The Spiders will have four seniors but no juniors meaning the four sophomores and four freshmen will be relied upon heavily to take this team where it hopes to go. The new team mantra is Embrace the Pace. With a deep stable of guards and experienced post play the Spiders will be moving quickly in its offense. Despite its youth on paper, the Spiders return four sophomores that combined to average 59. minutes per game last year and welcome a freshman class highlighted by threetime state champion guard Alex Parson who started alongside the top recruit in the nation. Parson is the younger sister of senior guard Micaela Parson who enters this season just 8 points shy of becomming the 4th member of the Richmond, point club. Micaela is one of two returning Spiders that handed out over assists last season. Kylie Murphree, who is chasing a historic career assist total of her own, is the other. Murphree already ranks th alltime in program history with 33 assists in her career. She ranked atop the A and 34th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (.33), fourth in assists (9) and sixth in assists per game (4.3). All of those numbers were careerbest marks. She has improved her assist total by at least 4 each season and if that trend continues she will finish second alltime in that category. SHAFER WINS TH With a win over UMass on Feb. 5, 7, head coach Michael Shafer became the first coach in program history to reach the win milestone. He is already the winningest head coach in program history and with win No. is just the seventh coach in Richmond athletic department history to reach that number joining men s basketball coach Chris Mooney and women s tennis coach Mark Wesselink as the only other active Spider coaches with at least wins on his ledger. He also joins Cindy Griffin at Saint Joseph s as the only active A coaches to reach that number at their current institution. The effort defending the three was the best the program has seen since the turn of the century and the team defense is the best it s been since the 89 season. The team was fourth in the A in scoring defense (59.6 ppg) in 56. HINDSCLARKE 3X A ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Freshman Jaide HindsClarke earned a trio of Atlantic Rookie of the Week awards last season, matched only by UMass freshman Haley Leidel for the most among A freshmen. The Westwood, N.J. native was recognized in backtoback weeks (/3, /) then again on Feb. 3 after leading all Spiders in scoring at.5 points per game the week of Feb. 6. She paced the offensive effort at Dayton as the lone Spider to reach doublefigures and followed that up with arguably her most dominant performance of the season, in the clutch no less. She scored all 3 of her points against George Mason in the late third and early fourth quarters, sparking a run that sealed victory for her team. FLIP THE FIELD The Spiders led the league and ranked 68th in the nation in turnover margin (.3), and ranked third in the league turnovers forced per game (5.9). Those numbers correlate to ranking fourth in the A in steals with 37 which ranked just outside the top in the nation. 3

Shafer guided the Spiders to fivestraight WNIT postseason appearances from 93 and again in 5 where the team advanced to the second round. The Spiders were awarded a bye in the Atlantic Tournament after finishing in the top4. Shafer has amassed a 76 record while at Richmond in years. On Jan. 4, 5, he became the winningest women s coach at Richmond when the Spiders defeated UMass for his 67th career triumph. He passed legendary coach Fannie Crenshaw, who guided the Spiders for 35 years. Shafer led Richmond to a 39 mark in, its most wins since 89 and fewest losses since 45. The National Women s Basketball Insider named Shafer one of the nation s top coaches in. Shafer was one of 3 coaches that were recognized. Shafer collected his th win against GW in. He is only one of three coaches at Richmond to eclipse the century mark total. Shafer has led Richmond to win seasons in three of the last seven years and has guided the Spiders to six postseason WNIT appearances in that span. In 89, Shafer posted the most successful season in his tenure, after helping guide the Spiders to a 4 record, a runnerup appearance in the 9 Atlantic Tournament and school s fourth bid to the WNIT. The 4 record marked the most wins since the season and third best overall record in program history. Prior to his time at Richmond, Shafer spent years as an assistant coach at the University of Georgia, serving his last two seasons as the associate head coach. He helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to straight NCAA Tournament appearances and four Southeastern Conference championships, three regularseason titles and one tournament title. During his tenure, Georgia posted a 7385 (.76) record and advanced to three NCAA Final Fours, appearing in the 996 championship game. A proven recruiter, he helped Georgia head coach Andy Landers sign five Top freshmen classes and inked the country s fifth best class in 5. Shafer signed five high school AllAmericans while serving his last three years at Georgia as the Lady Bulldogs recruiting coordinator. In addition, Shafer was instrumental in the development of current WNBA players Coco Miller, Kelly Miller and Deanna Nolan, a 3 AllStar. Shafer was named as one of the nation s Top assistant women s basketball coaches in an informal internet survey of more than 75 coaches and administrators conducted by womenshoopscoop.com in 3. His numerous contributions to the program were rewarded in June of 3 when he was promoted to associate head coach. A 994 graduate of William & Mary, Shafer earned a spot on the men s basketball team as a walkon. He served as team cocaptain in 994 and served on the StudentAthletic Council during his senior season. The Athens, Ga. native received a bachelor s degree in business administration from William & Mary and earned his master s degree in sport management from Georgia in 997. Shafer, 44, is married to Denise Shafer and they have four children between them: Sophie (), Sumner (), Ellie (3), and Daniel (8). 7
