In 1989, the 13-year-old track was resurfaced with a concrete launchpad and a new timing system. In addition to the track modification, a reconditioned VIP tower complete with a timing deck, press center and corporate suites was built in NHRA purchased the track in 1993, and it was resurfaced in 1999 to include an updated timing system. From the west: Originally opened in 1950 as a way to encourage street racers to compete safely, Auto Club Raceway at Pomona was built with the combined efforts of the Pomona Valley Timing Association, Pomona Police Chief Ralph Parker and the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds. Through fundraisers, these three entities opened the track that began as a dirt parking lot with an asphalt strip down the middle. Bleachers that held no more than 300 spectators were in place next to a timing tower that was merely scaffolding with a roof on top. Auto Club Raceway at Pomona built its first permanent timing tower in 1968, and it was a meager three-story building that housed race control, the track office and a small media room. The small three-story tower that stood for more than 25 years gave way to a 14,600-square foot tower complete with corporate suites and a modern press center. In 1992, Auto Club Raceway at Pomona entered the final phase of the $4.5-million modernization project, which included the installation of permanent grandstand seats, with 20,000 of them having seat backs Kragen O Reilly NHRA Winternationals WINNER - Larry Dixon 3.808, RUNNER UP - Doug Kalitta 3.848, NO. 1 QUALIFIER - Cory McClenathan 3.787, LOW E.T. - McClenathan TOP SPEED - McClenathan WINNER - John Force 4.124, RUNNER UP - Ron Capps 4.123, NO. 1 QUALIFIER - Robert Hight 4.059, LOW E.T. - Hight TOP SPEED - Hight WINNER - Mike Edwards 6.577, RUNNER UP - Greg Anderson 6.618, NO. 1 QUALIFIER - Edwards 6.578, LOW E.T. - Edwards TOP SPEED - Edwards Auto Club of Southern California NHRA Finals WINNER - Antron Brown 3.840, RUNNER UP - Shawn Langdon 4.185, NO. 1 QUALIFIER - Tony Schumacher 3.794, LOW E.T. - Schumacher TOP SPEED - Schumacher WINNER - John Force 4.085, RUNNER UP - Jeff Arend 4.109, NO. 1 QUALIFIER - Ashley Force Hood 4.076, LOW E.T. - Force Hood TOP SPEED - Robert Hight WINNER - Shane Gray 6.566, RUNNER UP - Jeg Coughlin 6.568, NO. 1 QUALIFIER - Allen Johnson 6.551, LOW E.T. - V. Prior to the 2003 Auto Club NHRA Finals, the return road was repaved with a 25-foot stretch of pavement from the track turnout to the grandstands. The project included a fresh slurry coat on the staging lanes and walkways under the main grandstands. Prior to the 2004 season, a new television compound was added and LED lights were installed in the scoreboards, making them the easiest scoreboards to read on the NHRA circuit. In 2006, ground was broken for state-of-the-art skyboxes that debuted at the Auto Club of Southern California Finals in November. The Suites are positioned atop the east grandstand and on a clear day the Los Angeles skyline is visible. 203

Bandimere Speedway is on the left, one quarter-mile off Morrison Road. Track history: John Bandimere purchased a parcel of land west of Denver to build a race track as a supplement to the family auto parts business. The small drag strip began as a facility to provide a safe environment for young people to learn about cars and to race them off the streets. Over the course of 50 years, Bandimere Speedway has undergone many improvements. The greatest improvement was a $4 million renovation in During the construction, the facility was not part of the NHRA Full Throttle Series circuit. During the 1988 facelift, Bandimere Speedway tripled spectator seating, paved the pit areas, improved spectator parking, and added a state-of-the-art timing and press tower which includes corporate suites. Prior to the 2008 season, the entire track was redone, creating an all-concrete racing surface. During this process, a proprietary track cooling system was installed that drops the surface temperature of the racing surface by up to 20 degrees for improved racing action. The track is cooled inside 200 feet of the launching pad in both lanes by circulating 24,000 gallons of chilled water through the track. Additionally, over 150 MUSCO lights were added along both sides of the track and shutdown area improvements included new Trans-Lux L.E.D. scoreboards, as well as vast improvements to the sand track and shutdown area for racer and spectator safety. 206

