1 PRESORTED STANDARD U.S. Postage Paid Permit No. 95 Valley City, ND ECRWSS 19 11, 20. n a J, Fri. Farmers Union Holds Annual State Convention in Bismarck Where else can one go to listen to educational speakers and individuals who will be sworn into the 116th Congress, see a brandnew chopper, a children s book about family farms and also watch the highest honor possible in the Farmer s Union Youth program be awarded to youths? Why, the annual Farmer s Union state convention in Bismarck, of course. Speakers included Dr. Adnan Akyuz, the state climatologist, and Dr. Frayne Olson, an NDSU crop economist. Elections at this December 14 convention were held for various positions, including president, vice president, and state board of directors. Mark Watne of Velva was re-elected as president, and South Heart resident Bob Kuylen was re-elected to the office of vice president. New members on the state board of directors are Ryan Taylor, from Towner, for district two, and Michelle Ziesch of Pettibone, for district six. In district four, Gladstone resident Shane Sickler was re-elected. Dis- trict two encompasses Bottineau, McHenry, Pierce, Rolette, and Ward counties, whereas district four includes Adams, Billings, Bowman, Dunn, Golden Valley, Hettinger, McKenzie, Slope, and Stark counties. Finally, district six covers Dickey, Eddy, Foster, Kidder, LaMoure, Logan, McIntosh, Stutsman, and Wells counties. Attending members were able to receive a sneak peek of a lean, E30-running machine. The chopper was custom-built motorcycle that is quite the operation; Not only are unnecessary pieces removed to reduce weight in what The Chopper Builder s Handbook refers to as a Bobber, but a step beyond even those drastic innovations is what characterizes the chopper: Cutting apart and welding back together the bike s very frame. Paul Teutul, Jr. of Paul Jr. Designs created and built in Orange County, New York, a Family Farms chopper, which will be featured on a 2019 episode in a Discovery Channel TV show American Chopper. President reelect Watne stated that American Choppers Consumer education about the value of family farm agriculture is a standing priority for our organization. As farmers, we understand that America s family farm system of food production is the best in the world. By Paul Jr. s handiwork with the chopper, they hope to convey an understanding of family farming s value to the consumers. Until the unveiling on the Discovery Channel, the world will be devoid where videos or photos are concerned of built a custom motorcycle displayed at the this machine. With larger operations with bigger herds, declining hay production and improved corn yields, silage is a growing trend. The two-hour program will start at 10:30 a.m. Presenters will cover several key aspects of silage, including growing a good corn crop, harvesting and storing corn silage, feeding silage to cattle and the economics of corn silage production. This information will be helpful for new producers or those interested in adding silage to their feeding program, says Paige Brummund, an NDSU Extension agent in Ward County. Presenters will include Joel Ransom, Extension agronomist; Karl Hoppe, Extension livestock systems specialist at NDSU s Carrington Research Extension Center; Dhuyvetter; Interest in corn silage as feed for cattle is Brummund; and Lynsey at the NCREC. mation, contact BrumAberle, Farm Business The meeting is free of mund at Management instructor charge. 2 Please Fly Zone Page 2 - Friday, January 11, 2019 (RIAS) Mark Askelson sees this please fly zone as an opportunity: To me, it s about our vision as a university and a research institution to be a leader in autonomous system. Drones are quickly finding a presence in farming and ranching operations, both of which can benefit from their use. As farms and ranches increase in size, they too must increase in manpower. However, with an unmanned system that can be programmed to complete certain tasks, manpower may be an area in agricultural costs that could see a corresponding costwise cut. This addition to the UND campus could The signs that prohibit certain activities abound like no-wake zones, Slow-Children Present, and (insert various animals) XING signs. However, UND researchers propose a new type of sign, to follow a new type of activity: Campus and Ray Richards Golf Course may become, if this proposal follows through, a region where drones (unmanned aircraft systems or UAS) would have the space to interact with the public. Students at UND may use this as a training range for practice in operating