4 THURSDAY FEBRUARY P Whitetail Prep Work Ron Grams Ron is going to start a deer head right from scratch. A manikin from the box, a cape fresh from the tannery and all of the parts. We ll start the head tonight and finish the mounting process during the live mounting on Friday. Along the way, we re going to cover anything deer and talk about some business things like how long things REALLY take in your shop. FRIDAY FEBRUARY A WI DNR Andrew Lundin Once again we will have a question and answer session concerning the laws that pertain to taxidermy. You can your questions to Rick Lange at langerpdc@gmail.com. Rick will forward them to our Conservation Officer for evaluation prior to the show. This is always a jam packed two hours and we re glad to continue a good working relation with WIDNR and thank Andy for his time. 10A-12P Fish Finish Work Cole Cruishank When you mount and dry a fish, it is NOT ready for paint. Epoxy work on those shrunken areas is necessary for even good commercial work. Our fish judge, Cole, is going to demonstrate this rebuilding and talk eye setting and fin work too. 1 5P Live Mounting Heads By popular demand, the Live Mounting is back. We re going to have four experts mounting various game heads. At this time, it s hard to get things nailed down, but, we hope to have a Whitetail, mule deer, antelope and a bear happening at one time. This four hours is geared to everyday commercial work, nothing fancy. Pick your favorite and pull up a chair or mingle and take in a little from each one. 6:30P Kid s Activity SATURDAY FEBRUARY 23 8A-12P Ladies Activity Laura Wolf Laura has arranged a morning of massage for the ladies. There will be a sign up sheet for fifteen minute time slots and the cost will be a dollar per minute. What a great way to start your morning!! 8 10A Mammal Seminar Lance VanDusen Reference, reference, reference! We hear it at every show, every seminar and probably at every critique. Making death masks is relatively easy and inexpensive and makes a great piece of reference that you can do yourself. Our mammal judge, Lance is going to show us how this can be done and improve your mammal work. 1 3P Bird Seminar Dale Manning Our bird judge, Dale, comes to us from Missoula, Montana. Here, he lives with his wife, Jennifer and son, Owen. He owns and operates a full time shop where they work on all types of animals. Dale also sells a product called Habitat Rock. Dale s seminar is going to be geared more to competition techniques. He will talk about detail waterfowl finishing and also discuss artistic presentation, which applies to all forms of taxidermy, so there is something here for everyone. 3 5P Whitetail Seminar Owen Eldred Our Whitetail judge comes to us from Michigan where he lives with his wife and four kids. Owen works as a full time Taxidermist working with the Wildlife Gallery. Owen also raises his own deer which is a great advantage. This one, too, will be more of a competition oriented seminar. Owen will show us how to cast our own ear liners. Whether you re a seasoned veteran or new to competing, you have to keep current on these casting techniques and products. Jeff & Olivia Herrick The activity will be announced, but, as usual, please call Jeff or Olivia Herrick if you plan on having children involved. (920) We thank them for their part in having fun with the kids, and maybe giving the parents some time to take part in the social and raffles. Questions? Critiques will be held to a 10 minutes max, a Cr WTA member will enforce the 10 minute rule. Pre-Registratiion deadline is Feb 7, , tw two we w ek e s before the show. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES The competition is many things to many people. Some people come to learn, some to prove their abilities to the public and other competitors, some to express themselves artistically, and some for the camaraderie. All these things are important aspects of our competition. With these things in mind, we have put together this list of goals and objectives to make the competition more clearly understood for the betterment of the WTA, its members, the judges and the viewing public. The Junior Division is for young people, 18 years of age and under. It is intended to promote interest in taxidermy for the next generation. The Senior Division is for members that are at least 60 years old. Mounts will be judged by ballot by entrants in the Masters Division on a five-foot rule. There will be a single ribbon, 1st, 2nd, 3rd with a trophy awarded for 1st Place. The Amateur Division is for all taxidermists from a beginner wanting to start competing to someone at the highest level who has never competed before. If you are not quite sure of what division to get in, the Amateur is a great starting point. Competitors will get a full critique of their mount. They will be judged by WTA qualified members. Like in the Open Division, emphasis is on the specimen and not on the base work. One sided fish are allowed in this division. There are no categories. This is a multi-ribbon division (1st, 2nd, 3rd, Honorable Mention). With one (1) award given to the best amateur mount. Once a competitor has won a blue ribbon on a certain type of mount (bird, fish, mammal, gamehead, deerhead) then you are required to move to the Open Division. The Open Division is for anyone that is interested in learning to be the best taxidermist they can be. In this division people are encouraged to learn how to mount the specimens correctly. Judging for this category is focused on the specimen(s) and their construction. Judges will be instructed NOT to consider any bases or artistic merit, when they score these entries. Remember, you are here to learn the taxidermy. The Masters Division is for people who have mastered the taxidermy and are now moving on to creating artistic renditions. These entries will be judged at a National level for technique and artistry of the entire mount. Insight :: Page Page Insight
