TORONTO 2015 PARAPAN AM GAMES TICKET PROGRAM GUIDE June 2015

MESSAGE FROM BENOÎT HUOT There is nothing like competing in an international event on home soil in front of screaming Canadian fans. I ve done it once, but that experience will be nothing like the TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games this summer. The TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games will offer the highest level of competition, with more than 1,600 athletes from 28 countries and territories competing in 15 sports. Because every event will be a qualifier for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, every nation will send its very best athletes. These Parapan Am Games are special to me because they re the last big competition I ll have to face my main rivals from Brazil before the Paralympic Games in We don t have the opportunity to race each other very often, so when we meet at the Games this summer, the atmosphere will be electric as everyone fights for the top spot. Seeing a crowd rise for O Canada delivers incredible feelings of pride, accomplishment and patriotism. I can only imagine what the top of the medal podium will feel like when I m hearing this not only at home, but also in the same pool I have been training in for the past year. I am looking forward to sharing this experience with thousands of fellow Canadians this summer. In the lead-up to the Games I have been honoured to serve as a mentor to CIBC s Team Next athletes. Helping these future stars train for this big event has been a wonderful experience and I cannot wait to see what these athletes can do at TORONTO 2015 and in future Olympics. Your support of Canadian athletes this summer at the Parapan Am Games could very well be the difference between fourth place and a medal, between silver and gold, or between qualifying for the Paralympic Games or not. We want to put on a show for you, so please help us put on a show for the world. 2

With 15 sports to choose from, there s something for everyone, and you ll be as close to world-class athletes as at any sport event anywhere. I guarantee it will be a great experience for you and possibly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Canada s athletes. We certainly appreciate your support, and we re working every day to be ready to give you reasons to cheer. See you at the Games! On 7, 2015, Canada will welcome the nations of the Americas to the largest Parapan American Games ever with the cultural spectacle of the Opening Ceremony. Hosted at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium in Toronto, the Opening Ceremony will make lifetime memories for athletes, coaches, officials and fans with the pride of the Parade of Nations. The ceremony will also be the final destination of the torch relay that will unite two torches travelling from opposite ends of the province for the iconic lighting of the Games cauldron. Eight days later, on 15, Toronto will host the biggest party of the Games the Closing Ceremony. With musical performances organized by Live Nation Entertainment the world s largest live entertainment and e-commerce company the conclusion of the Games will be a great show and the beginning of the countdown to the 2019 Parapan Am Games in Lima, Peru. s from $60 Opening Ceremony $60 ($30), $80, $100 Closing Ceremony Non-ticketed Limit: 20 tickets per session Credit: Matthew Murnaghan/ Canadian Paralympic Committee

8 Archery Varsity Stadium (VAR) 299 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON M5S 1W2 Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 10:00 a.m. P M Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 Saturday 15 * P=preliminaries; M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. Archers barely move, but the precision and skill of the athletes and the exacting standards of the competition make archery one of the Games most exciting sports. Either standing or seated in a wheelchair, recurve archers aim at 122-centimetre diameter targets of concentric rings set 70 metres away, and compound archers shoot from 50 metres at an 80-centimetre target. At this level of competition, the real target is the 12.2-centimetre gold centre ring, which some people call the bull s-eye. Hitting that most valuable part of the target is like releasing an arrow from centre field of a baseball diamond and hitting a smartphone at home plate. Archery features men s and women s individual events. The competitors pursue medals in two disciplines, designated according to the kind of bows used. Both recurve and compound bows offer distinctive, futuristic designs and materials that add to the memorable aesthetics of the sport. s from $20 $20 ($10) Limit: 20 tickets per session

9 Athletics CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium (YOR) 230 Ian Macdonald Boulevard, Toronto, ON M3J 1P3 Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 3:00 p.m. M M M M M Saturday 15 * M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. The centrepiece and largest sport of the Parapan Am Games, athletics is comprised of running, wheeling, jumping and throwing. The medals go to the athletes who can run or push their chairs the fastest, who can jump the farthest or highest, and who can throw the greatest distances. Offering a large number of events, disciplines and classifications, the final athletics program could see athletes earn more than 140 gold medals at the newly constructed CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium at York University. The track events covering distances from 100 to 5,000 metres, including the 4 by 100 metre and 4 by 400 metre relay events demand both speed and endurance. The field events include shot put, discus, javelin, long jump, high jump and an event that is unique to athletics, the club throw. Athletes compete according to their functional classification, with some athletes using wheelchairs, prostheses or the guidance of a sighted person. s from $25 Limit: 20 tickets per session Credit: Matthew Murnaghan/ Canadian Paralympic Committee

