2 2 A Message from the President Bob Sacco president@orpa.net My first task as I write today is to thank our friends at the National Rifle Association and especially Elizabeth Bush with Clubs and Associations at the NRA headquarters. The recent E- blast sent to Ohio NRA members from NRA headquarters has prompted many of you to join the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association. The strength of any organization lies in its membership and I wish to also thank all of our new members. Many of you joined through our improved website. Its new look and interactivity is due to the long hours put in by Trustee Doug Utsch as web administrator. Doug is a new Trustee and a long time block officer at the Pistol Nationals at Perry. He is also splitting time with us and holding down the Presidency at Miami Rifle and Pistol Club. The new members have all been processed and credentials sent out by Alan Joseph, our Vice President of Operations and Membership Director, he has handled the increased work load in his usual way with speed and tack. One other accolade is due our Gunsmoke Editor Trustee Rachel Schofield. She put the E-blast together and coordinated its transmission. In this Gunsmoke or under separate cover for those of you receiving electronic Gunsmokes you will find sweepstakes tickets to support our junior shooting programs. Again this year thanks to VPO Alan Joseph we have amazing prizes to be awarded at our annual meeting with the winners picking by order of the draw. The proceeds from the sweepstakes go to each of our junior programs divided equally. Junior Highpower Rifle, Smallbore rifle, Air rifle and Pistol each receive an equal share of the ticket sales. Please take the time to fill out your sweepstakes tickets and return them with your payment to support the future of ORPA and the shooting sports through our outstanding junior teams. There are proposals being floated by Ohio Legislators to mirror misguided Federal restrictions on law abiding citizens. ORPA will oppose any such infringement on our fundamental rights under the Ohio and U.S. Constitutions. I would like to personally thank the Governor for signing legislation improving Ohio CCW law and allowing concealed carry in the statehouse garages. Some Ohio legislators feel that social problems can be solved by restricting inanimate objects rather than addressing the real issues of mental health and school security. Ohio has issued more concealed carry permits than ever before and we don t have chaos running in the streets, we have more and more responsible armed citizens exercising their right to self defense. The ORPA will continue to fight to preserve these rights The ORPA is governed by its trustees and it has been said the association is always on the lookout for interested members to step up and be one of those trustees. Your interest and expertise can help the ORPA do the best possible job for its members. Thank you, R. Sacco, President ORPA Youth Rifle & Pistol Shoot July 27-28, 9 am For ages On Saturday, youngsters who have never handled a firearm will take a class on safe firearms handling, then will shoot at both paper and reactive targets. The scholarship program is named for a longtime junior club coach from the Erie County Conservation Club and ORPA trustee. Interested students should be an ORPA individual member and competitor for at least the last two years. They will need to furnish three letters of recommendation, including one from their coach or instructor. Each student will also supply a high school transcript to demonstrate a Grade Point Average of at least 3.0 during their junior and senior years. Applicants should provide a typed statement describing their post-high school goals. This statement can also include detail of the student s other activities, including school extra-curricular, work experience, and community service. An application is available at or by sending a request to the address listed after this article. Please note that scholarship winners do not need to compete on a collegiate team. ORPA is interested in rewarding junior members who share an appreciation for the shooting sports and can positively represent the organization. Applicants must submit the necessary information to the Scholarship Committee by Sept. 1. Please contact the Committee if you have any questions. Donna J. The Deals children honor their parents by continuing to fund the program. 9 Accurizing the Front Sight on the M-1 Garand Rifle Roy Baumgardner, ORPA Member and Author of Accurizing the M-1 Garand 9 The Garand is a good rifle. If you work it down to 1½ to 2 MOA, it can hold the ring of the 200 yard SR Target used in NRA and government matches. Some will shoot under 2 MOA. What I will do here is pass along the little tips and bits of accurizing information that all of the armorers, shooters and gunsmiths passed on to me. These people are the kindest, finest, people in the world. Without them we would be lost. These tips will arguably be in the order in which they will do the most good. They are low in cost if you do them yourself, but they will not take the place of sending your rifle to a top gunsmith and having him go all over it and fit a top of the line barrel. It is