Athlete Leadship Athletes Leading Area M into the Future! Do you enjoy talking about your experiences with Special Olympics with others? Do you want people to know what Special Olympics means to you? Would you like to be a part of the future of Special Olympics? If you can answer yes to any of these questions then maybe you should consider being on the Athlete Leadership Team! As a member of the ALT you will have the opportunity to share ideas with other athletes, help to spread the word about Special Olympics, take part in Opening Ceremonies, and be a role model to your fellow athletes. This year, one of the team s goals is to help athletes understand Healthy Habits; this is a program that has been developed by SOPA, and Area M s ALT is learning more about it so that they can share with everyone. In fact, look for a table at Area M Games in April where there will be information for you. And, if you were at the Valentine s Day Dance, you probably had a great time this was made possible by the Athlete Leadership Team! The Valentine s Day Dance is another of the team s goals. The team members were responsible for getting DJ Tommy, decorating, providing the cookies, chips, and drinks. It was a lot of work, but it was definitely worth it! If you would like to be a part of this exciting team, talk to your coach, look for the application on the Area M website (sopam.org), or contact Kristie (kdavis.aream@specialolympicspa.org) or Jan Holt (holt81173@msn.com). The team looks forward to having you join them! 50 Years of Empowerment The movement known worldwide as Special Olympics began simply as the idea of one extraordinary woman with extraordinary vision. Eunice Kennedy Shriver believed that people with intellectual disabilities were far more capable in sports and physical activities than many experts thought. And so, the world s largest amateur sports organization began as a day camp in the backyard of Eunice and Sargent Shriver. Mrs. Shriver organized the first International Special Olympics Games in Held at Chicago s Soldier Field, the event consisted of 1,000 athletes from 26 states and Canada competing in track & field, swimming and floor hockey. With more than 5 million athletes in over 170 countries, Special Olympics has come a long way since the first Games at Soldier Field, Chicago in There will be a 50th Anniversary Celebration in Chicago in July. In 2019, Special Olympics PA Area M will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Area M Games! Watch for more information on how we will be celebrating this Area M milestone. 3

4 SPORTS RE-CAP WINTER GAMES H H SOPA s Winter Games was held at Seven Springs Resort and Kirk Nevin Arena January 28th 30th. Area M had athletes competing in Alpine Skiing and Ice Speed Skating. The Ski Team came home with a total of 24 medals but more impressive is that all but 2 of the Athletes were in the top 4 heats! We would have more medals, but the last race on Tuesday was canceled because of the Ski Patrols concerns about safety due to the weather and snow conditions. Everyone on the Ski Team had a great time! ~ Head Coach Kathy Charron Another Winter Games another outstanding season for Area M Speed Skaters! The long hard speed skating season came to close at 2018 Winter Games with exceptional opportunities, effort and results by our dedicated group of Short Track Speed Skaters. ~ Head Coach Brett Eshenour Some highlights are listed below. l Aaron Barnes had the honor of lighting the Cauldron for the 2018 Winter Games and started things off for Area M doing an exceptional job. l Over the two-day skating event which was packed with great races, crazy crashes and all the wonder and excitement that is short track, our athletes and partners produced 66 personal records and seasons bests. They mined 28 Gold, 21 silver, 11 bronze and 5 4th place awards! Outstanding job by all of our athletes and partners! l The Area M Speed Skaters also had the opportunity to demonstrate a proposal for a new Traditional Relay event they had been working diligently on in practice. Area M invited the other participating programs to join in on the demonstration with guidance from our outstanding Unified Partners. The feedback from Athletes, Coaches, Meet Officials was unbridled enthusiasm for the new event which even earned a nickname The Funky Relay! The proposal for this event has been submitted to SOPA and after evaluation hopefully to SOI to be included as a new entry level medal event in future Winter Games. l Area M Speed Skaters, Unified Partners, Coaches and parents are all looking forward to the new Indoor Winter Games to be held in York during March of 2019! HHHH 4
