4 4 Results of the 2015 Team Long Range National Champions By Edward Shank, Long Range Team Coordinator As always, Camp Perry proved itself to be full of surprises that challenged even the best of shooters. This year the rain held out for the long range championships, but the absence of rain brought temperatures in the 90 s with sweltering humidity levels. Normally windy days are welcomed with hot weather, but in the case of shooting at targets 1000 yards away, it is not. This year, shooters encountered 20 mph sustained winds with gust up to 30 mph, making the challenge of putting a hole in the X-ring 1000 yards away even more difficult. To make matters even more interesting, Camp Perry this year was the host for not only the National Championships, but also the World Championships. Among the countries represented in the World Championships were countries such as South Africa, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and of course the USA. The United States military was in full force from all of the armed forces in both the individual and team events. This mix of personnel brought the best of the best shooters from around the world which added to the competitive nature of the National Championships. Among this mix were a number of Ohio civilian shooters firing numerous types of rifles such as the service rifle, Palma rifle and match rifle by utilizing either iron sights or using scopes. In the team matches for the National Championship, the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association had four teams of shooters who overcame the hurdles throw at them by the weather by excelling in the individual matches and then again in the Herrick and Roumanian 1000 yard team matches and two teams firing in the Palma Team match. During the World Fullbore Championships, ORPA again had four teams representing Ohio sponsored by the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association. In general, the ORPA teams performance in the National Championships landed them in the top three of their division and classification while in the World Championships ORPA had two teams that placed in 9th and 10th place. Good shooting to all. The breakdown of the four ORPA teams were three ORPA match rifle teams and one service rifle team for both the Roumanian and Herrick team matches. ORPA also had two teams firing in the Palma Team match. One Palma Rifle team and one service rifle team. The National Championships consists of the first day having two 1000 yard matches, the second and third day has one 1000 yard match and the fourth, which is the last day, has the Palma individual match. The first three days of shooting is entered into depending on what type of rifle and sights you use. This rifle can be a number of combinations that include a match rifle of any caliber, iron or rifle scope and or the service rifle. The Canadian Cup Trophy is the same deal, except that the first day of the National Championships which fires the two 1000 yard matches are not included in your total point aggregate. The team 1000 yard matches are fired in the afternoon of the second and third day. The Palma Team Match is fired on the last day or the fifth day of the National Championships. The first of three ORPA match rifle teams was ORPA Gold. ORPA Gold comprised of Charles Rowe (team captain & firing member), along with Andrew Wesel, Tim Kerns and Matt Kellgreen, all did well in the individual matches and brought highly tuned skills to the National Championship team matches. Since competing from the start of the CMP matches, Charles Rowe brought to the team matches this year, a Bronze medal, third overall in the midrange championship, and a 1st Master and 5th overall in the Remington 1000 yard trophy match. Matt Kellgreen, Drew Wesel and Tim Kerns, and Eric Eilberg (firing member on ORPA Bronze) all placed in the top 100 of the High Master class. Not a bad finish given the company they were in had shooters from around the world including some notable names such as Nancy Tompkins, Brandon Greene, Norman Houle, David Tubb, Michelle Gallenger, John Whidden and Ohio s own. Dan Altman who placed 15th overall in the High Master award category of the National Championships. With the talents of Chuck Rowe, Tim Kerns, Drew Wesel and Matt Kellgreen, ORPA Gold took 2nd place in the Herrick Team match of the combined local and state association High Master category. If you think X s don t count, ORPA Gold needed only one point more from their team score of X to have beaten the first place

5 5 team s score of X. Fine job of shooting indeed. The next day of shooting landed ORPA Gold in 1st. place firing the Roumanian Team match in the High Master State Association category. ORPA Silver comprised of Kim Rowe (team captain & firing member), Tom Colston, Tom Bonner, and Dennis Zavatsky. Continuing the determination they had to excel from the Individual matches of the National Championships to the team matches was Kim Rowe placing 16th Master in the leech Cup, Tom Colston placing in 2nd place Expert for the National Championships and 1st place Expert in the Canadian Cup Trophy with Tom Bonner placing in 3rd place Expert in the National Championships. Both Tom Colston and Tom Bonner received awards for their placement in the National Championships as well as placing 1st and 3rd Expert of the Sierra Trophy match respectively. Dennis Zavatsky placing 17th Master in the Leech cup and 11th Master in the Wimbledon Cup match. ORPA Silver Rifle team in the State Association and local club category took 3rd place in the Herrick Team match and again repeated for a 3rd. place in the Roumanian Team Match. The third match rifle team was ORPA Bronze with four shooters and one coach, all from Lima. Included in this team was Joe Bakies as team captain and firing member, James Schieltz, Dave Myers placing 10th Master in the Leech Cup and Eric Eilberg(top 100 of National Championships) with Jack Baker as the coach calling the wind. In the Herrick match ORPA Bronze placed 4th in the State Association, Master category. Things seemed to come together on the second day of shooting in the Roumanian team