important to understanding. First, is the front sight. Since the Garand was originally designed to be used with corrosive ammunition, the gas cylinder was made a loose fit on the barrel so that the soldier could remove it for cleaning. It also had to be interchangeable with all the others out there. Since the rifle would not repeat if the gas system was full of rust and reliability was of more importance than accuracy, the splines on the barrel are a very generous fit on the gas cylinder. Unfortunately, Garand put the front sight on the top of the gas cylinder. So if you grab most M-1s by the front sight, you can wiggle them quite a bit. This of course is not conductive to good target accuracy. There are a couple of ways to solve this. Most of the people I talked to just remove the gas cylinder, turn a ball peen hammer upside down, set the round peening end in the slots of the barrel and give it a couple of taps with the hammer. They do this in two or three places on each of the three splines where the gas cylinder will locate. They then tap the gas cylinder back into place on the rifle. This does indeed work and makes for a very snug sight. It was an indoor match with 50 yard slow fire and 25 yard turning target sustained fire. Had to get up early due to the time change. I really expected a poor showing. The day turned out unseasonably warm and clear. There was a lot of serious talent at the match. Master class had six or seven plus Jim Lenardson was in the high master class. I was on third relay so that I could shoot with some other friends. I was shooting a marvel conversion mounted atop an old Springfield Armory Mil spec frame. I didn t do anything special - just what I normally do for league or any other match. Shot a 94 first slow fire target then went on to set several personal best. Next slow was a 99 then a 97 on the NMC went on to clean the rest of the NMC. When all was tallied up, shot a way personal best x. Very pleased, I went on to do acceptable in the CF and 45 portion of the match. I finished with a 2606 which was my first score over the 2600 benchmark. Woo Hoo! Long term goal achieved! While I am thrilled with my score, there was a slight let down because I know several points were lost due to silly mistakes. My first trip to Camp Perry was I set several goals as suggested by the AMU s Sgt. Wilson. I m supposed to celebrate those goals. He is lucky I couldn t find his phone number or I would have called him. I m saying this because if I can do it, anyone who is willing to put effort into their own goals can do it! The goals I set in 2007: Make Master - Make distinguished pistol - Make distinguished revolver - Make Presidents Break as of yesterday Make distinguished rifle - working on it. What are future goals? Dan Pauley Break 2620 with optics. Break 2600 with iron sights Be on the civilian pistol team that wins the Oglethorpe Trophy at the NTT. State indoor match is coming up next month. See you on the firing line!

18 18 Ohio State University Rifle Coach Ryan Tanoue with Amanda Luoma who placed eighth in the nation at the smallbore competition. Ohio State University was the host of the 2013 NCAA rifle championships on March 8 & 9. In front of a near capacity crowd, the field of 48 competitors from 12 different universities with students from four countries delighted the crowd with a nail-biter of a championship. At the end of the smallbore competition which took place on day one of the championship, the top six ranked teams finished within nine points of each other. However, defending champion, Texas Christian University finished on top, Ohio Hosts NCAA Rifle Competition and is Represented Well March 8 & 9 - The Ohio State University Range ORPA Collegiate Director Newt Engle one slim point ahead of a two way tie for second between Alaska and West Virginia. The Ohio State University did not field a team at this year s championship, but OSU team member and Ohio native Amanda Luoma did secure an individual invitation. Out of all the smallbore competitors present, Luoma s 580 out of a possible 600 did earn her a trip to the smallbore finals competition. After the high pressure completion of the 10 shots fired in the finals, Luoma finished in 8th place. This is a very prestigious Ohio native Abbey Stanec with her mom Whitney Painting. Stanec, representing Ole Miss placed 36th in smallbore. accomplishment ranking Luoma as one of the top collegiate smallbore athletes in the USA. Another Ohio native, Abbey Stanec, was invited as an individual representing her school of Ole Miss. Stanec s 571 landed her in the 36th position. On day 2, which is air rifle day, West Virginia University lit up the boards with a record breaking performance. WVU pulled ahead in the standings by winning the air rifle championship and the coveted overall National Championship for This is the 15th national championship for the mountaineers. Our Ohio contingent didn t make it into the finals on air rifle day but did finish with a respectable 20th place for Stanec and 41st for Luoma. Overall Ohio demonstrated a strong support for the NCAA Rifle Championships by packing the stands with an amazing amount of fans, cheering for their favorite teams. And our two girls did Ohio proud.

