1 National Bird Dog Museum Living Legends Luncheon NEWSLETTER 2018 Days of our lives are like sands in an hourglass they pass by faster than we realize. On June 2, 2018 we celebrated some of those lives. These lives were those of living legends of the field trial world. Their achievements, talents, and admiration for each other, along with the respect others have for them, is what makes them legends. Although some reading this newsletter may never meet these ladies and gentlemen, their stories will live on for years to come among bird dog enthusiasts. Over the years many of these legends have competed against each other and have had the occasional disagreement, but they all have shared experiences and a passion for bird hunting and field trialing. This has led to an unequaled comradery and lifelong friendships. Although many of those who were present do not consider themselves legends, they all hope to instill this passion for the sports into the next generation so that they can someday become legends themselves. One of the legends stated, My body knows I am old, but my mind refuses to believe it. This is true for many of the legends, but they are still going strong today. Ray Trimble is still competing in field trials at 92 years old. Collier Smith is still working on Coushatta Plantation in Alabama. Delmar Smith, Harold Ray, and Buddy Smith are still training dogs. The list could go on We came together on this truly special occasion to honor these men and women who have introduced many to the joys of the field trial and bird hunting sports. Hearing the legends colorful stories during the event made it obvious that many of them are like one big family and that they have been there for one another through many of life s highs and lows. The main take away from the day was that we need to rally together now more than ever to keep the love of the field trial and bird hunting sports alive and to preserve the history of the sports.
