Whether you are a newcomer to the outdoors or an aspiring outdoors-woman, BOW can introduce you to a variety of outdoor activities and can provide you with the opportunity for continued skills development. 2 Attention BOW Registrants Workshop dates and times will be determined for the BOW weekend based on demand and/or instructor availability. Therefore, the 2019 Workshop Roster may be subject to change. Priority in workshop choices are given in order of registration. Please indicate your preferred TOP 4 WORKSHOPS for each scheduled session on the corresponding registration form (when it becomes available online). We encourage you to read the below workshop descriptions, they are here to provide you with background information on the workshop and assist you with making your workshop choices. FOR SUCCESSFUL REGISTRANTS: A registration package with confirmation of your individual workshop schedules and the weekend agenda will be sent to you after April 26, 2019 via and mail. Information on specific workshops, packing suggestions, additional program activities, friendly reminders and a map to the Circle Square Ranch will also be included in your registration package. Waterfowl Hunting 101 Wildlife Encounter Safety Training Wildlife Encounter Safety Training Handguns Handguns On the Water Archery Learn the basics of archery, including equipment, accessories, safety, and hunting ethics. We will then move to the range for target and 3D target shooting practice. Advanced Archery Bring your bow if you have one this workshop will take you a step farther in your archery and archery hunting skills. You will have the opportunity to move off the range and into the field. Experience shooting at 3D targets, accessing 2

3 distances, and getting a better feel of archery in a hunting scenario. All Terrain Biking This workshop is an introduction to the core skills of All Terrain Biking! Make your biking adventures safe and successful; hit the trails around Circle Square Ranch with our expert instructors from Jo Brook Outdoors! All bikes and equipment will be provided. ATV Training This course will familiarize you with ATV s! You will get to have some fun and tour on the ATV s through Austin Circle Square Ranch s diverse landscapes. Valid driver s license is required. Field Dressing Big Game and Fowl in the Field Do you want to start hunting on your own? Learn what to do with a big game animal after you have taken the shot and located your downed game. Practice hands-on field dressing techniques with livestock to prepare yourself for that hunting situation. In this workshop you will also be able to practice game bird cleaning techniques on chickens. Learn how to pluck, clean and process chickens. These new techniques will help you properly clean all types of birds, including wild game such as ducks, geese, grouse, pheasants or partridge. Filleting Now that you have caught your fish where do you begin? This filleting workshop will give you hands-on instruction with filleting techniques, working with knives, preparing your catch and cooking it to perfection tail-gate style. Fishing This is your opportunity to learn how to handle fishing gear and even fish on your own! Learn how to tie knots, how to cast and how to choose your gear. This course will include some shoreline fishing practice with the possibility of fishing from a boat (weather and boat availability dependent). Fly Fishing PART 1 This two-part series will teach the fundamentals of fly fishing with an expert instructor. Part one will focus on basic fishing knots, basic entomology, fly selection, and casting. Fly Fishing PART 2 This two-part series will teach the fundamentals of fly fishing with an expert instructor. Part two focuses on reading the water, information on fly fishing opportunities and then we go fishing! All equipment is provided, and to ensure that as much time is spent on the water, be prepared to leave the ranch at 7:30AM (You must register for and complete Fly Fishing Part 1 to participate in Fly Fishing Part 2). Handguns Learn from the experts! The Austin and Area Wildlife Association will teach you how to safely and properly shoot handguns. Try your hand at a variety of calibers with an experienced instructor to help you. This workshop will begin with an in-class overview and briefing to get you familiarized with the firearms and will then move to the range to do some target shooting! Intro to Get Your Bearings/GPS Learn to navigate in the outdoors using a map and compass. This skill is useful for hiking, backpacking, hunting, bird watching and other outdoor activities, and is becoming a popular recreational activity in its own right (orienteering). A short exercise will allow you to try your skills and build confidence in a team situation. Take your map and compass skills and bring them into 21st century technology using a Global Positioning System. Your car may even have a GPS, but do you know how to use it? 3

