1 COACHING STAFF adam KRIKORIAN HEAD COACH 11th year Alma Mater: UCLA 97 Career Record: (10 years) There may not be another head coach in any sport throughout the country who has accomplished more than Adam Krikorian in such a short span. In his 16 years with UCLA s water polo program as both a player and a coach, Krikorian has won an unprecedented 14 national titles 10 as a head coach, three as an assistant coach and one as a student-athlete. This spring, Krikorian enters his 11th season as head coach of the UCLA women s water polo team and his ninth alone at the helm. In 1999, he served as interim head coach while Guy Baker coached the U.S. Women s National Team. As women s water polo head coach, Krikorian has guided UCLA to seven national championships (six NCAA titles) and boasts a remarkable.874 winning percentage ( record). Krikorian s women s water polo teams have won 89 percent of their conference matches and have finished with a perfect 12-0 MPSF record twice (2005, 2008) A former standout on the men s water polo team from , Krikorian has earned National Women s Water Polo Coach of the Year honors five times 2001, Krikorian received National Men s Coach of the Year honors in 2004 after having led the UCLA men s program to its eighth NCAA championship. Four of Krikorian s student-athletes have earned ACWPC Player of the Year honors five times Elaine Zivich (2000), Natalie Golda (2005), Kelly Rulon (2006, 2007) and Courtney Mathewson (2008). Over the past four seasons, the UCLA women s water polo program has totaled a mark and has won 46 of 48 conference matches. Krikorian has earned ACWPC Coach of the Year accolades in each of those four seasons. Last spring, Krikorian coached the UCLA women s water polo program to its fourth consecutive NCAA championship and its second undefeated season in the last four years. The Bruins duplicated their 33-0 overall record from the 2005 season and compiled a perfect 12-0 mark in MPSF competition. Six Bruins earned ACWPC All-America honors, and senior Courtney Mathewson captured the coveted Peter J. Cutino Award, an honor bestowed upon the top women s and men s water polo athlete in the nation. Junior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen established the program s single-season saves record, making 237 stops in all 33 contests. In 2007, Krikorian led the women s team to its third consecutive NCAA championship, allowing UCLA to become the first university to win 100 NCAA team championships. The Bruins posted a 28-2 record, earning the MPSF Tournament title before winning the NCAA championship. Kelly Rulon concluded her senior season by breaking UCLA s all-time scoring record (237 goals) before winning the Peter J. Cutino Award. The 2007 campaign marked the end of two illustrious careers under Krikorian s tutelage. Rulon and Emily Feher both concluded their careers at UCLA as four-time All-America selections, earning first-team All-America honors in 2005, 2006 and Both standout student-athletes were named third-team selections as freshmen Rulon in 2003 and Feher in Feher became the first goalkeeper in program history to have competed on three national championship teams. 2 COACHING STAFF Krikorian led the women s team to back-to-back championships in the spring of 2006, as UCLA registered a 29-4 overall record and an 11-1 MPSF mark. Marked by stellar defense, the 2006 Bruins held its opposition to 4.1 goals per game, the lowest average in the nation. Among the most memorable moments in UCLA water polo history, the Bruins defeated top-seeded USC in the hip with a last-second goal by then-sophomore Courtney Mathewson. The start of UCLA s four-peat began in 2005, the last school year in which Krikorian led both the women s and men s water polo teams to NCAA titles. Led by Cutino Award winner Natalie Golda, UCLA rolled to a 33-0 overall record the third undefeated season in NCAA water polo history. Coaching a team that featured three Olympians (Golda, Kelly Rulon and Thalia Munro), Krikorian helped lead the Bruins to a 3-2 victory over Stanford in the 2005 hip. Earlier that school year, Krikorian guided the men s team to its best winning percentage since The 2004 men s squad registered a perfect 8-0 MPSF mark and rattled off an 18-game win streak, which included the NorCal Tournament title and multiple victories over Stanford, California and USC. In 2003, Krikorian and the women s water polo team made their fourth consecutive appearance at the national championship contest and won the third national title in program history. UCLA finished the season with a 24-4 overall mark, including an 8-2 conference record. With an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Bruins cruised past Loyola Marymount in the semifinals before overcoming a 2-0 deficit in the title match to defeat Stanford, 4-3. In just his third year at the helm, Krikorian guided the Bruins to the inaugural NCAA title in 2001 UCLA s second consecutive national championship. Krikorian coached standout seniors Coralie Simmons and Kristin Guerin that spring, just months after having led the men s water polo team to its second straight NCAA title. In 2000, Krikorian led the Bruins to the national championship in just his first season as the program s