UALBANY vs. ROBERT MORRIS The Great Danes and Robert Morris are meeting for the 12th time on the gridiron. UAlbany has won six of the previous 11 contests. In 2009, Garrett Clawson made a 20-yard field goal with no time remaining in leading Robert Morris to a victory. The Great Danes drew even at 10 apiece with 7:58 to play when QB Vinny Esposito threw an 11- yard scoring pass to TE Paul Booker. Robert Morris drove nearly the length of the field for the winning points, holding on to the ball for the final five minutes and 38 seconds. QB Camdin Crouse completed a 22- yard pass and had a third-down throw to keep the series alive. HB Myles Russ rushed for 87 yards on 31 carries. The Great Danes were home for the first time this season after opening with four consecutive road games. UAlbany scored on four of its first five possessions en route to a 24-0 halftime advantage. Di Lella finished a five-play drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to WR John Lullen. The junior then directed his team on a 68-yard march for a 14-0 lead. Romain capped the series with a two-yard blast. Herb Glass booted the first of two field goals, a 45-yarder, after his team took advantage of a short punt. TB Andrew Smith scored on a 17-yard dash in the second period. ABOUT UALBANY: In 2009, the Great Danes finished second in the Northeast Conference standings. UAlbany (7-4, NEC 6-2) had won the conference championship the previous two years. Eight all-conference players graduated off last year's squad. Head coach Bob Ford is in his 42nd season as a college head coach. Andy Sparano, a preseason All-NEC selection, is among four returning starters on the offensive line. Andrew Smith is a triplethreat on offense as a quarterback, tailback and receiver. WR Jason Poore had 26 catches for 243 yards and two touchdowns. Trevor Anderson, a first-team All-NEC defensive tackle, leads a defense that was tough against the run and allowed just over 19 points per game. CB Ross Bertrand has 100-plus career tackles. 2 are off to their best start in Northeast Conference play since Robert Morris (5-1, NEC 4-0) has won five in a row and 10 of its last 11 contests following a victory over Monmouth on Oct. 9. Head coach Joe Walton has 19 returning starters off last year's squad. QB Jeff Sinclair has thrown for 1,219 yards and 14 touchdowns, plus is ranked ninth nationally with a pass efficiency rating. The sophomore has won 10 of 13 games as a starter in RMU's pro-style offense. HB Myles Russ is 13th among the FCS national rushing leaders at yards per game. Russ has three 100-yard games this season and 13 as a collegian. He is the conference's active rushing leader with 3,576 yards and is on pace to top the school's career chart. TE Shadrae King (6-3, 225) earned second-team All-NEC recogntion as a sophomore. He leads the team with 26 catches for 295 yards and five touchdowns. WR Anthony Coleman is first on the squad in allpurpose running yards at per game. He has 13 receptions for 234 yards and two scores and averages 22.0 per kickoff return. The Colonials have all five starters back on the offensive line. LT Carlos Andrade (6-5, 290) and RT Corey Konycki (6-5, 315) are both seniors. Robert Morris once again has solid defensive unit. The Colonials are 16th nationally in rushing defense (103.5 ypg), 22nd in points allowed (20.2 ppg) and 10th in turnover margin (+1.17 pg). WS Michael Landers and CB Rolf Bathold each earned second-team All- NEC honors last season. Landers is tied for 11th among the FCS leaders with four interceptions and has 45 tackles. He is ninth on RMU's career tackles list with 254. Bathold adds 32 tackles and two interceptions. ILB Alex DiMichele leads the defense with 59 tackles and three pass break-ups. He totaled a career-high 19 tackles in a recent win over Saint Francis, Pa. A preseason all-league selection, DiMichele is fourth on the program's career tackles list with 284. ILB Elias Navarro has combined for 44 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles. PK Garrett Clawson, a first-team All-NEC choice last year, has made 21 of 22 PATs and 2 of 4 field goals. He is the program's active leading scorer with 132 career points. Nick Schirtzinger received secondteam all-league honors last year. He is 17th nationally with a 41.5 punting average. The Colonials have won or shared five NEC championships and have a all-time record against conference opponents. HEAD COACH: Robert Morris' Joe Walton is in his 17th season as head coach. He has a record. Walton, who built the RMU program from its foundation, has led the Colonials to a pair of mid-major national championships. A three-time NEC coach of the year, Walton has directed RMU to five conference championships and two ECAC Classic victories. As head coach of the National Football League's New York Jets from , Walton twice led the team to the AFC playoffs. He was also the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive coordinator from Walton played for the Washington Redskins and New York Giants. The Great Danes