match, ORPA Bronze brought home a First place in the Master class of the State Association category. The ORPA service rifle team had Ed Shank as (team captain & firing member), Ed Agle, Bob Johnson and Doug Lab. Ed Agle and Ed Shank and in the Master class of the National Championship-Tomkins Trophy Match. Ed Agle placed 7th and Ed Shank placed 12th. in the list of service rifle shooters in the Individual matches of the National Championships. Ed Agle and Ed Shank placed 1st and 2nd overall in the senior category as well as 1st and 2nd civilian shooters with the service rifle among the list of military personnel shooting the service rifle. Bob Johnson took first place Grand Senior in the Expert class with the service rifle. Doug Lab with his AR-10, made in 11th place of the Master class of the Canadian Cup Trophy. The ORPA Service Rifle team placed 2nd in the Roumanian team match of the Master class of the combined military, local club and state association categories. Their score was good enough to beat USMC Gold and the US Army Reserve team, but not enough to keep the AMU team out of first place. The firing line of service rifles had a mix of AR-10s and M1A/M14s. The AMU and Army reserve both went for the AR-10, while the US Marine Corp. still used the tried and true M14. The ORPA Gold Service Rifle team had two M1As with Doug Lab firing his AR10 and then a blast from the past was Bob Johnson firing and doing quite well, considering the winds, was his veritable AR-15. That s not a typo. It really was an AR-15. In the Herrick Match, ORPA Service Rifle team placed third. The Palma Team match was represented by two ORPA teams. One Palma Rifle team and one Service Rifle team. ORPA Bronze firing Palma rifles had four firing members. These members were Tom Colston, Tom Bonner, Matt Kellgreen and Drew Wesel as team captain and firing member. The ORPA Service Rifle team firing members were Doug Lab, Ed Agle, Bob Johnson and Ed Shank as captain and also a firing member. After some time speaking and investigating the Palma Team event with the Match Director Sherri Judd and the National Match Coordinator, Dennis Willing, Dennis Willing told me that the unofficial results showed ORPA Service Gold behind the AMU and the US Army reserve service rifle teams. Per Dennis Willing, since there were only three service rifle teams that fired the match and five teams were needed as a minimum for a division, the three service rifle team scores were added in among the other Palma Rifle team scores. In the World Full bore Championship matches, ORPA had two teams firing in Director s match, match 638. The teams were ORPA Gold and ORPA Silver. In the NRA President s match, match 687, ORPA also had two teams, ORPA Gold and OPRA Silver. The Directors match, match 638 was fired at 300,600, 900 and 1000 yards with a team of five team members. The NRA President s match, match 687, was also fired at 300,600, 900 and 1000

6 6 yards, but had a team of four team members. ORPA would not had one team in the World Full Bore Championships if it were not for the efforts of Charles and Kim Rowe who organized and ran a full bore match at the Alliance Rifle club rifle range at Malvern, Ohio earlier this year. Chuck and Kim also got the match certified with the NRA, made sure enough rounds were fired in the match for the competitors to get a Full Bore classification card. Another round of thanks goes to the Alliance Rifle Club Executive Board and the Ohio-Penn league at Malvern, Ohio who provided the range time for the match. Again, very much appreciated and a grateful thankyou to all. ORPA s first of two teams firing in the Director s match was ORPA Gold had five team members in which the team captain was Eric Eilberg who was also a firing team member; the other firing team members were Tim Kerns, Dan Altman, Johnathan Zimmerman and Terry Paul. ORPA Gold placed in 10th place overall. ORPA s second team firing in the Director s match was ORPA Silver having also five team members in which the team captain was Charles Rowe who was also a firing team member, the other firing team members were Drew Wesel, Kimberly Rowe, Tom Colston and Tom Bonner. All had also shot on ORPA teams during this year s National Team Championships. ORPA Silver placed in 9th place overall. The NRA President s match, match 687, had two ORPA teams. ORPA Gold and ORPA Silver. Firing team members for ORPA Gold were Tim Kerns, Dan Altman, Terry Paul and Eric Eilberg who was a firing member and also team captain. ORPA Gold finished in 11th. place among the cast of international hard holders.orpa Silver firing in the NRA Presidents match had Chuck Rowe as the team captain and a firing member with Kimberly Rowe, Tom Colston and Tom Bonner as the other three firing members. ORPA Silver placed in 23rd place among the teams representing South Africa, New Zealand and Australia to name a few.the World full bore team matches can be truly defined as the World team championships proven by the international mix of teams on the firing line. It also is important to note and with pride that next to each of the ORPA team members name on the official scoring record were three letters, USA, (United States of America). Congratulations on a great job everyone for representing ORPA, the State of Ohio and the United States of America. I would like to thank everyone who used vacation days, spent monies that could have been used elsewhere and most importantly the time away from home and family to put forward the effort to shoot on an ORPA team. Hope to see you next year. I also want to thank The Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association for sponsoring and paying half of the match fees. Especially this year, as the total match fees doubled due to the World Championships. As an Organization, the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association placed well. Keep in mind, although you do not think you are doing your best, others on the same firing line are having the same problems and shooting in the same conditions. Also take note that the competitors on the line had a mix of international shooters that for the most part