4 Introduction to Paddling and Kayaking Work with experienced instructors to tackle the fundamentals of paddling and the challenges of steering and travelling with a kayak. Also, develop an understanding of equipment options and safety considerations while on the water. Intro to Trapping Who is up for skinning a muskrat? Practice proper skinning techniques on real muskrats and get some hands on experience with various trap sets. Knotty Girls Feeling a little knotty? Want to tie one on? Why knot try this workshop? Imagine what you can twist-up, tie-up and knot up! Muzzleloaders Looking to enjoy big game firearms hunting without the cold weather? Like the idea of traditional shooting? This workshop will teach you how to safely handle, load, shoot and clean muzzleloaders. Natural Woman It seems most of the products we buy these days have chemicals in them that they now are saying are damaging to our bodies and/or the environment. In this workshop we will explore alternatives to some of these products, which include nature-all skin, hair and body care, including some of the essential oils that can benefit your beauty routine. If we have time we will talk about foraging beneficial plants and growing herbs in your own backyard! There will be some hands-on making a product for you to take home! Please bring a towel to this workshop! On the Water Jump in as we head to the water with a fully rigged fishing boat! Try your hand at launching and driving the boat, learn the basics about electronics, and wet a line with a pro angler. There is a lot to cover, so our group will be leaving the ranch at 7:00 AM on Sunday morning. No experience necessary and all gear will be provided. Outdoor Mechanics/Small Engine Repair Fundamental tips on how to safely operate and maintain fuel powered equipment. Learn the basics, fuel mixes and the safe operation of equipment with Recreational Revolutions! Rifle Learn basic firearm safety, safe handling techniques, and range safety before venturing out to refine your rifle shooting techniques and sharpen your marksmanship skills. A variety of rifles will be on hand for participants to use under the guidance of instructors. Shotgunning Learn basic firearm safety and safe handling techniques, as well as how to load and unload various types of shotguns. There will be ample opportunity for each participant to shoot at clay targets under the supervision of the instructor. Shotgunning and Firearms Maintenance Expand your knowledge in proper firearms cleaning and maintenance. Learn how to dissemble and clean a shotgun and expand your knowledge on gun options and accessories. Of course, in this shotgunning workshop you will get your fill on some one-on-one instruction shooting targets! So Now You Want to Hunt Big Game! This class is for women who have completed most of the basic skills classes or you have this background already. You want to take the next step for preparing for your Big Game Hunt. Find out what to take, where to go, what to pack, what to wear and so much more! If you have questions about some gear you own, feel free to bring it and we can talk about it. Be prepared to go walking in the bush! Survival Skills PART 1 This two part series covers the necessary skills for surviving overnight outdoors. Part one includes fire-making, food, water, and wilderness awareness. 4

5 Survival Skills PART 2 This two part series covers the necessary skills for surviving overnight outdoors. Part two focuses on shelter building skills and wilderness awareness, and includes a special knife-sharpening lesson. Taxidermy Do you want to preserve the memory of your catch or game for a lifetime? Learn from an experienced taxidermist the basics of preparing your trophy for display. Turkey Talk Learn about establishment and management efforts of Manitoba's Wild Turkey. And for those interested in hunting turkeys we will be touching on hunting safety and ethics, hunting regulations, hunting techniques, equipment and calling. Waterfowl hunting 101 Aside from fishing, one of Manitoba s greatest assets is its bird hunting opportunities. Canada geese are abundant around Winnipeg. Ducks flourish on the many large marshes (Delta, Netley and Whitewater Lake) and in grain stubble throughout the farmed landscape. We will teach you the basics for hunting these birds. Where to go, what you need and how to go about it. Wildlife Encounter Safety Training The thought of encountering a bear, wolf, cougar or other potentially dangerous animal in the wild, can be both thrilling and terrifying. Tame your fears! Learn how to prevent negative encounters with wildlife and how to respond in a wildlife encounter. This workshop includes classroom instruction and outdoor practice with deterrents. You + Nature = MAGIC Level 1 We'll start with some outdoor yoga to connect with ourselves and the earth then settle in for an introductory class on meditation. We'll wrap up with a heart to heart about life, spirituality and the magic and medicine of rediscovering ourselves through nature. Perfect if you're new to yoga and meditation and open to exploring spirituality and nature. You + Nature = MAGIC Level 2 We will start with yoga then settle in for a journey meditation and wrap up with a women's circle style discussion about life, spirituality and discovering ourselves through the cycles of nature. Perfect if you have some yoga and meditation experience and are comfortable exploring spirituality and spiritual practice 5

Buildings resemble a wild west town. All accommodations are dormitories with bunk beds. A number of heated covered wagons accommodating up to 8 people are also available. (A heavier weight cold weather sleeping bag is recommended.) No individual accommodations are available, and dormitories may not be suitable for light sleepers. If you wish to stay in wagons and/or room with a particular person, please indicate so on the registration form. Meals: If you have special dietary needs, depending on the severity, you may need to bring your own food/ dietary supplements. A fridge and microwave are available. Please indicate on the registration form if you have allergies or dietary restrictions and/or contact the MWF at prior to registering for more information. Registration Deadline is April 26 th or until the program reaches capacity: Except in the case of medical or family emergencies, registrants who do not attend and who do not cancel prior to April 26th will not be entitled to a refund. Confirmation of workshops will be sent after April 26 th via and mail. No changes to workshop selection can be made after this date. *BOW LIVE AUCTION In order to help defray the costs and support the BOW program, a group of BOW Instructors has volunteered to host an auction! Instructors will be donating related items near and dear to them, or that they used or make in our sessions at BOW. PARTICIPANTS are also invited to donate a craft or hobby item they have produced or even a white elephant item. Participants who donate an item will receive an entry to win one FREE REGISTRATION TO the 2020 BOW WEEKEND! All money raised goes directly to the BOW program.