UAS. 3 Where s the Beef? Most informational events around the region discuss farming and the new, upcoming challenges it faces. However, the Dakotas also have a lively production of livestock, to which the South Dakota State University Extension crew gives a nod in their Northern States Beef Conference. Having taken place in Watertown on December 12th and 13th, veterinarians came from all over the Midwest to discuss these issues with ranchers. SD State Public Health Veterinarian Russ Daly discussed the important role of Friday, January 11, Page 3 vaccines in young beef cattle s health and to the east in Iowa, State Extension Beef Veterinarian Grant Dewell addressed the mother s role in calf immunity. Coming from NDSU as the Extension Livestock Stewardship Specialist and Veterinarian, Gerald Stokka focused on the health impacts of working the calves. The meeting also covered subjects including feedlot management and the potential found therein, which SDSU Extension Beef Feedlot Management Associate Warren Rusche emphasized. Feeding more cattle in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota offers tremendous potential to add value to commodity feed grain and enhance rural economies, he said. All in all, this Northern States Beef Conference focused with a laser intensity on beef health, which is a topic of concern to producers everywhere. SDSU Extension Beef Specialist Julie Walker hopes that the practical information shared by the guest speakers can be put to use on their beef operations Field to Fork Webinar Schedule Set The NDSU Extension Webinar Series Starts February 6 North Dakota State University Extension again will host the Field to Fork webinar series starting in February Experts from across the region will provide information about growing, processing and serving specialty-crop fruits and vegetables safely. Producers have many options and feeds for supplementing protein to inadequate rations. One of the easiest is to include a higher-protein hay such as alfalfa with lower-protein grass and silage. Byproduct feeds are another option. They have concentrated protein levels and can be limit-fed to supply added protein. Often, protein supplied at.3 to.5 pound per day fixes deficiencies. The appropriate feeding rate depends on the protein level in the supplemental feed and what s needed to meet the cow s requirement, Dhuyvetter explains. For example, a cow receiving a silage and straw ration having a 6.5 percent crude protein level will need.5 pound of added protein to bring the ration up to 8 percent crude protein. This can be met with 1.3 pounds of canola meal at 39 percent crude protein or 1.8 Shopper1/4 pounds of dried distill- ers grains at 28 percent crude protein. 5 NASCAR THIS WEEK Friday, January 11, Page 5 CUP COUNTDOWN Charlotte s Roval delivered road-course excitement QUESTIONS & AT T I T U D E Compelling questions... and maybe a few actual answers There will be familiar colors, though a different number, on the Truex car this coming season. [AP FILE] Why didn t Bass just stick with the 78 team? Bass Pro Shops was reportedly fine with Martin Truex Jr., the No. 78 team and Barney Visser s Furniture Row Racing. But Visser couldn t find sponsorship funding to cover the hole created when the team s other major benefactor 5-hour Energy pulled the plug on its NASCAR marketing plans. That shortfall, along with a reported increase in fees to remain affiliated with Joe Gibbs Racing, led to Visser s exit. No one to blame? Ryan Blaney (12) drives past the wrecked cars of Jimmie Johnson (48) and Martin Truex Jr. (78) to win the inaugural Roval race at Charlotte. [AP/CHUCK BURTON] By Godwin Kelly godwin.kelly@news-jrnl.com This is the last of a five-part series on the top five races during the 2018 NASCAR season. This week, No. 1. C harlotte Motor Speedway wanted to make its fall race unpredictable and interesting, so it created the Roval, which combines the 1.5-mile quad-oval with an infield road course. The course measured 2.28 miles, with several twists and turns, including elevation changes on the infield course. After several test days, which found cars in the wall and tire barriers and generally torn up, drivers were wringing their hands leading up to the race, which would finalize the Round of 12 playoff field. Between lead changes and caution periods and a series of dramatic moments, including a last-lap doozy of a finish, the Bank of America Roval 400 emerged from the 2018 season as the best Cup Series race of the year. First, you have to start at the end. Jimmie Johnson saw an