Rodger Wyland, the sports anchor at WNYT-TV and host of WOFX's Big Board Sports Talk, will work as the play-by-play announcer. Zach Bye will serve as an analyst. UALBANY vs. STONY BROOK The Great Danes and Stony Brook are meeting for the 15th time on the gridiron. The Great Danes have won 10 of the previous 14 contests. In the last matchup on Oct. 6, 2007, UAlbany rallied for a victory as PK Jason Fralicker booted a 17-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining. The Seawolves had come back from a 21-6 deficit with 17 unanswered points. A snap over the punter's head resulted in a safety and a SBU lead. The Great Danes put together a 15-play, 79-yard drive for the winning points. TB David McCarty rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Stony Brook won the previous two encounters, including a decision at LaValle Stadium. QB Josh Dudash passed for 236 yards and CB Cory Giddings returned two second-quarter fumbles for scores. In 2005, Stony Brook posted a 7-3 victory in the rain and mud. FS Chris Alceus scored on a 16-yard fumble return. LAST GAME - Sacred Heart, Nov. 19, 2011 QB Dan Di Lella threw four touchdown passes, including two in each half, in leading UAlbany to a victory over Sacred Heart in the season's final regular-season game on Nov. 19. The Great Danes earned a share of the Northeast Conference championship and their first trip to the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs. UAlbany broke a halftime tie by scoring on consecutive possessions in the third quarter. DT Zach Gallo intercepted a short pass meant for RB Sean Bell at the Pioneers' 23-yard line. Di Lella later tossed a 14-yard scoring pass to WR Ryan Kirchner, who slid on one knee in the left end zone to make the catch. The Great Danes followed with a 10-play drive that resulted in Herb Glass' 31-yard field goal and a advantage. TB Andrew Smith's 38-yard scamper moved his team deep into SHU territory. The junior rushed for 135 yards on 23 carries and had 215 all-purpose. Sacred Heart responded with a seven-play, 77-yard march. A pass interference penalty moved the ball to Albany 31. QB Tim Little then delivered a 31-yard TD strike to Sean Kessler on the right sideline. After DE Eddie Delaney camp up with a sack, UAlbany took possession at midfield and drove nine plays to paydirt for a margin. Di Lella ran an option play for a first down at the SHU 24-yard line, before Smith broke free for 11 yards. Di Lella would find Kirchner on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 9:29 to play. The late stages of the game did not come without some anxious moments. The teams combined for a missed goal and three turnovers on four straight possessions. The biggest play came when Little completed a 38-yard pass to Rickey Moore Jr., but UAlbany's Jake Ciccarello stripped the ball and CB Randall Exantus made the recovery in his own red zone with 2:21 remaining. ABOUT UALBANY: In 2010, the Great Danes finished tied for fourth in the Northeast Conference standings. UAlbany (6-5, NEC 4-4) posted a school-record fifth consecutive winning campaign. Head coach Bob Ford is in his 43rd season as a college head coach. Buddy Leathley and Dan Di Lella split time at quarterback last season. TB Andrew Smith was the leading rusher with 724 yards and seven touchdowns. NEC Offensive Rookie of the Year Dillon Romain added 547 yards and six TDs on the ground. WR Ryan Kirchner had 50 receptions. Eddie Delaney, a two-time All-NEC defensive end, anchors a veteran line. Dave Plungas (71) and Jon Morgan (54) led the team in tackles. Stony Brook (8-3, BS 6-0) is ranked No. 22 in the current Sports Network national poll. After opening with three non-league losses, SBU coach Chuck Priore's squad reeled off eight consecutive wins. The offense is dynamic and leads the nation in scoring (39.6 ppg) and is third in rushing (287.4 pg). The Seawolves boast two 1,000-yard rushers in Miguel Maysonet and Brock Jackolski. Each running back came to Stony Brook after Hofstra eliminated its football program and have become first-team all-conference performers. Maysonet is second among the NCAA rushing leaders with 1,485 yards and 15 touchdowns. He ran for 158 yards against Liberty and scored the go-ahead TD. Jackolski is second among active NCAA leaders with 6,007 career all-purpose yards. He is third nationally in that category at yards per game. He has run for 1,229 yards and 13 TDs, plus is third among the FCS leaders in kickoff returns (32.3 avg.) QB Kyle Essington was named the Big South player of the week