won a defensive battle in a 16-6 decision at Joe Walton Stadium in S Dave Nicomini returned an interception for a touchdown and PK Jason Fralicker booted three field goals. In 2005, QB Brett Hall reached the end zone on a 2-yard option run with 2:57 remaining in a victory. The Colonials had taken the lead on SE Michael Rogers' 41-yard touchdown reception. He is also sixth on the all-time FCS chart. Ford, the architect of the UAlbany program, has a career record in his 38th varsity season as head coach at the school. Under his direction, the Great Danes have moved from the club level in 1970 to its present NCAA Division I FCS status. Ford, who has a career record at the collegiate level, earned his 200th UAlbany win in a victory against Robert Morris in More than 100 of Bob Ford's assistant coaches are currently working in the professional, college and high school ranks. Dave Campo, a former UAlbany graduate assistant in 1973, is the defensive backs coach of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. Tony Wise, a former NFL assistant, is on the University of Pittsburgh staff. Dave Clawson is in his second season as Bowling Green's head coach. EARLY TRAVELS: UAlbany traveled to four states and nearly 6,000 miles round trip during the first month of the season. The Great Danes played their home opener on Saturday, Oct. 9th against St. Francis, Pa. NEW STATE: The Great Danes played in the state of Texas for the first time against Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 11. UAlbany had previously competed in 16 states. In 2007, UAlbany defeated Central Connecticut State, 49-14, for its third title. TB David McCarty piled up 247 rushing yards and two TDs. UAlbany won the title outright in 2002 with a 19-7 victory over Monmouth. TB Gary Jones rushed for 103 yards and QB Ryan Roeder scored on a 59-yard run in the second quarter. The Great Danes went on to defeat No. 21 Duquesne, 24-0, in the ECAC Football Classic. UAlbany shared the NEC crown with Monmouth in TB Gary Jones ran for 195 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-7 win against Robert Morris in his team's final conference game of the season. NEC CONSISTENCY: UAlbany has won four or more conference games in all 11 seasons as a Northeast Conference member. The Great Danes have captured four NEC titles (2002, 2003, 2007 & 2008). STREAK: UAlbany had its Northeast Conference win streak ended at 18 straight in a loss at Central Conn. UAlbany football started at the club level in 1970, before moving to Division III and varsity status three years later. The Great Danes competed at the Division II level from , and won two Eastern Football Conference titles in that period. Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) play arrived in 1999 with membership in the Northeast Conference. UAlbany has won four NEC titles. HOME WINS: The Great Danes set a school record with a string of 12 consecutive home wins that covered a two-year period. The streak was stopped on Nov. 7, 2009 in a loss to Robert Morris. The nonleague slate features Stephen F. Austin, a program that reached the 2009 NCAA FCS quarterfinals, Maine and Yale. The Great Danes are on the road to begin the season for the tenth time in their 12 years at the FCS level when they travel to Maine on Thursday, Sept. 2. Stephen F. Austin, who shared the 2009 Southland Conference title, will host the Great Danes on Sept. 11 in Nacogdoches, Texas. UAlbany will tangle with an Ivy League program for the first time since 2006 in the matchup with Yale on Oct. 2. Defending Northeast Conference champion Central Connecticut State comes to the Capital Region on Oct. 22. TOP CROWDS: A crowd of 18,118 watched UAlbany play Georgia Southern in the 2009 season opener, the fifth largest in program annals. UAlbany appeared before 22,196 against Delaware the previous year. DEFENSIVE LINE: In addition to Trevor Anderson, UAlbany has four other returning players who saw significant playing time last year. Eddie Delaney (33 tackles), Mike Kelly (26 tackles) and Marc Wargo (13 tackles) are defensive ends. Defensive tackle Zach Gallo had a break-out season with 38 tackles. ALL-STUDY: The Great Danes have 14 returning players who made the 2009 Northeast Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll. P Bobby Woods, OT Vince Gonzales and OG Andrew Stevens were among those to earn academic recognition. Woods was one of three to be voted to the ESPN The Magazine District I All-Academic Football Team. MOST IMPROVED: Offensive lineman Vince Gonzales was chosen the team s most improved player last year. A 6-foot-4, 275-pound left tackle, Gonazles started all 11 games. The Great Danes offense averaged 26.6 points and total yards. TOP LINEMAN: Senior Andy Sparano shared the program s top offensive lineman award last season. Sparano, a three-year letterman, has played both center and right guard during his career. His father, Tony, is the Miami Dolphins head coach. His brother, Tony, Jr., was an all-conference defensive end for UAlbany. He is currently as