WYLIE RANGE In 1875 the Ohio State University shooting facilities were at what is now the Ohio State Fair Grounds. Since that time the shooting range has been in several locations on campus. In 1966 the present range in Converse Hall was dedicated by President Novice G. Fawcett in honor of Lt. Hugh W. Wylie. Lt. Wylie, of Circleville, Ohio, was a graduate of OSU and was a member of the Army ROTC. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division in North Africa, Italy and Holland. On Sept. 17, 1944, Lt. Wylie was killed near Arnheim, Holland in the battle that inspired the book and movie A Bridge Too Far. The Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range is a 20 point range set for 50 foot and 10 meter shooting with respective 22 caliber ammunition and precision air guns. An elevator was placed in service early in 2000 to serve handicapped students and competitive shooters. 2

4 MEET THE COACHES HEAD COACH JAMES SWEENEY 16th season, Ohio State, 1957 James Sweeney has served as head coach of the Ohio State pistol team for 16 years, coaching the squad to six NRA Collegiate National Championship titles and coaching seven student-athletes to 25 NRA Collegiate Individual Championships. Throughout his time with the pistol team, Sweeney has coached one Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year (Teresa Meyer), two Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor recipients (Laura Murray and Jessica Marshall), 38 All-Americans and 45 Academic All-Big Ten honorees. Sweeney led the pistol team to its first NRA Collegiate National Championship in his first year as head coach, also guiding his student-athletes to national titles in free pistol, standard pistol, sport pistol and women s air pistol that same year. Under Sweeney s guidance, the women s pistol team has captured four NRA National Championships (2000, 2004, 2005 and 2009). In 2003, 2011 and 2014, Sweeney was named the NRA Distinguished Coach of the Year. Sweeney s Ohio State coaching contributions date back to , when he served as an assistant coach with the men s gymnastics program. He left Ohio State to serve as the head coach for men s gymnastics at Washington State ( ) before returning to Columbus as the head coach for the men s gymnastics program ( ) and as the head coach and advisor for the spirit program ( ). He was honored as the NCAA Mid-East Men s Gymnastics Coach of the Year in Sweeney has been actively involved in the shooting community for over 30 years, both as an active competitor and as the Director of the State of Ohio International Pistol Championships as well as of leagues in air gun, action pistol and bullseye. His contributions to society do not end in the shooting community, as he served as a foster parent for 16 years, working with children of various ages until they were adopted or could return to their homes. Sweeney graduated from Ohio State in 1957 with a bachelor s degree in physical education, continuing his studies at his alma mater and earning his master s degree in physical education (curriculum design) in In 1965, Sweeney graduated from Ohio State with a doctorate degree in physical education (educational psychology). While studying at Ohio State, Sweeney also competed on the freshman football team ( ) under head coach Woody Hayes before joining the men s gymnastics team ( ) after rehabilitating from a football injury. He was a finalist on still rings at the 1956 NCAA Championships. Over the years since his graduation from Ohio State, Sweeney has written seven publications ( ), served as an assistant professor at Washington State ( ), and served as an instructor ( ), associate professor ( ), assistant professor ( ) and associate professor emeritus (1994-Present) at Ohio State in addition to his responsibilities as head coach of the pistol team. ASSISTANT COACH DONNA KNISLEY 16th season, Milligan College, 1984 Assistant coach Donna Knisley brings 19 years of active competitive and teaching experience to the Ohio State pistol team. She earned a B.S. in Health and Physical Education at Milligan College in Knisley is a retiree from the Ohio State College of Medicine and devotes her services full time to the pistol team. She also rings the Orton Hall Chimes for most of the special occasions on campus which has included the spring graduation on the oval. She has taught rifle and pistol marksmanship in numerous clinics and camps from elementary through adult levels. In her first year of formal college coaching, she was instrumental in helping Ohio State capture the 2000 National Collegiate Championships. Her own record of competitive achievements speaks well for her with many accomplishments in rifle as well as winning the 1993 State of Ohio championship in air pistol. She became certified as an NRA Advanced Pistol Coach in Knisley s specialty is instilling good fundamental skills in new shooters and developing effective mental attitudes for maximum performance. 4

She graduated having won two individual national championships and was a member of the 2000 National Collegiate Championship Pistol Team. Murray was awarded the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor as the top female athlete at The Ohio State University for , and was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in Jessica Marshall was honored with the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor in Her career saw her win six national titles, three each in 2003 and 04 (women s air and sport pistol and two-gun aggregate). She helped Ohio State to win the 2004 women s national title at the NRA National Collegiate Championships. Marshall was a 12-time All-American and was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