were in the upper percentage bracket of the High Master class. These international teams that arrived at Camp Perry brought exceptional shooters which raised the bar of excellence to yet another level. This year is in the history books and we should already be planning for next year. As for any of you hearing rumors about scopes on service rifles, one of the conversations I had with Dennis Willing was that on November 7th, The NRA and the CMP will have a vote as to whether or not they will allow the use of scopes on service rifles. The restriction will be no greater than a four(4) power scope and at the moment it appears to be limited to just across the course matches. No conversation at this time is there any thought for scopes on long range 1000 yard service rifle shooting. We should be able to find out the results of this vote via the article Dennis Willing writes in USA Shooting this winter. That s all for now and thank you for your interest and involvement in this great sport. 9 Cowboy Corner BY COL. FLETCH O DUBOIS III (ORPA Cowboy Director Bill Knall) Guns of August Mideast Regional Championship August 5-8, 2015 Well folks, this year s Guns of August continued in the fine tradition and lived up to its billing as the premier Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) event of the year and one of the biggest events in Ohio. For newcomers, the Guns of August is the Regional Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) competition which has been held the second week of August every year for the past 17 years. Contestants come from around the country - Michigan, California and Florida to name a few and even a contingent of our Canadian neighbors as well. Your ORPA was well represented with 18 shooters in attendance. Unfortunately this old buckaroo wasn t able to attend due to health issues but I ll give you a rundown best I can recollect. If you are not a SASS member or haven t seen a cowboy match, CAS is a multi-faceted shooting sport where contestants compete with firearms like those used in the taming of the Old West, or seen in the B Western movies of the 50 s and 60 s. But now shot with single action revolvers, pistol caliber lever action rifles, and old time shotguns. The competition is a timed sport in which shooters compete on a course of different shooting stages which are timed separately. Each missed target is a five second penalty and there are additional penalties if you fail to follow course of fire instructions or do something unsafe. Unlike some competitions where times are simply added at the end and the fastest time wins, at SASS recognized events, a system called Rank Scoring is used for each stage for your place of finish. The fastest shooter gets one rank point; the second gets two and so on. Rank points are totaled at the end of the match and the shooter with the lowest number of rank points wins. Over 150 shooters amassed at the Middletown Sportsman Club in Middletown Ohio for this event. It kicked off on the 5th of August with early registration, a Range Officer shooting school put on by none other than our very own Wilbur Rexroat. Day two was all the side matches which ranged from the SASS Scholarship Challenge that went on all day, to Pocket pistol (single and double action ) Derringer, rifle, pistol (duelist, GF & traditional) Shotgun (pump, lever, double & hammer double). There was also a Ladies side match, a black powder side match and long range events. The Quigley Pail event - I assume by now that everyone has seen the Tom Selleck movie Quigley Down Under and remembers the scene where our hero has to prove his shooting skill by shooting a pail at a very long distance. Buffalo single shot, Long range lever action pistol caliber and of course the big bore Long range single shot were challenging but fun. I d say that the Wild Bunch mini match and Warm Up mini matches were well attended as well. Wild Bunch is supposed to resemble the old Sam Peckenpaugh cowboy classic, The Wild Bunch competitors use a.45 ACP model 1911 pistol, a Model 97 or Model 12 Winchester shotgun and a lever action rifle of.40 caliber or larger. It s great fun for those who like shooting the classics and we had a lot of competitors dress in old Rough Rider costumes too. For all details on the Wild Bunch check out the following web site: RO/SASSWBHandbook_OCTOBER_2010_final.pdf Days 3 and 4 were the main competition days and they were action packed! Lassiter, the range officer, had

10 9 12 stages set up and competitors shot 6 stages each day. They were challenging, they were fun and they were quick! After the smoke had cleared and the last bullet went down range, the winners emerged. Lead Ringer was the top men's shooter and Sage Chick, The Ohio State champion, was again the top ladies shooter. The goal of every competitor is to shoot the match clean---no misses and ORPA members Fancy Free Spirit, and Wilbur Rexroat achieved this honor! ORPA Competitors included: 7 Mile Tom (finished 3rd in Senior Duelist category) Blastin Brad (finished 4th in the Cowboy category!) C.J. (finished 2nd in Cowgirl category) Clementine Valentine (finished 1st in the Ladies Gunfighter category!) Fancy Free Spirit (finished 1st in the Ladies Frontier Cartridge category!) Lead Slinger Lee (finished 4th in Young Gun Boys category!) Loco Leadslinger (finished 2nd in Classic Cowboy category!) 11 10 The Guns of August also helps out in many other ways. It raises money for the SASS Scholarship Foundation as well as money for the local Boy Scout Troop D. During the banquet, there was a costume contest and folks were attired in duds reminiscent of that period. All the side match awards as well as main match awards were given out. The crowd was entertained by the cowboy songs of Frederick Jackson Turner. I hear all had a mighty fine time! The future of our CAS shooting sport lies with the youngsters, and there are several categories for our younger shooters - there is the Buckaroo and Buckerette for those age 13 and under and Young Guns age I highly encourage folk to get these youngsters involved. Sage Chick, the State and Regional Champion, was once a buckerette!