10 Boccia Abilities Centre (ABL) 55 Gordon Street, Whitby, ON L1N 0J2 Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 9:30 a.m. M 10:00 a.m. P P M Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 Saturday 15 * P=preliminaries; M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. Most people are probably used to seeing boccia in backyards and neighbourhood parks. At the Parapan Am Games, however, boccia moves indoors and the competition goes to an entirely different level. Athletes compete as individuals, pairs or teams to propel the six balls of each end as close as possible to the jack a white ball that is the target for most shots. At the conclusion of each end, the team with the closest ball to the jack counts a point and receives an additional point for every other ball that is closer to the jack than the best-placed of the opponent s shots. Athletes competing in boccia at the Parapan Am Games can use a variety of techniques to propel their shots, including throwing, kicking and assistive devices such as ramps. Each technique requires precise control over speed, direction and spin. s from $20 $20 ($10) Limit: 20 tickets per session Credit: Matthew Murnaghan/ Canadian Paralympic Committee

11 * Start Time Cycling Road Cycling Ontario Place West Channel (OPW) 955 Lake Shore Blvd West, Toronto, ON M6K 3B9 Milton Time Trial Course (MRT) Tremaine Rd/Louis St. Laurent Blvd, Milton, ON Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 9:00 a.m. RM 11:00 a.m. TM RM=road race medals (OPW), TM=individual time trial medals (MRT) For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. Friday 14 Saturday 15 Road cycling brings athletes and spectators to beautiful Milton and Toronto for a wide range of events. Athletes with visual impairments and/or a range of physical impairments compete using four different kinds of equipment: bicycles, handcycles (three-wheelers that athletes ride either kneeling or recumbent), tricycles and tandem bicycles (which visually impaired athletes ride from the back with a sighted pilot steering from the front). Road events are tests of endurance, contested as either road races or time trials. Time trials send the competitors onto the course one at a time at 60-second intervals in a race against the field and the clock. The road race events feature en masse starts and the gold medallist is the first rider to cross the finish line after multiple laps of the course. Women and men compete in both their own separate events and a mixed time trial. s from $20 Ontario Place West Channel (OPW) $20 ($10) Milton Time Trial Course (MRT) Non-ticketed Limit: 20 tickets per session Credit: Matthew Murnaghan/ Canadian Paralympic Committee

12 Cycling Track Cycling Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome (MIV) 2015 Pan Am Boulevard (Tremaine Rd/Louis St. Laurent Blvd) Milton, ON Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 2:00 p.m. M M Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 Saturday 15 * M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. The Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome offers one of the most distinctive spectator experiences of the Games. With a 250-metre wooden oval track featuring two 42-degree banks that all but guarantee high speeds, fans of track cycling will feel like they are right on top of some the best action of the Games. Athletes with a range of physical or visual impairments ride hi-tech, fixed-gear bicycles around the track in a variety of events at various distances. Athletes with physical impairments compete on their own bicycles, while competitors with visual impairments ride the back of tandem bicycles with a sighted pilot steering from the front. Race distances range from 500-metre sprints to four-kilometre tests of speed and endurance. Athletes compete in individual time trials where the best time wins, and pursuit events that are oneon-one duels with the winner advancing to the next round. s from $25 Limit: 20 tickets per session

13 Football 5-a-Side Pan Am/Parapan Am Fields (PAF) University of Toronto, St. George Campus, Hoskins Avenue and Tower Road, Toronto, ON Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 4:00 p.m. P P P P P M Saturday 15 * P=preliminaries; M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. With a small field and a wall that surrounds the playing area to stop the ball from leaving the field of play, fast-paced football 5-a-side with four outfield players and a sighted goalkeeper will remind fans of indoor soccer. The confined space and rebound wall make the action quick and dynamic and all the more impressive because the athletes have visual impairments. The object of the competition is, of course, to score more than the opposing team by kicking the ball into the opponent s goal. The ball, however, is equipped with a noise-making device to help competitors locate it by sound, and each team has guides positioned beside the field of play to offer verbal directions. Athletes on each team wear eyeshades to allow players with different degrees of visual impairment to compete fairly. With short 25-minute halves and the constant action, matches are fast moving and exciting. s from $20 $20 ($10) Limit: 20 tickets per session

14 Football 7-a-Side Pan Am/Parapan Am Fields (PAF) University of Toronto, St. George Campus, Hoskins Avenue and Tower Road, Toronto, ON Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 Saturday 15 9:00 a.m. P P P P P M * P=preliminaries; M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. Football better known in Canada as soccer is the world s most popular sport, and the 7-a-side variation made its debut in 1978 at the Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. Designed originally for athletes with cerebral palsy, the Parapan Am Games competition will also involve athletes with other neurological disorders, including stroke and traumatic brain injury. Compared to football at the Pan Am Games, football 7-a-side with six outfield players and a goalkeeper is contested on smaller pitches with smaller goals and smaller teams, but the action is full sized. Some of the rule adaptations make for an up-and-down style of play as players try to control the ball and kick it into the opposing team s goal. With two 30-minute halves and short halftime breaks, the competition is intense and keeps all of the athletes on the pitch involved in the action. s from $20 $20 ($10) Limit: 20 tickets per session