19 19 Akron Rifle Mid Atlantic Conference Champion! Ohio State University Range - Feb , 2013 The Akron Rifle team traveled to Ohio State University to give its last best effort to ending the season on a positive note. The effort paid off with many of the Zips sharpshooters shooting season and career personal best scores. At the end of the day the Zips finished second in the Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference, (WIRC) but did manage to capture the Mid Atlantic Conference (MAC) smallbore rifle championship title. Akron and Navy have been going toe to toe all season and both teams knew this championship was going to be a close one. The expectations were correct as when the scores came in, Akron finished only four points ahead of the Midshipmen, 2279 for Akron and 2275 for Navy out of a possible 2300 points. Navy is always a very strong team and a worthy opponent, states coach Newt Engle, but our team put their eye behind the sights and did what they had been training to do. This is the first time the Zips have ever earned the MAC championship two years in a row. Also competing in the WIRC the Akron squad went into this race in second place just a few points behind OSU, and only a few points ahead of Morehead. Even though both OSU and Morehead fired season high scores, the Zips zeroed in and also put enough shots in the middle to also earn a season high score at the championship. Even though the strong finish did not land the Zips in first place, they did hold on to second and had some stellar individual performances. In smallbore, freshman Alan Agnew reset his career high mark with an outstanding 580 out of 600 points. This landed him in second place at the championship match, only one point behind the match winner, Amanda Luoma from OSU who fired a 581. Akron put up some of the best air rifle scores of the season lead by junior Victoria Brown who also rewrote her career best mark with a first-rate 391 out of a possible 400. This gave Brown second overall immediately behind OSU s Amanda Luoma (396). Rounding out the top four for Akron was freshman Crystal Reynolds (389, new career best), Alan Agnew (387) and senior David Brummond (385). The team was really hot with the air rifles at this match, and what a great time to do it! states coach Engle. Athletes on the firing line at Ohio State University s range. Freshman Alan Agnew

20 NRA 3-P Smallbore Sectional Indoor Championship, 2013 NRA Int l Air Rifle Sectional Indoor Championship, 2013 NRA Int l Smallbore Sectional Indoor Championship Feb The Ohio State University Range - Sponsored by the OSU Rifle Booster Club, ORPA & NRA Match Director Rick Sarver, ORPA Smallbore Chair At our match, we met a lot of new shooters in the junior category who lacked an NRA classification. The results of this match may help them towards a classification but in the meantime they were designation as Master Unclassified. Our shooters this year again posted scores that will represent Ohio well once the NRA announces the final results. In the Open International Smallbore Match, former United States Air Force cadet and rifle team shooter Mike Seery posted a strong 1148 to take the gold. We are glad to see him back in Ohio while he furthers his education at Wright- Patterson Air Force Base. With a strong score of 1137, Michael Steinel placed second. Junior Michael Geisecke, formerly from Pennsylvania, posted a 1123 to acquire the bronze. The highly contested NRA International Air Rifle Sectional gained a shooter whom I had not previously had the opportunity to meet but who I m sure to see at the top of future scoreboards. Junior, Ian Foos posted an excellent 579 tally in the 60 standing air rifle match with 96s, 97s and 98s and at all his stages making for a consistently strong targets. The gold will make a nice presentation on his shelf and I m sure many more similar awards will come his way. Junior Michael Steinel again won silver with a 566 aggregate and established himself as a dual threat bound to catch the attention of college coaches. A pattern seemed to appear as junior Michael Geisecke rounded out the medal recipients with a 562 bronze medal score. Greg Drown is one of several Ohio shooters who makes his presence known on the scoreboard wherever he shoots and this year was no exception. Greg posted an 1142 in the NRA Metric Position event that allows scope shooting with the smallbore rifle. His gold medal score was followed by Garald Wise s 1128 silver medal posting. Paul Gideon earned the bronze medal with his 1087 score and he also received the senior Old Fogey certificate. Glad to see 53 competitors turn out for the three events. Come back next year and let s make it an even bigger turnout! 22 22 When a match consists of a possible 4,800 points and each time an athlete pulls the trigger the shot is worth 10 points, winning or losing a match by 17 points is a very close margin. Unfortunately for the Zips, they fell on the short end of the scale when their score of 4566 was a slim 17 points behind the 4583 posted by The Ohio State University. OSU definitely left the door open for us to move ahead, but we just couldn t pull it off at this match, stated head coach Newt Engle. However, in the smallbore division the Zips finished strong by posting a team score of 2271 out of the possible And talk about close! This was only two slim points ahead of the scarlet and grey score of Leading Akron to the Ohio State Beats Akron in Close Smallbore Match, Feb. 2, 2013 smallbore victory was senior David Brummond who shattered his personal best record by firing an amazing 578 out of 600. This performance landed Brummond in second place overall just three points behind top gun winner OSU s Amanda Luoma (581). It had to be the senior effect, facetiously states a grinning coach Engle, I doubt if the fact this was David s last home match or the fact he has been working his tail off at practice had anything to do with this brilliant performance. Shooting slightly below their average is all Akron had to do to give OSU the come from behind victory in air rifle. Three competitors made it into the elusive 580 s at this match which landed junior Victoria Brown (581) in a solid second place right between two OSU sharpshooters. OSU s Greg Hagar (582) took top gun honors and Amanda Luoma (580) slipped into third. As in most air rifle matches scores are accumulated in sets of 10 shots worth a total of 100 points each set. Zips senior Nicole Dietrich achieved excellence by being the only competitor at the match to post a perfect 100 with the air rifle. This is a great way for a senior to finish at the last home match of a wonderful college career, states Coach Engle. With a weekend off to get ready, the Akron squad will travel to the Ohio State University of Saturday the 16 to compete in the NCAA qualifier match. The results of this match will be added to the average of the top three regular season matches to determine final national rankings and which eight teams get invited to the NCAA national championships in March. Statistically, we are out of the race for the top 8, but with a good performance we can definitely move up the rankings from our current spot at #17, states coach Engle, Since we came back early from break the team has been focused on peaking at the qualifier. Akron will have its chance at the OSU range starting at 2pm on Feb 16.
