PRESIDENT S REPORT This time of the year many of our members go travelling; usually to warmer climates as things get a bit chilly in Victoria and it even gets a bit hard to spend much time in the garage. There is not a lot going on as far as events are concerned as there is always the risk of an event being rained out or at least having to put up with cold conditions. But it did not deter anyone at the last MSCA event at Sandown where we had a great day and a good turnout of club members and competitors. Helped a lot by a good weather day as well of course. I m sure Rod will have more to say about it in his report, while below we have published the most up-to-date competition championship scores. By now our Eastern run to Dixons Creek Café will have taken place hopefully in good conditions as well. On Queen s Birthday weekend I went to Ballarat to stay with some friends and was able to visit Nisbet Marshall and see some of the excellent work he is doing at his business, Callanish Restorations outside Creswick. I have been admiring Healeys that Nisbet has done work on for a few years now and if you are looking for someone to do some chassis and bodywork for you it would pay you to talk to Nisbet. We are spoilt for choice in Victoria with so many people doing such a high standard of work on Austin Healeys and when you visit people like Nisbet you can see why so many people from interstate bring their cars to Victoria to have their work done. Also visited an ex Healey owner from very early days of the club, Ian Virgo who unfortunately had a stroke a few years ago and now resides in a nursing home as his wife Elka can no longer look after him. I have visited him before and his passion for Austin Healeys remains as strong as ever. Ian was an excellent mechanic and worked on a lot of cars over the years. The last project he completed was the building of a Clubman which he was proudly able to show me and it was a credit to him the job he has done on it. Even though he was confined to a wheelchair and unable to drive it, he made sure that his son got it out and started it up for me. How sad that he has never actually been able to get in it. And on my way home I made my first visit to where Steve Pike is now in Bacchus Marsh and just caught up with him before he was leaving for another of his sojourns to the United States. The quality of the work Steve does is also amazing and I was able to see some of the latest projects he is completing. He is building a 100/4 for himself, which will have a 100S engine and he hopes to break 2 minutes at Phillip Island in it when it is completed. There are so many good restorations being done at present it really is exciting and gives you great confidence that our Austin Healeys are going from strength to strength. Cheers, Terry AHOC COMPETITION CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS SCORES AT 30th JUNE, 2015 COMPETITION CHAMPIONSHIP best 4 events, points score out of 4000 maximum, no. of events in brackets ASSOCIATE CHAMPIONSHIP best 3 events, points score out of 3000 maximum, no. of events in brackets COMPETITION CHAMPIONSHIP for Healeys ASSOCIATE CHAMPIONSHIP for non-healeys 1 Shane O Brien (100/4) 1907 (2w) 1 Phillip Aitken 1869 (2) 2 Bill Vaughan (Sprite) 1903 (2) (HQ Holden/Coad Vauxhall) 3 Rod Vogt (Sprite) 1807 (2) 2 Peter Williams (Brabham) 1741 (2) 4 Geoff Leake (100/4) 1803 (2) 3 Iain McPherson (Alfa special) 1728 (2) 5 Tony Rogers (3000) 1761 (2) 4 Hamish MacLennan (MGB) 1697 (2) 6 Damian Moloney (100/4) 1639 (2) 5 Peter Kaiser (Mini) 954 (1) 7 Leon O Brien (100/4) 1624 (2) 6 Tony Rogers (Porsche 911) 918 (1) 8 Steve Pike (100 & 3000) 1509 (2) 7 Geoff McInnes (Riley Spcl) 891 (1) 9 David Kelly (100/4) 1257 (2) 8 Russ Baker (PRB Clubman) 884 (1) 10 Peter Kaiser (Sprite) 965 (1) 9 David Kelly (Triumph TR8) 861 (1) 11 Brian Duffy (3000) 871 (1) 10 Graeme Marks (Mac Healey) 798 (1) 12 John Goodall (100/6) 865 (1) 11 Rod Vogt (MGB) 767 (1) 13 Rob Raverty (3000) 834 (1) 12 Shane O Brien (Lister Jaguar) 706 (1) 14 Andis Salins (100/6) 558 (1) Hundreds & Thousands - August

Interesting letter in last month s RACV Royalauto magazine from a member pointing out that on Club plates your car is not registered you have been given a permit to use the car on the public roads under certain conditions. How does this affect your insurance? Do you actually have third party insurance as you do with normal registration? HEALEY TORQUE Joe Jarick has been in Europe for a few weeks and was asked by the Healey Museum to present the annual Gerry Coker award to Bruno Verstraete from Switzerald for his replica 100/4 Bonneville car that was built by Steve Pike a year or two ago. Bruno uses the car regularly and has taken the car to Bonneville to recreate its taking part there in the 1950s. Home made stick-on vinyl numberplates are in the news again with a bumperless Healey supposedly picking up a fine for not having the Vicroads pressed metal plate fitted. The fine is $149 or even $295 depending on Mr Plod