1 Gunsmoke February-March 2014 Gunsmoke The Official Newsletter of the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association February - March 2014 World Championship Rifle Matches to be Held at Camp Perry in 2015 Ho Ho Ho Pistol Page 9 Akron Rifle Page 15 Bird Dog Challenge Page 14 Cimarron Young Guns Page 13 SERVING OHIO WITH PRIDE SINCE 1934 By ORPA Highpower Co-Director Keith Bailey For those of us not able to go to Sochi next year, we have the opportunity to see a World Championship competition in our own backyard the following year. In 2015, the World Championship Fullbore Rifle Matches will be sponsored by the NRA and held at Camp Perry, Ohio in August of Make plans now to schedule some vacation or downtime to compete or watch part of the world championship matches. The fullbore rifle matches are similar to our standard NRA Highpower rifle matches and are fired at distances from 300 yards to 1,000 yards. They are fired with either match rifles or F-Class rifles. Ammunition is limited to either.308 Winchester or.223. The matches are governed by the International Confederation of Fullbore Rifle Associations (ICFRA). The ICFRA is made up 30 full and associate member countries, whose national rifle associations govern fullbore (highpower) rifle shooting. The course of fire uses different targets than the standard US targets and there are some special rules that apply. Standard scoring practices during fullbore matches allow for two convertible sighters to be used at each stage of fire. They are called convertible because the shooter may elect to have one or both of these transferred to the scored shot section of the scorecard so that they will count as record shots. The targets used are 5V targets in which scoring is recorded as 2, 3, 4, 5, and V which is similar to our 7, 8, 9, 10 and X. These targets are the same as those which our international teams such as the Palma team must shoot when competing in foreign countries. If you have the time, a rehearsal for the World Championships will be held following the 2014 Camp Perry Highpower National Championships. Several countries will send teams to the US for a practice run for This will allow the National Matches staff at Camp Perry to familiarize themselves with procedures, targets, scoring etc. before the actual World Championships in The tentative schedule continued on page 5

2 2 The New Year has arrived and with it some really cold weather!! I know that while not a lot of shooting may be going on lots of prep work is. New guns and gear acquired over the Holidays are being gone over just waiting for that change in the weather that will allow you to get out, try it out and break it in right. The shooting season will be here before you know it. Some disciplines with indoor access shoot year round. Some like Cowboy Action just light up the fire barrel and shoot outside anyway, any weather. I m sure some load development is also under way. Reloading can be half the fun, but be careful mistakes at the loading press can have devastating effects. I want to again thank our friends at NRA for their continuing support of the association. They have been most generous with a State Association grant to partially fund new membership materials. A Message from the President Bob Sacco president@orpa.net The NRA Clubs and Associations committee has also been most helpful with the generation of new members through their E- blasts to Ohio NRA members. To those new members let me extend a heartfelt welcome. The ORPA, like any association, is only as strong as its membership. When the ORPA is asked to comment or testify on an issue the first thing some folk want to know is who are you speaking for and while we might not be the largest state association we do command respect and are striving to increase our membership. ORPA junior programs are nationally recognized and are the future of our various disciplines. One of the major funding sources for these programs is our annual sweepstakes. ORPA Vice President of Operations, Alan Joseph, has done a remarkable job the last couple of years and is again heading up our sweepstakes this year. Alliance Rifle Club is again donating an AR platform and our great supporters at Ohio Ordnance are once again providing a VZ2000 rifle and two cases of ammunition as prizes. Custom knife maker Gary Smith is again offering one of his beautiful handmade knives for the prize pool. The Civilian Marksmanship Program will again provide ORPA with an M1 Garand rifle. The tickets and information on the sweepstakes will be out soon. In excess of $15,000 after expenses were raised in Thank you to all who participated. Take the time and take a chance to help our junior programs. Again all proceeds after expenses are divided equally among our junior shooting disciplines. These young men and women are the future of our sport. Please help us help them by supporting the sweepstakes. Gunsmoke February-March 2014 IMPORTANT NOTICE! Ohio Prone & 3P One Day Regionals Changed Please note a date and location change for the 2014 Ohio Prone and Three Position Regionals usually held on Petrarca Range at Camp Perry each year. This year, Petrarca Range will not be available to us for a full weekend. In order to conduct both matches on the same weekend we have secured the use of the range at Vienna Fish and Game Club in Vienna, Ohio. The matches will be conducted on Saturday, June 21 for the Three Position Regional and Sunday, June 22 for the Prone Regional. The match will be held on the covered 25 point outdoor range which has both 50 yd and 100 yd ranges. The club has plenty of parking and indoor handicap accessible rest rooms. If attendance is high enough, the match will be run in two relays, alternating relay 1 prone then relay 2 prone and so forth. This match is also the State Outdoor Smallbore Championship for Prone and Three Position and names the State Adult and Junior Teams to represent Ohio at the 2014 National Matches. New programs with the date changes will be sent out soon. Any questions, please Russ Evans at: jr_smallbore@orpa.net or phone at

