5 The First Tucson Gold Cup Where Champions Train On Sept. 22, 1985, I sponsored the first Tucson Gold Cup at the Holiday Inn/ Holidome. At that time, most tournaments in the state were sanctioned by the Arizona Referees Association (ARA), a state organization mainly run by Kempo and American Free-Style black belts. However, KoSho Karate was a member of the United States Karate Association (USKA), an organization founded by Grandmaster Robert Trias in The international rules of the USKA were far superior to the state rules of the ARA and because of this, I did not choose to have the Gold Cup sanctioned by the ARA. Infuriated by this action, the ARA chairman and the board of directors voted to boycott the tournament. By doing this, they hoped to cause the Gold Cup to fail. Unfortunately for them, for five years, I and thirty-five of my students had competed at every tournament in the state. KoSho Karate had quite a reputation, everywhere, and KoSho Karate students were ranked among the very best competitors. I was the number one ranked heavyweight black belt for five years (and was number one in kata and weapons, as well). New black belts, Sensei McCaster and Rafael Guerrero, were the number one lightweight and number one middleweight competitors, respectively, for three years. On the morning of the tournament, when the ARA expected no one but USKA members to come, they were shocked when 395 competitors and more than eight hundred spectators showed up. These people came from Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, Texas, and North Carolina. Other karate tournaments usually had 150, primarily local, competitors. The crowd at the Gold Cup exceeded even my expectations. In fact, the portion of the ballroom that KoSho had rented was not large enough to hold the people. A second section and the stage in front of the waterfall were also opened and were quickly filed. It could have been a real disaster. But, thanks to the help of the KoSho students, their family members, and several USKA black belts, the tournament went extremely well. The Tucson Gold Cup was the talk of the town for a long time.