Track history: Originally opened in 1968 as Donnybrooke Speedway, the track was renamed Brainerd Int l Raceway (BIR) in From 1968 to 1976, road racing was the predominant form of motorsports at BIR. The NHRA expanded its national event schedule and ventured north to BIR in In 1983, professional motorcycle racing was added to the facility s season program. The 800-acre facility is adjacent to North Long Lake and is located 120 miles north of the Twin Cities, 110 miles from Duluth, Minn., and 135 miles from Fargo, N.D. BIR has a three-mile, 10-turn road course, and the main straightaway serves as the drag strip during NHRA events. A go-kart track is located off the main road past the main entrance bridge. BIR replaced its drag strip in 2002 with a new 700-foot concrete launchpad. They also added new asphalt throughout the shutdown area. In April of 2004 the final step of the $1 million drag strip renovation that started in 2002 was completed. A new 30-inch-high retaining wall was constructed along the first 1,000 feet of the drag strip as an updated safety feature for racers and fans. In 2007 a new return road was added in front of the grandstands, giving fans a closer view of their favorite drivers following their runs. 208

It also was from this starting line, during the 2000 Mac Tools NHRA Gatornationals, that eight of 10 national records were set in the professional classes. Following the 2003 season, Gainesville Raceway underwent some significant renovations. The concrete launchpad at the starting line of the ultra-quick drag strip was extended to the 675-foot mark and the remainder of the racing surface, the shutdown area, and the professional pit area, were repaved. A new television compound was constructed for the ESPN crew on the north side of the drag strip, which frees up space in the pit area. The restroom facilities were upgraded in the timing tower, and new carpet and windows were installed in several of the corporate suites. The storm drainage system in the parking lots was upgraded and several of the access roads to the sportsman pit areas were improved. In 2007, the old tower was demolished and a new, state-of-the-art control tower was built in its place. The new VIP tower holds race-control operations, track offices, and a spacious media center. Track history: In 1968, a twisting 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course and quarter-mile drag strip were carved into the scenic Sonoma Valley and Infineon Raceway was born. Over the past 42 years the facility has developed into one of the premier motorsports and entertainment venues in the world, hosting events from the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The raceway completed a comprehensive $70 million modernization plan in 2002 that included a new concrete launchpad (660 feet), separation of the drag strip from the road course and creation of a new permanent grandstand that offers sweeping views of the racing action. More than nine million cubic yards of dirt was moved during the two-year project, which began in September The drag strip opened to rave reviews in 2002 as three track records were broken at the FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals, and the secondquickest elapsed time in Pro Stock Motorcycle history was recorded. The facility also reached another milestone in 2002 when it partnered with Infineon Technologies, giving the Munich (Germany)-based company naming rights to the raceway. The facility is now called Infineon Raceway and the strategic partnership will span 10 years. Track history: In 1958, led by Tom Binford, Frank Dickie, Rodger Ward and Howard Fieber, 15 Indianapolisarea businessmen and racing professionals invested $5,000 each to fund the development of what would become Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. The group purchased a 267-acre farm about seven miles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and developed a multipurpose auto racing facility. The original intention in creating Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis was to design a 15-turn, 2.5-mile road course. Nearly as an afterthought, and as an insurance measure against economic problems, the investment group decided to incorporate a quarter-mile drag strip into the long straightaway of the 2.5-mile road course design. Constructed with assistance from the NHRA, the drag strip was the first of the three courses to be completed, with the facility s first event held on the strip in the fall of During the 1960 U.S. Nationals in Detroit, a handshake agreement between Binford and NHRA founder Wally Parks promised that the event would move to Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis in The historic three-year pact was signed and sealed under a tree in Detroit Dragway s pits, and Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis eventually became the home of NHRA s biggest annual event. The NHRA purchased the entire facility in The first major improvement came in 1983 with the construction and dedication of Parks Tower, the four-story drag strip tower. In 1998, new grandstands, suites and a tower complex on the front straightaway were completed at the oval track at a cost of nearly $2.5 million, which included the repaving of the entire oval surface as part of a three-phase facility improvement project. In 2001, NHRA and Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis constructed a new drag strip racing surface, replacing the strip with a 660-foot concrete pad and laying new asphalt on the remainder of the track and shutdown area. Prior to the 2003 Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, eight new luxury suites were added along the top of the west-side grandstands of the drag strip, giving fans a unique perspective of the action on the famed quarter-mile track. In 2005, new soft-barrier walls were added to the oval. In 2011, the track announced a track entitlement with Lucas Oil Products. The track which had long been known as Indianapolis Raceway Park is now known as Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. 221