s interpretation. And rumours abound about a Police blitz on checking CPS logbooks having been correctly filled out. Probably worth assuming that the rumour is true as the fine for driving without having a correctly filled out logbook is $738. Among the many members overseas at present are Steve and Helen Pike. They have gone to the States (Steve s second home) with Chris Little from NSW. They have included the Healey Rendezvous event, which had over 100 Healeys and was held at the Alderbrook Resort in Union, Washington. Soon to join the club is Trevor Madden from Ballarat who bought the ex-phil Hart BN2 from South Australia. Nisbet Marshall was doing the car for Phil when he unfortunately passed away. So Nisbet sold the car for Phil s widow to Trevor. Apparently the car is a cracker and has a lot of the 100M modifications on it. We hope to get the car down to a meeting night later in the year. Donald Healey s birthday was 3 July and an interesting documentary turned up on YouTube to celebrate. If you search Austin Healey documentary you will get a good story about how he started off in the auto business mainly told by son Brian tracing the early Riley engined cars right through until the BJ8s and a bit about their racing history. Donald was an accomplished driver with successes in rallies and speed trials. Steve and Helen were in Canada recently for the Calgary Stampede, which is a very popular rodeo style event and were unfortunate to have their road transport stolen; a Chev Suburban pick up. But the local Healey owners were quick to come to Steve s rescue offering plenty of support and I m sure it will not interfere with their other travel plans. Annette and Brian Aitken have been busy lately having sold their house in Frankston and moving to another in Frankston South. Sounds like they are hardly downsizing as apparently the new place has a four car garage. After the August general meeting they are off overseas and having another visit to Goodwood. In Australian Austin-Healey magazine, Patrick Quinn wonders where a BT7, which appeared on Ebay has been for the last 36 years. Iain McPherson cannot fill in the gap but he does remember the car. It is the 3000 that Joe Jarick owned after he sold his BN1 late in the 1960s. Joe later sold the 3000 to finance the purchase of his first 100S. Iain recalls Joe taking him around to see the 3000s new owner Don Marsh. As day turned to night Don decided that he should take Iain for a spirited run along the road through the Mt Coot-tha Forest on the outskirts of Brisbane. Iain recalls as we drifted around a left hand bend I thought to myself gee we went close to that guide post but he must know what he is doing. However, when they got back home Don agreed that he went a bit close to that post back there. The BN1 that Joe Jarick owned mentioned in the previous item has recently been bought by Nisbet Marshall of Callanish Restorations and by now will have been bought back from Brisbane to Nisbet s workshop near Creswick for a full restoration. 6 Hundreds & Thousands - May 2015

AUSTIN-HEALEYS THAT RACED IN AUSTRALIA Words & pics Iain McPherson Jack Skolnik, a wealthy Melbourne businessman who was involved in a number of ventures, including Grosvenor Motor Auctions in Brighton Road St Kilda, owned a silver blue Austin-Healey BN , registered GHA 445 in mid-1955, which he allowed his 20 year old step-son Robin Rockman to drive. In July 1956 The Argus reported on a court case in which a young Robin Rockman from Toorak was caught for speeding in New Street Brighton in his low slung sports car the previous November. Robin admitted being caught for a similar incident in Dandenong Road five weeks earlier. He was fined 10 pound and lost his licence for six months. Young men in high-powered sports cars should realise they had no privileged position in relation to the laws and rules of the road, the judge warned. The Austin-Healey was entered at motor races in the name of Grosvenor Motor Auctions and was driven by either Robin Rockman or Kevin Hahn. It was fitted with Alfin drum brakes. In the Moomba TT at Fishermans Bend in February 1956 Kevin only completed four laps, but in the Argus Cup the following day he finished 5th behind the 100/S s of Brotherton and Phillips. At Rob Roy in April 1956 Robin drove the car to record a time to within 0.5 seconds of Stuart Charge in the Healey Special. Kevin used to also crew for the famous Beasley speedway family. He took over driving Alf Beasley s #1 Lea Francis for the 1957 season. Alf had planned to retire but was offered Pop Beasley s Holden. The #1 was transferred to that car and it was in that car that Alf was killed at Tracey s Speedway in Kevin eventually married Alf s widow and gave all motor sport away. Apparently Kevin had a sense of humour and was great company to be with. At Fishermans Bend he gave the Austin- Healey to a friend (not Robin) to drive in the next event knowing the brakes were giving trouble. He could not help laughing when the Austin-Healey