sole head coach. After having coached alongside Guy Baker in 1999, Krikorian made sure the women s program did not skip a beat. The Bruins posted a 30-5 overall record in 2000 after having finished in Krikorian was promoted to co-head coach prior to the 1999 women s season. The former Bruin standout served as an assistant to the women s team in 1997 and 1998 and to the men s team from 1996 through During the school year, Krikorian served as a student assistant coach as he completed his undergraduate studies, assisting Baker in leading both squads to national championships. As a senior captain in 1995, Krikorian helped lead UCLA to its first men s water polo national championship since Krikorian scored two goals in the Bruins 10-8 win over California in the NCAA championship game. During his senior season, he registered a team-best 31 goals, including one two-pointer, while earning secondteam All-America honors and second-team All-MPSF accolades. A four-year letterwinner, Krikorian captained the team in 1994 and 1995, leading the Bruins to the NCAA Tournament in each of those seasons. He finished his Bruin career with 76 goals, including a pair of two-pointers. Krikorian was named Most Inspirational Player by his teammates in each of his last three seasons. A standout prep athlete at Mountain View High School, Krikorian was a four-year letterwinner in water polo and swimming. As a senior, he scored 113 goals and earned honorable mention All-America accolades. In 1992, he helped lead his team to the National Junior Olympic Championship. Krikorian s older brother, Blake, was on the UCLA water polo team from Krikorian, 33, graduated from UCLA with a psychology degree and a business administration emphasis in June In May 2001, Krikorian married Anicia Mendez, a four-year Bruin letterwinner in tennis who completed her MBA at UCLA. Adam and Anicia reside in Manhattan Beach, Calif., with their two year-old son, Jack. 3 COACHING STAFF matt FLESHER ASSISTANT COACH 3rd year Alma Mater: UCLA 02 Matt Flesher enters his third season serving as an assistant coach on the UCLA women s water polo staff. Flesher, a three-time All-America selection at UCLA from , has helped guide the Bruins to NCAA championships each of the past two seasons, including a perfect 33-0 record in Last spring, Flesher helped lead UCLA to its second undefeated season in the past four years and fourth consecutive NCAA championship. At season s end, six women s water polo players earned All-America distinction and senior Courtney Mathewson captured the Peter J. Cutino Award. In 2007, the Bruins shattered the program record for most goals per game (14.0 gpg), cruising to the program s third consecutive NCAA title. Five Bruins were named All-America selections, and senior Kelly Rulon earned the Peter J. Cutino Award after having established UCLA s career goals total (237). Flesher has also served as an assistant coach with UCLA s men s water polo program the past four seasons. In that span, UCLA has registered a mark. In his four-year career at UCLA, Flesher helped lead the men s water polo program to backto-back NCAA championships (1999, 2000). Flesher was twice honored as an All-MPSF selection before finishing his collegiate career with 81 goals. Prior to returning to Westwood as a coach in 2005, Flesher kept busy within the international water polo ranks. He spent three seasons as a full-time member of the U.S. National Team ( , 2005) and competed professionally for the Greek team Ethnikos-Pireaus in 2003 and Flesher also served as an assistant coach at Corona del Mar High School in 2004, helping lead the SeaKings to a CIF Southern Section Division I semifinal appearance. As a member of the U.S. National Team, Flesher competed at the 2003 World University Games, helping guide Team USA to its qualification for the 2005 Water Polo World Championships. Flesher enjoyed his finest playing season at UCLA as a sophomore in 2000, when he tallied a career-high 32 goals while adding 16 steals and 14 assists. An honorable mention All- America selection that fall, Flesher led UCLA to its second consecutive NCAA championship. Among the most defining moments that season included Flesher scoring the game-winning goal against California in the MPSF Tournament s title match. A newcomer to Westwood in 1999, the Diamond Bar, Calif. native added eight goals to UCLA s 22-3 NCAA title-winning team. Flesher captured third-team All-America accolades as a junior in 2001 after having scored 24 goals, the third-highest total on the team. As a senior in 2002, Flesher again gained third-team All-America honors after having notched 17 goals and served as UCLA s emotional leader and co-captain. Flesher s most noted offensive performance that season came in the third-place match of the MPSF Tournament, when he led all scorers with three goals to lead UCLA past top-ranked Stanford. Flesher earned UCLA s Jack Bariteau Most Inspirational Player Award following the 2002 season. Flesher, 28, earned his degree in political science from UCLA in brandon BROOKS ASSISTANT COACH 3rd year Alma Mater: UCLA 05 Brandon Brooks enters his third season as an assistant coach on the women s water polo staff. As an assistant coach, Brooks focuses his efforts on the