1 NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES Czechoslovakia * The New Board of the Czechoslovakian Olympic Committee elected last July 8 are: PT, Dr. Richard NEJEZCHLEB; VPT, Mr. Ludvik CERNY; Prof. Vl. CERNUSAK; Dr. Miroslav HLAVACEK; Mr. Ludvik UHLIR; SG, Dr. Frantisek KROUTIL; S, Mr. Vladimir PACL. France * The Sports Academy, a French organization founded in 1905 and presided over by Count Jean de BEAUMONT, Vice President of the International Olympic Committee, is composed of fifty French members. On the 6th of October this organization will receive foreign members. Mr. Avery Brundage, President of the National Olympic Committee, will be granted the Honoris Causa Doctor title, while Emil ZATOPEK (Czechoslovakia), Roger BANNISTER, (Great Britain), and Paul MARTIN (Switzerland) will be coopted as foreign correspondents. Democratic Republic of Germany * In the bulletin "The GDR and Sports" Mr. Gunter KLEY, a member of the Board of the German Yachting Federation of the GDR, talks about yachting and the technical-scientific revolution. We quote here some extracts which particularly caught our attention: "The international class "Tempest" has been chosen by 12 votes to 10 as a sixth category of Olympic boats for This model is also a keel-boat, a "two-men" open boat of a plastic substance, which by its design resembles the "Flying Dutchman." 2 Jan PROCPOR, in That way it is evident that the technical-scientific revolution was not stopped by the World Yachting Federation and that shows that the types of Olympic boats used until now are going to be changed for modern boats, so as to give Olympic yachting new incentives... In yachting, performance is inseparably tied to good quality boats and sails. Thus the technicalscientific revolution also influences, to a great extent, the material side of yachting. New scientific discoveries, which cannot yet be foreseen today, will determine in the future the ultimate development in the field of Olympic yachting. Yachts equipped with automatic rigid sails or profiled sails and metal masts, ballasted boats, uncapsizable yawls, electronic control of navigation and sails, or--as at present undergoing trials--the use of an electronic starting gun (to avoid false starts), to name just a few of the many inventions and creative ideas, put new tasks before yachtsmen of the whole world." Federal Republic of Germany * Mr. Walther TROGER, Secretary General of the NOC of the Federal Republic of Germany, has just been elected Mayor of the Olympic Village. Our warmest congratulations. * The Sports Film Festival "Sportfilmtage 1970" will be held in Oberhausen from November 8-11,1970. The Secretariate will accept applications until October 10. ltaly * The Second Youth Games-The 1970 Olympic Day The Second Youth Games were closed with the solemn celebration of Olympic Day last July 4th. The success of the 1970 Youth Games surpassed that of the 1969 Games. Out of 8,055 communes, more than 5,000 (i.e. one thousand more than during the last Games) 498

3 have organized Games in their territories. There were more than 7,000 participants, boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 15, in the competitions. Last June 28th the final part of the Games started with a joyful ceremony at the CONI headquarters in Rome - Foro Italico - which was attended by 5,560 finalists of the 93 Italian provinces and the Republic of St. Marin. The program of this second edition of the Games included the celebration of Olympic Day, which was held with great enthusiasm and during which many rewards were given to sports associations, leaders, and athletes. In Rome, during the national stage of the Games, Olympic Day was celebrated by 5,560 finalists who gathered on the Place of the Capitole. The ceremony, whose main parts were broadcasted by the Italian Television, opened with a parade of color bearers, carrying flags of the provinces and of the Republic of St. Marin. The Lord Mayor of Rome then lit the tripode with the "Flame of Rome." The Olympic Hymn and the music of the XVII Olympic Games of 1960 in Rome put an end to this event while the Capitole Palace was illuminated by thousands of lights in the darkening evening. From 1971 onward, the Games will take place under the high patronage of the President of the Republic. Mr. Saragat announced this at the Palace of the Quirinal on the occasion of a visit paid to him by the finalists of the Games. Youth * The National Photographic Contest on the Games On the occasion of the communal and provincial stage of the Second Youth Games, the CONI organized, among its provincial committees, a photography contest with a first prize of 300,000 lire and twelve second prizes of 100,000 lire each. 499

