The season opener is set to start at noon at Mercer s Five Star Stadium in Macon, Ga. Both Liberty and Mercer are fairly young lacrosse programs. The Lady Flames are in their ninth season of DI competition, while Mercer is only its fourth year at the NCAA level in The two schools have never met in women s lacrosse. We are excited to kick off the 2018 season against a quality opponent. KEY LIBERTY PLAYERS MERCER BEARS (0-0) LADY FLAMES NEWS AND NOTES Liberty returns 76.4 percent of its scoring (156-of-203) from Brianna McCaffrey (40 goals) and Kayla Foster (32 goals) are the top returning goal scorers. The Lady Flames finished third in the country in caused turnovers per game (12.47) and ground balls per game (23.42) in Liberty lacrosse scored 16 or more goals in five contests, last season. The team went 5-0 in those contests. Foster placed 41st in the nation in assists (33). The Sewickley, Pa., native is already the program s all-time leader in total assists (62) through her first two seasons. Goalkeepers Katherine Widrick and Aubrie Tarris are entering their junior seasons at Liberty. Widrick drew 13 starts, and Tarris started six games, including last year s opener at No. 8 Notre Dame. Liberty scored goals per game in 2017 and yielded per game. The Liberty women s lacrosse program is 2-6 all-time in season openers. 2 LADY FLAMES BY THE NUMBERS 1: Libery has one runner-up finish in the Big South Women s Lacrosse Championship (2015). 2: The Lady Flames have featured the last two Big South Women s Lacrosse Freshmen of the Year in Kayla Foster (2016) and Carly White (2017). 3: Liberty finished third in the country a year ago in caused turnovers per game (12.47), placing first in the Big South in the category. 5: Over the last three seasons, five or more Liberty players have received all-conference accolades. She also garnered inclusion on the Inside Women s Lacrosse All-Rookie team. 52: Katy Pridemore holds the program record for single-season goals with 52, which she accomplished in : Morgan Becker set program record for points in a season with 70 in : Former Lady Flame Kristen Masullo ( ) accumulated 675 career saves. Junior goalkeeper Katherine Widrick is the program s active leader with 197. LIBERTY ROSTER CLOSE-UP Liberty Head Women s Lacrosse Coach Kelly Nangle s 2017 roster features a blend of veteran leadership and youth. The 26-player roster is comprised of eight freshmen, seven sophomores, eight juniors and three seniors. Senior Lindsey McNamara, redshirt senior Michaela Rich and redshirt junior Faith Wells will serve as team captains for the 2018 season. THOUGHTS FROM THE PLAYERS Our team has been preparing for this season since May of last year. Everyone has the mindset of a champion, which has driven every single person on our team to work harder and get better. Not only is our team pushing itself, but the level of competition during preseason has driven the team to collectively reach new heights. Our coaches and trainers have been preparing not only our skills, but our minds and bodies for the start of a brand new era for Liberty Lacrosse. Senior Captain Lindsey McNamara I m most excited to be suiting up with my girls and to be putting into play what we have been working so hard for in the offseason. As we approach Mercer, I definitely feel like we re ready because every day this preseason and in the offseason, we have come ready to practice and put work in to get better. Sophomore Midfielder Hannah Quast 2017 RECAP The Lady Flames posted a 6-13 mark, finishing fourth in the Big South with a 4-3 record. They defeated Presbyterian (18-8), Longwood (18-8), Gardner-Webb (21-7) and Radford (13-10) in league play while falling to Campbell, High Point and Winthrop. Their season ended in the Big South Championship semifinals against No. 1 seed High Point. White earned Big South Conference Freshman of the Year honors, giving Liberty the league s top rookie in two straight seasons (Kayla Foster, 2016). White also earned first team all-conference distinction and was joined by Foster (second team), Courtney Brown (second team), Victoria Tickle (second team), Brianna McCaffrey (honorable mention) and Lindsey McNamara (honorable mention). SCOUTING MERCER The Mercer Bears went 13-6 overall and 7-2 in conference in The Bears finished inside the top 15 in the nation in ground balls per game (No. 2, 24.63), assists per game (No. 7, 7.84), points per game (22.53), scoring offense (No. 13, 14.68) and scoring margin (4.53). LIBERTY NOTES Mercer is led by third-year head coach Samantha Eustace. The Bears 34-player roster features 11 seniors, four juniors, eight sophomores and 11 freshmen. Mercer s top four attackers, who all scored 41 or more goals a year ago, are all back for the 2018 season, led by senior midfielder Lindsey Zeltwanger (47 g, 51 a, 98 pts). Zeltwager finished fifth in the nation in assists and 11th in points BIG SOUTH OUTLOOK