1 BRITISH GYMNASTICS SELECTION POLICY 25 th Universiade, (World University Games): Women s Artistic Gymnastics (Competition Dates) 2 nd 5 th July 2009 Belgrade, Serbia Format; Competition I: Team competition; 5, 4, 3 Qualification process for CII, All Around, and CIII, Apparatus Finals (2 per Federation); Competition II: All Around Top 24 gymnasts from, (2 per Federation) Competition III: Apparatus finals; Top 8 gymnasts from CI, (2 per federation) Organised in accordance with FIG Technical Regulations and FIG Competition Rules / Code of Points, Introduction 1.1. This is the Policy through which British Gymnastics ( BG ) will select gymnasts and any additional staff for the World University Games A BG Selection Panel; Director (Performance and Technical), Technical Director in consultation with British Universities & Colleges Sport, (BUCS), will select the gymnasts. The Selection Panel will select up to five gymnasts, with the option to name a non-travelling reserve, and to select staff members, ( the Team ), on or before Friday 29 th May Selected Team Members agree not to make any announcement to the media or public in any form (including on any personal websites, social networks etc), regarding their selection until after BUCS / BG have announced the selection on their web site Gymnasts are eligible for consideration provided they are: A British Citizen holding a British passport, and where necessary sanctioned by FIG Executive Committee to compete Be at least 17 years old and less than 28 years of age on 1 st January 2009 (i.e born between 1 January 1981 and 31 December 1991) A BG member in good standing TECH/WAG/UNI GAMES 09-1 Page 1 of 6 28 th April 09

2 BUCS currently applies the following regulations when selecting representative teams to participate in FISU competitions: FISU Regulations and FISU Regulations Students who are officially registered as proceeding towards a degree or diploma at a University or similar institute whose status as a University is recognised by the appropriate national academic authority of their country (e.g. the Department of Education in the UK) Former students of the institutions mentioned in (1.4.4) who have obtained their academic degree/diploma in the year preceding the event i.e. graduated in Be an amateur as defined by the IOC and the appropriate FSI Students studying abroad are eligible for selection provided they satisfy FISU regulations and Students attending courses franchised out from an institution [complying with FISU Regulations (1.4.4)] are eligible for selection providing they also satisfy FISU Regulation BG s Performance Targets are; Individual All Around: Top 24 Apparatus Finals: 2 Finals, 1-2 medals 2. Selection Process 2.1. The selections will be based upon achieving the BG Performance Targets and enhancing Great Britain s performance standards. Performances at the following event(s) will be considered; Saturday/Sunday 9/10th May, BUCS Championships (Newcastle) * Non University gymnasts, eligible to compete under BUCS rules at the World University Games, will need to appear as guests, (hors concour) Saturday/Sunday 23/24th May, British Team Championships (Guildford) Gymnasts who wish to enter this event who are not members of a competing team will need to request permission to enter the event as a guest (hors concour). 3 Gymnasts wishing to be considered for nomination must achieve the following scores at the selection event, Any eligible gymnast who is unable to take part in any of the selection events must register their interest to be selected and provide supporting DVD evidence to the Technical Director in order to be considered. Gymnasts will only be selected if in the opinion of the Technical Director they are able to demonstrate an appropriate level of competitiveness, as determined by final scores and start values in order to make the achievement of the performance targets realistically attainable. As a guideline, an all around score of points will be set as the minimum requirement. Following the final selection event the Technical Director will analyse the results and nominate the gymnasts capable of achieving the targets listed in clause 1.5. The Technical Director will submit the names to the Selection Panel for approval. 2.2 A non-travelling reserve may be nominated by the Technical Director. 2.3 The nominated gymnasts may be expected to undertake additional controls from the selection point until departure to prove their readiness to compete. 2.4 By entering the selection, gymnasts and personal coaches agree not to withhold any information on training fitness, injuries status or illness that could affect training or competition from immediately following the first control, until the point of the Championships in Belgrade. It also assumes that gymnasts have declared any medications they are taking, in particular the use of any restricted medications, and submitted this to the Women s Programme Manager at British Gymnastics. 2.5 Indications from BUCS and British Gymnastics suggest that it is likely that gymnasts will be expected to make either a full, or partial contribution to the costs for the event to compete at the Universiade, (World University Games). If a gymnast enters the selection event, and completes the intention to compete form, it is assumed they are agreeing to the terms of financing their place. 2.6 After the selection announcement, should any gymnast fail to reach performance expectations in training or competition, the Technical Director may recommend deselection to the Selection Panel. 4 2.7 The final allocation of apparatus will be confirmed in Belgrade, prior to competition I, by the Team Coach in consultation with the Technical Director. 3 Injury and Replacement 3.1 Following selection, in the event of there being a doubt over the ability of a gymnast to compete to the best of his ability due to an injury or illness, the following procedure will be adhered to: The gymnast will be referred to BG s designated medical officer to undergo a medical examination to determine his fitness to participate, which at this stage will be determined based on an assessment of whether or not the injury and/or illness is such that the gymnast is physically unable to compete, or is at risk of causing medical harm to himself, or endangering other competitors, officials or spectators If the gymnast passes the medical examination carried out but the medical officer and/or BG have concerns over whether or not the gymnast is able to compete to the best of his ability, due to the underlying injury or illness, the gymnast will be required to undertake BG s designated Fitness Test The Fitness Test will require the gymnast to perform her routine(s) at the level achieved in the control competitions The Technical Director, National Staff or Team Coach will be permitted to conduct the Fitness Test. 3 Team Organisation 3.2 The Team is likely to convene from 28 th June returning 6 th July. 3.3 If a reserve is announced they will be considered as part of the Squad until the date of departure and will be expected to be in a state of routine fitness until the start of World University Games. 3.4 Following the selection events, the Technical Director will nominate a coach to the Selection Panel who is most capable of assisting with the targets listed in Clause 1.5. 5 3.5 All gymnasts of the delegation will be required to sign and comply with BG s Gymnast Agreement. 4 Appeals 3.6 Appeals can only be submitted for a non-selected gymnast on the grounds that this Policy has not been applied. 3.7 Appeals must be lodged in writing to the Chief Executive Officer, (CEO) of British Gymnastics no more than seven days after the official announcement of the team selection. The appeal must clearly identify the grounds for the appeal and provide the necessary evidence upon which it is based. 3.8 The CEO will have the sole discretion to determine whether written evidence and/or evidence made in person will be permissible, and the process for any appeal.