4 4 Gunsmoke February-March ORPA Sweepstakes Best Ever By Alan Joseph, VP Operations Our 2013 Sweepstakes, which raises funds to support ORPA Junior Shooting Programs, was our best to date. We raised over $15,000 to evenly distribute to our four Junior Shooting disciplines. These funds help defray many of the expenses incurred, such as entry fees, travel and ammunition. Our Junior coaches and leaders have effectively utilized these resources in keeping Ohio Junior shooters competitive with the other teams from across the nation. ORPA would like to recognize and thank our junior shooters, coaches and team volunteers for their hard work in conducting successful programs. Our four disciplines are Smallbore Rifle, Highpower Rifle, Pistol and Air Gun (which includes Air Rifle and Air Pistol). I would like to thank our 2013 prize donors. We had wonderful prizes to offer due to their generosity. Please support them whenever possible. Ohio Ordnance Works, Inc., Chardon, Ohio. Donation of a VZ 2000 Rifle and 2 cases of ammunition. 6 6 As a person listens to conversations about the vast amount of time and money spent on load development, practice, matches, reloading, rifles, replacement barrels, scopes and all the associated equipment, one must come to the conclusion that all of this is being done to excel at this sport. When I first started deer hunting I was given some advice that I have never forgotten. I should get the best rifle and scope I could get, so that I did not have to worry about my rifle or scope, only my shooting abilities. The same idea holds true for shooting at paper targets regardless of what type of firearm is used. The key is to get the best equipment one can mustard and the rest is up to the shooters ability. The only way to improve scores after that is time on the range. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. This also applies to a team s success. A lesson on team performance can be learned from the smallbore junior team. The ORPA smallbore team members shoot together all year long, whether in practice or at a match. We also find this strategy in the winning teams at Camp Perry, regardless if they are smallbore, highpower, civilian or military. ORPA State Team Development for the Nationals by Ed Shank, Long Range Team Coordinator My intention this year is to develop a Long Range Team that practices and fires matches prior to going to the Nationals at Camp Perry. Historically, teams are formed by either a group of four shooters submitting applications together and requesting to shoot on the same team or by the team coordinator (me) finding the best mix based on past and recent performance and NRA classification. Typically, they learn the night before the match at Camp Perry with whom they will be shooting. It is safe to say that a good team needs to be developed and spend time on the range as a team, with each other, discussing load development, rifles, scopes and most of all practicing with and coaching each other. My proposal for team development is to select the best four Ohio long range shooters and group them on one team, which will be designated as The Gold Team. There could be a Gold team for any or all of the rifle divisions, (service, any, match, Palma). This team could be either chosen before or after the Nationals, depending on shooter s commitment to be on the 2014 or 2015 team. The2014 long range team application will provide the appropriate boxes to check if you are interested on being on the 2014 or 2015 team. I also have not forgotten that not everyone has a High Master classification. In this case, if there are four shooters in a given division that show an interest for forming a state team, I would extend the same opportunity. Since applications have historically been sent out in June, and in order to get some practices in prior to the 2014 Nationals, we need to start putting this together as soon as possible, I will or make contact by telephone or in person as many of the past team members to see if they are interested. If you do not get an from me, please contact me through the ORPA website ( Since the shooting season is just around the corner, I will be ing applications within the next few weeks and will require the applications to be returned by March 14, For 2014, if there is a preorganized team and a team member has checked the box requesting interest on being on the 2014 Gold Team. The shooter s record and classification would be investigated to see if they would qualify. A call (from Gunsmoke February-March 2014 me) to the team captain of the pre-organized team would be made to notify them and get their input that one of the team members is a candidate for the Gold Team. At this point, an alternate would be chosen to backfill the Gold Team member. This would insure that the pre-organized team members have four shooters and a firing point on the line. Conversely, the Gold Team members have the option after the Nationals to renew for the following year given they can still qualify for the Gold Team. As far as practices, as of this time, there are two one thousand yard ranges at which we can shoot and for which I am a member of both. One is at Malvern, Ohio and the second is at the Oak Ridge Sportsman Association in Oak Ridge Tennessee. Once the team(s) is formed, we can discuss what arrangements we should make based on where and when. In order for this idea to work, there must be a strong commitment from each team member to make as many practices as possible. In summary, the objective is to provide the shooters their best opportunity at placing as high in the standings as they can get.

