First draw between the Lady Flames and Sun Devils is slated for 8 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Pacific time) at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. We are extremely grateful to get this time over spring break to train, grow as a team and get better, said Liberty Women s Lacrosse Head Coach Kelly Nangle. We are excited to prepare for two great teams this week. We are hoping to continue to build our momentum as we approach conference play. Liberty, which is off to its best start to a season in program history at 5-2, is coming off a 17-8 win over Butler in its most recent game, last Tuesday. Arizona State currently stands at 5-4 but is looking to snap a two-game losing skid following losses to Oregon and Colorado on Friday and Sunday. LADY FLAMES NEWS AND NOTES Liberty is No. 1 in the nation in caused turnovers per game at The Lady Flames sit atop the Big South non-conference standings with a.714 winning percentage (.714). Defending KEY LIBERTY PLAYERS ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS (5-4) champion High Point is 4-2, followed by Winthrop (5-3), Radford (3-3), Longwood (3-5), Campbell (3-6), Gardner- Webb (2-6) and Presbyterian (2-7). As a team, Liberty is in the top two of the conference in assists per game (No. 22 nationally/no. 1 in Big South, 6.14), shots per game (33.00), save percentage (No. 2,.483), scoring defense (No. 2, 10.71) and scoring margin (No. 2, 1.57) Junior midfielder Brianna McCaffrey currently ranks 23rd in the country in caused turnovers per game (2.17). The Boca Raton, Fla., native is second in program history in draw controls (141) and third in caused turnovers per game (1.30) over the course of her first two-plus seasons. Liberty s top four in points are Carly White (21), Kayla Foster (19), McCaffrey (18) and Michaela Rich. McCaffrey paces the squad with 13 goals, while Foster is Liberty s top distributor with 11 assists (No. 44 in nation). The Lady Flames have seen a drastic improvement in their goalkeeping this season. 2 LADY FLAMES BY THE NUMBERS 1: Libery has one runner-up finish in the Big South Women s Lacrosse Championship (2015). 2: The Lady Flames have featured the last two Big South Women s Lacrosse Freshmen of the Year in Kayla Foster (2016) and Carly White (2017). 3: Liberty finished third in the country a year ago in caused turnovers per game (12.47), placing first in the Big South in the category. 5: Over the last three seasons, five or more Liberty players have received all-conference accolades. Junior goalkeeper Katherine Widrick is the program s active leader with 197. LIBERTY ROSTER CLOSE-UP This year s 26-player roster is comprised of eight freshmen, seven sophomores, eight juniors and three seniors. Senior Lindsey McNamara, redshirt senior Michaela Rich and redshirt junior Faith Wells are serving as team captains for the 2018 season. SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE The Sun Devils Kerri Clayton is the team s top offensive threat, already amassing 30 goals and nine assists in nine games, which featured a seven-goal effort versus Kennesaw State (Feb. 9). Emily Glagolev (14 g, 10 a) and Graci Fulkerson (11 g, 11 a) also pose a viable threat to score and distribute the ball to their teammates. Maddy Hunter is scooping up 3.56 ground balls per game (32 total) to pace the squad. Hunter is also the best in the draw circle for ASU with 49 draw controls and leads the Sun Devils with 18 caused turnovers. Head coach Courtney Martinez Connor s goalkeeping unit is led by Berkeley Bonneau (5-4, GAA, 83 SV,.472 SV Pct.). Bonneau has received over 87 percent of the minutes (472:33) in cage this season for ASU BIG SOUTH OUTLOOK Liberty has been tabbed to finish fourth in the Big South preseason poll for a fourth straight season Big South champion High Point is picked to finish first, followed by Winthrop (T-2), Campbell (T-2), Liberty (No. 4), Radford (No. 5), Longwood (No. 6), Presbyterian (No. 7) and Gardner-Webb (No. 8). Junior attacker Kayla Foster and sophomore midfielder Carly White both garnered inclusion on the Big South Women s Lacrosse Preseason All-Conference squad. Liberty will begin Big South play on March 31 at home against the Presbyterian Blue House. The 2018 Big South Women s Lacrosse Championship will be contested on April 28, May 4 and May 6. SERIES HISTORY Tuesday s meeting between the Lady Flames and Sun Devils will be the first-ever matchup between the two schools. Arizona State is a first-year program, but the Sun Devils already own wins over Kennesaw State, Stetson, Manhattan, Columbia and the Big South s Presbyterian Blue Hose in their inaugural season. JOYAL DIVES INTO TWO SPORTS Lady Flames sophomore Jenna Joyal is competing on the lacrosse team and swimming & diving team (as a diver) at Liberty. LIBERTY NOTES Joyal