UALBANY vs. WAGNER The Great Danes and Wagner are meeting for the 15th time on the gridiron. UAlbany has won 13 of the previous 14 contests. In 2010, UAlbany TB Dillon Romain rushed for a career-high 193 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter in a win. Romain, who set the school's single-game freshman rushing mark, rumbled over the left side on a 25-yard TD run to break a deadlock. UAlbany added a 37-yard field goal from Herb Glass with 7:09 left in the period. Wagner QB Nick Doscher passed for 251 yards and ran for a team-high 76 yards. In 2009, QB Vinny Esposito passed for two TDs and ran for two scores in a decision.the Seahawks rallied for a win in the 2000 season, their last win in the series. LAST GAME - Central Connecticut State, Oct. 22, 2011 QB Dan Di Lella threw a school-record five touchdown passes and ran for another score in leading UAlbany to a Northeast Conference victory over Central Connecticut State at Arute Field. UAlbany led at halftime, but then exploded for 21 unanswered in the second half. The Great Danes drove 80 yards in 10 plays on their first offensive series. TB Andrew Smith broke free on the right sideline with a 57-yard screen pass to wipe a second-and-21 situation. Di Lella wrapped up the possession with a seven-yard touchdown pass to TE Paul Booker, his fifth of the game to break the program s all-time standard. Di Lella, who threw for a career-high 283 yards on 14-of-22 through the air, and added 75 yards on the ground, called his own number the next time the Great Danes touched the ball. His completed a 29-yard pass to Cole King and followed with a 20-yard scamper to paydirt. DT Andrew Smith ended the scoring spree with a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown and a advantage. UAlbany broke a 7-7 tie in the opening period by scoring on consecutive possessions. Central Connecticut State answered with a 12-play, 71-yard march. QB Gunnar Jespersen finished off the sequence with a one-yard run over right guard. UAlbany retaliated with a 14-play drive for a advantage. Di Lella s seven-yard shovel pass put TB Andrew Smith across the goal line. The Blue Devils came up with an interception that led to Jespersen s 18-yard scoring pass to a Deven Baker. UAlbany regrouped once again with a drive that ate up most of the first-half clock. TB Dillon Romain s nine-yard run on fourth down was a key play. Ryan Kirchner would later haul in Di Lella s pass with two hands in the back of the end zone for an 11-yard score and a 14-point halftime margin. ABOUT UALBANY: In 2010, the Great Danes finished tied for fourth in the Northeast Conference standings. UAlbany (6-5, NEC 4-4) posted a school-record fifth consecutive winning campaign. Head coach Bob Ford is in his 43rd season as a college head coach. Buddy Leathley and Dan Di Lella split time at quarterback last season. TB Andrew Smith was the leading rusher with 724 yards and seven touchdowns. NEC Offensive Rookie of the Year Dillon Romain added 547 yards and six TDs on the ground. Wagner (1-6, NEC 1-3) had opened the season with a 10-point conference win, but injuries have since been an issue. Walt Hameline has 201 career wins and is eighth among active FCS coaches in that category. QB Nick Doscher, who has been battling a shoulder injury, returned to the lineup last week. Doscher has passed for 703 yards and five touchdowns and run for 200 yards and three scores. Doscher, who spent four years in the Kansas City Royals' farm system, was the 2009 NEC Offensive Rookie of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection. He is second in total yards (5,741) and fourth in passing yards (4,100) on Wagner's career charts. QB Matt Misley, a redshirt freshman, made his first start against Georgetown and completed 23 of 43 attempts for 230 yards. RB Dominique Williams is tied for 14th among the nation's rushing leaders at yards per game, plus is 18th in all-purpose yards (143.9 ypg). Williams, who has run for 100-plus eight times in his career, has 752 yards and eight TDs this season. His 180-yard effort against Saint Francis was the most by a Seahawk in four years. TE Joe Sidaras (6-4, 235), a converted quarterback, has 16 receptions for 233 yards. Wagner's defense is tied for 17th nationally in turnover margin (+1.0 per game) and has 18 takeaways. ILB C.O. Prime and SS Jeremiah Brown are the leading tacklers with 52 apiece. Prime was the NEC defensive player of the week in the opener. Brown has made 38 career appearances. OLB Julian Stanford (6-2, 225) earned second-team all-conference honors as a junior. He has 35 tackles, including 11.5 for losses, and 4.5 sacks. The Seahawks have nine Division I FBS transfers on the roster. CB Jarrett Dieudonne, who started his career at Purdue, was the NEC rookie of the week for his efforts on Oct. 8. He has 40 tackles, five pass break-ups and three forced fumbles. Arkansas State transfer Mike Lombardo, a junior linebacker, has made 50 tackles, including 11 