RADIO COVERAGE Fox Sports 980 (WOFX-AM) will again air the entire University at Albany football schedule. Rodger Wyland, the sports anchor at WNYT-TV and host of WOFX's Big Board Sports Talk, will work as the play-by-play announcer. Zach Bye will serve as an analyst. UALBANY vs. BRYANT The Great Danes and Bryant are meeting for the third time on the gridiron. The teams have split the previous two contests. In 2010, TB Jordan Brown rushed for a career-high 200 yards and two touchdowns in leading Bryant to a 24-7 victory. The Bulldogs took a 14-7 halftime lead with a late second-quarter drive that covered 71 yards in nine plays. Brown blasted over right tackle on a one-yard TD run with 52 seconds remaining. Bryant grabbed a 7-0 lead in the opening period. Brown was hit in the backfield on fourth-and-one at the UAlbany 41, but he broke free and up the right sideline to the end zone. The Great Danes drew even on their next possession. QB Buddy Leathley found TB Andrew Smith with a screen pass that turned into a 46-yard scoring play. Bryant's Chris Bird booted a 38-yard field goal for a 17-7 lead in third quarter following a fumble recovery. CB Samad Wagstaff added a 43- yard interception return for a score. In 2009, QB Vinny Esposito passed for a 280 yards and two second-half touchdowns in leading UAlbany to a victory. TB David McCarty added 118 rushing yards. LAST GAME - Wagner, Oct. 29, 2011 TB Andrew Smith rushed for 149 yards and one touchdown and TB Dillon Romain ran for a pair of scores in the second half, as UAlbany posted a 24-0 victory over Wagner on Oct. 29. A driving rain turned into three inches of snow prior to kickoff and covered the field. UAlbany broke open a tight game in the third quarter. The Seahawks marched from near midfield to inside the Great Danes 20-yard line. But DE Eddie Delaney sacked Wagner QB Nick Doscher on third down and Kenny Howard s fourth-down reception was well short of the yard marker. The Great Danes then marched 86 yards in nine plays for a 14-0 lead. Smith hauled in a 15-yard pass for a first down, before exploding over the right side on a 48-yard scamper. Romain ran five straight times to finish off sequence, including a two-yard blast over right guard. The Seahawks mishandled a UAlbany punt midway through the fourth quarter and CB Duane Harper made the recovery. Herb Glass 23-yard field goal gave his team a 17-0 cushion. UAlbany s defense set up another score when ILB Jon Morgan forced a fumble following a completed pass and S Brandon Baylor made a 38-yard return. Romain blasted over right tackle on a three-yard touchdown run with 6:50 remaining. The blizzard forced both offenses to be conservative in the opening half. Doscher, who did not even attempt a pass before the break, had his team on the move during its second possession. But TB Dominique Williams would later fumble and UAlbany DT Zach Gallo made the recovery. Williams, one of the nation s top rushers, finished with 145 yards on 34 attempts. The Great Danes later featured Smith on an eight-play, 45-yard scoring march. He dove over right guard for a oneyard touchdown, his seventh consecutive carry, for a 7-0 lead. ABOUT UALBANY: In 2010, the Great Danes finished tied for fourth in the Northeast Conference standings. UAlbany (6-5, NEC 4-4) posted a school-record fifth consecutive winning campaign. Head coach Bob Ford is in his 43rd season as a college head coach. Buddy Leathley and Dan Di Lella split time at quarterback last season. TB Andrew Smith was the leading rusher with 724 yards and seven touchdowns. NEC Offensive Rookie of the Year Dillon Romain added 547 yards and six TDs on the ground. WR Ryan Kirchner had 50 receptions. Eddie Delaney, a two-time All-NEC defensive end, anchors a veteran line. Dave Plungas (71) and Jon Morgan (54) led the team in tackles. Bryant (5-3, NEC 3-2) is currently tied for third place in the NEC standings. The Bulldogs were picked to finish fifth in the league's preseason poll. Bryant averages 29.4 points and runs a balanced attack that evenly distributes the run and pass. RB Jordan Brown is a Walter Payton Award candidate. He leads the NEC in rushing (163.5 ypg), scoring (13.8 ppg) and all-purpose yards (241.1 ypg). Brown has rushed for 100 or more yards in all eight games this season and scored the gamewinning touchdown with 32 seconds remaining against Robert Morris. A preseason honorable mention All-American, Brown earned firstteam all-conference honors last year. QB Mike Croce is second among the NEC leaders in passing efficiency with a rating and has thrown for 1,087 yards and 12 touchdowns. Croce is in his third year as a starter after transferring from Merrimack College. WR Jordan Harris, who is second among the conference receiving leaders, has 24 catches for 556 yards and five touchdowns. He has more than 1,000 receiving yards. TE Matt Tracey (6-5, 235), a preseason all-league selection, has 31 receptions for 365 yards and six TDs. He is the program's career leader with 17 touchdown catches. Tony Edwards (6-0, 275) was a nine-game starter at center last year. He earned preseason All-NEC recognition. Eight starters return on Bryant's defense. LB Franck Tebou (6-0, 225) is third in the league in tackles at 8.6 per game. Tebou, whose