NOTES FROM THE RECORD-SETTING HEARTBREAKER Temple s five overtime clash at Memphis on Thursday tied an NCAA record for the longest ever women s game. The affair tied Drexel and Northeastern's 2007 game in which the Dragons came out on top, The game was the first overtime game of the season for Temple. The last ovetime game the Owls played was in the semifinals of the 2015 WNIT, when Temple fell at West Virginia. If the game went to a sixth overtime session, the Owls would have had just five eligible players, as five of Temple's 10 players fouled out. Tanaya Atkinson's 20 rebounds were the most for the program since Rhonda Bates had 23 in a 1990 game against George Washington. The 197 total points scored was a Temple program record, surpassing 188 in the Owls' win over Florida on November 13, 2015 (prior to that, the previous record of 186 had stood for 33 years). The 97 combined points in overtime broke the NCAA record. The previous mark was 83 by Kentucky and Baylor on Dec. 6, 2013, in a four overtime game. PLAY4KAY Temple will host its annual Play4Kay game on February 23 against Tulane. The game honors former N.C. State coach Kay Yow who passed away in 2009 after a long battle with breast cancer. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. The Owls bestest their previous season-low of nine turnovers in a loss against Penn. The four turnovers marked the lowest for the program in 12 years. It was Temple s cleanest game since turning the ball over only three times against Villanova on December 21, 2004, and was the first time that the team had recorded less than five turnovers since that game. SHORTAGE OF THREES Temple hit a season-low two three pointers in their latest match-up against SMU, going 2-for-16 from long-range. That tied Temple s two threes made (2-for-10) against Villanova on December 2, as the lowest total from beyond-the arc. However, in both games where Temple only collected two from beyond-the-arc, the Owls grabbed wins. Temple beat Villanova, 61-55, and topped SMU, WHERE DO THEY RANK Temple has two players in the top-15 in the conference in scoring, as Butts ranks fifth (15.6 ppg) and Fitzgerald ranks 12th (13.5 ppg). Senior Erica Covile has 978 career points, and is averaging 9.3 points per game this season, 9.0 points per game in her career. With 22 points left, it would take her around three more games to reach the milestone. Temple is guaranteed at least four more contests this season. Sophomore Alliya Butts recently recorded her 100th career three pointer, and now sits in 6th place on Temple s all-time list with 133. She is on pace to pass former teammate and current graduate assistant, Tyonna Williams 15, for the program s all-time mark (171) by her junior year. As a program, Temple is also approaching a milestone. The Owls have 798 total victories in the 74-year history of the program. Temple s record over the past 74 seasons is (.550). CHARITY STRIPE CHANCES Before the SMU game on January 5, Temple had been shooting 72.2% from the free throw line (3rd in The American), but a string of seven-straight games below 66% shooting from the line had Temple as low as 64.8% from the free throw line (8th out of 11 in the conference) Recently Temple had a 92.3% performance from the line at ECU, draining 24 of 26 attempts. That surge also saw Temple made 21-straight from the charity stripe to start the game. That marked the Owls best shooting performance at the line since a 10-for-10 day at the line against Tulsa. The Owls followed that up with an 87.5% (7-8) performance from the line in a win over SMU and a 85.7% (6-7) performance against USF which has Temple s season total up to 68.6%. The lowest number of scorers Temple has had in a game this season was four in a loss at Rutgers. KEEPING IT OUTSIDE Before getting to the line for 24 attempts against Delaware State, Temple had attempted less than 12 free throws for three-straight contests. In a loss to Florida State, the Owls attempted just three (making two), in a loss. Against Sacred Heart, the Owls went 4-for-9 from the line, but were hot from three, contributing to the win. Temple got to the line only 11 times against Fordham, making seven of their attempts. For the season, the Owls are ninth in the conference (out of 11 teams) in free throws attempted. LEADING THE STAT LINE With her stat line against Rutgers (27 points, nine rebounds, three assist), Feyonda Fitzgerald became the first Temple player since 2011 to lead the team in points, rebounds, and assists. The last player to accomplish that feat for the Owls was Shey Peddy, who totaled 26 points, 9 rebounds, and four assists in a win at Duquesne on February 5, OFFENSE ROLLS AGAINST THE PIONEERS Temple s 30-point victory against Sacred Heart on December 9, marking the first time an Owl