12 20 Gunsmoke February-March Page Cowboy Corner 2014: A Good Year for Ohio Cowboy Action Shooting Here it is, 2014 already! WOW! As exciting as 2013 was, 2014 shapes up to be a banner year for cowboy action shooting. Besides the monthly club matches, again this year we are so fortunate to have four major shoots in Ohio. The first major event on the Cowboy calendar will be Smoke in the Woods, a two-day match starting April 26, 2014 hosted by the Big Iron Rangers at the Middletown Sportsman s Club in Middletown, Ohio. They will also be hosting the Guns of August 12-stage four-day match that begins on August 7 th. This year marks the 17th anniversary of Guns of August. If you have never had an opportunity to attend a major SASS Regional competition, this one is right here in your back yard. In conjunction with the main match will be numerous side matches and special events to include cowboy skeet and trap, a black powder mini match and a Texas Hold em event to support the SASS Scholarship. Please check out their web site for additional information. goa.htm. And I m proud to announce that the Miami Valley Cowboys will be hosting the SASS Ohio State Championship; Shootout at Hard Times, May 23 to May 25, 2014 on the grounds of the Piqua Fish and Game range. They are also holding the second Ohio State Wild Bunch match. This two-day Wild Bunch will be Oct Of note, they are also hosting monthly Wild Bunch matches on March 30 and June 29. The June date will be a two day combined match with the Stonelick Regulators club who shoot on the 28th. To keep up to speed, just check out their web site for updates. If you have not been able to compete in or attend one of these shoots in the past, it would be a great treat to become involved. You will see shooters from all over the country converge. Sign up early as a lot of these competitions have a ceiling and when full, they are full. I hope everyone gets out and tries something new this year, a new costume, new leather, new gun (hopefully Santa was good to you this year), a shoot at a different club, or a new classification. For me, I m going to try B-Western. Yep, it should be fun running around in a buscadero rig and fancy boots with western spurs. GREENE COUNTY COWBOYS DECEMBER 1, 2013 This brings me to my final point. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT VERSION 19, THE 2014 SASS HANDBOOK! 15 Gunsmoke February-March Akron Rifle Ends First Half of Season with a Win Down two power players, the Zips team braved the chilly snow storm and slid on in to Terre Haute, Indiana on Dec. 7 to go up against the Fighting Engineers of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology. After the ice melted, the Zips (4581) emerged victorious over Rose (4385). Missing from this match was freshman hotshot Zach Strohl who was unable to travel due to the flu, and sophomore Matt Chezem. Chezem is a member of the US Olympic National Development team and was proudly representing the USA and Akron at the international Winter Air Gun Games held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Despite their absence, the Akron squad still managed to put up some nice numbers. Senior Victoria Brown and sophomore Tim Hopkins took control of the match with Hopkins earning top gun in smallbore and Brown taking top gun in air rifle. I am very proud of both Brown and Hopkins as they really put a lot of effort into leading this team every day, said coach Newt Engle, If anyone deserves to be on the top of the winner s board, it is these two. As the traveling team was in Indiana, the remainder of the Zips squad fired a home match in Akron. Despite being under the weather, freshman Zach Strohl still managed to tie his personal best air rifle score (587) while teammate sophomore Megan Pemberton shattered her personal best (577) air rifle with a very impressive 583. Freshman Connor O Mara also set a new high smallbore mark of 560. All in all, a pretty good weekend for the Akron team. Coming back from break early, Team Akron will train hard and prepare for the first match of Part II of the season which will take place January 26 th at the Palmyra Invitational rifle tournament in Palmyra Pennsylvania.