last week vs. Duquesne. CB Torian Phillips adds 27 tackles with two interceptions and three PBUs. The Syracuse transfer moved to defense from tailback. HEAD COACH: Wagner's Walt Hameline is in his 31st season as head coach. He has an career record. Hameline is the 35th coach in NCAA history to win 200 games at one school. Hameline, who ranks among active Division I FCS coaches in victories and winning percentage, has led the program to 22 winning campaigns. Under his direction, the Seahawks captured the 1987 Division III national championship, made three NCAA appearances, and has won five ECAC titles. Hameline, who is also the school's director of athletics, was an assistant on Bob Ford's UAlbany staff in He has been inducted into the Utica (N.Y.) Sports Hall of Fame and served as NEC president. In 2008, TB David McCarty rushed for 104 yards and one touchdown and WR Tim Bush caught a pair of scoring passes in a triumph that clinched the NEC title. In 2007, Esposito threw a secondquarter TD pass to break a 3-3 deadlock en route to a victory. McCarty, who ran for 125 yards, added a 14-yard scoring burst later in the period. CB Ross Bertrand's interception led to TB Omar Johnson's 3-yard TD blast in the final quarter. Wagner's Jason Butler rushed for 116 yards. In 2006, the Great Danes posted a 38-0 shutout. OLB Trevor DuPont scored on a 22-yard interception return and UAlbany held the Seahawks to 140 total yards. He is also fourth on the all-time FCS chart. Ford, the architect of the UAlbany program, has a career record in his 39th varsity season as head coach at the school. Under his direction, the Great Danes have moved from the club level in 1970 to its present NCAA Division I FCS status. Ford, who has a career record at the collegiate level, earned his 200th UAlbany win in a victory against Robert Morris in More than 100 of Bob Ford's assistant coaches are currently working in the professional, college and high school ranks. Dave Campo, a former UAlbany graduate assistant in 1973, is the defensive backs coach of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. Dave Clawson (Bowling Green), Pete Lembo (Ball State) and Kevin Morris (Massachusetts) are in the Mid- American Conference. 4 downs. Osbourne rushed for a 89 yards and scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter. CB Clay Harris, another redshirt freshman, returned three kickoffs for 93 yards and made three tackles. OLB Kyle Jordan is one of the team's top tackles with 36 this season. TWO-MINUTE DRILL: UAlbany scored 20 points in a span of one minute and 46 seconds during the third quarter at Columbia. All three touchdowns came off turnovers, including two fumble recoveries. UAlbany downed an Ivy League team for the second straight year. SMITH PASSES: TB Andrew Smith is the only non-quarterback to throw a touchdown pass in UAlbany's Division I FCS history. He hit Ryan Kirchner with a 10-yard touchdown throw at Columbia. The junior flipped a 6-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter against Maine. In 2009, Smith fired a 31-yard TD strike at Monmouth. SEVEN WINS: UAlbany has reached the seven-win mark in eight of 12 seasons at the Division I FCS level. The Great Danes own an record as a NCAA FCS program during that period. UAlbany has registered seven-plus victories 18 times in its history. UAlbany shared the NEC crown with Monmouth in TB Gary Jones ran for 195 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-7 win against Robert Morris in his team's final conference game of the season. PROGRAM HISTORY: UAlbany began its 39th varsity season at Colgate on Sept. 3. UAlbany football started at the club level in 1970, before moving to Division III and varsity status three years later. The Great Danes competed at the Division II level from , and won two Eastern Football Conference titles in that period. Barksdale was later claimed off waivers on Sept. 2, 2007 by the Kansas City Chiefs and placed on their 53-man, opening-day roster. Barksdale became the first to play from UAlbany in an NFL regular-season game on Oct. 7 against Jacksonville. Defensive end Andre Coleman was a member San Diego Chargers' practice squad. Coleman became the second former UAlbany player to appear in a NFL game on Sept. 14, 2009 against Oakland. Linebacker Kurt Campbell, the program's first NFL draft choice, was selected in 2004 by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round. NFL AND OPPONENTS: There were 27 players who played as collegians against UAlbany on National Football League 53-man, opening-day active rosters. GIANTS CAMP: The National Football League's New York Giants have made the University at Albany its summer training camp home since UAlbany has played host to the longest stint of any Giants' training camp, a record-setting 15 straight summers. In 2011, the Giants did not come to the Capital Region due to NFL labor negotiations. The Giants set their all-time attendance mark (46,960) in the summer of 2009.

