The first athletic teams at USC Upstate were fielded in Called the Fighting Bantams, those early teams wore garnet and black and played their basketball games in a local junior high school gymnasium. In , the University took its first of two steps to distinguish itself from USC Columbia by changing the school colors from garnet and black to purple and white. A year later, the University changed its nickname to the Spartan Rifles in honor of a local militia unit that played an integral part in the Revolutionary War, winning an important victory at the Battle of Cowpens. Though the official nickname was the Spartan Rifles, the athletic teams were known as just the Rifles. The USCS athletic teams were known as the Rifles from In 2004, the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees passed a resolution to rename the University in Spartanburg as the University of South Carolina Upstate. In a move to help better brand the University and its image, the official nickname of the school was changed to the Spartans. The name continues to pay homage to the militia unit known as the Spartan Rifles, though the nickname has been modified to emphasize the first portion of the militia unit s name instead of the last part. Though the name of the University and the nickname of its athletic teams have changed, the colors remain hunter green, white, and black. In , the school colors were changed to green and white. Over the years, the original Kelly green has been transformed to the modern day Hunter green, and black has now been added as a complementary color. 14 2007 Preview 2007 Season Preview USC Upstate will take 27 years of history and success to NCAA Division I and membership in the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2007, ending a 16-year run of dominance in NCAA Division II and the Peach Belt Conference. Upstate has been one of college soccer s premier programs from its inception in 1980 and the Spartans will look to carry on that tradition as it moves into Division I competition. Upstate was a regular in the national tournament as a member of NAIA in the 1980 s and finished third three straight years from The Spartans carried on the tradition as a member of NCAA Division II, advancing to the NCAA Tournament 10 times in 16 years. Upstate played for the national title in 1995 and 1998, settling for second both years. The Spartans won seven regular season Peach Belt Conference championships and nine league tournament titles, playing in the conference tournament championship game in 14 of the 16 events conducted by the league. Upstate looks to use the success and ability to win at all levels as a foundation for building a winning program on the Division I level. The 2007 season will be the first building block of that foundation. While the Spartans return a solid nucleus of players that led Upstate to a record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2006, the majority of the 2007 roster is made up of freshmen recruited specifically for the move to Division I. On paper, the recruiting class is one of the best the program has ever signed. However, Upstate has always played at a high level of competition regardless of division standing. How well the 16 newcomers come together and blend with the returning players in the preseason will largely determine how successful the Spartans will be in their inaugural season in NCAA Division I. Head Coach Greg Hooks is in his 13th season at the helm of the Upstate men s soccer program. He was inducted into the school s Athletics Hall of Fame last fall after leading the Spartans to five regular season conference championships and six conference tournament titles. His teams have made six appearances in the NCAA Tournament and his 1995 and 1998 squads advanced to the national championship game. He ended his Division II career as the second winningest coach all-time and ranks as the 19th winningest coach of all-time in the NCAA, regardless of division standing. Hooks will rely on the leadership of returning Carter Ridgeway players to help the freshmen class assimilate to the Upstate system. In particular, look for Nick Buxton and Troy Simon to be the leaders on the field. Buxton is an exceptional defender who has manned the sweeper position since his freshman season. Simon has been a strong midfielder since coming to Upstate as a junior. He missed most of the 2006 season with a torn ACL, but has returned to top form for his final year. The two will lead a talented and experienced group of returning players. Kim Krohn, Carter Ridgeway, David Stanbra, Stewart Stanbra, and David Acosta all have seen significant action in their