went straight ahead at the end of the straight. It is not known how long Skolnik/Rockman owned the car, but in 1961 the car was sold through John Jones Motors to someone by the name of McLennan. In the mid 1960s I used to see it sitting a Hawthorn side street never seeming to be used. Eventually it found its way to a couple of different owners in Castlemaine where the original registration number lapsed in Up and going again a year or two later I remember it breaking down in front of our farm at Melton. I can t remember the nature of the problem but he was soon going again. By then it was painted a light metallic green colour. As an aside, at about the same time the BN1 of Max McKeon from Stawell broke down on the Highway at Melton and he asked if he could leave the car at the farm for a couple of weeks. It was during that stay that I found that his car was in fact the ex-jim Leech car from the 1953 Australian Grand Prix. I kept track of the car as it passed through a number of owners, then it disappeared in Central Victoria in the 1980s. I wish I knew where that car is these days! The Rockman car then then showed up in Croydon in 1971 when the new owner joined the club. From there it disappeared. After 43 years I thought it was time to do some investigation. I found that the family still lived at the same address, but for whatever the reason, the old lady I spoke to said, I don t know what you are talking about. Hundreds & Thousands - May

Event Reports I can report on two events conducted in the last month where AHOC members competed but not in much detail I m afraid as I was not at either meeting with the MG motor yet to be rebuilt and the small matter of a family holiday commitment! Three months in a row where I have had to rely on Natsoft results and contact with our competing members for information! Pretty frustrating but the second half of the year promises much more activity for me in particular and Team Healey in general. Ken Leigh 4-Hour Enduro for HQ Holdens Winton 8 & 9 August Winton Historic Meetng (long track) Run by the Victorian Historic Racing Register entries are still open as this report is written, so I am uncertain of AHOC members participation. Go to closer to the date for details of entries, schedules etc. Expect to see our members in Group S Production Sports Cars (Brian Duffy and Peter Kaiser likely entries the Vogt MGB is still not running. I am trying to borrow money for the engine rebuild from a pessimist because they don t expect it back!), Group Lb Sports and Racing (Phillip Aitken, Geoff McInnes and Graham Marks potentially running), Group M&O Sports and Racing (Peter Jackson having his first event in his Brabham BT29 and Peter Williams in his Brabham possibly running) and the Regularity event. No organised run to Winton planned. Make your own way and look for fellow Healeys in the car park. Alfa Club Sprints State Motorcycle Track Broadford14 July The Alfa Club Sprint event at the State Motorcycle Complex at Broadford saw Iain McPherson having just his second run in his recently acquired Alfa Romeo based sports car. Typically understated, Iain said he ran quite well, enjoyed the track and improved his times as the day progressed. I think Iain is the first AHOC member to compete at Broadford. The Alfa Club runs there at least once annually. The MSCA has plans to run an event there at some time in the future as an alternative to Calder which in its present rundown state is not high on our priorities. Purchased in 1975, the land and tracks are dedicated to motorcycle racing, on dirt and on bitumen tracks. The bitumen track is fairly new and car use is limited with restrictions re track numbers in the run groups due to the narrow width of the bitumen which is designed for motorcycles. On Iain s sprint day the Alfa Club ran groups of 10 to 14 cars. With entries of 100 or more for typical MSCA events this poses some logistical problems for our organizers. POINTS TOWARD AHOC ASSOCIATE CHAMPIONSHIP and 4 fastest laps Iain McPherson (Alfa Special) 831 pts , , , POINTS TOWARD AHOC COMPETITION CHAMPIONSHIP & 4 fastest laps Brian Duffy (3000) 871 pts # , , , # denotes new fastest lap MSCA Sandown 21 June 2015 Eight AHOC members enjoyed a great day at Sandown with perfect sunny, still but cold conditions and a very well run meeting with a record total entry of 140 sprint/regularity cars plus a Come and Try group. We were very lucky with the weather but the cold track left us all just a little short of our best times. The MG Car Club used this MSCA round as a round of their club championships so numbers were up by about 25 MGs with about 20 of these not being regulars. We are seeing growing support for the efficiently run MSCA events albeit in more modern cars. Not so long ago the numbers were falling and fears were held for the long term viability of the Association. Regular entries are now flowing through from the Come and Try concept and Facebook and other communication efforts are paying dividends. With the