UALBANY vs. DUQUESNE The Great Danes and Duquesne are meeting for the fifth time on the gridiron. UAlbany has won three of the previous four contests. RB Larry McCoy rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns, as the Dukes posted a victory last year. Duquesne broke a 7-7 deadlock with a pair of second-quarter touchdowns. In 2009, David McCarty ran for two touchdowns and Justin Gannon scored on a 78-yard punt return in a triumph. The Great Danes started conference play in 2008 with a victory at Rooney Field. UAlbany won a 24-0 decision in the 2002 ECAC Football Classic, as TB Gary Jones ran for 194 yards. LAST GAME - Saint Francis, Oct. 1, 2011 QB Dan Di Lella threw a career-high three touchdowns passes and UAlbany added more than 200 yards on the ground in a victory over Saint Francis, Pa. in the Great Danes Northeast Conference opener on Oct. 1. UAlbany overcame a rash of penalties and rainy conditions to break a 7-7 tie in the late stages of the opening half. Di Lella hooked up with WR Cole King on a 19-yard touchdown and then fired a seven-yard scoring strike to WR Ryan Kirchner on a slant pattern from the left for a 21-7 lead. Saint Francis hung around in the third quarter. Austin Miele s interception and 45-yard return led to one of two field goals by Josh Thiel in the period. The junior placekicker s second kick of 25 yards closed the gap to with 38 seconds left in the stanza. The Great Danes answered with a quick-strike touchdown. as Di Lella delivered a 49-yard TD pass to King. UAlbany s Herb Glass booted a 46-yard field goal and Omar Osbourne added a 4-yard touchdown run. ABOUT UALBANY: In 2010, the Great Danes finished tied for fourth in the Northeast Conference standings. UAlbany (6-5, NEC 4-4) posted a school-record fifth consecutive winning campaign. Head coach Bob Ford is in his 43rd season as a college head coach. Buddy Leathley and Dan Di Lella split time at quarterback last season. TB Andrew Smith was the leading rusher with 724 yards and seven touchdowns. NEC Offensive Rookie of the Year Dillon Romain added 547 yards and six TDs on the ground. WR Ryan Kirchner, a preseason All-NEC candidate, had 50 receptions. Eddie Delaney, a two-time All-NEC defensive end, anchors a veteran line. 2 Conference preseason poll. Head coach Jerry Schmitt has 15 starters returning for a program that is in its fourth season as an NEC member. QB Sean Patterson directs a multiple attack that leads the conference in scoring (33.8 ppg) and is fifth nationally in total yards (470.8 ypg). Patterson has completed 73 of 129 pass attempts for 1,073 yards and 13 touchdowns and adds 269 on the ground. The junior ranks 13th among the FCS national leaders in passing efficiency with a rating and is averaging yards in total offense. Larry McCoy is one of the nation's top running backs and is third nationally at yards per game. He has 15 career 100-yard rushing games, including 153 last week against Bryant. A 2010 second-team All-NEC selection, McCoy is fourth on Duquesne's career chart with 2,793 yards. OT Ron Dunn (6-5, 305) is one of four returning starters on the offensive line. Dunn, an all-conference choice, has started 36 consecutive games, including 26 straight at left tackle. WR Isaac Spragg is the leading receiver with 28 catches for 345 yards and three TDs. Spragg caught just eight passes prior to this year. WR Connor Dixon, who moved from quarterback late in the 2009 campaign, was granted a sixth year by the NCAA just prior to the season. Dixon has 17 receptions for 422 yards and eight TDs. The Michigan State transfer hauled in three scoring passes last week, including the game winner in the fourth quarter. Former Saint Francis head coach Dave Opfar installed a 3-4 defensive scheme last year. The Dukes are second among the FCS leaders in total defense (259.6 ypg) and fifth in passing yards against (128.4 ypg). S Serge Kona and DE Alex Inda (6-2, 252) each earned a spot on the preseason All-NEC squad. Kona, who has 17 tackles, three pass breakups and one interception, switched from linebacker where he was an 11-game starter last year. He also returns kicks and punts. Inda (17 tackles, 3 PBUs) has started the last 26 games on the defensive line. LB Chris Oliver and DT Mike Passodelis, a pair of seniors, lead the team in tackles with 36 and 26, respectively. LB Dorian Bell (6-1, 228), an Ohio State transfer, saw his first action of the season against Bryant and totaled six tackles. Charlie Leventry has made 8-11 field goals and PATs in his first year as a kicker. His three field goals helped the Dukes halt Dayton's 10-game winning streak on Sept. 10. Leventry averages 36.3 yards in his third season as the team's punter. Duquesne football has won two New Year's Day Bowls, including the 1937 Orange Bowl. The university disbanded the program in In 1969, the sport of football returned to the school at the club level. HEAD COACH: Duquesne's Jerry Schmitt is in his seventh season as the school's head coach. He has a career record in 12 seasons at the collegiate level. Schmitt has guided the program to three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles and has twice been named MAAC Coach of the Year. Duquesne's Connor Dixon passed for 194 yards and one TD. The Great Danes started conference play in 2008 with a victory at Rooney Field. QB Vinny Esposito passed for three touchdowns and ran for another score. The Dukes' Connor Dixon threw for 338 yards and two TDs, but UAlbany came up with five turnovers. The Great Danes blanked Duquesne, 24-0, in the 2002 ECAC Football Classic. TB Gary Jones rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns in a postseason game that matched the regular-season champions of the Northeast and Metro Atlantic Athletic (MAAC) conferences. The Dukes, who came into the game with an 11-0 record