XTRA 910 AM Vince Marotta, play-by-play Winners of their last three games and four of their last five, the Arizona State Sun Devils return home for an intrastate showdown with the No. 23/25 Arizona Wildcats Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. ASU s game with the Wildcats will open a three-game homestand for the Sun Devils who turned in their first Pac-10 Conference road sweep since the season with last weekend s wins at UCLA and USC. The Pac-10 leading threegame winning streak marks ASU s first back-to-back victories since the team opened the season with four straight wins, while the Sun Devils had not won three consecutive Pac- 10 games since the season. The Sun Devils will be looking to snap a 14-game losing streak to the Wildcats, while Saturday will mark the 51st matchup between the two teams. The intrastate rivalry with the visitors from Tucson is ASU s longest running series dating back to the season, the first year of the Sun Devil women s basketball program. Arizona State and Arizona bring identical 4-2 conference marks into Saturday s tilt which puts them into a tie with Washington for second in the early Pac-10 standings. The Sun Devils are 12-6 overall, while Arizona fell to 14-4 overall with losses at USC and UCLA last weekend. Probable Starters Pos. Ht. Cl. The Bruins rallied to narrow the gap to three at with 12:56 to play on a lay-up by sophomore Kristee Porter. A basket by junior Michelle Greco with 8:20 remaining gave UCLA its first lead since the early going at ASU answered and took a lead with 6:08 remaining on a lay-in by Carvalho. A basket by UCLA junior Malika Leatham with 3:47 on the clock gave UCLA a lead, but it would prove to be the Bruins last advantage of the contest. Leonard scored the next five points in the game and assisted on a three-pointer by junior Amanda Levens to give the visitors a margin with 2:18 to play. UCLA never got closer than five points the rest of the way. About #23/25 Arizona Arizona saw its seven-game winning streak come to a halt in Los Angeles last weekend, falling at USC on Jan. 18 and at UCLA59-56 in overtime on Jan. 20. The two losses marked the second straight season that Arizona had lost both games in Los Angeles. The Wildcats are 14-4 overall and are tied with ASU and Washington for second place in the Pac-10 standings at 4-2. As a team, the Wildcats lead the Pac-10 in scoring (80.8 ppg), scoring margin (14.9 ppg), free throw percentage (70.5), assists (16.6 apg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (0.86). Individually, five Wildcats are averaging double figures in scoring led by junior forward Elizabeth Pickney at 14.7 points per contest which is good for third in the conference in scoring. Freshman Veranda James paces the club in rebounding at 8.3 per game including 13 in Arizona s loss to UCLA. Comparatively Speaking...ASU...UA Points Per Game Field Goal Percentage Pt. FG Percentage Free Throw Percentage Rebounds Per Game Assists Per Game In the Series Arizona State holds a advantage in the all-time series with Arizona, while the Wildcats have won the last 14 meetings between the two teams. This series is the longest for the Sun Devils and dates back to the season, the first year of varsity women s basketball at Arizona State. Last year, Arizona took both meetings with a decision in Tucson Jan. 30 and a win in Tempe on Feb. 26. This season will mark just the second time in five years that ASU starts the intrastate series in Tempe (on the road in , and ). ASU s last victory in the series against the U of A came during the season when Arizona State swept both games including a decision in Tempe on Feb. 19, 1993 and a win in Tucson on Jan. 23, While the Wildcats have gotten the best of the series in recent years, the Sun Devils dominated it in the early games, winning 18 of the first 20 meetings which included a streak of 16 games that encompassed eight full seasons ( to ). Keeping Em Off the Scoreboard Arizona State ranks third in the Pac-10 Conference and ranks among the best in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 59.3 points per game so far this season. ASU has held six opponents to 50 points or less this season including 47 by Cal on Jan. 6, while four of those teams have managed 45 points or less (with a season-low 39 by South Florida). ASU held then No. 2 Tennessee to just 67 points, 16.4 points short of the Lady Vols season average of Prior to ASU s win at Cal, the last time ASU held a Pac-10 opponent under 50 points was in with a win over Oregon State in Tempe, while 47 is the fewest points for a league opponent since defeating Oregon in Tempe on Jan. 30, Prior to that, ASU had never held a Pac-10 opponent to less than 50 points on the road in the previous 14 years of conference play. Taking Care of the Ball Arizona State is averaging a Pac-10 low 16.3 turnovers per game in which may not sound so good until you consider that the team had 20.5 turnovers per game last season. The Sun Devils turned in a season-low nine turnovers vs. La Salle and has had 16 or less giveaways in nine of the team s 18 games this year (including 13 each vs. Washington and Washington State). The Sun Devils have also won the turnover battle (having fewer turnovers than their opponents) in 16 of 18 games including a advantage over then No. 2 Tennessee and a edge