has enjoyed success in both sports. She is a two-time CCSA Diver of the Week and on Feb. 27, she earned Big South Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career. Joyal currently leads the team with 11 goals in six games RECAP The Lady Flames posted a 6-13 mark, finishing fourth in the Big South with a 4-3 record. They defeated Presbyterian (18-8), Longwood (18-8), Gardner-Webb (21-7) and Radford (13-10) in league play while falling to Campbell, High Point and Winthrop. Their season ended in the Big South Championship semifinals against No. 1 seed High Point. White earned Big South Conference Freshman of the Year honors, giving Liberty the league s top rookie in two straight seasons (Kayla Foster, 2016). White also earned first team all-conference distinction and was joined by Foster (second team), Courtney Brown (second team), Victoria Tickle (second team), Brianna McCaffrey (honorable mention) and Lindsey McNamara (honorable mention). MAKING HISTORY Liberty (5-2) is off to its best seven-game start in program history in Four of Liberty s five wins have come against teams they had never previously beaten: Mercer, East Carolina, Robert Morris and Old Dominion. COACHING CONNECTION Liberty Women s Lacrosse Head Coach Kelly Nangle played her college lacrosse at Mount St. Mary s. Arizona State s head coach, Courtney Martinez Connor, was Nangle s coach at Mount St. Mary s. She recorded 6.47 shots per game (No. 31 in nation). McCaffrey paces the squad with 13 goals, this year. Additionally, she has seen nine of her players named to the VaSID All-State team and a VaSID Rookie of the Year selection (Kayla Foster, 2016). Nangle has also fostered academic success, with four Big South All-Academic honorees and six IWLCA Academic Honor Roll selections. Nangle has also seen three of her players earn inclusion on the Inside Women s Lacrosse All-Rookie team. Nangle collected her first win at the helm of the program on Feb. 21, 2014 when the Lady Flames defeated Elon, 13-9, at the Liberty Lacrosse Field. Prior to coming to Liberty, Nangle spent two seasons at Central Connecticut State, helping the Blue Devils reach new heights during her tenure. She posted a overall record and a 12-6 mark in Northeast Conference action. Nangle guided Central Connecticut State to a program record tying seven victories in 2012, while setting new program standards with five NEC victories and six home wins. She was recognized for her efforts, by being named the 2012 NEC Coach of the Year. In addition, her senior keeper, Erin DeLancey, was selected the NEC Goalkeeper of the Year. In 2013, Nangle s squad finished second in the NEC with a 7-2 conference record. The Blue Devils made their first-ever appearance in the NEC Championship, advancing to the semifinal round. Central Connecticut State posted a 9-9 overall record in 2013, surpassing the previous school record for overall wins. Six of Nangle s players earned All-NEC honors, dramatically increasing the program s number of all-conference honorees. Central Connecticut State had 11 total previous all-conference honorees in program history. Prior to her heading Central Connecticut State, Nangle spent three years as an assistant coach at Rutgers ( ). She oversaw the Scarlet Knights defense, while assisting with the program s recruiting efforts and overseeing the team s academics. Rutgers posted a record during her three seasons in Piscataway, N.J., maintaining a presence in the national rankings each year. The Scarlet Knights defense improved each season, spotlighted by a second-place finish in goals against average in the Big East during her final season with the program (9.06 in 2011). In 2008, Nangle served as the head coach at St. John s Catholic Prep in Frederick, Md. She helped the Vikings increase their win total by four times during her one season, as St. John s Catholic was winless the year prior to her arrival. Two of her players earned all-conference honors, while two additional players received all-county recognition. Nangle, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., played soccer and lacrosse at Mount St. Mary s from and earned her bachelor s degree in business. ASSISTANT COACHES NINA DUNAY Assistant Coach Enters her 3rd season at Liberty. Dunay played at Liberty from and is the program s all-time leader in goals (125) while ranking second in points (175). TORI QUINN Assistant Coach Enters her 1st season at Liberty after a decorated four-year playing career and two-year coaching career at Canisius. LIBERTY LACROSSE FIELD Serving as the home field for the Liberty women s lacrosse program, the Liberty Lacrosse Field opened in Feb The facility has a seating capacity of 750 and features the Shaw Sportexe PowerBlade HP+2.0 Monofilament Synthetic Turf System and has lines for both lacrosse and soccer competition.