15 Start Time Goalball Mississauga Sports Centre (MIS) 5500 Rose Cherry Place, Mississauga, ON L4Z 4B6 Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 Saturday 15 9:00 a.m. P P P P P 10:00 a.m. P M 6:00 p.m. M * P=preliminaries; M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. One of several Parapan Am sports developed after World War II to help in the rehabilitation of wounded veterans, goalball provides a unique spectator experience. In a vibrant environment like the TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games, sport venues will almost always be loud and boisterous. Most of the time, however, the goalball venue at the Mississauga Sports Centre will be nearly silent except for the sound of the bells inside the ball. Played exclusively by athletes with a visual impairment, and with all athletes wearing eyeshades to allow competitors with varying degrees of vision to compete equally, goalball involves two teams of three facing off on an indoor court, using hearing as their dominant sense. On a surface with tactile lines, the object is to roll the ball into the opposing team s goal. When a team does score, however, the crowd is free to erupt in cheers the players won t mind at all. s from $20 $20 ($10) Limit: 20 tickets per session

16 Judo Abilities Centre (ABL) 55 Gordon Street, Whitby, ON L1N 0J2 Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 10:00 a.m. P P P 2:00 p.m. M 3:30 p.m. M M Saturday 15 * P=preliminaries; M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. The word judo may mean the gentle way, but the athletes the judoka who compete in judo are anything but gentle in this test of strength, reflexes, balance and technique. Developed in Japan in the 19th century, judo is a fighting style built around attempts to throw or hold the opponent. In fact, judoka earn points depending on the quality of moves like throws, armlocks and strangleholds, with the ultimate goal being an ippon an instant victory that comes from perfectly executing an aggressive and decisive move. Judoka at the Parapan Am Games have visual impairments. The bouts and techniques involved are very similar to those on display at the Pan Am Games. Men and women compete separately in a variety of weight classes. s from $20 $20 ($10) Limit: 20 tickets per session

17 Powerlifting Mississauga Sports Centre (MIS) 5500 Rose Cherry Place, Mississauga, ON L4Z 4B6 Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 11:00 a.m. M M M M Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 Saturday 15 * M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. Powerlifting is one of the most universal and compelling sports at any Games. The simple struggle of athletes trying to lift the most weight is one of the purest measures of an athlete s ability, so powerlifting often creates tremendous theatre. Originally contested by athletes with spinal cord injuries, powerlifting at the Parapan Am Games is now open to athletes with other disabilities, all competing from the bench-press position. From there, the referee signals the commencement and the battle between athlete and gravity begins. The lifter brings the weighted bar down to his or her chest, then presses it upwards in an attempt to hold the bar steady with straight arms. Athletes have three attempts to lift each weight and the successful athletes advance to attempt to lift progressively heavier bars. Men and women compete separately and in different weight classes. s from $20 $20 ($10) Limit: 20 tickets per session

18 Sitting Volleyball CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House (PAC) 875 Morningside Avenue, Toronto, ON M1C 0C7 Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 9:00 a.m. P P P M 11:00 a.m. P 3:00 p.m. P P P P P 5:00 p.m. P M Saturday 15 * P=preliminaries; M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. When William Morgan invented volleyball in 1895, his plan was to create a less strenuous alternative to basketball. He would likely be surprised by the athleticism of the competitors in sitting volleyball (which originated in 1956 as a more active form of the German game of sitzball) at the TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games because this sport is certainly no leisurely pursuit. Playing on a smaller court with a lower net than their Pan Am Games colleagues, sitting volleyball athletes are closer together, putting a premium on lightning reflexes. This also makes for a significantly faster-paced game. These athletes display all the skills in digging, passing, setting, hitting and blocking that is required of competition at the highest level. As the teams of six work to keep the ball from landing on their court while trying to force the ball onto their opponent s side of the court, they must keep at least one buttock in contact with the floor at all times. A set is won by the first team to reach 25 points (with a minimum two-point lead), and the match goes to the first team to win three sets. s from $20 $20 ($10) Limit: 20 tickets per session

19 Swimming CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House (PAC) 875 Morningside Avenue, Toronto, ON M1C 0C7 Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 9:00 a.m. P P P P P P P 5:00 p.m. M M M M M M M Saturday 15 * P=preliminaries; M=medals; events and medal sessions are subject to final entry. For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. Always one of the signature events of any multi-sport Games, swimming brings athletes to compete at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House in Scarborough, one of the most significant legacy facilities built for TORONTO Aquatics fans will recognize the four major techniques breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke and freestyle as athletes contest races of 50, 100, 200 and 400 metres in length. Swimmers compete in a variety of classifications with different adaptations to ability. Swimmers can begin races, for example, in the water, or either sitting or standing on the starting platform. Swimmers with visual impairments race in blackened goggles to ensure competitive fairness and also have tappers to provide audible signals that help them prepare to turn or reach for the wall. Most swimming events are individual races, but the sport also features team relays. s from $25 Limit: 20 tickets per session Credit: Matthew Murnaghan/ Canadian Paralympic Committee

