ANNUAL REPORT Supporting the Dream

Message from the Chair Supporting the Dream This year we saw the results of the Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan Supporting the Dream of our athletes and coaches who strive to compete at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Saskatchewan sent a fine contingent of athletes and support staff to these Games. These individuals are products of our amateur sport system and we take pride in their accomplishments. This contingent included nine Olympians, seven Paralympians, and nine volunteers. Lisa Franks won two gold medals in wheelchair athletics; Amy Alsop, gold in goalball; Cameron Baerg and Jake Wetzel, silver medals, rowing; Mike Bacon and Allan Semeniuk, silver, wheelchair rugby; and Clayton Gerein, bronze, wheelchair athletics. The CSCS is committed to helping athletes and coaches reach podium performances at international competitions through access to quality support programs and services. The CSCS supported 145 registered athletes and eight sports with regional and developmental training groups in the province. Several other sports are considering the benefits of establishing their own training groups here. Our centre provides a comprehensive range of services for athletes and coaches covering all aspects of life both inside and outside of the sport world. In addition to these top level athletes, we are proud that the CSCS has been able to assist in talent development to other areas of the provincial high performance system, to the la releve (next wave) athletes, so they are best prepared when they ascend to higher levels along the long term athlete development pathway. I encourage you to spend a few moments to review our accomplishments. It has been an exciting year and we look forward to the challenges that await in the coming year. With Regina hosting the Canadian Olympic Congress and the upcoming Jeux Canada Games in Regina this year, amateur sport will most certainly be a highlight for Saskatchewan in our Centennial year. Dale Beck Chair, Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan

The Year in Review ATHLETE SERVICES Athletes utilize services and facilities that are provided by key partners and agencies. Performance Enhancement The CSCS provides many programs and services to support athletes both inside and outside of sport. Based on athletic achievement and carding status, athletes qualify for service at a Podium, Gold, Silver or Bronze level. The Centre had 145 registered athletes, of which 10 were podium (top 3 in the world), 7 gold level, 26 silver level and 102 bronze level. Sport Medicine and Science Programs Each registered athlete is eligible to receive Sport Medicine and Science support services in nutrition, mental training, biomechanics, exercise physiology and sports medicine through a partnership with the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan (SMSCS). The SMSCS has an extensive service provider group with over 50 consultant members who meet the professional educational standards established by Canadian Sport Centres. As well, the SMSCS provided extensive service to Saskatchewan s regional and developmental training groups. The SMSCS fulfilled over 170 requests for service from CSCS athletes and training groups. Following is a breakdown of sport medicine and science expenditures by category and percentage: Biomechanical Analysis - 2% Drug & Supplement Education Program - 3% Exercise Physiology - 23% Mental Training - 26% Sport Medicine - 13% Sport Nutrition - 13% Sport Science Equipment - 20% In addition, there are nine GymFit members who offer complimentary access to fitness facilities, with Level 10 Fitness in Regina being added to the program this year. The other partners are YWCA Saskatoon, University of Saskatchewan Fitness Centre, CBI Fitness Institute Saskatoon, Quantum Fitness Saskatoon, University of Regina Fitness and Lifestyle Centre, YWCA Regina, Athlete Development Regina, and the YM/YWCA in Moose Jaw. Support Services Athletes accessed income tax advice and support, tutoring support, and assistance in developing and producing sponsorship portfolios. This area is of high demand by our CSCS athletes. Promotional items were well received by athletes, coaches and support staff. The items increase the

