2 Sumo SUMO Sumo originated in Japan is a competitive contact sport where two wrestlers attempt to force one another out of a circular ring (dohyo) or to touch the ground with anything other than the soles of the feet. Today many Sumo wrestlers come from other nations than Japan practicing as professional, leading Sumo as a famous Sport in the world. The ring (dohyo) is 7.27m square and 60cm in height and is constructed of a special kind of clay. The hard surface is covered with a thin layer of sand. The bout is confined to an inner circle a little over 4.5m in diameter. Over the dohyo suspended from the ceiling by cables is a roof resembling a Shinto shrine with four giant tassels hanging from each corner to signify the seasons of the year. 3 Judo JUDO Judo is a Japanese martial art based upon the ancient techniques of jujutsu. Dr. Jigoro Kano, President of the University of Education in Tokyo, developed Judo in Dr. Kano, who had studied jujutsu in his youth, incorporated the best of these ancient techniques into the new art of Judo. Today People practice Judo for many different reasons such as exercise, self-defense, a social activity. Judo promotes flexibility, develops speed and co-ordination, strengthens the cardiovascular system, and promotes balanced muscular development. Judo ranks are awarded for developing proficiency in certain techniques and for regular practice. All judo player begin as white belts. Over time, in general they may earn a yellow belt, green belt, three degrees of brown belt, and finally a black belt. Judo as a sport at first became an Olympic sport for men in the 1964 at Tokyo and 1988 for women at Seoul. The International Judo Federation (IJF) is the world wide governing body of Judo. 5 Karate KARATE Karate is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa in Japan from indigenous fighting methods and Chinese martial art of Kenpo. The World Karate Federation (WKF) is a recognized governing body by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as being responsible for Karate competition. WKF has developed common rules governing all styles of Karate, however, there are other organizations respect their own competitions in their karate styles as well. As WKF accepts only one organization (may be an union of different styles) per country, The World Union of Karate-do Organizations (WUKO) offers different styles and federations to join, without having to compromise their Karate styles. The WUKO accepts more than one federation or association per country. Overall WKF Karate competition has two disciplines: sparring (Kumite) and forms (Kata). Competitors may enter either as individuals or as part of a team. Evaluation for Kata is performed by a panel of judges, whereas Kumite is judged by a head referee, usually with assistant referees at the side of the sparring area. Kumite matches are typically divided by weight, age, gender, and experience. Today, styles of Karate are diverse in the world. Each style has different rule requiring different items and competition looks. The major styles recognized by WKF are Shotokan-ryu, Shito-ryu, Goju-ryu, and Wado-ryu, while WUKO recognizes the same styles as WKF and additional of Shorin-ryu, Uechi-ryu, Kyukushinkai, and Budokan. 8 Kendo KENDO Kendo is the Japanese martial art of sword-fighting. Kendo is a physically and mentally challenging activity that combines strong martial arts values with sporting-like physical elements. Kendo is practiced wearing traditional styled clothing and protective armor, and using one or two bamboo swords as weapons. Therefore, Kendo may be seen as a Japanese style of fencing. There are estimates saying about eight million people world-wide practice kendo. 9 Naginata NAGINATA 薙刀 Naginata is the Japanese martial art of pole weapon fighting. It was traditionally practiced in Japan by members of the samurai class. Today, it has become famous as a women martial art of sports in Japan. However, outside Japan as in Europe, Australia, North and South America, Naginata is practiced both for men and women. 10 Wrestling WRESTLING Wrestling is part of the martial arts. Today there are a wide range of styles with varying rules. Particular wrestling styles, have particular rules. Also, one can distinguish between traditional and non-traditonal styles of wrestling, and wrestling techniques found in military hand-to-hand combat and self-defense systems. The International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) is an international wrestling federation that holds events around the world. It is the governing body of international amateur wrestling. Wrestling disciplines defined by FILA as International wrestling category are Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling, Grappling, and Sambo.