Liberty has been tabbed to finish fourth in the Big South preseason poll for a fourth straight season Big South champion High Point is picked to finish first, followed by Winthrop (T-2), Campbell (T-2), Liberty (No. 4), Radford (No. 5), Longwood (No. 6), Presbyterian (No. 7) and Gardner-Webb (No. 8). Junior attacker Kayla Foster and sophomore midfielder Carly White both garnered inclusion on the Big South Women s Lacrosse Preseason All-Conference squad. Liberty will begin Big South play on March 31 at home against the Presbyterian Blue House. The 2018 Big South Women s Lacrosse Championship will be contested on April 28, May 4 and May 6. ROAD HISTORY Liberty is looking for a win in its road opener for the second time in program history. The Lady Flames defeated Stetson, 16-3, on Feb. 10, 2013 for the only road opener victory in program history. In 2017, the Lady Flames went 4-7 on the road and 2-6 at home. SEASON OPENER NOTES The Lady Flames are 2-6 all-time in season openers. Those victories came in 2011 (11-10 over Saint Francis (Pa.) ) and 2013 (16-3 over Stetson). Liberty dropped its season opener, 18-2, at No. 8 Notre Dame in However, the team quickly rebounded for a 16-9 victory at Butler, two days later. 2

4 THE NANGLE FILE HEAD COACH Fifth Season as Head Coach at Liberty Alma Mater: Mount St. Mary s, 06 COACHING RECORD Year School Record 2017 Liberty Liberty Liberty Liberty Central Connecticut State Central Connecticut State 7-9 Career Record: Record at Liberty: Big South Record at Liberty: COACHING LEDGER 2014-Present...Liberty (Head Coach) Central Connecticut State (Head Coach) Rutgers (Assistant Coach) HEAD COACH KELLY NANGLE Kelly Nangle was named the second head coach in the history of Liberty s women s lacrosse program in June of Since taking over the fledgling program, Nangle has coached 22 Big South All-Conference team members, two Big South Conference Freshman of the Year (Kayla Foster, 2016, Carly White, 2017) award winners and five Big South All- Tournament Team selections in her time at Liberty. Additionally, she has seen nine of her players named to the VaSID All-State team and a VaSID Rookie of the Year selection (Kayla Foster, 2016). Nangle has also fostered academic success, with four Big South All-Academic honorees and six IWLCA Academic Honor Roll selections. Nangle has also seen three of her players earn inclusion on the Inside Women s Lacrosse All-Rookie team. Nangle collected her first win at the helm of the program on Feb. 21, 2014 when the Lady Flames defeated Elon, 13-9, at the Liberty Lacrosse Field. Prior to coming to Liberty, Nangle spent two seasons at Central Connecticut State, helping the Blue Devils reach new heights during her tenure. She posted a overall record and a 12-6 mark in Northeast Conference action. Nangle guided Central Connecticut State to a program record tying seven victories in 2012, while setting new program standards with five NEC victories and six home wins. She was recognized for her efforts, by being named the 2012 NEC Coach of the Year. In addition, her senior keeper, Erin DeLancey, was selected the NEC Goalkeeper of the Year. In 2013, Nangle s squad finished second in the NEC with a 7-2 conference record. The Blue Devils made their first-ever appearance in the NEC Championship, advancing to the semifinal round. Central Connecticut State posted a 9-9 overall record in 2013, surpassing the previous school record for overall wins. Six of Nangle s players earned All-NEC honors, dramatically increasing the program s number of all-conference honorees. Central Connecticut State had 11 total previous all-conference honorees in program history. Prior to her heading Central Connecticut State, Nangle spent three years as an assistant coach at Rutgers ( ). She oversaw the Scarlet Knights defense, while assisting with the program s recruiting efforts and overseeing the team s academics. Rutgers posted a record during her three seasons in Piscataway, N.J., maintaining a presence in the national rankings each year. The Scarlet Knights defense improved each season, spotlighted by a second-place finish in goals against average in the Big East during her final season with the program (9.06 in 2011). In 2008, Nangle served as the head coach at St. John s Catholic Prep in Frederick, Md. She helped the Vikings increase their win total by four times during her one season, as St. John s Catholic was winless the year prior to her arrival. Two of her players earned all-conference honors, while two additional players received all-county recognition. Nangle, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., played soccer and lacrosse at Mount St. Mary s from and earned her bachelor s degree in business. ASSISTANT COACHES NINA DUNAY Assistant Coach Enters her 3rd season at Liberty. Dunay played at Liberty from and is the program s all-time leader in goals (125) while ranking second in points (175).