older marque clubs Healey, Sprite, Triumph, Jaguar, MG, Fiat etc suffering from ageing membership and increasing values of their cars and reduced interest in track activities we need to realistically accept that if our remaining competitors want to compete on the track with our older cars the MSCA needs the financial support of entries from younger drivers with their more modern cars. Besides, it can be quite satisfying to beat a modern in our oldies and generate respect from the younger drivers. That interest and respect was certainly provided by a great display of five of our best Healeys running together in the Regularity group. Rob Raverty and Tony Rogers in their Sixes battled hard against the Fours of David Kelly, Leon O Brien and Shane O Brien in Hugh Purse s Healey. They managed to get on to the track pretty much together in each Regularity session and looked and sounded so much better than the modern cars or am I just biased? Aiming to achieve nominated lap times is the goal in regularity, but that didn t stop the boys trying fairly hard for bragging rights. Shane and Tony ran hard and close with the O Brien/Purse 100 just 0.2 seconds quicker than the Roger s Six. As Tony comes to grips with his new Healey and gets the Porsche handling out of his head I suspect this might change? Leon O Brien came very close to his best ever lap time at Sandown and he and Rob Raverty ran close together in each session as Rob struggled with a slight top end misfire in the newly modified six cylinder, allowing Leon s Four to just pip Rob s Six for bragging rights (and I bet Leon will let Rob know too!). Meanwhile David Kelly had a rare opportunity to enjoy the Team Healey garage at an MSCA event because he is so often Hundreds & Thousands - August

acting as our Clerk of Course. You could see his enjoyment as he split the times of the other Healeys but had to put up with the unexpected arrival of Roger the goat who insisted on sitting in David s passenger seat and giving his usual unwanted advice, never having had a previous opportunity to annoy David. Well, that would have fallen on deaf ears as David has been competing in his red and black Four for many years and there is nothing Roger could have taught him about driving the Healey. The MSCA regularity competition was won by Shane O Brien with a trophy to pick up next event. There were 14 competitors and Leon came 6th, Rob 7th, David 8th (great battle boys) and Tony Rogers 12th after setting a rather optimistic lap time target and coming up a bit short. He did drive very consistently in his third session with all five laps within half a second in the 1.42s but slower than his nominated time. Representing AHOC in the Sprints were Peter Kaiser in his modern Mini, Russell Baker finally back on the track in his turbo PRB Clubman and Rod Vogt in the blue Bugeye. Peter gave the Mini some exercise with his good friend Geoff Vernon in his similar car, being team mates in 6-Hour relays and probably preparing for upcoming relays. Russell and I ran in the same sprint group and after nearly two years of mechanical woes, noise bans and a couple of panel damage setbacks Elaine and I convinced Russell to take it easy and make sure he had a trouble free day. I imagine he was gritting his teeth in frustration in Run One as he stayed behind the Sprite for the full session, but came in all smiles. After that I didn t see him for dust, blowing me off down the straight and off chasing other clubmans and Loti (is that the plural of Lotuses?) Elise and Exige models. A very fast group and a lot of fun. For our fourth run they combined dwindling run group numbers and Russ and I found ourselves running with the MG group, many of whom were quite slow. A lot of fun passing them at quite a big speed differential, always conscious that we were not seen to be racing. At least I could still see Russell not too far up in front in the heavy traffic. With run group density up from 20 to 26 with special permission from CAMS for this one meeting there were few chances for a clear run and no chance of improving on previous best lap times. However, we both finished second in our respective classes, the Bugeye being pipped by just a few tenths by the Peter Clarke lightweight Sprite driven again that day by ex Formula 3 driver and Sprite Club member Glen Coombs (I will keep mentioning that every time he wins). Peter returned from an overseas holiday that morning. I wish he had run in his jet lagged state to give me a chance of a win. So, well done to Russell for going home in one piece, improving his times as the day progressed to finish at an impressive with a lot more to come. But gradually please Russ! POINTS TOWARD AHOC COMPETITION CHAMPIONSHIP for Healeys, with 4 fastest laps Shane O Brien (100/4) 934 pts , , , Rod Vogt (Sprite) , , , Rob Raverty (3000) , , , Tony Rogers (3000) , , , David Kelly (100/4) , , , Leon O Brien (100/4) , , , POINTS TOWARD ASSOCIATE CHAMPIONSHIP for non Healey cars with 4 fastest laps Peter Kaiser (Mini) 954 pts , , , Russell Baker (PRB) , , , Wakefield Park 27 & 28 June 2015 Geoff Leake and Damian Moloney competed at Wakefield Park, Goulburn in their 100/4s in two events over that weekend in June. On the Saturday the New South Wales Austin Healey Club ran their allocated round of the NSW CSCA Supersprint Championship the equivalent of the Victorian Marque Sports Car Association competition. Many Victorian AHOC members have attended this meeting in the past, given the chance to run at Wakefield plus an opportunity to socialize with our NSW Healey friends. Geoff is no stranger to Wakefield Park and soon settled in to his stride posting 49th fastest time of the day at in a field of 107, dominated by modern sports cars as usual. I don t believe Damian has run the Healey at Goulburn before certainly not in my records since becoming Comp Sec in 2008 and finished 57th just one second behind Geoff. They have quite a complicated class system in CSCA Competition and Geoff came second and Damian third in Marque C cc class, ahead of the NSW Healeys of Colin Goldsmith and Zac Mcafee in their Group S racers, another second behind Damian in the 1.16s. Further back were John Dowsett, Chris Komor and Patrick Townsend in less modified Healeys. Cameron Sell did just one session in the Sell family Healey Silverstone mechanical problems possibly? POINTS TOWARD COMPETITION CHAMPIONSHIP for HEALEYS and 4 fastest laps: Geoff Leake (100/4) 914 pts , , , Damian Moloney (100/4) , , , Then on the Sunday the Wakefield Park management run the annual All British/MRA race meeting. My very first taste of racing was at this weekend back in 2008, in the Sprite, when I was given a one day Wakefield race license after being observed to be competent in the Saturday sprints. I had so much fun I was hooked from that point onwards. Only the Victorian Healeys of Geoff and Damian raced on the Sunday in a mixed field of 17 cars in the All British/Mini races. They were up against modern and classic Minis, Spridgets, four Triumph TR8s, an MGB and a Triumph Dolomite Sprint. Geoff managed 11th, 7th and 10th in his three races and improved his fastest lap time from Saturday to a Hundreds & Thousands - August 2015

which is just 0.4 second off his best Wakefield time way back in That is good form ahead of Geoff being part of our Winton 6-Hour team in mid October. Damian was bit off the pace of his Saturday sprint times he is as known hard racer so I can only assume there might have been mechanical issues as he was consistently four seconds slower. POINTS TOWARD COMPETITION CHAMPIONSHIP for HEALEYS and 4 fastest laps Damian Moloney (100/4) 917 pts , , , Geoff Leake (100/4) , , , A CLOSING THOUGHT If everything seems to be going well you have obviously overlooked something. I recently had the pleasure of driving this route again during May when the fields and mountains were in their most vibrant green and wild flowers abounded along the road. Standing by my 1956 Austin-Healey 100M at one of the most famous spots along Route 1. This is the location of the Bixby Bridge built in 1932 and often used as a backdrop in classic movies of the 1950s, including some by Alfred Hitchcock. Bixby Bridge can be clearly seen in this shot on the left. The grille badge is from the Santa Cruz British Car Club. The map shows Highway 1 from Monterey to Hearst Castle. Photographed points are noted on the map so you can follow this amazing four-hour journey between the coast and the Los Padres National Forest. A wonderful place to stop for lunch and enjoy the panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The Rocky Point Restaurant was built in Hundreds & Thousands - August 2015

Approaching a fast left-hander with a shear drop to the ocean on the right. An afternoon stop for hot coffee at the Big Sur River Inn. This location is about half way down the Route 1 drive. Behind the Inn is a swiftly flowing stream of fresh, cold mountain water. The Gerry Coker designed cloisonné badge is mounted on Along Route 1 there are dozens of pull-offs where it is easy to stop your car and have the Pacific Ocean as a photographic backdrop. each side of this car, just where Donald Healey mounted his Drivers Club badge. Continuing on down for the last leg of the day s journey. There are many straight stretches where you can drop down a gear and hear the 100M Healey s engine rev toward its red line. Point Sur Lighthouse sets atop the stone island in the background. This island was formed by an ancient volcano eruption after the core cooled into stone and the ocean washed away the earth around the core. Another spectacular view of the mountains meeting the ocean combined with a detailed shot of the Healey s interior. This car is equipped with the optional leathercovered dash and cockpit surrounds. This proud view of the Austin-Healey 100M shows the car from a lower angle, making it appear quite aggressive. Notice the small red M on the grille flash. The conclusion of the trip brings us into San Simeon where Hearst Castle is located. Be sure to spend time at the castle to see all of the estate of the famous newspaper publisher William Hearst. This drive takes about three to four hours, and traffic is normally very light along the winding two-lane road, especially on weekdays. If you stop for photographs and a meal, it becomes a full-day affair. If you have never had the opportunity to drive this road, put it on your Bucket List. When you are in the beautiful Monterey area, (perhaps for the historic races and the Pebble Beach Concours) schedule yourself a day to relax and head on down the coast on Route 1. 