opportunity to snap a 58-race losing streak, and went for it. It cost him a shot at an eighth NASCAR championship and allowed Ryan Blaney to steal a surprise victory. Had Johnson just settled for second, he would have advanced in the playoffs CUP SERIES SCHEDULE Feb. 10: Clash at Daytona Feb. 14: 150-mile qualifying races for Daytona 500 Feb. 17: Daytona 500 Feb. 24: Folds of Honor 500 at Atlanta March 3: Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas March 10: TicketGuardian 500 at Phoenix March 17: Auto Club 400 at Fontana March 24: STP 500 at Martinsville March 31: O Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Texas Instead of playing it safe, Johnson wrecked Martin Truex Jr. while attempting a pass in the final turn and wound up in a three-way tie for the final transfer position into the second round of the playoffs. The seven-time NASCAR champion was eliminated from the postseason on the tiebreaker. Blaney, who was running a distant third, split the two idled cars and took the checkered flag, leaving Johnson in the playoff wake. I didn t expect that, Blaney said. Sometimes it is better to have a little bit of luck on your side. You hate to see two guys take each other out, especially two of the best cars all day. But Johnson said he knew exactly what he was doing when he tried to pass Truex for the victory. I knew where I was on the math, Johnson said. I didn t think that I was going to crash or spin trying to overtake him like I did. I thought I was making a calculated move and giving myself the chance to win, and unfortunately it didn t turn out that way. The unusual layout and unfamiliarity made it a treacherous circuit for the 16-driver playoff field because it was an elimination race for four of the contenders. The race was clean until the end, which was marked by two different wrecks among the leaders and a red-flag period of almost 15 minutes. He earned enough points to advance to the next round of the playoffs. I couldn t even drive my car it was so destroyed, said Larson. Brad Keselowski was hoping to win for the fourth time in five races until he misjudged the entry into the first turn on a restart with six laps remaining. It triggered a multicar crash that collected Larson, who had led 47 laps. Keselowski s race ended after leading 29 laps. Kyle Busch was also in the accident and ridiculed his fellow drivers for their error. All of us are just stupid and don t know where to brake, said Busch, whose older brother Kurt Busch started from the pole. We all just drove off into a 90-degree wall because I guess we didn t have anything better to do. Because of the Roval s success it became the Cup Series third road course people are talking about adding more road courses and short tracks to the schedule in future seasons. The roar from the fans was all I needed to know that was the moment that everybody will remember for a long time, said Marcus Smith, president of Speedway Motorsports Inc., which owns the Charlotte track. I think it was certainly more than I had expected and hoped for in terms of the excitement for our fans. After all, it s the only game in town during January. Huh? Bass Pro Shops has followed Truex to the Gibbs team? GODSPEAK: Bass Pro Shops sponsors different teams, here and there, but to Truex s credit, he does hunt and fish. KEN S CALL: Funny how these things work, isn t it? Shenanigans or opportunity? Nothing personal, as they say, just business. Tune in online at online.com/daytonamotormouths What s going on with the Xfinity Series? GODSPEAK: Chip Ganassi Racing and Roush Fenway Racing are out. The doors are open for new owners to move in and take command. Who s in? Probably not. Cynics will suggest Gibbs raised his affiliation price in an effort to eventually land Truex and Bass, knowing Visser s void after 5-hour Energy s departure. But it was probably nothing more than businessmen making the types of decisions that need to be made in order to remain in business whether it s building race cars or selling furniture. Who s left in the Xfinity Series? Junior Earnhardt s JR Motorsports is still heavily invested, as is Joe Gibbs, but the 2019 roster has thinned with the recently announced pullouts by team owners Chip Ganassi and Jack Roush. Check out the handy-dandy 2019 team chart on Jayski.com and count the question marks. It s not a good sign, but it s also a potential opportunity for newcomers to get a guaranteed starting spot for some Saturday shows. It s not cheap, however. Mark Martin turns 60 this week. Really? GODSPEAK: Even with a slight height and reach advantage, I always thought he could whip me in a minute. Congrats on your birthday, old buddy! KEN S CALL: From the time he went to the buzz cut, that s a guy who never aged over the decades, so I m sure he could suit up today and make the playoff cut. Martin Truex Jr. will continue wearing the Bass logo for most of the upcoming season. [AP FILE]