assistant coach with the United Football League's Hartford Colonials. VETERAN LINE: The Great Danes return four of five starters on the offensive line. Vince Gonzales and Keith Peifer were the regulars at left and right tackle, respectively. Kyle O Keefe, a first-year starter at left guard, and Andy Sparano are also back. Andrew Stevens also has starting experience as an offensive guard and tackle. ON THE CORNER: Cornerback Ross Bertrand is expected to start in the secondary for the third straight season. Bertrand has 105 career tackles with eight pass break-ups and one interception. TOP TARGET: Senior Jason Poore is the top returning receiver after catching 26 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns last season. Poore, at 6'6" and 215 pounds, has 50 career receptions. TRANSFER: Inside linebacker Said Gaida has transferred from Hofstra University after the institution discontinued football following the 2009 season. Gaida played in 32 games and accounted for 82 tackles over the last three seasons. He was a member of the Colonial Athletic Association all-academic team three times. PRESEASON ALL-NEC: The Northeast Conference announced its 2009 preseason all-conference football team in August. UAlbany had two players voted to the squad by the conference s head coaches. Trevor Anderson earned first-team All-NEC recognition one year ago. The defensive tackle totaled 36 tackles and 3.0 sacks. Andy Sparano anchors the offensive line from his center position. A threeyear letterman, Sparano has made 29 career appearances. PHIL STEELE SQUAD: UAlbany's DT Trevor Anderson and DE Eddie Delaney were among five players named to Phil Steele Publication's preseason All-Northeast Conference team. Anderson and Delaney were on the first team. C Andy Sparano, CB Ross Bertrand and PK Herb Glass made the second team. UALBANY CAPTAINS: Defensive end Mike Kelly, outside linebacker Chris Blais, center Andy Sparano and guard Kyle O'Keefe are serving as team captains. Each player is a captain for the first time. BACK FROM INJURY: Outside linebacker Chris Blais missed all of last season due to two separate hand injuries. He fractured his thumb during the preseason in which a pin was surgically placed. After the recovery, Blais broke two metacarpal bones in a separate incident. NCAA RANKINGS: The Great Danes were among the top Division I FCS defensive units in the nation last year. UAlbany ranked 26th in both rushing defense (118.3 ypg) and points allowed (19.4 ppg). The Great Danes were 32nd in rushing offense at yards per game. OVERTIME GAMES: The Great Danes recorded the program's firstever overtime victory in a decision against Hofstra on Sept. 13, TB David McCarty's 7-yard touchdown run decided the outcome. Barksdale became the second UAlbany player to be chosen in the draft. Barksdale was later claimed off waivers on Sept. 2, 2007 by the Kansas City Chiefs and placed on their 53-man, opening-day roster. Barksdale became the first to play from UAlbany in an NFL regular-season game on Oct. 7 against Jacksonville. Defensive end Andre Coleman was a member San Diego Chargers'

6 practice squad. Coleman became the second former UAlbany player to appear in a NFL game on Sept. 14, 2009 against Oakland. Linebacker Kurt Campbell, the program's first NFL draft choice, was selected in 2004 by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round. NFL OPPONENTS: There are currently 24 players who played as collegians against UAlbany on National Football League 53-man active rosters. GIANTS CAMP: The National Football League's New York Giants have made the University at Albany its summer training camp home since UAlbany has played host to the longest stint of any Giants' training camp, a record-setting 15 straight summers. In 2009, the Giants set their all-time attendance mark (46,960) on the UAlbany campus. MARA-TISCH FIELD: The University at Albany dedicated the school's football practice field in honor of Wellington T. 15 Season Preview UAlbany was once again among the Northeast Conference leaders after finishing second in the league standings one year ago. The Great Danes, who have won four NEC titles since 2002, also defeated a national top-20 program for the first time in three years. Head coach Bob Ford, the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) active leader with 241 career victories, has 45 letterwinners back from last year's 7-4 squad. Ford expects to be competitive. "We have enough talent, but it depends on how quickly we put the package together," says Ford, who is faced with replacing 17 seniors. "I feel better about our depth at the cornerback and linebacker positions. Our offensive and defensive lines are solid. The quarterback-tailback situation is wrapped together." Ford continues, "Leadership is an important factor. Several players stepped forward during the spring." The Great Danes, who have won seven or more games in four consecutive seasons, begin the schedule with Maine and NCAA playoff participant Stephen F. Austin. UAlbany also meets Yale for the