16 Fueling Around By Ray Lindner (brother of Gordon Lindner) As much as I would like to be able to write such things as The Life of Brian this is sadly a less exciting subject: The Life of Petrol. I write this believing it will be of interest to some members who have bikes (or cars) that they use only on Pancake Thursday (whenever that is). What prompted this Article? A friend purchased a couple of 2005 model BMW R1150RT ex Military Police Bikes from Gray s Online. One had travelled 5000 km and the other 9000 km. Clearly it was time that some taxpayer funds were used to buy some shiny new replacement bikes. My friend Ken left the bikes sitting in his warehouse for many months while he went about the business of putting bread on the table and paying employee wages. It is highly probable that the bikes had not been used for a significant period of time before he purchased them meaning they sat around a lot prior to them coming to me. While this article came about as a result of working on BMW bikes it will apply equally to most vehicles and in particular modern vehicles with in-tank pumps and filters which includes many bikes. Stripping Away the Police Gear When purchased the bikes were in complete Police fit-out with sirens, fancy blue and red lights etc. but sadly this had to be removed prior to civilian registration being granted. Eventually he delivered them to my home after asking if I would assist by removing all of the police gear. I will not bore the readers with full details of that but it was quite a job and I learnt a lot about all the different models of police bikes from BMW with so many different wiring diagrams. As the bikes had sat for such a long time a service was required and there were a few panels that were slightly scratched and they went off to Melbourne Motorcycle Fairings in Spotswood for the required attention. 16 Hundreds & Thousands - August 2015

Now with panels removed I could at least see the fuel tanks. Getting access to the fuel filters in these bikes requires removal of most bodywork to access the fuel tank which has the fuel pump and filter mounted inside. As the bikes were several years old I decided to fit new fuel filters to both of them. This is no simple task as the plate pictured must be removed complete with the fuel pump, filter and various hose connections. These connections include fuel delivery, fuel return, fuel tank vent line and of all things a water and/or excess fuel drain pipe from the filler cap area. All hose clips are, of course, specials from BMW that require special (BMW of course) pliers to release and re-use. That didn t happen, I cut them away and used something generic. I had never started the engine of either bike as the batteries were stuffed so I just went about doing what I could see as being needed, after all what could be wrong with such low kilometres (I will never learn!). The first bike I changed the filter on was the one with 9K on the clock, did that, refitted the tank and a new battery and it ran like a new one. So on to the 5K bike which still had not been run. Changed the filter and all of the internal hoses that had gone very hard and were starting to crack, put the tank back but the bike would not run and I soon identified that the fuel pump did not work. First thought was what did I do wrong? So I removed the tank again then removed the pump and filter plate once more, tested the fuel pump by putting 12 volts direct to it and it did not run so I purchased a new one. There is more to this sorry story: I noticed after getting the bike running that the fuel gauge, which has incremental bars, did not work nor did the low fuel light. Before I ramble on about how expert I became at removing the tank internals, what I realised after a while was that the discoloration that I had noticed in the tank and fittings was actually a wax like coating on everything. I ended up cleaning the rheostat windings for the low fuel light and the internals of the float tube that operates the fuel gauge with an old toothbrush and liquid soap and they then worked fine. What had caused all of this damage to the pump and hoses? The root cause of all of this damage was old petrol. Petrol has a relatively short life once you put in into your vehicle s fuel tank. Now for some words from our sponsor BP. I will not attempt to give all relevant information and more detail may be obtained at: Petrol