4 4 Thank You for all Years of ORPA Service - Barb Smith & Alan Joseph by ORPA Past President Patrick D. Cherry I would like to congratulate Gwen Bailey on being the new ORPA Highpower Director and to reflect back a few years to around 1983 or 84. ORPA. was a different place. Highpower was a good old boys club that issued out the team rifles on friendship more so than the need of a qualified shooter. Some were even issued to non-competitive shooters and one was stolen and/or sold. In those days the rifles were on loan from the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) and a lost or stolen rifle was a major problem. ORPA s pistol and smallbore divisions had to support the highpower division. Things were so bad that I was elected President. Barb Smith Barb and Larry Smith had been running the Pickaway County Farmers and Sportsmen s highpower matches at Camp Sherman. Those matches were ran better than the ORPA matches at the time and were drawing shooters from coast to coast. When I took over as president it was obvious that many changes had to be made and the first was to appoint a new Highpower Director and I knew no one better than Barb Smith to do Alan Joseph the job. The job was to organize the people at hand to accomplish the mission. And Barb is an organizer. She agreed to take it for five years at the most. Looking back over the many years of outstanding service she and her staff gave and the level the program handles at its peak I think ORPA owes Barb and her staff a debt that can only be repaid by carrying the program to an even higher level. I hope the members give Gwen Bailey as much support as they have given Barb. Another dedicated ORPA officer to whom ORPA members owe a lot is Alan Joseph. When I took the presidency, Alan was the Membership Director and Newsletter Editor. The membership was run from a card file and Al had just taken over the newsletter from Penny Orth - another dedicated member from the past. The newsletter was typed and ran on a mimeograph machine. We got Al the first ORPA computer for the membership. Alan (like many of us) tends to overload himself. Much to his dismay I took the newsletter and gave it to someone with more time. I again apologize for that Al. All in all, Alan has done an outstanding job for not only ORPA but the shooting community in general. He has always been my personal hero as he is to those that shot for him at Xavier University and many who know what he has accomplished behind the scenes. Like us on Facebook! 7 7 Akron Alumni Best the Current Zips at First Annual Alumni Match by Newt Engle, Akron Rifle Coach For those who didn t know. We recently held an Akron Alumni match where former UA Champions had a chance to come see the new facilities, tour the campus, and go head to head with our team. We had a GREAT time! One of the reasons participation in our sport drops a little after college is time. New jobs (we hope), families and all kinds of real world grown up responsibilities all take time. Thus, shooting gets pushed to the back burner. But our dedicated alumni, made the time. Many shot in the match, and some came to cheer for those shooting. I saw a whole lot of hand shaking, hugging and telling of stories (some of them actually true ). Even some alumni parents showed up to do what they have been doing for years. I have to admit, I was a little surprised at the turnout, and actually a little moved by the amount of fond memories which everyone brought with them. That s enough. I don t want to get too wishy-washy. And, oh yes, we shot a match! Putting my three current team members against the top four alumni turned out to be a mistake on my part. As both the Air Rifle and Smallbore Rifle Alumni teams spanked the current team. Guess I will have to rethink this for next year. This match idea was spawned by alumni Mike Naylon. Thanks a ton Mike! And who did all the work? None other than my four-year student athlete and now two-year assistant coach, Sarah Benjamin. Thank you Sarah! I don t say that near enough.
