2 Special Olympics is a global movement that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sport, every day around the world. Through sports, health, education and community programming, Special Olympics is tackling inactivity, intolerance, isolation and injustice that people throughout the world face, especially people with intellectual disabilities. The athletes of Special Olympics nearly 20,000 strong here in Pennsylvania are constant reminders of all that is right with the human spirit. schenley park oval The mission of Special Olympics PA is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. All training and competition opportunities are provided free of charge to the athletes and their families, enabling everyone to experience the benefits of Special Olympics that extend well beyond the playing field.

3 The UNcathlon is a UNique team challenge event that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power of teamwork to bring awareness to Special Olympics of Pennsylvania (SOPA). The event will take place on Sunday April 28, 2019 at the Schenley Park Oval, located just outside of Downtown Pittsburgh. The UNcathlon event embodies the daily goal of SOPA: inclusion & acceptance through sport! This unique event consists of 11 events, not the traditional 10 found in a decathlon. Since the UNcathlon is a fundraiser held in honor of Special Olympics PA, the 11th Event is Fundraising! The funds raised will help to provide training & sport competitions free of charge to our wonderful Special Olympics athletes. The event will be UNified, UNconventional & UNforgettable! Teams consist of 5 individuals, plus an additional athlete from Special Olympics Pennsylvania. All teams must be co-ed. Participants will be challenged both physically & mentally; and will be tasked with the additional challenge of fundraising money in support of nearly 20,000 athletes. The day of the event, each team will take part in 10 physical trials, with each individual team member participating in 2 events. The 10 events will test speed, strength and endurance.