4 The contest enjoyed a success far greater than had been expected. Each province sent 920 photos in color and in black and white to the central headquarters. These were exhibited in one of the halls of the Foro Italico: The Exhibition of the 1970 Youth Games. The Jury of the Contest--presided over by the writer Libero BIGIARETTI and composed of the writer Giuseppe BRUNAMONTINI and Luigi CROCENZI, Director of the Center for Photographic Culture--awarded the first prize to the provincial committee of Sassari (Sardinia) for "the choice of ambiance and the frame where the action takes place, thus pointing out the poverty of the country and the lack of sports facilities which has been overcome thanks to a great outburst of passion for sports and a great deal of imagination." The Jury awarded the twelve second prizes to the provincial committee of Belluno for "a happy fusion between the picturesque elements tied in the middle and the effort of competition, all within an efficient control of light and color"; to the provincial committee of Rome for "the rigorous framing which unites the aridity of the 500

5 landscape and the concentration of young athletes during gymnastic exercises"; and the other ten prizes to the provincial committees of Venise, Grossec, Pérouse, Viterbo, Padoue, Sienne, Rome, Rome, and Agrigento. Nederlands * We have been informed that Mr. Jonkheer Abraham Pieter Cornelis van Karnebeek has passed away in his 65th year. He was the brother of the vice president of the International Olympic Committee. We extend our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to his family. Switzerland * The Federal School for Gymnastics and Sports of Macolin will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on the 4th of September. We offer our warmest congratulations to Dr. Kaspar WOLF, its Director, and to all those who have contributed to the national and international reputation of the school. * The sculptor Milo MARTIN, who won in 1928 the Olympic Silver Medal for sculpture for his "resting athlete," has passed away in Lausanne in his 77th year. The "Naiad" of the Ouchy Quai in Lausanne expresses perfectly his quiet and serene art, while demonstrating at the same time his technique as a stone cutter. * The Swiss Swimming Championships were held in the new swimming pool of Renens (Vaud) from August 14 to 16. Two hundred ninety-nine boys and 317 girls of an average age of 17 and 15 respectively participated in the events. They represented 33 sports associations. Spain * On the occasion of the Plenary Session of the Comité Olímpico Español, which took place on the 13th of July, we would like to mention a change which took place in the position of Secretary General of the Committee. 501

6 Henceforth, Mr. Antonio NAVARRO will occupy this position. He replaces Mr. Benito CASTEJON, who resigned for personal reasons. * For some time the Comité 0límpico Español and the Comité Olimpico de Chile have been negotiating in order to exchange information so that a sports agreement between both Committees on the granting of fellowships for courses of instruction for athletes, coaches, sports facilities, etc. be reached. * On the 21st of July, 1970, in Arenys de Mar (Barcelona) the World Yachting Championships (Optimist Class) will take place, with the participation of 140 children of 15 different countries. * The National Institute for Physical Education and Sports has just organized the first course for instructors in physical education. The 500 students who participate will receive the triple title of Master Instructor of Physical Education, National Polysports Instructor and European Instructor for non-professional Physical Education and Sports. This last title is granted by the Council of Europe. * The International amateur basketball federation has entrusted Spain with the organization of the 1973 European Basketball Championships. * To be held in Spain in 1970: September 4th: European Swimming, Diving and Water Polo Championships in Sabadell and Barcelona September 13th: European Sailing Championships (Finn-D Class) in Arenys de Mar (Barcelona) September 18th: VI World Championships of Pelota in San Sebastian September 23rd: World Championships of amateur golf, (men, teams) in Madrid September 30th: World Championships of amateur golf, (women, teams) in Madrid 502