careers. Upstate will have to David Stanbra replace some of the key players from the 2006 season. Gone is All-American goalkeeper Ryan Cooper. Cooper led the Peach Belt Conference in goals against average and topped the nation in save percentage. In addition, three-time All-American forward Liam Slack also exhausted his eligibility. He finished his four-year career as the third-leading scorer in the program and the fourth-leading scorer in the history of the Peach Belt Conference. Saul Stoner is one of the top defenders in the history of the program and manned the left marking back position for four years. In addition, five other players who either started or saw significant action are no longer with the Spartans, making the need for the large recruiting class. With 15 of the 16 newcomers entering Upstate as freshmen, the learning curve could be a weakness early on. Overall, the recruiting class is talented. Several of the newcomers came from strong club and high school programs and many have amassed individual accolades. The hope is that the inexperience of the players on the collegiate level will be overcome by their ability on the field. Hooks expects the Spartans to be a solid, hard-working team that will have to rely on a number of solid players instead of having just one or two superstars. Many of the players have the ability to play multiple positions, which will make the battle for a starting position continue throughout the season. The amount of depth and the limited number of spots on the field should keep the level of play at a high standard throughout the year. Upstate, though, is going into uncharted territory in Division I. Not only do the Spartans play a tough Atlantic Sun Conference schedule, but the non-conference slate is demanding as well. The Spartans will play home conference games against Belmont, Florida Gulf Coast, Lipscomb, and Stetson while hitting the road in league play against Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Mercer, and North Florida. Non-conference opponents Georgia State and Georgia Southern come to Spartanburg to play at County University Soccer Stadium, while Upstate will hit the road to face non-league foes Clemson, Newberry, Presbyterian, Radford, VMI, and Winthrop. I think our schedule will be a good barometer of how well we will fare in the A-Sun and Division I soccer, says Hooks. Aside from our conference schedule, we will face Clemson, Winthrop, and Radford. They are teams who have had success on the Division I level. NCAA Division I soccer has very few weak teams, partly due to the fact that the sport is not sponsored by many schools and the available talent is not spread out over a lot of programs. The teams are evenly matched. To be successful, we will need to be solid defensively. With most of the games being close, preventing as many goals as possible will be critical. Fitness also becomes a premium because of how close matches are and the need to perform late in games. Forward Upstate will have to replace both of its starting forwards from a year ago. Gone are Liam Slack and Troy Mellanson. Slack was a three-time All-American and the program s third-leading scorer all-time. Mellanson was an All-Region and All-Conference selection a year ago. Returning player David Stanbra along with newcomers Jack Burridge, Alex Garcev, and Chad McCoy are expected to battle for the two starting positions. Standbra (6-2, 180, Jr., Worcester, England) ranked third on the team in scoring behind Slack and Mellanson in He finished the season with 14 points with one game-winning goal. He has a tall frame which makes him a good target on corner kicks. He has worked on becoming more consistent from game to game and is expected to be a key player this season. Burridge (6-3, 185, Fr., South Shields, England) comes from a solid club background in England. He is a proven goal scorer with solid quickness and ball skills. Garcev (5-9, 170, Fr., London, England) just finds way of putting the ball into the net. He comes from a strong club background in England and was one of three individuals selected for the Highly Commended Player Award from the England Independent Schools Football Association a year ago. McCoy (5-10, 175, Fr., Tomball, Texas) enjoyed a tremendous high school and club career in Texas. He was an All-District selection and earned District Offensive Most Valuable Player honors as a senior. David Acosta and Matt Skinner are returning players who will battle for playing time and provide depth at the position. Acosta (5-10, 169, Sr., Spartanburg, S.C.) has seen his share of time on the field for the Spartans in his first three seasons and is expected to 12 U S C U P S T A T E

