3 WLSA NEWS Page 3 Inter-Agency Fun Shoot VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Wild Sheep Society of BC Date: June 9, 2013 Place: 920 Bond Lake Road Time: Dressed & ready at 8:00 am Cost: $40 for WLSA members - $45 for non-members Includes dinner at the end of the match Course of Fire: RCMP, Conservation Officer, Sheriff and three IPSC courses of fire 4 members per team minimum of one female shooter from same agency/ipsc, max. 3 teams per agency/ipsc, only one team must have a female. One OUTCAST team, one member from each agency/ipsc Tactical Shoot one t5wo person team per agency/ipsc May 16, 2013: all competitors are to be signed up and course of fire to be sent out. May 23, 2013: all competitors are to be paid up Table prizes to be drawn during meal. Two CZ Shadow 9mm pistols The Wild Sheep Society of BC is looking for your help on a weekend work-bee. This is a great opportunity to contribute to on the ground work to enhance wild sheep and wild sheep habitat in BC. You ll also get a chance to get to know other hunting, outdoor and conservation enthusiasts from all over the province. The Society is teaming up with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources and private stakeholders to protect a range fence in a bighorn transplant and lamb recruitment study area. This weekend s project is a fire protection step of brushing out the fence line and creating a fire guard of about 10 meters wide by 2km long. A habitat enhancement burn will be taking place at a later date to improve range that has deteriorated over decades of fire suppression. Overall this is a fantastic, flagship, multilevel project for wild sheep and mule deer and a great opportunity to show what we can do for wildlife. We are looking for a minimum of 20 volunteers to supply ATV s, chainsaws, brushsaws, hand tools and good old fashioned general labour! So bring whatever you ve got! Volunteers are asked to arrive Friday night or early Saturday morning. A camping area with trailer access will be available and the worksite itself will be accessed by quad. Saturday night will be a potluck dinner so bring your best camp recipe! Date: Friday evening, May 10 th Sunday May 12 th (if you can only make it for 1 day, that s great too) For more detailed information and directions contact Jacques Drisdelle at jdrisdelle@shaw.ca Feds restore long-waived gun licence fees, expect $18 M annually in revenue The Calgary Herald April 14, 2013 OTTAWA - The Conservative government is ending a seven-year waiver on gun licence renewal fees next month in an effort to collect about $18 million annually from firearms owners. New changes to the firearms regulations were quietly posted in the Canada Gazette on the weekend that restore the $60 licence fee for non-restricted weapons. The Conservatives brought in a two-year waiver on the fees in May 2006 and had extended it every year until now. "The government will not renew the current fee waiver in the current climate of fiscal restraint," said the Canada Gazette post, dated April 13. Two other measures that the government says are designed to encourage compliance with firearms regulations will be extended by one year, however. Gun owners who let their possession-only licences expire have been allowed to re-apply since 2008 without having to pay to go through a firearms safety course, as the regulations require. That break continues to May And an amnesty on criminal charges for failing to licence or register non-restricted weapons for people "who were taking steps to comply with these equirements" has also been extended. The Canada Gazette notes that although the long-gun registry was ended by legislation last year, it remains in effect by court order in Quebec. And the amnesty provisions are pitched as a means of keeping Quebecers registering those rifles and shotguns. "Accordingly, the extension of the Amnesty Order would encourage compliance by owners of non-restricted firearms with the licensing requirements across Canada, and in Quebec, with the registration of non-restricted firearms," states the government document. The Conservatives ended the long-gun registry last spring for a savings of about $2 million annually, a figure confirmed in documents prepared for Public Safety Minister Vic Toews but never publicized by the government. Last September the Conservatives began phasing back in the higher $80 licence fee for restricted and prohibited weapons that had been waived. In May 2012 Conservative MP Candice Bergen told the House of Commons that the fee waivers were being phased out, but she framed it as the government providing "extra time" for people to renew their fiveyear licences at no cost. "This is good news for law-abiding gun owners and good news for taxpayers," she said at the time. According to the Canada Gazette, non-restricted gun licences alone are expected to bring in $18 million in additional revenue each year.