development of goalkeepers and oversees their conditioning and strength training program. Over the past two seasons, Brooks work with goalkeepers Emily Feher (2007) and Brittany Fullen (2008) proved instrumental to UCLA s national championship finishes. A junior last spring, Fullen established the program s single-season saves record, totaling 237 stops in the cage. The previous season, Feher recorded a 4.96 goals against average in 25 games before earning first-team All-America honors for the third consecutive season. In 2009, Brooks will continue to focus his efforts on the development of Fullen and sophomore Morgan Ronimus. Fullen played in all 33 matches last spring, logging a 4.73 goals against average as UCLA finished its 2008 campaign with a 33-0 record. Ronimus recovered from a hand injury and played in one contest as a freshman. Brooks has served as an assistant coach on the men s water polo team in 2004 and from As an undergraduate assistant coach with the men s team in 2004, Brooks helped Joe Axelrad develop into one of the nation s premier goalkeepers, leading the Bruins to the NCAA championship that fall. A three-time All-America selection at UCLA and two-time Olympic goalkeeper, Brooks led the Bruins to NCAA championships in 1999 and 2000 as UCLA s goalkeeper, all while becoming UCLA s all-time saves leader with 700 stops. In the summer of 2008, Brooks and former teammate Adam Wright helped lead the U.S. men s national team to a silver medal finish at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Brooks, Wright and former teammate Brett Ormsby competed in the 2004 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. One year earlier, Brooks provided steallar defense as goalkeeper for the U.S. National Team at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Following the 2003 World Championships, Brooks competed at the Pan-American Games, where Team USA took the gold medal and ultimately qualified for the 2004 Olympics. As a freshman in 1999, Brooks totaled 100 saves in over 51 quarters, posting a 5.60 goals against average which currently ranks second all-time in th schol s record books. As a sophomore, he recorded 208 saves in 95 quarters, registering a school-best 4.80 goals against average, a mark which still ranks first today. Coming off back-to-back NCAA championships at the start of the 2001 season, Brooks led UCLA to a No. 5 national ranking as a junior. His 5.96 goals against average that season stands as the fifth-best mark in school history. A senior in 2002, Brooks totaled 227 saves in 79 quarters, earning All-America honors after guiding the Bruins to a third-place finish in the MPSF Tournament. He also earned first-team All-MPSF honors in Brooks, 27, earned his degree in sociology from UCLA in A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Brooks is the oldest of three children and has 22-year-old twin sisters (Nicole and Jessica). adam WRIGHT ASSISTANT COACH 1st year Alma Mater: UCLA 01 Adam Wright begins his first season as an assistant coach on the women s water polo staff. A former standout in the pool at UCLA, where he earned All-America honors his first three seasons ( ), Wright will accompany former Bruin teammates Matt Flesher and Brandon Brooks as assistant coaches. Wright helped lead the UCLA men s water polo team to a 16-8 finish in his first season as an assistant coach on the men s water polo staff. Wright brings nearly 15 years of experience with the U.S. Men s National Team to his alma mater, having most recently helped lead Team USA to a silver-medal finish at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Wright also competed for the U.S. National Team in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, where Team USA finished seventh. A decorated athlete competing for the U.S. National Team, Wright has helped guide Team USA to first-place finishes at the 2007 Pan-American Games (Rio de Janeiro) and the 2005 ASUA Cup (Mexico City). A threat at both ends of the pool with tough defense and good scoring ability, Wright scored four goals at the 2007 FINA World League Super Final and against the 2007 Pan-American Games. He contributed four goals for Team USA in the 2005 FINA World Championships and scored one goal against Russia at the 2004 Olympics. In the professional water polo ranks, Wright joined Bissolati Cremona in 2007 after having played for Civitavecchia in Italy in He also spent time playing for Nuoto Catania (Sicily) in and Dynamo (Moscow) with U.S. teammate Ryan Bailey in Wright helped lead the Bruins to back-to-back NCAA championships in 1999 and As a senior, Wright scored 39 goals on 76 attempts before earning honorable mention All- America accolades and second-team All-MPSF honors. In 1999, Wright finished as the team leader in assists (27) and was second in total points (48) and steals (39). A junior that fall, Wright captured third-team All-America and second-team All-MPSF honors. In his first two seasons in Westwood, Wright scored 43 goals 26 as a freshman and 27 as a sophomore. Wright gained second-team All-America honors in 1998 and was named an honorable mention All-America and All-MPSF selection as a freshman in Wright graduated from UCLA in 2001 with degrees in history and sociology.
