I am actually on the ball this year and I m already working on this years pieces. I got lucky and won the elk tag lottery for South Dakota. What a hunt that was!!!! Found out I drew my tag in June and all I could think about was elk all summer. Finally October came around I got a bunch of work in the shop in September so I could only take a few weeks off to elk hunt. September 28th came and I packed up the truck and trailer and headed for the Black Hills!!!! Got out and set up camp and scouted the first night seen a couple cows and heard some bulls bugling after dark. The second morning of scouting was amazing I got into the elk herd right away and took a ton of pictures and followed them all day. The next day I decided to stay away from that area and check out some other areas. That was a bust, didn t see or hear any elk until after dark when I drove past the area I seen the elk on Friday. Saturday night I was so tired I went to bed at 8 and was up at 3am, so excited to get after the elk. I went down to the valley the elk were feeding in to make sure they were still there and they were. So I went up to catch them heading to the bedding areas in hopes to intercept them I was out there at 4:30 am and it doesn t get light until 7:00 so I had time to study the landscape with my onx map to decide what saddle they would come up on. As luck would have it I picked the right one about 7:30 I could hear them bugling and coming to me. Somehow the heard bull and cows got by me and I was trying to catch up with the heard, that s when I could hear a bull bugle behind me. I quickly sat down and started doing some lost cow calls and he came right to me on a string. He got to 75 yards and I punched a bullet into him and laid him down right there. I jumped up and started high fiving myself and couldn t believe what just happened. Then was the fun of breaking him down and getting him caped out, luckily it was a cool morning. That was the highlight of my hunting season after that it was going to be hard to top that excitement, I had a archery tag and drew my east river tags. Seen some nice bucks but nothing I would put on the wall. I had the wildlife gallery do a rush on my cape and I have it back already so I will be entering that in this years show. Hope everyone else is having a great hunting and taxidermy year. I follow most of you on Facebook but not everyone is on Facebook. This year is going to be another great show, we have a great line up of judges. We will be taking entry s this year on Thursday night for those who get there early, and we will be doing a seminar that night as well. So keep that in mind when you are making your plans. I have made some changes on the layout of the show room floor to make it less congested and try to separate the masters and the professional categories. I hope everyone is excited as I am for this years show it s always like a family reunion. Good luck on everyone s pieces and getting the to the show safely. See you all in March!!!!!!! 3 A Word From Your Vice-President Well, it s that time of year again...hunting season is over and the holidays are behind us. I hope everyone has had a fantastic year. I was fortunate enough to do quite a bit of hunting and fishing this year. In May, Dalton and I went to Fort Thompson paddle fishing and I got a 55 pounder and Dalton got a 60 pounder. In October, we went archery hunting west river and hunted four days with no deer harvested, but had a lot of fun. I went back out west three days before rifle opened out there and archery hunted/scouted for rifle opener. At 12:15 on the 3rd day of rifle I shot a 4x5 mule with a 5 inch drop tine (I now have a drop time mule and whitetail so I feel pretty lucky). I was 2.5 miles from the pickup, it was the first time I have ever butchered a deer and carried him out. We all got our east river rifle deer but nothing to brag about. In December Dalton and I tried our luck at Sand Lake Refuge but were not successful. Glenda and I did a lot of fishing this summer, brought home a few pans of fish but most of all had a great time. I would like to announce that I will not be running for Vice President this year, as I have taken a full time job at Terex in Watertown and don t feel I will have enough time. I look forward to seeing you all in March. Jamie McNutt, SDTA Vice President A Trophy of a Lifetime Taxidermy Studio Hello All, A Word From Your Secretary/Treasurer So another year has flown by us, unbelievable. This has been a year of change for our household, as Dalton graduated high school in May and we became empty nesters in October when Jamez went back to LA from summer break. Hard to believe that he is staring his final year, where did 4 years go (guess that means we are making a trip to LA in June)? But then I guess I also can t believe that I have been in the floral business for 3 years, wow how time flies. Also new to our house is Jamie being gone working a real job, he hasn t punched a time clock for about 20 years. We had a great year, lots of fishing, dirt bike racing, being with friends and working. I did enjoy deer hunting again this year, it is never a dull moment with my great guide. I love sitting in the deer blind and watching the deer, then when my husband starts rattling them in it is great entertainment! I filled my tag, not the biggest but it is food on the table. I always give the guys hell that you can t eat the horns but I find myself getting picky, but didn t have time this year (worked called). My days now revolve around funeral work so I never really get to plan my day, I m not complaining by any means. Who knew a flower shop would work in small town USA. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in March, please make sure and look over the registration form carefully as we have made several changes to it. This year we will be collecting your meal tickets at the buffet line so please make sure and bring them with you, you CANNOT LEAVE THEM IN YOUR PACKETS. Also look over the schedule as we have stuff going on for everyone on Thursday evening now if you can join us. Finally, we have exciting news as this year we will be giving out TWO $500 SCHOLARSHIPS so please go on our website and fill out an application. Let me know if you have any questions. Glenda

5 Judges Daniel Meng - Gameheads and Mammals Clint Rickey - Whitetail Deer Heads Troy Rose - Birds Rick Krane - Fish TROY ROSE - I have been instructing students over 20 years and have practiced the art of taxidermy for over 32 years. I have had the opportunity to work with many talented taxidermists throughout the US. I currently own and operate Artistic School of Taxidermy in Kooskia, Idaho. I ve been competing professionally in State and National taxidermy competitions since I was fortunate enough to grace the cover of Breakthrough Magazine with flushing pheasant. I am a certified judge in all aspects of taxidermy and I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management from Utah State University. I would like to thank your association for having me as one of your Judges. DANIEL MENG - of Dakota Taxidermy is an exceptionally talented young man. With connections to several zoos and museums in Ohio, Daniel has had the opportunity to handle live animals and the hides of animals most of us can only dream of. At 14, Daniel was commissioned by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to mount a cheetah. In 2009 he entered the World Taxidermy Championship and won the Best Novice category at age 15. By age 21 Daniel has won several awards at National and World level, including the 2016 World Champion Large Mammal award with a Leopard. Daniels extensive knowledge of mammals and time spent working with many World Champions makes Daniel a welcome addition for the second year to the SDTA Judges line up. CLINT RICKEY - I grew up on a small family farm in rural Southwest Wisconsin. As a young boy my passion was wildlife. I remember many summers going to a local pond after getting done with all my chores and fishing until I couldn t see my line anymore. Those many quiet nights are what started my infatuation with the outdoors. After graduating from high school, I started working in the construction industry and after a few years of doing that I realized it wasn t for me. It was then that I really started to think about what I enjoyed the most and that was wildlife. I started researching schools and other training opportunities for learning taxidermy. During that process, I found a man named, Brad Bishop, who was willing to give me some one-on-one training. Over the course of one year, I drove five hours on many weekends to meet Brad for training, which as you can imagine, was not the most convenient for me. It was during that time spent with Brad, where I was introduced to the art of taxidermy. In 2003, I started Rickey Ridge Taxidermy and I have been growing the business ever since. My goal is to never stop refining my skills as a wildlife artist, and to continue being the best I can be at what I do. For a complete list of my awards please visit awards.php I look forward to seeing you all in March.