and were ranked No. 21 nationally, managed just 146 total yards. A strong northwest wind and freezing temperatures greatly influenced the two teams' passing and kicking. UAlbany's Ryan MacLean had two interceptions. He is also fourth on the all-time FCS chart. Ford, the architect of the UAlbany program, has a career record in his 39th varsity season as head coach at the school. Under his direction, the Great Danes have moved from the club level in 1970 to its present NCAA Division I FCS status. Ford, who has a career record at the collegiate level, earned his 200th UAlbany win in a victory against Robert Morris in More than 100 of Bob Ford's assistant coaches are currently working in the professional, college and high school ranks. Dave Campo, a former UAlbany graduate assistant in 1973, is the defensive backs coach of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. Dave Clawson (Bowling Green), Pete Lembo (Ball State) and Kevin Morris (Massachusetts) are in the Mid- American Conference. King became the first UAlbany receiver to reach the 100-yard mark since Oct. 24, He had five catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Osbourne rushed for a career-high 89 yards and scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter. CB Clay Harris, another redshirt frosh, returned three kickoffs for 93 yards and made three tackles. AGAINST IVY LEAGUE: UAlbany and Columbia met for the first time on Sept. 24. The Great Danes previously faced four Ivy League opponents. He hit Ryan Kirchner with a 10-yard touchdown throw at Columbia. The junior flipped a 6-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter against Maine. In 2009, Smith fired a 31-yard TD strike at Monmouth. SEVEN WINS: UAlbany has reached the seven-win mark in eight of 12 seasons at the Division I FCS level. The Great Danes own an record as a NCAA FCS program during that period. UAlbany has registered seven-plus victories 18 times in its history. Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) play arrived in 1999 with membership in the Northeast Conference. UAlbany has won four NEC titles SCHEDULE: UAlbany plays an 11-game schedule. The nonleague slate features Colgate, Maine and Columbia. The Great Danes are on the road to begin the season for the 11th time in their 13 years at the FCS level when they travel to Colgate on Sept. 3. Justin Hassan made 51 tackles and intercepted two passes in his first season as a starting free safety. Leon Saddler (41 tackles, 4 PBUs) became a starter at cornerback. 15 Season Preview UAlbany established a program record with its fifth consecutive winning season one year ago by recording nonleague victories over Maine and Yale en route to a 6-5 campaign. But the Great Danes, who have won four Northeast Conference championships since 2002, were not satisfied after tying for fourth place in the conference standings. We have an opportunity to make a run at the title. This will be a better football team, explains Ford, whose team ended the 2010 schedule by winning its final three games. OFFENSE: The Great Danes return their starting quarterback, top two running backs and leading receiver. Buddy Leathley took over the starting quarterback duties at midseason as a redshirt freshman. Leathley, who has the ability to run and throw, completed 67 of 125 pass attempts for 748 yards and four touchdowns and was third on the team in rushing with 178 yards and two scores. Dan Di Della, a 6 5" senior, took a lot of snaps during the spring with Leathley recovering from off-season surgery. He passed for 720 yards and three TDs last season. The tailback position is loaded with Dillon Romain and Andrew Smith. Romain was the NEC s top offensive rookie after rushing for 547 yards and six touchdowns and averaging 86.7 allpurpose yards per game. Smith, a junior who has more than 1,800 allpurpose yards in his two-year career and has played multiple positions, had a team-high 724 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Drew has done some great things and I am glad he is on our side, Ford states. Dillon is a throwback runner. He is tough and runs to his nose. Ben Miseikis, who rushed for 163 yards and two TDs, has been productive in every situation as a tailback. Tramaine Wilson, who missed most of last season, has breakaway speed. Justin Petersen, the good-hands fullback, and Ben Carl, who can run and catch, add more dimension to the offensive attack. Leading receiver Ryan Kirchner registered the fifth-best single-season total in school history with 50 receptions for 504 yards and one touchdown. He also averaged 10.4 yards per punt return. Kevin Chillis moved into the wide receiver rotation during the final part of his redshirt freshman season. Each player has the passion and talent, plus can catch the ball, Ford says. They have been productive and should have great seasons. Tight end Paul Booker (10 receptions) can stretch the field with decent size and strength. Receivers Jameel Gay, who had 18 catches last year, was baptized as a true freshman, while John Lullen has been a solid collegian over the previous three seasons. For UAlbany to see a significant upgrade, a reshuffled offensive line must improve. Kyle O Keefe is the top returning lineman. A 6-foot-3, 290pound left guard, the senior was slowed by injuries one year ago, but has physical toughness coupled with leadership ability. Keith Peifer (6-5, 280) has moved from tackle to right guard is in his third year as a starter where he will not have to operate in as much space. Chaz Mitchell (6-3, 270) and Jordan Migliore (6-6, 295) have the upper hand at both tackle positions as preseason begins. Mitchell is athletic and moves well. Anthony Bazzoffi (63, 335) has shown progress at left guard, while sophomore tackle Kadeem Williams (6-7, 300) is expected to blossom.