6 Central Dakota Ag Day Page 6 - Friday, January 11, 2019 Extension personnel from NDSU held a workshop on December 13th at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center. The event covered a wide variety of topics, including the issues on everybody s plate like soybean trade and marketing strategies. Also on the table were soil health, livestock marketing, cover crops, and cattle feed concerns. Crop-wise, the discussion focused on outlooks of specialty crops, budget comparisons, diseases like wheat ergot and Goss s wilt in corn, and control of white mold in dry beans. Ranchers perked their ears up at NDSU s calculation of purchasing replacement heifer profitability, as well as the use of Sorghum Sudangrass for fall grazing or haying. Sorghum Sudangrass is a hybrid be- tween Sorghum bicolor and a variety of the same species, sudanese. This hybrid species is a great way to add organic matter to what the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Project considers worn-out soils. As tall-stature (attaining heights of five to a staggering twelve feet), fast-growing, and heatloving plants, this hybrid is a good choice to follow legume cover crops. Its parents are important cereal crops throughout the world, feeding livestock and humans alike in silage and grains. Quite notable during the day was the focus of agriculture; the invasive weed Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) has been discovered in North Dakota. Its close relative, Redroot Pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus), is a common garden weed. Palmer Amaranth is its bigger, badder cousin: it possesses aggressive growth habits at a rate of two to three inches per day in optimal conditions and can reach heights that can top Shaqille O Neal at 6-8 feet tall. This weed is a green, seed-producing nightmare to farmers, especially because it is prone to herbicide resistance and is very R-selected, producing seeds numbered to a million per plant. A Purdue University Extension Weed Specialist comments that It s the only weed I ve seen that can drive a farmer out of business. However, there are methods of prevention and control that are continually being refined to prevent further spread of this dread weed, and NDSU s agricultural extension page has many tips on how to clean combines, ATVs, tillage and planting equipment to do just that: stop the spread of Palmer Amaranth. Farmers, take heart in the realization that humanity s crop-growers have encountered weeds of similar dark natures before and have come out on top. agents; Dave Franzen, NDSU Extension soil specialist; Greg Endres, NDSU Extension cropping systems specialist; and Hans Kandel, NDSU Extension agronomist. Topics that will be covered include: Factors to consider in selecting soybean fields, updated fertilizer recommendations, what factors contribute to iron deficiency chlorosis and questions about foliar application of micro nutrients Soybean variety selection; the latest infor- mation on various production issues, such as the importance of good root nodulation and water management; and the results of a four-year soybean production survey 2019 disease outlook, including an update on soybean cyst nematodes, as well as results of field research conducted in 2018 and information on how to manage soybean diseases Intensive soybean management, no-till and strip-till versus con- ventional-till methods, planting dates, plant populations and row spacing, special soybean inputs on the market and weed management issues The North Dakota Soybean Council is sponsoring the Getting it Right in Soybean Production programs and lunch. Soybean producers will have an opportunity to learn about the latest research findings and how to manage soybeans at one of North Dakota State University Extension s three Getting it Right in Soybean Production meetings scheduled for Park River, Lisbon and Hope, N.D., in January. Agricultural production systems are very complex and new research information is generated annually, says Hans Kandel, NDSU Extension agronomist. With marketing challenges, tight margins and unknown future weather conditions, it is important for producers to gain as much production knowledge as possible.