is a mixture of many components with different properties that contribute to the performance of the fuel. When petrol is left out in an open container exposed to the air it will in time completely evaporate. As it evaporates the composition and properties will change because different components evaporate at different rates. This is a normal feature of petrol and the same process takes place in equipment fuel tanks. Where petrol is kept for more than a week in equipment tanks then it can become stale and it is better to add fresh fuel before using. Examples are classic, veteran and vintage cars and bikes, racing cars and bikes, drag cars, boats, dual fuel vehicles and mowers. Generally petrol will last in equipment fuel tanks for about Hundreds & Thousands - August

three weeks at a temperature of around 20 degrees C, after that it will perform better when fresh petrol is added. Gum & Peroxide Formation (This is what happened to the Beemers) With long storage periods, especially in hot weather or engine heat the petrol can oxidize to form peroxides. These can attack rubber and metal, stripping away the liner on fuel lines or copper from fuel pumps and attacking rubber hoses. These normally take a few months to form in sufficient quantity to cause a problem. This process is faster if Ultra Violet light can get to the petrol. Maintaing Fuel in Equipment Tanks It is not possible to provide a foolproof strategy for engines used only intermittently but the following principles help. 1) Always add some fresh fuel when the equipment is to be used if it has not been used for more than a week. This will provide additional volatile components and protect from cold start high revving detonation and piston damage. 2) Always keep the tank half full to stop water vapour from being sucked in and condensing. 3) Use a fuel that contains anti-oxidants, metal deactivators and corrosion inhibitors to protect metal surfaces such as BP Ultimate 4) Using a hotter spark plug will help to reduce carbon deposits (The writer recommends reference to your motorcycle workshop before doing this) Here ends the words from our sponsor BP! The Cost if it All Goes Wrong I can certainly talk with some authority on BMW bikes having just done the job: Fuel Pump: $ U Hose for pump: $50.00 Fuel Filter: $50.00 In-tank hoses: $ Pump intake screen: $65.00 Fuel pump insulator: $30.00 Fuel Gauge Sensor Tube: $ Low fuel rheostat: $ That all comes to around $ but if you did it yourself you may manage to save some components. If you wanted a dealer or most large motorcycle shops to do the job you had better start looking at your budget as they would probably give you an all up estimate of around $ or more. Many manufacturers will have prices in excess of what are outlined in this article so keep that fuel fresh. Many years ago I worked on an old car where the fuel was so bad that it ate the bottom of the tank away. That won t happen now as they use plastic. For those readers who already knew all of this I trust that I have not suggested that you would not know how to suck eggs and to others I hope it made good and interesting reading and that it may at some time in the future save you a buck or two. 20 By this time, the preacher is at his wits end and dunks the drunk again but this time holds him down for about 30 seconds, and whenhe begins kicking his arms and legs about, he pulls him up. The preacher again asks the drunk: For the love of God, have you found Jesus? The drunk staggers upright, wipes his eyes, coughs up a bit of water, catches his breath, and says to the preacher: Are you sure this is where he fell in? JUST JOKING An Irishman is stumbling through the woods, totally drunk, when he comes upon a preacher baptizing people in the river. He proceeds into the water, subsequently bumping into the preacher. The preacher turns around and is almost overcome by the smell of alcohol, whereupon, he asks the drunk: Are you ready to find Jesus? The drunk shouts: Yes, I am. So the preacher grabs him and dunks him in the water. He pulls him back and asks: Brother, have you found Jesus? The drunk replies: No, I haven t found Jesus! The preacher, shocked at the answer, dunks him again but for a little longer. He again pulls him out of the water and asks: Have you found Jesus, brother? The drunk answers: No, I haven t found Jesus! As the Americans get closer to the 2016 election year, US citizens must remember that they cannot trust Hillary Clinton to create American jobs. The last time she had a meaningful job, she outsourced it to Monica Lewinsky.... And Monica blew it. Coach: Okay class, today we are going to play a game. When I say a fruit, you run to the right side of the court. And when I say a color, you run to the left side of the court. Got it? Class: Got it. Coach: Okay Ready, set ORANGE! Boy: Hey Beautiful, Can I have your number? Girl: No, I have a boyfriend. Boy: But I m gay, can I have the number now? Girl: Oh, okay! Here s the number. Boy: Thanks, I m not really gay. Ha!