2007 Season Preview 2007 Preview continue to be a solid role player. Skinner (5-10, 140, So., Gaffney, S.C.) garnered experience last year as freshmen last year as he made the transition to college soccer. He improved as the season went on and is expected to continue in his development with increased time in the program. Midfield Upstate has tremendous depth in the midfield with 11 players vying for playing time and starting positions at four spots. Perhaps the only player to have a starting position locked down is fifth-year senior Troy Simon. Simon (5-10, 200, Sr., Freeman s Village, Antigua) was a starter on the team the last two seasons. He missed all but four games a year ago with a torn ACL and was granted a fifth year of eligibility for 07. He is strong and talented in the center of the midfield. Kim Krohn and Carter Ridgeway are returning players who are expected to battle for playing time. Krohn (5-11, 175, Sr., Oslo, Norway) missed the last half of the season last year with a muscle injury. He has returned in top form and Troy Simon should be a solidifying presence in the center of the midfield. Ridgeway (5-7, 150, Sr., Spartanburg, S.C.) has shown steady improvement each year he has been in the program. He emerged as a solid player late in his sophomore season and flourished on the right flank a year ago. Newcomers Landon Fruge, Joe Edwards, Gunnar Kristiansson, and Ryan Martin are expected to see significant action in the midfield. Another newcomer, Ryan Kropp, was expected to be a key player, but will miss the 2007 season after having surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder. Fruge (6-1, 180, Fr., Cypress, Texas) played every position on the field, with the exception of goalkeeper, at Klein High School and helped lead the team to a No. 3 national ranking in He scored 17 goals and added 16 assists a year ago. Edwards (5-10, 175, Fr., Aylsham, England) possesses tremendous athleticism and will also run track for Upstate. He is talented with the ball and moves up and down the flank well. Kristiansson (5-9, 170, Fr., Reykjavik, Iceland) played for the U-19 and U-21 National Team in his native Iceland. He scores, distributes, and defends and is a complete player. Kropp (6-0, 160, Fr., Rock Hill, S.C.) was considered one of the best high school players in South Carolina a year ago. He possesses speed and quickness and is a hardnosed player. Martin (5-10, 165, Fr., Irmo, S.C.) was an All-State selection last year at Dutch Fork High School. A starter for four years, he has experience at playing in a high-level high school program. Justin Gill, Sebastian Gonzales- Orbegoso, and Tommy Vaughan are expected to provide depth at the p o - sition. Gill (6-0, 169, Jr., Newnan, Ga.) has improved each year he has been in the program and could see increased time on the field this year. Gonzales-Orbegoso (5-11, 183, Sr., Lima, Peru) is playing his first year on the soccer team, though he has been a valuable member of the nationally-ranked tennis team at Upstate. He played extensively in club soccer in Peru. Vaughan (5-9, 163, Jr., Newnan, Ga.) missed all of last year after tearing and ACL in preseason workouts. He has worked hard to get back to form and will have to shake off the rust of a missed year on the field. Defender Nick Buxton returns to lead the Spartans defense, a unit that will see three new faces in starting positions this year. Despite the new faces, the unit is once again expected to be a strength of the team and Buxton will no doubt dictate how well the Spartans perform on the defensive end of the field. Buxton (6-0, 178, Jr., Towcester, England) became a go-to player as a defender last season. Though the Spartans played with a four back system, Buxton played the role as sweeper, often times serving as the last line of defense for the goalkeepers. A tenacious defender, he earned All-Region and All-Conference honors a year ago. He also pushed up on the attack at times and finished the season with three goals and three assists for nine points. Stewart Stanbra (6-0, 180, Sr., Worcester, England) could find a starting role in the back as well. He has spent the majority of the last two seasons playing in the midfield, but played some at defender last year. A seasoned veteran, his experience could give him an advantage over the newcomers. Newcomers Steve Bantock, Matt Clark, Chris Kohlmeir, and Chris McCoy will join Stanbra in fighting for a starting position in the back. Bantock (6-0, 173, Fr., East Sussex, England) is an experienced player from England. He has a tremendous club background and played in international competitions