after throwing three scoring passes vs. Liberty. The California native has passed for 1,435 yards and 16 touchdowns. Jordan Gush and Kevin Norrell are the favorite targets with 35 and 33 receptions, respectively. Norrell came to the program from Washington State and El Camino J.C. Matt Brevi, a second-team All-Big South receiver, has 26 catches for 470 yards and five TDs. Michael Bamiro (6-8, 350) starts at right tackle. His brothers were Stony Brook athletes in football and basketball. The Seawolves are fourth in turnover margin (+1.45) and ninth in rushing yards allowed (95.6 ypg) among the Division I FCS's top defenses. Boston College transfer Dan Mulrooney has 63 tackles and three fumble recoveries in his first season. Jawara Dudley, who was the team's best rookie defender as a freshman, adds 61 tackles and 4.5 sacks. CB Donald Porter is tied for eighth nationally with six interceptions, plus has six pass break-ups. He moved from wide receiver to defense last year. CB Al-Majid Hutchins, a Rutgers transfer, was the team's top tackler with 11 against Liberty. S Dominick Reyes contributes 52 tackles, two fumbles forced, two recoveries and three pass break-ups. PK Wesley Skiffington, a second-team All-Big South pick as a sophomore, has 77 points and has made 8 of 11 field goals and 53 of 55 PATs. HEAD COACH: Stony Brook's Chuck Priore is in his sixth season as head coach. He has a record and a career mark. He has guided to the program to one outright Big South Conference championship and a share of two league titles. He was named the 2009 conference coach of the year. In 2006, Priore led the Seawovles to a tie for second in the Northeast Conference standings in his first year with the program. He previously spent six years at Trinity College, where he led the program to four straight NESCAC championships. Priore, who also worked for UAlbany's Bob Ford as running backs coach for three seasons, was also the offensive coordinator and line coach at Pennsylvania in Priore was a wishbone fullback at UAlbany from and is among the career rushing leaders. Under his direction, the Great Danes have moved from the club level in 1970 to its present NCAA Division I FCS status. Ford, who has a career record at the collegiate level, earned his 200th UAlbany win in a victory against Robert Morris in More than 100 of Bob Ford's assistant coaches are currently working in the professional, college and high school ranks. Dave Campo, a former UAlbany graduate assistant in 1973, is the defensive backs coach of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. Dave Clawson (Bowling Green), Pete Lembo (Ball State) and Kevin Morris (Massachusetts) are in the Mid- American Conference. UAlbany shared the NEC crown with Monmouth in TB Gary Jones ran for 195 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-7 win against Robert Morris in his team's final conference game of the season. 19 Season Preview UAlbany established a program record with its fifth consecutive winning season one year ago by recording nonleague victories over Maine and Yale en route to a 6-5 campaign. But the Great Danes, who have won four Northeast Conference championships since 2002, were not satisfied after tying for fourth place in the conference standings. If you can t run the ball and can t stop the run, you will not be playing in December, offers head coach Bob Ford, the active NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) leader with 247 career victories. We have an opportunity to make a run at the title. This will be a better football team, explains Ford, whose team ended the 2010 schedule by winning its final three games. It s a more experienced group, but I am concerned that we had ten players miss the spring due to injury. For the second year in a row, the NEC champion receives an automatic berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs. OFFENSE: The Great Danes return their starting quarterback, top two running backs and leading receiver. Buddy Leathley took over the starting quarterback duties at midseason as a redshirt freshman. Leathley, who has the ability to run and throw, completed 67 of 125 pass attempts for 748 yards and four touchdowns and was third on the team in rushing with 178 yards and two scores. Dan Di Della, a 6 5" senior, took a lot of snaps during the spring with Leathley recovering from off-season surgery. He passed for 720 yards and three TDs last season. The tailback position is loaded with Dillon Romain and Andrew Smith. Romain was the NEC s top offensive rookie after