8 STORY LINES squad defeated an opponent by that margin since a 33-point win over Cincinnati on January 20, Leading to the offense outburst, were 38 total field goals, while a season-best 52.1% from the field. The Owls also shot 50% from three (12-24) for first time since Valentine s Day last season when Temple went 7-for-12 (58.3%) from long range against Houston. The Temple shooting numbers benefitted from a season-best 28 assists against Sacred Heart. The 28 helpers marked the first time that the Owls had over 25 since the 2011 season (27 at George Washington - 2/16/11). The Owls also had 15 steals for the first time this season. DOMINATING DELAWARE STATE Temple s victory over Delaware State hit a number of milestones for the Owls. The tripledigit point total was the first 100-point game for the program in 21 years. Temple last hit the 100- point mark when it scored 102 in a win over Rutgers on March 3, The 41-point win was also the first 40+ point victory for the program in three years. The last time a Temple team beat a team by 40 or more was when the Owls topped Rhode Island, 84-41, on February 19, REBOUNDING IS KEY Five out of the first six Temple wins this season all had one thing in common: the Owls out-rebounded their opponents. Temple is 7-2 when recording better rebounding numbers this season, and is 2-3 when being out-rebounded. For the season, the Owls have a rebounding margin of +3.0, thanks in large part to out-rebounding Sacred Heart, The +26 rebounding margin in that game was the highest all season, and it marked the first time that Temple had a 20 or more rebound advantage in a game since out-rebounding Duquesne by 25 on February 17, WORK HORSES Junior Feyonda Fitzgerald and sophomore Alliya Butts combined for 45 of the team s 51 against Rutgers, but both also played nearly the whole game. Fitzgerald recorded her third career game without a break, playing all 40 minutes against the Scarlet Knights. Butts established a near career high of 37 minutes played in a game, one she set just a few days before, seeing 36 minutes of action against La Salle. PHILADELPHIA BIG 5 Temple won its Philadelphia Big 5 opener for the third-straight season, with all three wins coming against La Salle. Last season, Temple finished 1-3 in the Big 5, topping La Salle, but falling to St. Joseph s, Villanova, and Penn. The Owls combined point differential in the three Big 5 losses last season was just 11 points, with an average margin of victory of 3.67 points, including one overtime loss. This season, Temple is 2-2 in the Big 5, after losses to Penn and Saint Joseph s and wins over La Salle and Villanova. 50 AT THE HALF Temple led Florida at the half in the season-opener, marking the first time that the Owls have scored 50 points in a half since The last time that the Owls accomplished that feat was when the team netted 52 against George Washington on February 16, Despite only scoring 37 second-half points in that game, Temple went on to it, 89-36, marking the second largest margin of victory in program history. The Owls also scored 53 points in the first half of the Delaware State game, later adding 47 second-half points to reach triple figures for the first time since the Owls won against Rutgers on March 3, RECORD WATCH ALL-TIME CAREER POINTS 1. During her tenure she has served as the Recruiting Coordinator and is responsible for bringing talented players like Erica [Covile], Feyonda [Fitzgerald] and Alliya [Butts], to name a few. She works primarily with the guards and strives to make them the very best each year. Her passion for our program is evident in everything she has done to help us be successful." 12 HEAD COACH TONYA CARDOZA Tonya Cardoza is in her eighth season on North Broad Street, continuing and building upon the success of Temple women s basketball. The Owls showed that they are ready to make a return to the national stage. Cardoza's squad made the first post-season final four in program history, advancing to the WNIT semifinals before falling in overtime at West Virginia. The Owls finished with a 20-win season, going overall, including a 12-6 mark in the tough American Athletic Conference. The season saw the breakout of freshman Alliya Butts, who was named Big 5 Freshman of the Year, while also earning spots on the American All-Conference team, the American All-Rookie team, and the All- Big 5 team. Junior combo guard Erica Covile