3 Message from the Chair CSCS REGISTERED ATHLETES The Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan has over 230 registered athletes in Podium, Canadian Elite, Canadian Development, and Provincial Development levels which are based on athletic achievement and carding status. STEFANIE LAWTON, Curling LOGAN CAMPBELL, Sailing - Paralympic Silver medalist at the 2014 World Championships The Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan (CSCS) is proud to be a member of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute (COPSI) Network. The COPSI Network is a key contributor to Canada s world leading Olympic and Paralympic podium performances by providing high performance athletes with access to a world-class, multi-sport training environment. Through collaboration with our partners, the CSCS continues to deliver quality performance services, life services and coach education programs aimed at ensuring our athletes and coaches are supported in achieving their personal and athletic dreams. This year, our athletes once again made us proud, capturing medals at events around the world, including one gold and three bronze medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. These efforts are possible thanks to the generous support of our partners: Sask Sport Inc., the Government of Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Canadian Paralympic Committee, the Coaching Association of Canada, Own the Podium, the Government of Saskatchewan, the Coaches Association of Saskatchewan and the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan. The CSCS is thrilled to take part in the various events and activities related to the Government of Canada s declaration of 2015 as the Year of Sport in Canada. This declaration was also supported by the Government of Saskatchewan and the CSCS is looking forward to the opportunity to raise the profile of sport in our province, and to celebrate our athlete s achievements, including at upcoming competitions this year, such as the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games and the 2015 FIFA Women s World Cup. Finally, I would like to thank the members of the CSCS Management Committee and Athlete Advisory Committee, as well as our staff, for all of their hard work and commitment to building a stronger sport network in Saskatchewan and Canada. CHAIR LARRY LAFRENTZ

4 Brittany Hudak Cross Country Ski - Paralympic Brittany Hudak has had an incredible 2015 so far when it comes to para-nordic skiing. At the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Cup in February of 2015, Hudak won two gold medals (one kilometre classic and 15 km classic), two silvers (five km classic, five km freestyle) and one bronze (one km freestyle). She followed this performance by winning three gold medals at the Canada Winter Games. She finished first in the 1.2 km classic, 2.5 km classic and five km classic. At the Canada Games, Hudak became the first ever para-athlete to compete in the able-bodied 4 x 3.5 km relay. She passed three skiers to move the team from 10th to seventh place. She was also the flag bearer for Team Saskatchewan at the closing ceremonies. As the top Canadian in the event, Hudak qualified for the 2014 Sochi Paralympics, where she had two top 10 finishes. I didn t know what training was at a high performance level. And that s where Colette really helped speed up the process, Hudak said. She knew all the tools that I would need in order to get myself where I wanted to be. She s always been such an inspiration for me that it always made me want to be better. Hudak was recognized by Sask Sport Inc. as the February Athlete of the Month in It s been an incredible year, Hudak said in a media interview. To have the results I did this year wasn t expected at all. I knew I was doing my training the best that I could. I knew that I was determined and putting the work in, but when you start seeing the results, it s kind of spectacular. Hudak said one of the keys to her success has been the Canadian Sports Centre Saskatchewan. The services that are offered mean everything to me, she said. When it comes to proper nutrition, they let you know what you can and can t eat before a workout and what you can to properly recover and perform at your best. All the services are so helpful in so many ways and there are so many tools an athlete needs to be successful, whether it s nutrition, your weight program or your recovery (massage, chiropractor). Hudak was first introduced to the sport by Colette Bourgonje, who won 10 medals in nine Paralympic appearances in the sport of para-nordic skiing and wheelchair athletics. In 2013, the pair spent a month together in Canmore, training with the national team. Photo Credit: Lediard Foto AS The success of the training was evident at Hudak s first national event: the 2013 IPC World Cup. She placed fourth in the five kilometre standing race.