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME: Four former athletes were enshrined into the UAlbany Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 14, as part of 2011 Homecoming/Fall Festival festivities. 18 Season Preview UAlbany established a program record with its fifth consecutive winning season one year ago by recording nonleague victories over Maine and Yale en route to a 6-5 campaign. But the Great Danes, who have won four Northeast Conference championships since 2002, were not satisfied after tying for fourth place in the conference standings. If you can t run the ball and can t stop the run, you will not be playing in December, offers head coach Bob Ford, the active NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) leader with 247 career victories. We have an opportunity to make a run at the title. This will be a better football team, explains Ford, whose team ended the 2010 schedule by winning its final three games. It s a more experienced group, but I am concerned that we had ten players miss the spring due to injury. For the second year in a row, the NEC champion receives an automatic berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs. OFFENSE: The Great Danes return their starting quarterback, top two running backs and leading receiver. Buddy Leathley took over the starting quarterback duties at midseason as a redshirt freshman. Leathley, who has the ability to run and throw, completed 67 of 125 pass attempts for 748 yards and four touchdowns and was third on the team in rushing with 178 yards and two scores. Dan Di Della, a 6 5" senior, took a lot of snaps during the spring with Leathley recovering from off-season surgery. He passed for 720 yards and three TDs last season. The tailback position is loaded with Dillon Romain and Andrew Smith. Romain was the NEC s top offensive rookie after rushing for 547 yards and six touchdowns and averaging 86.7 allpurpose yards per game. Smith, a junior who has more than 1,800 allpurpose yards in his two-year career and has played multiple positions, had a team-high 724 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Drew has done some great things and I am glad he is on our side, Ford states. Dillon is a throwback runner. He is tough and runs to his nose. Ben Miseikis, who rushed for 163 yards and two TDs, has been productive in every situation as a tailback. Tramaine Wilson, who missed most of last season, has breakaway speed. Justin Petersen, the good-hands fullback, and Ben Carl, who can run and catch, add more dimension to the offensive attack. Leading receiver Ryan Kirchner registered the fifth-best single-season total in school history with 50 receptions for 504 yards and one touchdown. He also averaged 10.4 yards per punt return. Kevin Chillis moved into the wide receiver rotation during the final part of his redshirt freshman season. Each player has the passion and talent, plus can catch the ball, Ford says. They have been productive and should have great seasons. Tight end Paul Booker (10 receptions) can stretch the field with decent size and strength. Receivers Jameel Gay, who had 18 catches last year, was baptized as a true freshman, while John Lullen has been a solid collegian over the previous three seasons. For UAlbany to see a significant upgrade, a reshuffled offensive line must improve. Kyle O Keefe is the top returning lineman. A 6-foot-3, 290pound left guard, the senior was slowed by injuries one year ago, but has physical toughness coupled with leadership ability. Keith Peifer (6-5, 280) has moved from tackle to right guard is in his third year as a starter where he will not have to operate in as much space. Chaz Mitchell (6-3, 270) and Jordan Migliore (6-6, 295) have the upper hand at both tackle positions as preseason begins. Mitchell is athletic and moves well. Anthony Bazzoffi (63, 335) has shown progress at left guard, while sophomore tackle Kadeem Williams (6-7, 300) is expected to blossom. Redshirt freshman Brian Parker has made the switch from tight end. DEFENSE: The Great Danes, who have traditionally been tough to run against, return seven starters on defense. We have experience and enough depth and talent, Ford says. Eddie Delaney (6-6, 250) and Marc Wargo (6-2, 245) are proven talents as defensive ends. Delaney, who plays with one hand, earned second-team all-conference honors for the second time as a junior. He made 41 tackles, including 4.5 for losses. Wargo had 18 tackles and led the team in sacks (3.5). Zach Gallo (6-0, 265) and Ocieka Bakou (6-0, 270) are penciled in as the starting tackles. Gallo, who has been a solid performer, totaled 32 tackles. An agile junior, Bakou (24 tackles) has made the steady incline. Dean Mercuris is capable in a variety of 2010 Northeast Conference Offensive Rookie of the Year Dillon Romain (20). positions. Andrew Smith (6-2, 255) is also versatile and has every physical tool. Dave Plungas and Jon Morgan are back as the starting inside linebackers. Plungas led the team in tackles with 71 as a sophomore. Morgan, who made the successful transition from the outside and could become an allconference type, was second with 54 tackles and scored on a fumble return for the second time during his career. Raymond Dorcely, a 6-foot senior, should start at outside linebacker. Dorcely, who is usually in the right place at the right time, made 26 tackles. Alex Helmer, who improved in the spring, and redshirt freshman Kyle Jordan add depth at the position. The defensive secondary is a veteran unit. We may be strongest at safety, Ford states. There is good experience with athleticism on the front level. Jake Ciccarello, a physical safety, and Justin Hassan, a secondyear starter at free safety, each had 51 tackles and two interceptions. Justininan Mason (21 tackles) will also see time at both safety positions. Leon Saddler, who originally attended C.W. Post and had 41 tackles and four pass break-ups last season, and Duane Harper figure to be the cornerbacks. Kareem Cooper and Randall Extanus (20 tackles, 5 PBUs) are in more prominent roles. KICKING GAME: Both specialists return. Herb Glass, who handles kickoffs and placements, is among the school s all-time scorers with 164 points. He is second in career field goals (28) and has made 86 pointafter attempts. Paul Layton averaged 40.1 yards per punt in his first collegiate season and drilled 12 kicks of 50-plus yards.