Track history: The track was created as a collaborative effort between Alfred Stauffer, who owned several hundred acres of farmland, and local racer George Weiler. Stauffer and Weiler, along with several members of the Eastern Custom Car Association, planned the layout and necessary facilities. A thin strip of asphalt measuring 30 feet wide and 2,500 feet long was laid in preparation for racers in Initially, the track was a one-fifth-mile track and was increased to the standard quarter-mile for the opening of the 1964 season marks the 47th year of operation and the track is still owned and operated by the Stauffer family. Maple Grove Raceway holds the distinction of being the site of many of the NHRA s most historic performances. Those memorable moments include Joe Amato and Shirley Muldowney making the first sideby-side four-second Top Fuel pass (1989); the first side-by-side Top Fuel race in which both drivers eclipsed 300 mph (Mike Dunn/Blaine Johnson); the first Top Fuel driver in the 4.70s (Cory McClenathan); the first Pro Stock driver in the 6.70s (Darrell Alderman); and the first Pro Stock Motorcycle rider in the 7.00s (Matt Hines). In 2004, a new food court area was constructed. In 2008 the track s timing system was upgraded to Compulink Fiber Optics and new LED scoreboards were installed. The Alfred S. Stauffer Memorial Walk of Fame and Victory Lane were constructed. The Walk of Fame honors individuals who ve contributed to the success of Maple Grove Raceway. In 2009, Maple Grove s strip became among the longest in the nation when 300 feet of pavement was added to the end of the dragstrip, along with a 250-foot sand trap, to make the track 4,075 feet from end to end marks the 48th year of operation Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals WINNER - Larry Dixon 4.906, RUNNER UP - Cory McClenathan 5.103, NO. 1 QUALIFIER - Dixon 3.786, LOW E.T. - Dixon TOP SPEED - Dixon WINNER - Cruz Pedregon 4.130, RUNNER UP - Matt Hagan 4.242, NO. 1 QUALIFIER - Hagan 4.011, LOW E.T. - Hagan TOP SPEED - Pedregon WINNER - Dave Connolly 6.580, RUNNER UP - Greg Anderson 6.579, NO. 1 QUALIFIER - Allen Johnson 6.551, LOW E.T. - Anderson TOP SPEED - Anderson MOTORCYCLE WINNER - Andrew Hines 6.916, RUNNER UP - LE Tonglet 6.913, NO. 1 QUALIFIER - Hector Arana 6.828, LOW E.T. - Arana TOP SPEED - Hines

Track history: Old Bridge Township Raceway Park opened in July 1965 and has since become the Northeast s premier drag racing facility. Conceived by Vincent Napp Sr., his brother Louis, along with Vincent s sons Richard and Vincent, Jr., the former 308-acre farm was converted into a drag strip in just over a year s time. A great success from the start, Englishtown, as race fans worldwide know it, was selected to be an official stop on NHRA s national event tour in 1968, when it held the NHRA Springnationals. The NHRA national event tour returned to Raceway Park in 1971 with the NHRA Summernationals. Now known as the K&N Filters SuperNationals, the event returned to the month of June in The famed Englishtown strip is not only one of NHRA s most historic quarter-miles, but also one of the busiest. Raceway Park hosts a variety of events including car shows, swap meets, family-oriented thrill shows, as well as the area s largest import, domestic, motorcycle, and nostalgia racing events. Constant reinvestment, renovations and expansion of the property have kept Raceway Park in the forefront of drag racing and the entire motorsports community. In 1975, a one-mile motocross track was added to the grounds. In 1996, an eighth-mile drag strip was built to host the NHRA O Reilly Auto Parts Jr. Drag Racing League, a program created at Raceway Park. In 2000, Raceway Park added a motocross practice facility and, in 2002, a karting oval and road course were opened. A 1.35-mile asphalt road course is currently under construction. In its 40th year of operation, the facility is still owned and operated by the Napp family and has become an icon in the world of drag racing. 226

Track history: The Fiorito family became involved with Pacific Raceways at its inception in 1958, when Dan Fiorito Sr. wanted to eliminate the dangers of illegal street racing by providing a safer, controlled environment. At the time, Dan Sr. owned a heavy road construction company and agreed to construct and pave the track. Pacific Raceways has a 2.25-mile road course carved out of the natural terrain, providing a total elevation change of nearly 128 feet. For the last 25 years, the property was leased to another operator and was named Seattle Int l Raceway. The property has returned to the Fiorito family and has assumed its original name. Prior to the start of the 2004 season, the Fioritos ripped up the starting line area and repaved the concrete launchpad, extending it from 400 feet to the 660-foot mark, to help ensure safe and competitive side-by-side racing for NHRA fans in the Pacific Northwest. Don Garlits had just recently been named Big Daddy at the US Nationals in Indianapolis down the road, and John Force was thirteen years old. Summit Motorsports Park opened under the leadership of new owner Bill Bader, Sr. on April 28, After a rocky start in which Bader reconsidered his investment, he committed himself to the project beginning with a mission statement which was predicated on providing a customer service driven, customer friendly facility that made good sense and focused on value. The facility has grown into one of the preeminent drag racing facilities in the country. In 2006 NHRA and the Bader family announced that a national event would be coming to Norwalk, followed by one of drag racing s most successful inaugural races in It was both the culmination of the senior Bader s vision and the beginning of a new era for the facility. In 2007, current president Bill Bader Jr. completed a $7 million facility expansion project that included paving the pits, new luxury sky box suites and a new state-of-the-art media center. 234