rushing for 547 yards and six touchdowns and averaging 86.7 allpurpose yards per game. Smith, a junior who has more than 1,800 allpurpose yards in his two-year career and has played multiple positions, had a team-high 724 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Drew has done some great things and I am glad he is on our side, Ford states. Dillon is a throwback runner. He is tough and runs to his nose. Ben Miseikis, who rushed for 163 yards and two TDs, has been productive in every situation as a tailback. Tramaine Wilson, who missed most of last season, has breakaway speed. Justin Petersen, the good-hands fullback, and Ben Carl, who can run and catch, add more dimension to the offensive attack. Leading receiver Ryan Kirchner registered the fifth-best single-season total in school history with 50 receptions for 504 yards and one touchdown. He also averaged 10.4 yards per punt return. Kevin Chillis moved into the wide receiver rotation during the final part of his redshirt freshman season. Each player has the passion and talent, plus can catch the ball, Ford says. They have been productive and should have great seasons. Tight end Paul Booker (10 receptions) can stretch the field with decent size and strength. Receivers Jameel Gay, who had 18 catches last year, was baptized as a true freshman, while John Lullen has been a solid collegian over the previous three seasons. For UAlbany to see a significant upgrade, a reshuffled offensive line must improve. Kyle O Keefe is the top returning lineman. A 6-foot-3, 290pound left guard, the senior was slowed by injuries one year ago, but has physical toughness coupled with leadership ability. Keith Peifer (6-5, 280) has moved from tackle to right guard is in his third year as a starter where he will not have to operate in as much space. Chaz Mitchell (6-3, 270) and Jordan Migliore (6-6, 295) have the upper hand at both tackle positions as preseason begins. Mitchell is athletic and moves well. Anthony Bazzoffi (63, 335) has shown progress at left guard, while sophomore tackle Kadeem Williams (6-7, 300) is expected to blossom. Redshirt freshman Brian Parker has made the switch from tight end. DEFENSE: The Great Danes, who have traditionally been tough to run against, return seven starters on defense. We have experience and enough depth and talent, Ford says. Eddie Delaney (6-6, 250) and Marc Wargo (6-2, 245) are proven talents as defensive ends. Delaney, who plays with one hand, earned second-team all-conference honors for the second time as a junior. He made 41 tackles, including 4.5 for losses. Wargo had 18 tackles and led the team in sacks (3.5). Zach Gallo (6-0, 265) and Ocieka Bakou (6-0, 270) are penciled in as the starting tackles. Gallo, who has been a solid performer, totaled 32 tackles. An agile junior, Bakou (24 tackles) has made the steady incline. Dean Mercuris is capable in a variety of 2010 Northeast Conference Offensive Rookie of the Year Dillon Romain (20). positions. Andrew Smith (6-2, 255) is also versatile and has every physical tool. Dave Plungas and Jon Morgan are back as the starting inside linebackers. Plungas led the team in tackles with 71 as a sophomore. Morgan, who made the successful transition from the outside and could become an allconference type, was second with 54 tackles and scored on a fumble return for the second time during his career. Raymond Dorcely, a 6-foot senior, should start at outside linebacker. Dorcely, who is usually in the right place at the right time, made 26 tackles. Alex Helmer, who improved in the spring, and redshirt freshman Kyle Jordan add depth at the position. The defensive secondary is a veteran unit. We may be strongest at safety, Ford states. There is good experience with athleticism on the front level. Jake Ciccarello, a physical safety, and Justin Hassan, a secondyear starter at free safety, each had 51 tackles and two interceptions. Justininan Mason (21 tackles) will also see time at both safety positions. Leon Saddler, who originally attended C.W. Post and had 41 tackles and four pass break-ups last season, and Duane Harper figure to be the cornerbacks. Kareem Cooper and Randall Extanus (20 tackles, 5 PBUs) are in more prominent roles. KICKING GAME: Both specialists return. Herb Glass, who handles kickoffs and placements, is among the school s all-time scorers with 164 points. He is second in career field goals (28) and has made 86 pointafter attempts. Paul Layton averaged 40.1 yards per punt in his first collegiate season and drilled 12 kicks of 50-plus yards.