profile of the CSCS and its athletes when representing the CSCS at special events. Athletes continued to access personal counseling to deal with a variety of issues through the ongoing support of Warren Shepell and the Family Services Network Saskatchewan. Life Services There were 19 workshops hosted this year and a total of 251 athletes, coaches and service providers of the CSCS attended. The workshop topics were Fuel for Gold, Public Speaking, Effective Communication, Conflict Resolution, Exercise Physiology, the Olympic Experience, Dealing with Distractions, Stress Management, Media Relations and Nutrition. Future Best Future Best assists athletes who are at a high level of training and competition and have the potential to become a national senior team member. This year 56 athletes received a total of almost $100,000. In the short history of the Future Best program, 186 athletes have received close to $500,000. Currently 29 of these athletes have gone on to become carded, including three Olympians/ Paralympians - Cam Baerg, Viola Yanik and Bruce Heidt. Athletes in the Community Through the Team Sport Speakers Bureau, 62 presentations were made to a total of over 5900 people in 20 different communities throughout Saskatchewan. Some of the topics presented by the athletes included setting goals, being good role models, importance of being active, stress management and the Olympic/Paralympic Games experience. Training sessions were also hosted in Regina and Saskatoon in January Training is held on an annual basis to replenish the speakers pool and develop life skills in athletes. All registered athletes receive information regarding the Career Opportunities Program on a regular basis via . In September, five athletes participated in the Tourism Saskatchewan Golf Tournament for KidSport. This year, 17 CSCS athlete ambassadors hosted corporate tables during the Sask Sport Inc. Saskatchewan Sport Awards. The CSCS continues to work with Saskatchewan companies to develop other partnership opportunities with our athletes. COACH AND ATHLETE EDUCATION The CSCS has a resource centre to assist athletes and coaches receive the most current information. Coaches and athletes have access to a computer station in Regina and Saskatoon. The resource library continues to be developed. TRAINING GROUP PARTNERSHIPS The CSCS has entered into partnerships with qualifying high performance training groups for the purpose of an enhanced training environment. This year the Centre supported the following regional training groups: gymnastics, curling, racquetball, wrestling, fencing, cycling, basketball and soccer. Training group partnerships are considered a core program offered by the CSCS, in partnership with National and Provincial Sport Organizations. Training groups qualify for additional sport medicine and science services, coaching salary support, and all personal and professional seminars and workshops. National Training Camps The Centre provides support services to national teams to hold training camps in the province including media relations, physiotherapy, fitness training. The Team Canada National Women s Goalball Camp and the Women s National Synchronized Swimming Team were supported in their pre- Athens preparations. COACHING SERVICES Apprentice Coach Program This program provides an opportunity to work directly with national team coaches and athletes leading up to and including national team and multi-sport games. The CSCS supported three apprenticeships this year Todd Hinds, wrestling; Leslie Irie, volleyball; and Dean Bertoia, athletics. Todd was named an assistant coach at the 2004 Summer Olympics. The CSCS assisted Todd in attending the U.S.

Nationals to scout the American Olympic team. Leslie worked with the national team and attended the FISU Games and the Pan American Cup. Dean worked with the national team at the North American Central American Caribbean Championships (NACAC). Mentor Coach Program This program provides the opportunity to learn and gain knowledge from national team coaches. This year five individuals took part in the program: Susan Clarke mentored under master cycling coach Yury Kashirin from the Pacific Sport Centre, and accompanied the national team to a World Cup event. Paul Heselwood worked with master wrestling coach Todd Hinds. Tania Harrison mentored under master volleyball coach Melanie Sanford. Adam Ewart mentored under master volleyball coach Brian Gavlas. Chris Buchanan worked with master soccer coach Percy Hoff. This year s recipient of the Petro-Canada Olympic Torch Scholarship was Andre Gronowicz. National Coaching Institute Saskatchewan The CSCS operates the National Coaching Institute SK, which develops world-class coaches who are capable of preparing athletes for podium performances in sport and for life outside of sport. Lisa Thomaidis of basketball and Darin Muma of swimming have both completed classes and are preparing for exit interviews. Those continuing their studies include: Cory Niefer, Olympic style shooting; Jim Holmstrom, athletics; Paul Heselwood, wrestling; and Laura Dewald, lawn bowling. Those beginning their studies include: Andre Gronowicz, canoe; Siobhan McLaughlin, rowing; and Ian Belyea, softball.

FUND DEVELOPMENT To ensure the long-term financial stability of the CSCS, steps were taken to include the Centre as one of the giftgiving options under the Sport Legacy Fund. This program was created by Sask Sport Inc. to encourage those who have benefited from sport or who believe in the value of sport to give something back for current and future generations. We are continuing to review the existing Canadian Sport Centre Podium Program and are working with our partners in the CSC network to ensure sponsorship at the national level. COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING The CSCS publishes an newsletter profiling upcoming events and activities, coaches and athletes, and providing information on the Centre s programs and services. The website was enhanced this year with the addition of the following items: special events; major events including Olympic, Paralympic and world competitions; and French conversion. In June 2004, the Saskatchewan Olympic and Paralympic contingent were invited to attend the Sask Sport Inc. Annual General Meeting, which enabled the provincial sport community to send their best wishes before they left for Athens. In October 2004, Olympic and Paralympic team members were honoured with a tribute at a Saskatchewan Roughrider game including a luncheon, an autograph session, and participation in the SaskEnergy Line Up With the Legends half time show raising over $18,000 for KidSport. A luncheon was also hosted by Tourism Saskatoon in partnership with the CSCS. At these tributes, each Olympic and Paralympic participant received a personalized gift from Sask Sport Inc. and the CSCS on behalf of the Saskatchewan amateur sport community. The CSCS conducted a successful promotion around the sponsorship of the Saskatchewan Sport Awards on March 16, CSCS involvement included: a CSCS athlete ambassador program in which athletes hosted corporate tables; CSCS athlete guest speaker and co-emcee; CSCS sponsorship of the keynote speaker, as well as on-site sponsorship. This event allowed for the promotion and support of the CSCS, in addition to bringing extra awareness to our athletes.
