in the standard USEF dressage tests or that are listed as compulsory elements at or below the level you are showing. There are a few exceptions to this rule, and they are listed on the freestyle score sheets and in Additionally Allowed on the facing page. Omitted compulsory elements receive a 0 and are averaged into the Judge s Marks. Judge s marks for Technical Execution must be given in half points or full points (no tenths). Posting will be allowed where a level permits it; sitting is optional. Must be ridden in a standard arena (20 x 60 meters). * This is a summary of requirements. Riders are responsible for downloading and reading the current original USDF score sheet rules. 11

23 Courtesy Classes Suggestions For Advertisers 1) Image size for ads are 7.7 inches high and 4.7 inches wide. Keep these proportions, please! 2) Try to have your ad in a file format that will print at a high resolution for best quality. The file formats of TIF, PDF (hi res), are acceptable, but EPS files (Encapsulated PostScript) are preferred by page layout software in general use. GIF, & JPG are raster compression formats and often yield poor results. Resolution (dpi or dots per inch) is important: 150 or 300 dpi will look a whole lot better than web standard 72 dpi. Low resolution raster (pixel-based) files get seriously unlovely cases of the jaggies. Be wise and keep your original layered master documents if there is a need to edit (usually Photoshop.psd files or Word.doc files). Remember, those of you who have Word 2008 that NOT EVERYONE HAS SOFTWARE THAT CAN READ.docx files! Alternative readable (legacy) formats are in a popup menu in your print dialog. 3) Ask your Omnibus consultants about print sizes and file formats if in doubt. Also ask about font choices. Some novelty fonts print badly. There are three fonts on this page (Arial, Bickham Script Multiple master and Lucida Calligraphic. This is to illustrate that you may lose your graphic design visual joy if you use too many different serifed (Times New Roman), cursive (Bickham Script) or novelty (Curlz) fonts. Non-serifed fonts (Arial) are easy to read and design does not compete with legibility. 4) Remember that business cards with complicated logos may lose resolution (see #2 above) and/or crispness when scanned or faxed. This means that small text, fine lines and pale grays may actually disappear or become blurred in scans or subsequent re-sizing of your image file. If need be, send your logo as a separate file so it can be sized without distortion to fit the ad space. Make sure all contact information is current and clearly displayed. 5) Contrast of gray scale images should be kept high enough so there are clear differences in the parts of an image. In the engraving from Ecole de Cavalerie above, there are black blacks and white whites. Background textures create visual hash. The Digital Goddess reserves the right to alter layouts to keep resolution and visual balance. The Digital Goddess. 40 Courtesy Classes - NOT eligible for Year End Awards Scores can be printed in YEA Banquet Program at QCDC Directors Discretion Riders should download, print and bring 2 copies of current test SCORE sheets.
