Top quizzer Jared Elmers got Faithful Brothers off to a typical fast start, freezing his chair without error on questions 1, 2 and 4 for 70 points. Unlike the morning session when multiple errors by opponents allowed Jared back in to quizzes to average 126 points, Fearless Brothers and Consuming Fire cannily avoided any errors with Jared frozen. Question 5 was a Memory question and the teams sat it out rather than risk an error. Then Fearless Brothers swung into action. Micah Farrand scored and then Blake Matthews immediately scored twice. Cornerstone got on the board with 20 from Ian Bacheldor before Blake scored his third. The score after question 11 was Everyone passed on question 12, and Ian got his second jump on 13. Cornerstone needed the last two to win. Kellen Burrows got the jump on 14 trying to regain the lead for Faithful Brothers but came up short. Quoting Hebrews 10:16 got no takers on the toss-up. Kellen got the jump on 15 trying for the win but again came up short. Ian s jump on the toss-up froze his chair with a bonus for second place and secured the win for Fearless Brothers. Fearless Brothers - 80; Faithful Brothers - 60; CEPC Consuming Fire - 70 Heart Stays on Top in Varsity After being in first place all season long, it was no surprise that Heart was the first team into the Finals. The battle for the next two spots was wide open. Second in was the fourth-place rookie team from Lake Pointe, followed by the fifth-place Cornerstone team. Typical of Varsity finals, the jumping was fast and conducive of errors. Thus, Heart was on the board first with a freebie on question 3 taken by captain Rachel Dober. She quickly added to Heart s early lead with 20 on question 4. Lake Pointe tied it up in similar fashion. A freebie on question 7 was taken by captain Mike Dempster and he quickly added 20 more. Cornerstone was last on the board, but captain Gabrielle Baut scored twice on 20-point questions to take the lead. Starting question 12, the score was Heart s Jessica Matthews scored a freebie on 12B and Rachel scored on 13 to put Heart back into the lead. Two errors and an attempt left the score unchanged on question 14. With a 20-point lead, Heart did not need to jump on 15 but it was Jordan Hatfield taking the question to win the way Heart had won all season long, with all three quizzers contributing. 6 Chicago 2012 Tournament DBQ Varsity Finalists DBQ 2 100, Quiz Busters 80, Solid Food 110 Solid Food scored first, garnering 30 points before Quiz Busters went on a tear with three in a row for 60 points. On question 9, Michele Weidner finally got DBQ on the board with 20 points. She also scored on questions 11, 15 and 16 to quiz out and give DBQ a share of the lead. The score was But then Solid Food got a 3rd-person jumping bonus and in one question went from 10 behind to 20 ahead. After a span of 9 questions without any errors in the middle portion of the quiz, the pressure at the end resulted in a spat of errors. Jordan Hatfield took advantage on 18B to score a freebie and give DBQ another share of the lead at Solid Food got question 19 for another 20 point lead and all the pressure was on DBQ to get 20 to tie again. An error gave Solid Food the championship and provided Quiz Busters the opportunity to score for a tie for second place. Jordan won the tie-breaker to give DBQ second place in an exciting and very close Finals. DBQ 2 Varsity All Stars Little League All Stars Paulina Pappas had the winning caption for what Clay Stanton told Jordan Hatfield during a timeout in the Finals: You need to get the next 5 questions right, or else we re not driving you back to Michigan. JV All Stars As Seen On Facebook DBQ Junior Varsity Champions HV Ministering Spirits 80 DBQ Dear Friends 170 COVE Shock & Awe 70 Dear Friends set the standard for all teams, with the top quizzer, two more making All Star and going undefeated on the day. Julia Elmers started the Finals with 20 points on question 1. Over the next five questions, COVE scored 20 and Huron Valley scored 40 to take a short lived lead, Mike Dempster answered question 7 followed by Rachel Elmers on 8 for a team bonus. After a COVE error, Gloria Mayer scored for another team bonus, followed by Mike getting his second jump. So after question 11 the score was DBQ Dear Friends Through question 18, Julia added two more scores, Mike also got his third, and a rare error put their score at 170. With the championship secured, they watched HV and COVE, who were tied at 50 points, battle it out for second place. HV got a quiz out without error for a bonus that gave them enough for the second place.