for the England International U18 team. Also a rugby player, his toughness could well be suited for the center of the defense. Clark (6-0, 170, Fr., Shefford, England) was a stalwart on the Bedfordshire team that played for the National Cup championship. He was one of the final 32 players considered for the English School s U18 National Team. Kohlmeir (5-8, 165, Fr., Huntersville, N.C.) led North Mecklenberg High School to a No. 1 state and No. 9 national ranking as a senior. He is technically gifted with strong tactical skills. He is hard to knock off the ball and is strong in the air. McCoy (5-10, 175, Fr., Tomball, Tex.) was a First Team All-District selection at Tomball High School. He is a physically strong defender with solid skills. He should see significant action in the back. Goalkeeper The goalkeeper position was the hardest hit area in the off-season for the Spartans. Not only did Ryan Cooper finish his eligibility, he took with him All-America honors, a single-season school best 0.49 goals against average, and eight shutouts from a year ago. In addition, Peter Davis, who spent last season as Cooper s backup and recorded a pair of shutouts, injured his knee and is unavailable for action this season. The goalkeeper position will be placed in the hands of one of three newcomers to the program Patrick de St. Aubin, Jason McCabe, or Jack Stern. All three are strong, dependable keepers and all could see action in net this season. de St. Aubin (5-10, 165, Fr., Irmo, S.C.) spent three widely successful seasons at St. Vincent-St. Mary s in Akron, Ohio, prior to moving to Irmo High School for his senior season. Has plenty of skill and experience at the position. McCabe (6-2, 170, Fr., Irmo, S.C.) was a standout at Dutch Fork High School and in club soccer in Columbia. He has the physical stature and the skill to play the position on the collegiate level. Stern (6-0, 180, Fr., Lewes, England) was a three-time Player of the Year and five-time Team Captain for his high school club in England. A veteran in the net, he has the physical, mental, and technical tools to see significant time on the field. Nick Buxton S P A R T A N S O C C E R 13

Tournament Years NCAA Division II USC Upstate Soccer: The NCAA Division II Years The University of South Carolina Upstate soccer team enjoyed tremendous success in the 1980 s, as Frank Kohlenstein turned the Spartans into an NAIA power. USC Upstate posted an overall record of (.717) for the decade, Rifle Field hosted two NAIA National Tournaments, and the Spartans finished third nationally three times. After one year as a dual member of the NAIA and NCAA in 1990, USC Upstate began play as a full member of the NCAA in While the decade of the 80 s was immensely impressive, the program enjoyed even greater success in the 1990 s. USC Upstate teams were (.783), hosted the national championships in 1995 and 1998 as USC Upstate advanced to the title game both years, won three PBC regular season championships and six PBC Tournament titles. The program did not slow down once the year 2000 rolled around and, after a four-year break from the NCAA Tournament, returned to the postseason in 2002 and Upstate ended its membership in NCAA Division II and the Peach Belt Conference with a final NCAA Tournament appearance in The Spartans held a record of in NCAA Division II. Note: Prior to the 2004 season, the University changed its name to USC Upstate and its nickname to Spartans. All references below to USC Spartanburg, USCS, and Rifles are for historical purposes only The 1991 season marked the Rifles first step into the NCAA national spotlight. Under the direction of firstyear head coach Rob Russo, USCS qualified for the NCAA Tournament in its first year as a full member. TheRifles finished with a record and traveled to Tampa to face a strong Spartans squad in th opening round. A Marlon Burgess goal in the 10th minute gave #9 USCS the lead. But Tampa goals in the 31st and 47th minutes gave the #5 Spartans the win and spoiled the Rifles upset bid. Danny Rebuck and Victor Pace were named First Team All-Americans; Rebuck, Pace, Burgess, and Darren Ambrose were named All-South Region; and Rebuck was named PBC Player of the Year. Rebuck (18 goals, 11 assists, 47 points) and Burgess ( ) paced the Rifles scoring attack, while goalkeeper Ambrose posted a 0.51 GAA. The Rifles opened the 1992 season 1-1-2, and a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament seemed a long way off. But 15 consecutive wins later, USCS was ranked No.5, they had won a PBC regular season championship and a PBC Tournament championship, and they were poised to meet defending national champion, No. 2 Florida Tech in the opening round. The Panthers knocked the Rifles out with a 4-0 win. Darren Ambrose, Marlon Burgess, Scott Halkett, Jerry Kandakai and Danny Rebuck were named All-South Region, Burgess was named the PBC Player of the Year, and Rob Russo was named PBC Coach of the Year. Rebuck ( ) and Burgess ( ) again led the USCS attack S P A R T A N S O C C E R 57

