3 From The President s Desk ANNUAL REPORT 2015 is drawing to a close, and TAC has once again had a busy year. Our membership is up, and our events are popular. The season started off with Ice Racing, and though turnouts were reasonable, costs are increasing, so clubs are barely breaking even. We are hoping that 2016 brings more reasonable costs so we can return to profitable series. Thanks to VP Paul for organizing, and Treasurer Rita for doing registration - as well as all the club helpers that made the trek to MInden to help out! The Ontario Time Attack season got under way with schools in April & May followed by our busiest season in years, with events at the usual places plus Calabogie and Toronto Motorsport Park (at Cayuga). Director and TAC member Kelly Ball oversaw the season, with the added services of track rescue. TAC worked with the Oshawa Motorsport Club to hold the school, as well as the single day at Cayuga, and the closing weekend at Grand Bend. When we plan the series, we add up all planned costs, and divide by the expected number of attendees. Unfortunately, with costs rising, our competitor numbers are dropping. The series looks to lose close to $10,000 this season, so it is being seriously scaled back for Brooke Jacobs put on the Discover Ontario rally in June, and numbers were up over previous years. This was our only rally event this year, so it was great to see it so successful! We held our 2 contract rallies - the Guru Nanak and the Zonta. Both are great fundraisers, and help offset some of our operating costs. We get great feedback from the Guru folks, and they always include us in their event reports to the charities that they support. We can expect more of the same in 2016! Our big social event - the gourmet barbecue at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (Mosport) - was lightly attended this year. The timing couldn t have been worse, as it took place on the opening day of Toronto s Pan Am Games. Mosport reported that numbers were down that weekend, but were still glad to see us. Speaking of the Pan Am Games, they kept me busy all last season - from November to September. I missed most weekends over the summer, as those were the busiest days, managing technology at the venues from Welland to Mississauga. I had an absolute blast, and learned a tonne about Cisco networking products and TV coverage of major games events! The only real disaster took place on the last OTA weekend at Grand Bend. I was competing in Sue s 2008 BMW 335xi, and at just the wrong time, one of the brake lines came apart. The pedal went to the floor, and the run-off area was littered with campers and trailers. I ran out of room at the fence separating the track from the drag strip. The car hit an I-beam fence post, then snapped around through the fence. 2 air bags deployed, and the body was extensively damaged. The car was sold for parts, and the garage discovered that the brake hose had pulled out of the crimped metal fitting where it was attached to the calliper. Sue is now shopping for a new car, but swears it will never be driven on a track. Aside from one slight mishap, I m looking forward to a great 2016 season! Rob

9 2015 TREASURER S REPORT In this issue of Fifth Gear, I have provided a year-end summary. Of course, since our club s financial year-end doesn t actually occur until Oct 31, some of the items on the attached report are estimates; but waiting until after Halloween makes it hard to get anything into the newsletter before the AGM, November 18 th. Any changes to the numbers from this report will be provided as soon as possible after the true year-end. Overall, this is a positive report. We look like we re going to end the year with a slight increase over last year ($350). It s not exactly a big buffer, but when you consider that ever since 2010 we ve lost ground, that $350 looks pretty good! Some of the more salient changes include: We did not purchase any new TAC gear this year. While everyone loves the TAC shirts and hats, they are an expensive form of advertising, which we just couldn t afford this year. Maybe if our balance stays on its upward trend now, we can look at some new stuff in the future; but for 2015, we saved perhaps $1000 by not having any. We are spending a bit less on Fifth Gear now that many members are preferring the fast delivery (and full colour) of the electronic version. That really helps cut our printing and postage costs there. The TAC executive has decided that, going forward, the default delivery of Fifth Gear to members will be electronic. If a member explicitly prefers to receive the paper version, we may have to look at a slight membership surcharge for that. The cost of the year-end awards banquet keeps getting higher. You ve probably noticed yourself that dining out at a restaurant is more expensive every time. Of course we certainly don t want to cancel this important social event: we need an occasion to recognize all TAC members who shine in their autosport of choice over the year; and even noncompeting members enjoy the night out and the chance to chat with other drivers (and maybe win some fun door prizes!). This year is the 60 th anniversary of our club, and we are inviting past winners of the Most Active Member trophy to join us. Sadly, we aren t able to afford the full cost of all these wonderful people s meals, so the executive has reluctantly decided to sell tickets for the banquet, rather than cover it for everyone. We ll still subsidize the dinner, so the ticket price won t be the full price from the venue; hopefully that will be a reasonable compromise for all. Our Ice Race and the Discover Ontario Rally both came slightly into the black this year, as opposed to 2014 when both events cost us money. This can be simply attributed to getting more entries, in the case of the rally; and in the case of the ice race, we were purely fortunate that our weekend didn t encounter another disastrous last-minute weather cancellation like before. However, compared to the average Ice Races of years past, the relatively small $523 pro_it from this event is not a good sign. Costs of everything has gone way up: the Kinsmen levies and the HST on it; the price of worker accommodations and food keeps rising; while the money brought in from entry fees is not keeping pace. At this time, the Ice Race Organizing Clubs are discussing with the Minden Kin Club regarding ways that the costs can be more equitably shared. We certainly don t think that cutting our coverage of worker expenses is an option, as some other organizing clubs are suggesting. An event needs volunteers, and they need to be compensated for their time somehow. But obviously, the Ice Race either needs to take in more entry fees, or pay out less somewhere:

10

11 there is too much work put in by everyone, both behind the scenes as well as during our weekend, to only gain $523. Time will shortly tell where we are all headed in this regard. Apart from these items, most of our _inances look pretty much the same as other years. I am happy to conclude by saying that TAC is in no imminent monetary peril. Let s all hope that 2016 continues this trend! See you at the AGM. Rita Moore, Treasurer 2015 COMPETITION REPORT TAC organized several events this year. Starting with an ice race in Minden in January. That was the _irst event of the season requiring more work on the _irst day than usual. The entry was less than hoped for. We ran three time attack events, one combined with a school, entries were lower for these as well. Fee height may be part of the reason for this. Next year there will be fewer events so will see how that will affect entries. On the rally side, we again ran the DOCR rally in June,a regional event, with a higher entry than in previous years. We also ran two contract rallies, these are run for outside groups for a fee that provide revenue for our club for subsidizing our social events. On a different note, we are coming to the year end and we provide awards to our members for their performance in various events. The awards are for the best club member performance in Race driver, Ice race driver, Performance rally driver, Performance rally codriver, Navigational rally driver, Navigational rally navigator, Time attack driver, Auto slalom driver. If you competed in any of these events would you send me your results so we could see if you are eligible for an award. My is dietmar.s@gmail.com Dietmar Seelenmayer