4 ARIZONA STATE WOMEN S BASKETBALL PAGE 4 at then No. 21/22 Stanford. Last year, the lowest turnover total for the team was 13 in their final game of the season in the WNIT vs. Colorado State. The Sun Devils lead the Pac-10 in turnover margin, forcing 4.61 more turnovers than they commit per game. ASU also stands in second in the league in assist-toturnover ratio at 0.85 (251 assists to 294 turnovers). Senior Natalie Tucker, who leads the team with an average of 3.4 assists per game (seventh in the Pac-10), is third in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.45). Home-Court Advantage With a 6-3 home mark this year, the Sun Devils have turned in an 17-6 mark at home in the last two seasons including an 11-3 mark last year which ranked second on the ASU list for home victories in a season with the 11-1 mark of the team. Last year, the Sun Devils won their first eight home games of the season. Notes From Beyond the Arc Arizona State has knocked down 34.2 percent of its three-pointers (77-225), led by junior Amanda Levens who has met success on 39.5 percent of her attempts. Levens has a team-best 30 three-pointers on the season which is already 10th on ASU s single-season charts. The 5-9 junior ranks fifth in the Pac-10 in three-point field goal percentage and tied for fifth in three-pointers made (1.67 treys per game). Levens drained three treys of the team s eight treys in the team s wins at Hawaii and UCLA, which was one shy of the school single-game record of nine three-pointers made in a contes. Levens also knocked down a career-high 4-of-4 three-pointers in ASU s win over Washington State on Jan. 13. Levens has drained at least one three-pointer in 14 games and more than one in 10 of those contests, while freshman Betsy Boardman has at least one trey in 13 games. Boardman also ranks eighth in the Pac-10 in three-point field goal percentage, draining 36.5 percent of her attempts (19-52). Head Coach Charli Turner Thorne Since Charli Turner Thorne took over the reins of the program in , the Sun Devils have begun a steady climb back to the national prominence that the team enjoyed in the early 1990s. She has improved the team s wins total in her four seasons and guided ASU to four consecutive double-digit win seasons in as many years. In , Turner Thorne led the Sun Devils to a regular-season record and a 7-11 mark in the Pac-10 Conference, both of which marked the school s most victories since Turner Thorne s Sun Devils also earned the team s first postseason appearance in eight seasons, falling to Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo., in the first round of the 2000 Women s National Invitation Tournament. The Sun Devils win over La Salle in the first game of the ASU Holiday Classic on Dec. 1 marked the 90th win of head coach Charli Turner Thorne s coaching career and her 50th while at ASU. She has notched a record in four-plus seasons at Arizona State and was in her three seasons at Northern Arizona. Notes From the Charity Stripe Since shooting just 40.9 percent from the free throw line (9-22) in its season opener vs. Texas-San Antonio, ASU has shot 65.8 percent from the charity stripe since ( ) The team turned in a season-high 80 percent (16-20) from the charity stripe at USC on Jan. 20 Junior Amanda Levens is shooting a team-best 83.7 percent from the free throw line (82-98) which is good for second in the Pac-10 UCLA s Michelle Greco leads the Pac-10 in that category at 89.8 percent but has attempted just half as many free throws as Levens (44-98) Levens has currently drained 15 consecutive free throws over the last three games (last three attempts vs. WSU, 4-4 at UCLA, 8-8 at USC), while earlier this season, she had a streak of 16 consecutive free throws that ended in the Stanford game In the last nine games, ASU has been to the free throw line 266 times (an average of 29.5 free throw attempts per game) and drained 65.4 percent of those attempts ( ). Super Juniors After sitting out last season as Division I transfers, juniors Amanda Levens and Melody Johnson have made themselves right at home this season. The pair is 1-2 in scoring this season and has also been named all-tournament in both of ASU s tournaments this season (Asahi Rainbow Wahine Classic and ASU Holiday Classic) MEDIA INFORMATION Game-Day Services The Arizona State women s basketball media room is located in the west tunnel (Room 6) and is the first door on the right upon entering Wells Fargo Arena.