NCAA Division II 1993 USCS entered the 1993 season as the team to beat in the PBC, after sweeping the regular season and tournament titles in A September loss to rival Lander cost the team a regular season championship, but the Rifles gained revenge with a 2-1 overtime win in the PBC finals to advance to the NCAA Tournament. They opened on the road against #5 Tampa, walked away with a 4-0 win for the program s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. The Rifles opponent in the quarterfinals would be Florida Tech, who entered the game with a perfect record and ranked No. 1. A goal by Miles Dean in the 72nd minute tied the game at 2-2 and sent it into overtime. The upset for the No. 9 Rifles was not to be, however, as the Panther s Richard Sharpe scored his third goal of the game in the 110th minute. Marlon Burgess was named First Team All-American, and Burgess, James Eley, Scott Halkett and Sean Hartley were named All-South Region. Dean ( ) and Burgess ( ) were the leading scorers The 1994 Rifles enjoyed a truly outstanding season. They rolled through the PBC, capturing regular season and tournament championships. They set what was then a school record with 72 goals on their way to a Tournament Years record and a fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. They used a balanced scoring attack, with five players scoring at least 24 points, but none more than 27. And they earned their first-ever home NCAA Tournament match, finishing No. 2 in the final regular season poll. On November 19, USCS welcomed Tampa to Rifle Field. The Rifles had already defeated the Spartans 2-1 in Tampa, and hoped to repeat that performance in Spartanburg. Tampa had other ideas, defeating USCS 3-0 on their way to the national championship. Marlon Burgess and Scott Halkett were named First Team All-American, and Burgess, James Eley, Halkett, Sean Hartley and Musa Kaba were named All-South Region. Kyle Jordan ( ), Musa Kaba ( ), Brent Askeland ( ), Burgess (8-9-25) and Dean ( ) led the balanced Rifles offense Five in a row!! For the second time in four seasons, the Rifles were a little slow out of the gate. After two wins to open the year, USCS went over the next four and stood at entering PBC play. A midseason loss to Lander again cost USCS a regular season title, but once again the Rifles avenged the loss in the PBC Championship, topping the Senators 3-1 in overtime. In the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, #6 USCS got two goals from Miles Dean to defeat #10 Presbyterian 2-0 at Rifle Field. The win set up a rematch with defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Tampa in Florida. A goal by Peter Kirkelos in the 43rd minute was the only scoring of the game as USCS pulled off the upset. The win placed the Rifles in the Final Four, an event that would be staged at Rifle Field. In the semifinals, USCS came from behind to defeat #12 Mercyhurst, 3-2 in double overtime. A goal by Nestor Chacon in the 114th minute sent the game into the second overtime, where the Rifles won on a Kirkelos goal in the 131st minute. USCS would meet #5 Southern Connecticut State in the finals. The Rifles managed just 58 U S C U P S T A T E

Tournament Years The Rifles managed just two shots, and the Owls scored twice in a six minute span in the first half for a 2-0 win. Scott Halkett was named First Team All-American, and Miles Dean, James Eley and Halkett were named All- South Region. Dean ( ), Brent Askeland ( ) and Musa Kaba (9-7-25) were the leading scorers. NCAA Division II The 1997 season was quite a reversal from the previous year. The Rifles won 20 games, scored a schoolrecord 102 goals and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals just one year after posting a disappointing record. USCS opened the season with nine consecutive wins, outscoring their opponents The Rifles then lost three of their next four, all by one goal. They would snap out of the slump in a big way, however, winning their next 10 games. Along the way, USCS captured the PBC regular season and tournament championships by winning 10 consecutive games over PBC opponents by a combined score of They opened the NCAA Tournament at home versus Alabama-Huntsville. The Rifles took a 1-0 lead on a Brian Armstrong goal in the 46th