Sport Science A total of 58 athletes accessed over 417 hours of sport science services including strength and conditioning, nutrition, biomechanics, and mental training provided by the SMSCS in Provincial Sport Organizations also benefitted from 733 hours of sport science programs directed at high performance teams. Sport Medicine The SMSCS provided 362 sport medicine services including physiotherapy, athletic therapy, chiropractic, massage and acupuncture sessions, as well as covering braces and orthotics claims to athletes in Life Services CSCS Life Services including tutoring, media relations training, job placement skills, and personal development opportunities and skills training are designed to help athletes achieve both their personal and athletic goals. A new program Game Plan was introduced to help transitioning and retiring athletes involved in Own the Podium Olympic and Paralympic sports plan for their life and career beyond sport. The program s services included career strategizing, transition support, professional development and educational guidance. Game Plan arose following the 2010 Olympic Games Debrief and the 2011 Business reports that identified the need by athletes, coaches and other sport system stakeholders across Canada. A total of 24 athlete counselling sessions were provided and 30 other contacts were supported through the program in The 6th Annual Athlete & Coach Advance Conference was held in Saskatoon. A total of 81 athletes, coaches and athlete support personnel attended this year s professional development conference. This year s outstanding speakers included: two-time Olympic gold medalist Heather Moyse, 2010 Olympic gold medalist Lucas Makowsky, and Paralympians Colette Bourgonje and Brittany Hudak, as well as several presentations by SMSCS professionals and other high performance athletes from Saskatchewan. The Speakers Bureau continued its popularity, with more than 4,600 individuals hearing presentations from CSCS athletes in The program s goal is to increase the public profile of Saskatchewan s high performance athletes, as well as the benefits that come from participating in sport. Olympic athlete profiles were also raised through the Gold Medal Plates events in Regina and Saskatoon. These competitive culinary events were held in 11 cities across Canada, selecting the top chefs in each location, with the winners competing in the Canadian Culinary Championships. The Gold Medal Plates are also designed to raise awareness about, and raise funds for, Canada s Olympic athletes, who act as guest speakers and corporate table hosts at each event. Since 2004, the event has contributed more than $9.5 million to Canada s high performance athletes. Olympic hopefuls Jarret Kenke, Taryn MacKenzie, Nahoni Tootoosis, Michelle Young and Kylie Zirk attended the Saskatoon event, while Tianna Kennet, Kendell Massier and Lexi Vincent participated in the Regina event. The event in Regina was declared the most successful in Canada, increasing the likelihood that future Gold Medal Plates will be held in the province. Athletes continued to access the Rosetta Stone Language Training program, with 16 athletes logging 96 hours on the program this year. Athletes also provided direct input into the CSCS s programs and services through the nine member Athlete Advisory Council. Two of the members Carolyn Ganes and Bobbi Janzen were part of the CSCS Management Committee this year. Improving the Daily Training Environment Registered CSCS athletes can enjoy the benefits of the GymFit program at any of the 11 GymFit partners in Regina, Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. High performance athletes need access to resistance training, recovery and cardiovascular training equipment to maximize their results in competitive sport, and GymFit brings numerous fitness facilities to CSCS athletes, enhancing training environment options. 7 Heather Hynes Nutritionist As the saying goes, you are what you eat. In sports, Heather Hynes feels that how effective you are depends on what you eat. Hynes is a sports nutritionist with the Sport Medicine & Science Council of Saskatchewan. For nine years, she has been teaching athletes the importance of getting proper nutrition. JASON WEBER, Human Performance Center University of Saskatchewan Fitness Centre Level 10 Fitness, LG Fitness, First Steps Spinal Cord Injury Wellness Centre, the University of Regina Fitness and Lifestyle Centre, the Moose Jaw YMCA, CBI Fitness Centre, Craven Sport Services, Moksha Yoga, P.A.C.E. Athletic Training Centre, University of Saskatchewan Fitness Centre, and the Saskatoon YWCA. Athlete Assistance Funding In , 71 athletes received Future Best and 41 athletes obtained Saskatchewan Program for Athletic Excellence (SPAE) financial support. Future Best and Saskatchewan Program for Athletic Excellence (SPAE) assist Saskatchewan s high performance athletes with the costs associated with training, competitions, general living expenses, sports equipment, post-secondary education, and coaching. SPAE funding is available to athletes identified by Sport Canada s Athlete Assistance Program (carding), and Future Best is intended for non-carded athletes deemed likely to gain National Team status in the future by their national and provincial sport organizations. You have to be very efficient with the calories that you re consuming, she said. It s quite a science. It s a lot more than, Go eat your fruits and veggies. Hynes was involved in speed swimming when she was younger, starting off recreationally and then advanced to the competitive level. As she was swimming, she always felt that her eating patterns had a huge impact on her performance in the water. This realization led her toward her current career path. She earned her BSc in Nutrition from the University of Saskatchewan in 2002 and her MSc in Exercise Physiology at the U of S in She works closely with athletes, helping them create structured eating plans. It s all about organizing their eating world and their training world a bit better, said Hynes. When an athlete is on a provincial team or above, I either work with them in a team or individual setting, and we talk about fueling strategies for training: when to eat, what to have, how much to have of it. Or we talk about competition planning. If you have a game at 9 a.m., what are you having the night before? What do you have in the morning of? What are you taking to the venue with you? And then I do a lot of individual consultations. The plan usually differs between each athlete. Some of them have specific questions like, I weight train at this time and I have my sport training at this time. What should I eat? How much of it should I have? Others just say, I want to eat better because their performance is lacking because of their eating habits, she said. Hynes adds that she has to consider other factors such as underlying medical conditions as well as training, school and family schedules. For some people it s kind of like a total overhaul, but you want to go at that slowly as to not to scare them away. For others, it s just finetuning the timing. Although Hynes doesn t personally take credit for the success the athletes she works with achieve, it is rewarding to see them compete at a high level. When an athlete achieves a medal at a Commonwealth games or World Championship and says, Thank you, you had a big impact on my career, then that s great. she said. We ve had some great performances from Saskatchewan athletes recently, so that s always rewarding.

