2 2005 SEASON OUTLOOK Senior All-American Jodie Needles led the Bears in scoring last season with 45 goals, including 10 goals in the MPSF Tournament. EXPERIENCE KEY AS BEARS TARGET NCAA TOURNAMENT IN 2005 For the 2005 California women s water polo team, all indicators are pointing to a successful season. The Golden Bears, once a young squad, now feature returning All-Americans Jodie Needles and Elsie Windes, plus a large and talented junior class with contributing sophomores and freshmen. Cal also has the privilege of hosting the 2005 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at Spieker Aquatics Complex at the end of April putting the Bears in a good position to battle for a qualifying spot in the eight-team NCAA Tournament this season. We have several players fighting for spots and will go with a 12-player rotation, said third-year coach Amber Drury-Pinto. It is a credit to the players to have so many people vying for playing time. They have all put in the effort and it has been paying off. It will take everyone working together for us to make the NCAAs. We need to be in the top four in our conference tournament in order to qualify, and that should be a doable situation for us. Two of Cal s premier players are undoubtedly senior Needles and sophomore Windes. Needles is a two-time second team All-American, and last year was first team All-MPSF and a member of the MPSF All- Tournament team. She led the team with 45 goals last season, including 10 goals during the MPSF tournament and three goals in the season-ending victory over San Diego State. Needles is a prolific scorer, entering the season with 106 goals, and one of the nation s top all-around players who has started since her freshman year. Windes was an immediate contributor for the Bears last year as a freshman, earning honorable mention All-America accolades Cal s first true freshman to ever be selected as an honorable mention All-American. She was second team All-MPSF and a member of the MPSF All-Freshman Team after finishing second on the team in scoring with 33 goals. One of the country s best young players, Windes won a gold medal as a member the United States National Team this past January at the FINA World Championships in Perth, Australia. Team captains Cara Chlebicki, Katie Card and Breana Allison will play vital roles for the Bears this season as well. Chlebicki is a senior attacker who scored 13 goals last season, despite suffering a concussion and missing the last third of the year. She has started since her freshman season, has 59 career goals and is one of Cal s top defenders. Card is a junior attacker who is a strong offensive player and one of the team s top swimmers on the counterattack. She scored 17 goals last season, including four in the MPSF Tournament. Allison is considered the Bears top two-meter defender by the Cal coaches and also netted 17 goals last season as a sophomore. Honorable mention All-America as a freshman, Elsie Windes was also second team All-MPSF and a member of the MPSF All- Freshman Team CAL WOMEN S WATER POLO MEDIA GUIDE

3 Cal s stellar junior class includes Allison Gold, Brittani Llorente, Lauren McGee and Holly Farlin. Gold is an outstanding outside shooter who was third on the team in scoring last season with 26 goals. She was the Bears leading scorer in nine matches in 2004 and enters this season with 48 career goals. Llorente is a talented offensive player as well, scoring 17 goals as a sophomore with a pair of goals in the MPSF Tournament. McGee is one of Cal s top offensive threats at the center position, notching goals against Arizona State, UCLA and Hawaii in the 2004 MPSF Tournament, and finishing the year with 11 goals, while Farlin possesses a strong lefthanded shot and is the team s fastest swimmer on the counterattack. Sophomore center Annie Wight will also be counted on for continued production after scoring five goals as a freshman. Shaina Feldman, who tallied 10 goals last season, and sophomore Marnie O Donnell are two additional players in the mix for playing time in the Bears rotation. Besides the long list of returnees who will be critical in Cal s NCAA bid, the Bears bring in talented freshman attacker Molly Hayes. Hayes, who attacker Katie Card comes into the 2005 season with 25 career goals after tallying 17 goals last season. Allison Gold was third on the team with 26 goals last season, leading the Bears in scoring in nine matches. Brittani Llorente is another one of the Bears top returning scorers, netting 17 goals as a sophomore. was the Co-MVP of the Central Coast Section as a senior at St. Francis High School, has impressed the Cal coaching staff with her attitude and ability, and should be a major contributor. Freshmen Vanessa Lindsey, from Upland High School, could step in and help the Bears as a first-year player. A key to Cal s success in 2005 will be at the goalie position where the Bears replace four-year starter Lauren Dennis. Alex Fuene de Colombi and freshman Heather Stuart are slated to split time defending the goal, and the Cal coaches are confident the duo can solidify the team s defense. Feune de Colombi comes into the season with 22 career saves in two years and was All-CIF San Diego in high school. Stuart is a 6-1 goalie out of Campolindo High School, where she was a two-time All-American and a league MVP in We are a more focused team than we have been in the past, said Drury- Pinto. We now know what it takes to get to the NCAAs. The team is older and more comfortable with each other. They are in a good place right now. Hosting the MPSF Tournament puts the ball in our court. The team is excited about this opportunity CAL WOMEN S WATER POLO MEDIA GUIDE 3