minute. The Chargers came back to tie the score in the 69th minute, and took the lead in the 82nd minute. But Phil Stolfa would answer with the equalizer just 1:45 later, sending the game to overtime. Paul Zgalich scored the game-winner for the Rifles in the 92nd minute. USCS traveled to Boca Raton, Florida for the quarterfinals, and were defeated 3-1 by Lynn. Khari Sharrieff and Paul Zgalich were named Second Team All-American; Henrik Ronnevig, Sharrieff, Kalle Siira and Zgalich were named All-South Region; Sharrieff was named PBC Player of the Year; and Greg Hooks was named PBC and South Region Coach of the Year. Sharrieff ( ) and Ronnevig ( ) paced the Rifles offense. After winning the PBC regular season and tournament championships, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals, and posting a 20-4 record, the Rifles were ready to take the next step in USCS steamrolled to a 17-0 regular season ranking. Three straight wins in the PBC Tournament gave the Rifles their second consecutive double-double -- champions of the regular season and the tournament. The perfect season also extended the Rifles winning streak over PBC opponents to 20. In the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, #2 USCS got goals from Henrik Ronnevig, Matt Lucas and Phil Stolfa as they defeated #7 West Florida 3-1 at Rifle Field. The win set up a rematch with No. 1 ranked Lynn -- a team USCS had never defeated in Florida. The Rifles took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Khari Sharrieff in the 13th minute. Lynn, playing a man down after a red card, scored the equalizer in the 79th minute. After a scoreless first overtime, things got a little crazy. Rifles goalkeeper Jeff Negalha was whistled for a foul and issued a red card for a dangerous play in the box at the 107:55 mark. Freshman keeper Chad Todd was inserted to face the ensuing penalty kick. Todd stoned the kick, which bounded to sweeper Rob Mikulski in the right corner. He cleared the ball to Sharrieff, who was waiting just past midfield. Sharrieff attacked the goal, and found a streaking Hasse Eranka, who scored just 16 seconds after the failed penalty kick to give USCS a 2-1 double overtime win and a trip to the Final Four. The 22-0 Rifles were chosen to host the Final Four for the second time in four seasons. In the first semifinal, Southern Connecticut State defeated Seattle Pacific 3-0 to advance to the title game. In the other semifinal, USCS faced No. 15 Mercyhurst, who entered the game with a record. The situation was eerily similar to 1995, when the Rifles hosted the Final Four, faced Mercyhurst in the semifinals, and Southern Connecticut State was waiting in the final. USCS got a goal and an assist from Ronnevig, and Aaron Ziehm also S P A R T A N S O C C E R 59

NCAA Division II scored as the Rifles won 2-0. Todd, making the start after Negalha s red card, recorded 10 saves to earn the shutout. The championship game would be a rematch of the Rifles thrilling 4-3 double overtime win in September. A Rifle Field crowd of 2,833 saw the Owls score in the 8th minute, and hold on for a 1-0 win. The Rifles set a NCAA Division II record for winning percentage (23-1,.958). Ronnevig led the nation in assists and was named First Team All-American, as was Sharrieff. Ronnevig, Sharrieff and Kalle Siira were named All-South Region First-team, and Ronnevig, Sharrieff, Siira, Mikulski and Negalha were named All-PBC. Ronnevig ( ) and Sharrieff ( ) were the leading scorers Tournament Years the region and the No. 5 team in the country, USCS was awarded a host site for the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Rifles and Queens and battled in a quagmire at County University Soccer Stadium. Ricky Charles unassisted goal in the 53rd-minute was the difference as the Rifles prevailed 1-0 to move on to the quarterfinals against Central Arkansas. Central Arkansas jumped on USCS quickly and took a 2-0 lead early in the second half, eventually settling for a 3-0 win to end the Rifles season and quest for a national title. Despite the exit from the NCAA Playoffs, the 2002 season was marked with a renewal of excellence for the Rifles. Charles earned All- America honors, defender Marlon Grant was named the Peach Belt Player of the Year and joined Charles, Chris Baretta, Preben Ringerike, and league Freshman of the Year Jorge Atehortua on the All-Conference team. Ringerike was named the PBC Tournament Most Valuable Player, while Atehortua, Charles, and Grant were named All-Region. Coach Hooks was not left out of the accomplishments either, winning his 200th career match After going three years without an NCAA Tournament