8 John Haver Provincial Rowing Coach North When John Haver began his career as a rowing coach, the transition was hardly like a gentle ride down the stream. When I first started coaching I wasn t comfortable with my style, the Saskatoon resident said in a media interview. I wasn t confident. However, as the summer of 2014 proved, there is certainly nothing wrong with his style. The summer was the most successful ever for Saskatchewan Rowing Association athletes. Haver coached Larissa Werbicki, and Caileigh Filmer, who became the first Team Canada crew to train in Saskatchewan since They won the silver medal at the World Junior Rowing Championships and the bronze at the Youth Olympic Games. Werbicki also won the senior women s 1x and senior women s 63 kg 1x at the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association Championship Regatta. In addition, he coached Sierra Bronkhorst, who represented Canada in the W2 at the U23 World Rowing Championships along with national team coach Bent Jensen, have been great coaching influences to him. Perhaps the easiest way to explain Haver s success as a rower and coach is his adaptability to a tricky sport. Even though rowing is normal to me, I know the body movements are totally different, he said. We re sitting on our butts and we re going backwards Humans learn to crawl, then to walk, then to run. Rowing is the same process. Kids want to progress fast. It takes time. He also tries to keep his coaching style light, reminding his athletes that sport is more than a game. My approach is to treat them like I wanted to be treated, Haver said. I hope I don t seem intimidating. I hope they re not thinking, Oh, here s John in his coaching mode. Haver was honoured by Sask Sport Inc. as the 2014 Coach of the Year. He was also named Rowing Canada s Coach of the Year for The satisfaction in being a coach is the same as it was as an athlete, he says. Set a goal. Reach a goal. I see the smile on their face. I see athletes do something they didn t think they could do. What they learn about themselves is more than rowing. Changing his coaching style was a quick turnaround for Haver, which is nothing new in his career. He began competitive rowing at the age of 12, and by the age of 17 was named Canada s junior rower of the year. He won a bronze medal on the world stage at age 20 and 21. At the age of 23, he won a gold medal at the Pan-Am Games in Brazil. t o Haver also spent four years as an athlete with the Canadian National Team. There was a possibility that he could try to qualify for the Olympics, but Haver decided settle down in Saskatoon with his wife Charlene and begin coaching at the age of 27. Haver s father Bob a founding member of the Saskatoon Rowing Club in

11 Shannon Comerford & Leland Guillemin Fencing Many children are unsure of what their favourite sport is while they re growing up. Shannon Comerford, on the other hand, was hardly on the fence. At the age of eight, Comerford tried fencing and quickly fell in love with the sport. Fencing is the martial art of fighting with blades. JILLIAN GALLAYS, Wrestling 2014 Female Athlete of the Year Finalist My brother was a medieval kind of kid. He loves swords and he got into fencing, she said. As soon as I was able I picked up a foil (one weapon used in fencing), I went with it. For Leland Guillemin, the decision to take up fencing happened less naturally. The following CSCS athletes were honoured through the Sport Awards this year: 2014 Female Athlete of the Year Recipient: Brianne Theisen-Eaton, Humboldt, Athletics-Heptathlon 2014 Male Athlete of the Year Recipient: Mark McMorris, Regina, Snowboard 2014 Youth Female Athlete of the Year Recipient: Tianna Kennett, Manor, Wrestling 2014 Youth Female Athlete of the Year Finalist: Larissa Werbicki, Saskatoon, Rowing 2014 Male Athlete of the Year Finalist: Kelly Wiebe, Swift Current, Athletics 2014 Female Athlete of the Year Finalist: Jillian Gallays, Saskatoon, Wrestling 2014 Female Athlete of the Year Finalist: Kali Christ, Regina, Speed Skating I used to play hockey quite competitive, but injuries forced me to stop playing, he said. I took a couple years off from sports and at the age of 15 my dad suggested I try a fencing club he found in the newspaper. Since day one I fell in love with it and it has been my passion ever since. Both Comerford and Guillemin have utilized the performance services of the Canadian Sports Centre Saskatchewan (CSCS) to help them master an intricate sport. The CSCS services have been everything for me, Guillemin said. They ve allowed me to align myself with the correct professionals to push myself and achieve my athletic goals. I have an amazing dietitian and personal trainer who are extremely crucial to my goals. The Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan offers so many services and athletes are really helped, Comerford said. There s huge support for the athletes here. The benefits of their training through the CSCS is evident in their fencing results. Comerford won awards at the 2003 Under-15 National Championship and Cadet National Championship and won the 2008 Junior National Championship. After a stint from with the Cadet/Junior National Team, Comerford became a member of the Canadian Women s Foil Senior National Team in 2009, and has been a member ever since. The team has won silver at the Pan American Championships every year since she joined. In 2011, the Canadian women s team posted their best-ever result at the World Championships, finishing eighth. They have since beaten their own record with a seventh-place finish in Some highlights of Guillemin s fencing career include winning a national championship and finishing fifth at both a North American Fencing Cup and the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
