6 Long Distance Paths * The Wye Valley Walk: an easy grade continuous walking trail that follows the river valley from Chepstow to Rhayader and continuing to its source near Pumlumon in the hills above Aberystwyth. The 137 mile route criss-crosses the lower border between Wales and England through a wonderful variety of scenery. There are few sections that could be called strenuous as you walk through the dramatic limestone gorges that characterise the Wye valley, through the rolling countryside of Herefordshire and amongst the remote green uplands of Mid-Wales. ** Walking Around the Peak District - 10 days: In 1995 Tom Lawton wrote a book Walking Around the Peak District, a 10 stage long distance walking route through the White and Dark Peaks. I originally led it with the group starting in October 2002 and ending June On the Sunday we had terrible weather above Hathersage which people still talk about. This spawned the idea of walking in the Peak District for a weekend in late November/early December! The +1 (extra circular walk) is the day that I added at the end to go walking upon Kinder Scout, taking in the peat bogs, which I will do again this time. I am doing it the other way round this time, so the people who came before can see the views that were behind them last time. It is a fantastic walk (yes I know I always say that!) which visits the classic Peak District as well as rarely visited places. The distances that we walk are governed by parking places. I am not putting restrictions on it, but be aware that you need to be reasonably fit, not super fit. If you are not sure, come on my walks and find out. You must also be prepared to use your car. Ian Andrews *** The South Bucks Way: A 23 mile linear footpath connecting Coombe Hill in Buckinghamshire, with Denham in Buckinghamshire. Page 6
7 Notes for all walkers with the Group (Revised June 09) The times given in this programme are either for the start of the walk, or when we meet in order to drive to the start. Please arrive 10 minutes before the stated time to allow for changing footwear or organising car sharing. Please ensure you are correctly equipped for the walk bearing in mind the weather and are physically capable of completing the walk. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who, in their opinion, are inadequately equipped or unfit. You should bring some food and drink even if the walk includes a pub or cafe break. For your own and others safety, please abide by the instructions of the walk leader, whose decision is final on any matter. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur. Under 14 year olds must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are permitted except when indicated otherwise in the programme. They must be kept on a lead in appropriate areas, eg in the vicinity of livestock, near a road. Any mess should be disposed of responsibly. Please take your litter home, including banana skins and orange peel. If in doubt on any matter, please do not hesitate to contact the organisers or walk leader in advance. Non-members are welcome to try out two or three walks before taking out membership. Membership forms are available online or from Committee members. Enjoy walking with us. Page 7
8 Coach Trip to Castleton in the Peak District - Sunday 18 July 2010 The cost is 16 per person. The destination for this year s coach trip is Castleton in the heart of the Peak District. (Approximately 2½ hour coach ride) There will be a choice of two circular walks, one of about 11 miles (Leader Ian Andrews) and the other 7¼ miles, (Leader Mike Banshaw). Both walks will cover the same hilly terrain. The walks will take us up the steep but impressive limestone territory of Cave Dale in the White Peak, then across to the Dark Peak and the summit of Mam Tor (the Shivering Mountain) and along the Castleton Ridge to Hollins Cross. We will then continue on to climb Back Tor to the summit of Lose Hill, from where we will descend. This is one of the classic walks of the Peak District. Bring boots or stout walking shoes. Walking poles are recommended. Bring enough food and drink for the day. If the weather is good the views are stunning. If walking is not your thing Castleton has caves to visit, including the Devil's Arse and Blue John, as well as Peveril Castle. If you are not sure and want to know more ring Ian Andrews on Enquires regarding booking/availability - contact Paul Alexander on To minimise administration, acknowledgements of reservations are not automatically sent. If you would like confirmation, please send a Stamped Addressed Envelope or telephone Paul Alexander two weeks after sending your application.