20 * Start Time Table Tennis Atos Markham Pan Am/Parapan Am Centre (MAR) 16 Main Street Unionville, Markham, ON L3R 2E4 Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 10:00 a.m. P P M P P M 4:00 p.m. P P P P P=preliminaries; M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. Friday 14 Saturday 15 The lightest ball in sport escapes the basement rec room and arrives at the Games in a fiercely competitive and fast-paced event that is open to athletes with physical impairments competing in either standing or sitting classifications. Part of the Paralympic program since 1960, (para) table tennis inherits almost all of the rules of table tennis, a game that first used books as racquets. Now, table tennis athletes employ high-performance racquets consisting of composite blades covered in hi-tech rubber. Every contest involves rapid-fire returns and precision spins, creating a wide variety of shots from the chop to the loop and from the drop to the smash. Matches are contested as the best-of-five sets, with each set scored to 11 points and the victor needing to win by two. s from $20 $20 ($10) Limit: 20 tickets per session Credit: Matthew Murnaghan/ Canadian Paralympic Committee

21 * Start Time Wheelchair Basketball Ryerson Athletic Centre (RYA) 60 Carlton Street, Toronto, ON M5B 1L1 Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 Saturday 15 8:00 a.m. P P P P P P 8:30 a.m. M 10:30 a.m. P 4:15 p.m. P P P P P P 4:30 p.m. M P=preliminaries; M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. Wheelchair basketball owes its roots to the desire of World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries to become active again. The first documented game was played on November 25, 1946, by a group of veterans in the United States. Wheelchair basketball has been part of the Paralympic program since 1960 and is sure to be one of the most popular sports of the Games. The number of players, the court, the ball and the height of the hoop will all be familiar to basketball fans, as will the scoring with the athletes attempting free throws for one point, regular field goals for two and three-point shots from beyond the painted arc. Wheelchair basketball athletes also move the ball around the court by passing or dribbling, except that holding the ball for more than two pushes on the wheels instead of steps results in a travelling violation. The sport is open to athletes with physical disabilities that prevent them from running, jumping and pivoting. s from $25 Limit: 20 tickets per session Credit: Matthew Murnaghan/ Canadian Paralympic Committee

22 Wheelchair Rugby Mississauga Sports Centre (MIS) 5500 Rose Cherry Place, Mississauga, ON L4Z 4B6 Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 3:30 p.m. P P P 5:00 p.m. P P P 5:30 p.m. M Saturday 15 * P=preliminaries; M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. If you have the opportunity to watch a sport originally called murderball, you should snap up tickets. Invented in Winnipeg, Manitoba, nearly four decades ago as an alternative to wheelchair basketball for athletes with reduced hand and arm function, wheelchair rugby is one of the can t-miss events of the Games. Athletes with limited or no function in both upper and lower limbs work with teammates to score goals by advancing the ball to the opponent s goal line. They carry, pass or dribble the ball a volleyball in what is always a fast-paced and often violent contest. With a limited amount of time to mount an attack and because contact between wheelchairs is permitted by the rules of the game, collisions between wheelchairs are strategic and often fierce. It s a sport of speed and power that offers the kind of intense spectator experience that makes hockey and football so popular. s from $25 Limit: 20 tickets per session

23 Wheelchair Tennis University of Toronto Scarborough Tennis Centre (UTS) Near 131 Old Kingston Road, Toronto, ON M1E 3J5 Start Time Friday 7 Saturday 8 Sunday 9 Monday 10 Tuesday 11 Wednesday 12 Thursday 13 Friday 14 10:00 a.m. P P P P P M M Saturday 15 * P=preliminaries; M=medals For further information, see the detailed schedule beginning on page 37. The wheelchair tennis court, net, scoring and equipment will look perfectly familiar to fans of the sport most famously contested in places like Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows. The only difference here is that the athletes are in wheelchairs and the ball can bounce twice instead of once before a return. With a history dating back to 1976, wheelchair tennis is a long-standing and popular wheelchair sport. Open to athletes who have permanent or substantial loss of function in one or both legs, wheelchair tennis provides all of the tension and excitement of a sport where an entire match can turn on a single point or a single shot, and where the margin between victory and defeat can be the sliver of daylight that turns a perfectly struck winner into a ball called out. s from $20 $20 ($10) Limit: 20 tickets per session Credit: Matthew Murnaghan/ Canadian Paralympic Committee