first time in preparation for the conference schedule. The NEC champion receives an automatic berth in the expanded NCAA FCS playoffs. "The team is very aware of the situation," Ford says. "It's exciting because you now have a chance to advance (in the postseason) like many of the other levels of competition." OFFENSE: The Great Danes return four of five starters on the offensive line for a unit that averaged 26.6 points and total yards. Andy Sparano (5-11, 270) shared the team's top offensive lineman award in his first year as a starter. Sparano, who can play at center and guard, is adept at scanning the front and making the right call or setting the protection. Vince Gonzales (6-4, 275) started all 11 games at left tackle in earning the program's most improved award. Keith Peifer (6-5, 280) and Kyle O'Keefe (6-3, 290) were regulars as juniors at right tackle and left guard, respectively. Andrew Stevens (6-4, 280) also has starting experience, while Matt Faughnan (6-3, 290) and Chaz Mitchell (6-3, 285) have taken snaps in the heat of the action. The Great Danes lost their top passer, an all-conference receiver and the school's career rushing leader. However, quarterback Andrew Smith represents the future after having been used as a triple-threat weapon during his redshirt freshman season. Smith rushed for 379 yards and five touchdowns, threw a scoring pass and caught a pair of TDs. Dan Di Lella (6-5, 225) has game experience. Buddy Leathley, a redshirt freshman, made a move up the two-deep in the spring. In the receiving corps, Jason Poore (6-6, 215) is the top returnee with 26 receptions for 243 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Kirchner, a surehanded sophomore, and John Lullen increased their production with 16 and 14 receptions, respectively. Tight end Paul Booker (6-4, 240) is a rising star who must expand his role. He caught two touchdown passes last year. UAlbany will have new faces in its rushing attack. Fullbacks Ben Carl and Justin Petersen did not have one single carry last season. Tailbacks Tramaine Wilson, Ben Miseikis and freshman Dillon Romain are in the same boat. Wilson ran for 92 yards and one TD in UAlbany's spring game. Romain, a prep school star in the fall of 2009, entered school last January. DEFENSE: The Great Danes were tough against the run and allowed just over 19 points per game. "We have a solid line with decent safeties and a good cornerback," Ford states. Trevor Anderson (6-2, 295) earned first-team All-NEC honors last year and can still elevate his play to another level. Anderson, who has more than 100 career tackles, was second the team in sacks (3.0). Zach Gallo (6-0, 250) had 38 tackles as a defensive tackle. Mike Kelly (6-2, 235), Eddie Delaney (6-6, 245) and Marc Wargo (6-2, 245) are all talented defensive ends. Kelly had 26 tackles in a season interrupted by a leg injury. He had 5.5 sacks the previous year. Delaney, who plays with one hand, made 33 tackles, including six for losses, after receiving second-team all-league recognition in Wargo had 13 tackles and 3.0 sacks as a sophomore. "Anderson and Delaney are the type of players who can make us better by raising their level," Ford offers. "That's when the other team will have to consider ways to block them." All four starting linebackers, including two first-team selections, graduated. Chris Wilk (6-2, 230) and Dave Plungas (6-2, 230) earned quality time at the inside positions. Wilk had 14 tackles and one interception, while Plungas made 17 stops. Hofstra Defensive tackle Trevor Anderson is a Division I FCS All-America candidate. transfer Said Gaida, who has 32 career appearances, and Chris Van Zelfden will also see the field. Jon Morgan (6-2, 210) made the successful transition from outside to inside linebacker in the spring. Morgan, who has strength and vision, had 33 tackles and two fumble recoveries in his first year as a collegian. The Great Danes will have several veteran outside linebackers vying for starting roles. Chris Blais, who missed all of last season with a pair of hand injuries, saw his first time on the outside in the 2008 campaign and made 31 tackles. Raymond Dorcely and Alex Helmer are also available. Ross Bertrand, who has 105 career tackles, will start for the third consecutive season at cornerback. Duane Harper (13 tackles) made the transition from tailback last year. Leon Saddler, who originally attended C.W. Post, and Kareem Cooper have worked their way into more significant roles. Jake Ciccarello, the star of last year's Maine victory, and Justin Hassan appear to have the edge at the safety positions. Ciccarello totaled 30 tackles, two interceptions and three blocked kicks, while Hassan made 16 tackles. Redshirt freshman Justianian Mason and Rutgers transfer Rob Cervini are on the rise. KICKING GAME: A talented group of kickers include Herb Glass, a second-team All-NEC pick. He led the team in scoring with 61 points and made 12 of 18 field goals. Bobby Woods averaged 36.2 yards per punt. Redshirt freshman Paul Layton will challenge.