also received All-Big 5 and All-American Athletic Conference honors, while senior Tyonna Williams earned the American Sportsmanship Award, as well as one of six spots on the All-WNIT team marked a new era of women s basketball at Temple for Cardoza competing in the inaugural season of the American Athletic Conference. Guided by true freshman point guard Feyonda Fitzgerald, the Owls faced seven nationally ranked opponents tying the school record for the most in season including two games against defending national champion and No. 1 Connecticut and Final Four participant Louisville. The young Owls finished fifth in American play after predicted to finish ninth, showing the league and the nation that they had fight. Fitzgerald was a unanimous All-Freshman Team honoree from the conference as well as a second-team All-Conference selection. Junior Rateska Brown earned the American s inaugural Sixth Player of the Year Award. Senior Natasha Thames was a second-team All-Conference honoree, and freshman Taylor Robinson was named to the All- Freshman team. The Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Cardoza led the Owls to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to the Second Round in both 2010 and The Owls narrowly missed earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament in , but took a top spot in the Women s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and advanced to the third round. Along with earning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors for the Owls' performance in , Cardoza was honored as the Big 5 Coach of the Year for a third time. She earned that honor in each of her first three seasons at Temple, and the Owls earned their sixth straight Big 5 title in her first year with the program. Temple won the Big 5 again in 2011, and finished as runner-up in both 2010 and Already all-time in her head coaching career, Cardoza led Temple to at least 20 wins in her first four years at the helm. During her inaugural season in , Cardoza guided TU to a mark and an NCAA?Tournament appearance. She was a finalist for the National Rookie Coach of the Year award. The Owls reached 25 wins in which tied for the second-most in the history of the program. In , the Owls finished 24-9 which included a 15-game win streak and a 13-1 record in the Atlantic 10. The season saw Temple go and win 8th Season - VIRGINIA 91 Career Record: in a row, once again with a 13-1 mark in the conference. During their final year of Atlantic 10 Conference play in , Cardoza guided the nation s second-youngest team (six freshmen). After spending 14 years as assistant coach at the University of Connecticut under Hall of Fame coach Geno Auriemma, a tenure in which she helped the Huskies to five National Championships, few doubted that Cardoza had what it takes to build a successful program. The Owls finished in the Top 3 in the Atlantic 10 for three consecutive seasons. In Cardoza s first season she coached the squad to an upset over No. 13 Xavier, making her the first coach in TU women s basketball history to upset a ranked team during her rookie season. Cardoza was instrumental in All-Conference selection LaKeisha Eaddy s transition to point guard in , nearly helping the upperclassman set a new single season record for assists. Cardoza also retained then-freshman recruit Kristen McCarthy, who was named to the A-10 First Team in 2010, as well as taking home the title of Big 5 Player of the Year. Cardoza's best recruit had to sit out a year after transferring from Division I Wright State in 2009, but Shey Peddy then became one of the top players in the history of the program. Peddy took home both the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2012, and was named the Big 5 Player of the Year for a second straight time. Peddy was a two-time Atlantic 10 First Team selection and made her mark on the all-time career record lists despite playing only two years with the Owls. Peddy became Cardoza s first WNBA draft pick (as a head coach) when she was taken 23rd overall in the 2012 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky. Arriving at Connecticut at the start of the season, Cardoza helped guide the Huskies to an unprecedented record, seven Final Four appearances and six No. 1 National Rankings in the final Associated Press poll. Cardoza was a part of four undefeated regular seasons, including two unbeaten national championship teams in and The Huskies also won a NCAA record 70 consecutive games from 2001 to In Big East play, the team won 12 regular-season titles and 12 conference tournament championships.