brother Moise was an NFL first-round pick by Philadelphia, has 69 tackles and two fumble recoveries. The Cameroon native has 197 career tackles. LB Paul Hanley adds 60 tackles and 6.5 hits for a loss. DE Jordan Kelly (6-4, 240) is among the conference's sack leaders with four. Kelly, a junior, has made 42 tackles, including eight for losses. CB Samad Wagstaff and FS Max Machado lead the defensive secondary. Wagstaff, who has 12 career interceptions, was a 2010 second-team All-NEC choice. Machado, the 2010 NEC Defensive Rookie of the Year, has 54 tackles and two interceptions. Cornerbacks Michael Johnson (33 tackles, 7 PBUs) and Jeremy Woodson (37 tackles, 2 INTs) have been productive. PK Tom Alberti has connected on 27 of 32 PATs and 2 of 4 field goals. HEAD COACH: Bryant's Marty Fine is in his eighth season as the school's head coach. He has a record. Fine, who owns a career mark, has guided the program to seven wins in five of the last six seasons. At the NCAA Division II level, Fine led the Bulldogs to Northeast-10 Conference championships in 2006 and 2007 and a pair of NCAA appearances. He has a long resume where he was the offensive line coach at Iowa State, Indiana, Colgate and Indiana State. THE SERIES: UAlbany and Bryant are meeting for the third time on the gridiron. He is also fourth on the all-time FCS chart. Ford, the architect of the UAlbany program, has a career record in his 39th varsity season as head coach at the school. Under his direction, the Great Danes have moved from the club level in 1970 to its present NCAA Division I FCS status. Ford, who has a career record at the collegiate level, earned his 200th UAlbany win in a victory against Robert Morris in More than 100 of Bob Ford's assistant coaches are currently working in the professional, college and high school ranks. Dave Campo, a former UAlbany graduate assistant in 1973, is the defensive backs coach of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. Dave Clawson (Bowling Green), Pete Lembo (Ball State) and Kevin Morris (Massachusetts) are in the Mid- American Conference. He passed for a careerhigh 283 yards and accounted for six touchdowns (5 passing, 1 rushing) in a victory over Central Conn. State. Di Lella established the program's single-game record with five touchdown passes. FOR THE DEFENSE: The Great Danes had three defenders reach the 100-career tackle plateau on Sept. 17. ILB Jon Morgan made a career-high 14 tackles to achieve the milestone. S Jake Ciccarello and ILB Dave Plungas also joined the group. FS Justin Hassan became the sixth active defender to reach the mark on Oct. 22. UAlbany previously last ran and passed for more than 200 yards on Nov. 8, 2008 against Robert Morris. LEADER: PK Herb Glass became the program's all-time field goals leader on Sept. 24. Glass, who broke Jason Fralicker's career standard, made a 34-yarder in the second quarter against Columbia. He has 33 career field goals and is first in career PATs (122). REDSHIRTS: WR Cole King and TB Omar Osbourne had solid games as a redshirt freshmen against Saint Francis on Oct. 1. King became the first UAlbany receiver to reach the 100-yard mark since Oct. 24, He had five catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Osbourne rushed for a 89 yards and scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter. CB Clay Harris, another redshirt freshman, returned three kickoffs for 93 yards and made three tackles. OLB Kyle Jordan is one of the team's top tackles with 38 this season. TWO-MINUTE DRILL: UAlbany scored 20 points in a span of one minute and 46 seconds during the third quarter at Columbia. All three touchdowns came off turnovers, including two fumble recoveries. UAlbany downed an Ivy League team for the second straight year. SMITH PASSES: TB Andrew Smith is the only non-quarterback to throw a touchdown pass in UAlbany's Division I FCS history. He hit Ryan Kirchner with a 10-yard touchdown throw at Columbia. The junior flipped a 6-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter against Maine. In 2009, Smith fired a 31-yard TD strike at Monmouth. SEVEN WINS: UAlbany has reached the seven-win mark in eight of 12 seasons at the Division I FCS level. The Great Danes own an record as a NCAA FCS program during that period. UAlbany has registered seven-plus victories 18 times in its history. 18 Season Preview UAlbany established a program record with its fifth consecutive winning season one year ago by recording nonleague victories over Maine and Yale en route to a 6-5 campaign. But the Great Danes, who have won four Northeast Conference championships since 2002, were not satisfied after tying for fourth place in the conference standings. If you can t run the ball and can t stop the run, you will not be playing in December, offers head coach Bob Ford, the active NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) leader with 247 career victories. We have an opportunity to make a run at the title. This will be a better football team, explains Ford, whose team ended the 2010 schedule by winning its final three games. It s a more experienced group, but I am concerned that we had ten players miss the spring due to injury. For the second year in a row, the NEC champion receives an automatic berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs. OFFENSE: The Great Danes return their starting quarterback, top two running backs and leading receiver. Buddy Leathley took over the starting quarterback duties at midseason as a redshirt freshman. Leathley, who has the ability to run and throw, completed 67 of 125 pass attempts for 748 yards and four touchdowns and was third on the team in rushing with 178 yards and two scores. Dan Di Della, a 6 5" senior, took a lot of snaps during the spring with Leathley recovering from off-season surgery. He passed for 720 yards and three TDs last season. The tailback position is loaded with Dillon Romain and Andrew Smith. Romain was the NEC s top offensive rookie after rushing for 547 yards and six touchdowns and averaging 86.7 allpurpose yards per game. Smith, a junior who has more than 1,800 allpurpose yards in his two-year career and has played multiple positions, had a team-high 724 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Drew has done some great things and I am glad he is on our side, Ford states. Dillon is a throwback runner. He is tough and runs to his nose. Ben Miseikis, who rushed for 163 yards and two TDs, has been productive in every situation as a tailback. Tramaine Wilson, who missed most of last season, has breakaway speed. Justin Petersen, the good-hands fullback, and Ben Carl, who can run and catch, add more dimension to the offensive attack. Leading receiver Ryan Kirchner registered the fifth-best single-season total in school history with 50 receptions for 504 yards and one touchdown. He also averaged 10.4 yards per punt return. Kevin Chillis moved into the wide receiver rotation during the final part of his redshirt freshman season. Each player has the passion and talent, plus can catch the ball, Ford says. They have been productive and should have great seasons. Tight end Paul Booker (10 receptions) can stretch the field with decent size and strength. Receivers Jameel Gay, who had 18 catches last year, was baptized as a true freshman, while John Lullen has been a solid collegian over the previous three seasons. For UAlbany to see a significant upgrade, a reshuffled offensive line must improve. Kyle O Keefe is the top returning lineman. A 6-foot-3, 290pound left guard, the senior was slowed by injuries one year ago, but has physical toughness coupled with leadership ability. Keith Peifer (6-5, 280) has moved from tackle to right guard is in his third year as a starter where he will not have to operate in as much space. Chaz Mitchell (6-3, 270) and Jordan Migliore (6-6, 295) have the upper hand at both tackle positions as preseason begins. Mitchell is athletic and moves well. Anthony Bazzoffi (63, 335) has shown progress at left guard, while sophomore tackle Kadeem Williams (6-7, 300) is expected to blossom. Redshirt freshman Brian Parker has made the switch from tight end. DEFENSE: The Great Danes, who have traditionally been tough to run against, return seven starters on defense. We have experience and enough depth and talent, Ford says. Eddie Delaney (6-6, 250) and Marc Wargo (6-2, 245) are proven talents as defensive ends. Delaney, who plays with one hand, earned second-team all-conference honors for the second time as a junior. He made 41 tackles, including 4.5 for losses. Wargo had 18 tackles and led the team in sacks (3.5). Zach Gallo (6-0, 265) and Ocieka Bakou (6-0, 270) are penciled in as the starting tackles. Gallo, who has been a solid performer, totaled 32 tackles. An agile junior, Bakou (24 tackles) has made the steady incline. Dean Mercuris is capable in a variety of 2010 Northeast Conference Offensive Rookie of the Year Dillon Romain (20). positions. Andrew Smith (6-2, 255) is also versatile and has every physical tool. Dave Plungas and Jon Morgan are back as the starting inside linebackers. Plungas led the team in tackles with 71 as a sophomore. Morgan, who made the successful transition from the outside and could become an allconference type, was second with 54 tackles and scored on a fumble return for the second time during his career. Raymond Dorcely, a 6-foot senior, should start at outside linebacker. Dorcely, who is usually in the right place at the right time, made 26 tackles. Alex Helmer, who improved in the spring, and redshirt freshman Kyle Jordan add depth at the position. The defensive secondary is a veteran unit. We may be strongest at safety, Ford states. There is good experience with athleticism on the front level. Jake Ciccarello, a physical safety, and Justin Hassan, a secondyear starter at free safety, each had 51 tackles and two interceptions. Justininan Mason (21 tackles) will also see time at both safety positions. Leon Saddler, who originally attended C.W. Post and had 41 tackles and four pass break-ups last season, and Duane Harper figure to be the cornerbacks. Kareem Cooper and Randall Extanus (20 tackles, 5 PBUs) are in more prominent roles. KICKING GAME: Both specialists return. Herb Glass, who handles kickoffs and placements, is among the school s all-time scorers with 164 points. He is second in career field goals (28) and has made 86 pointafter attempts. Paul Layton averaged 40.1 yards per punt in his first collegiate season and drilled 12 kicks of 50-plus yards.