appearance, the 2002 Rifle soccer team began the season with a mission - to restore the program to the elite level it has enjoyed for the better part of a quarter century. USCS has never disappeared from the national scene, but a three-year drought from the NCAA Playoffs was too much for head coach Greg Hooks and the Rifle Boys. USCS opened the season as host of the Southern Soccer Classic, scoring 12 goals in two matches to win the tournament, dispatching of Limestone and Mars Hill. A close 3-2 win at Brevard gave the Rifles a wake-up call and USCS responded with eight more victories, outscoring its opponents 47-4 to start the season The perfect start of the season allowed the Rifles to climb from its preseason ranking of 17th in the country to the No. 3 spot in the NSCAA Top 25 poll. However, the stay was short-lived as rival Lander claimed a 3-2 win in Greenwood, S.C., to end the Rifles perfect run. USCS fell to No. 5 in the poll and went 3-1 the rest of the way heading into the Peach Belt Tournament. USCS recorded three shutouts en route to its eighth PBC Tournament title in the 12-year history of the event. As the No. 1 team in The 2003 Rifles entered the season as the sixth-ranked team in the NSCAA Top 25 poll, and it would be a prophetic ranking by year s end. USCS started quickly by winning its first three games of the season before facing Lander in an epic battle. The Bearcats scored in the 17th-minute and played inspired defense to keep USCS scoreless until Preben Ringerike tied the match in the 83rd-minute to tie the match and send it into overtime. Once in OT, Ringerike ended the match 1:51 into the extra period to lift the Rifles to the win. USCS dispatched of all comers and rose to No. 2 in the poll with a record heading into the final two regular season games of the year. In a constant, heavy rain, Presbyterian scored with less than five minutes to play and USCS had two goals called back on controversial offsides calls as the Blue Hose upset USCS 1-0 to hand the Rifles their first loss on the season. It would later end up being its only official loss. USCS defeated Tusculum, 8-1, to clinch the No. 1 seed in the Southeast Region heading into the postseason. USCS defeated Clayton State and UNC Pembroke (on penalty kicks) to its ninth tournament title in 13 years of the event and its third in a row. USCS hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. After a first round bye, USCS faced Carson-Newman in the second round. The game headed into overtime where the Eagles prevailed, ending Upstate s season with a record. Ricky Charles earned Peach Belt Player of the Year honors and was joined on the All-Conference team by Gary Lynch, Preben Ringerike, and Almir Barbosa. Barbosa was named the PBC Tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Andrew Frame, Josh Richardson, and Janiel Simon. Charles, Ringerike, Lynch, and Liam Slack earned All-Region honors and Charles picked up his second All-America award. Head Coach Greg Hooks was awarded the Peach Belt Coach of the Year honor for the third time in his career. And the final national ranking... No. 6. NCAA Division II 2006 In its last year as a member of NCAA Division II and the Peach Belt Conference, Upstate wanted to go out with a bang. The Spartans started the quest for their first NCAA Tournament bid since 2003 by winning its first two matches before suffering a 1-1 tie to Limestone in what would be a prophetic match. Upstate answered with five straight wins, including a 5-0 drubbing of rival Lander, which was ranked No. 5 at the time. Upstate suffered its first loss of the season in a 1-0 decision to UNC Pembroke. Upstate rattled off three more wins before settling for a tie, a loss, and a win to end the regular season with an record and a mark in the Peach Belt. The No. 3 seed in the Peach Belt Tournament, the Spartans fell in the semifinals but did enough in the regular season and the league tournament to earn its 10th NCAA Tournament appearance in 16 years as a member of Division II. Upstate faced Limestone in the opening round of the tournament hosted by Lander in Greenwood, S.C., and again battled to a tie after regulation and overtime. However, the Saints prevailed on penalty kicks to end Upstate s run in the tournament and Division II. Liam Slack became the program s only three-time Al-American and goalkeeper Ryan Cooper joined him on the All-America list. Cooper, Slack, Nick Buxton, and Troy Mellanson earned All-Conference and All-Region honors. Names like Frank Kohlenstein ( ), the USC Upstate Hall of Fame head coach who started the program in 1979 as a club sport and elevated it to varsity status in 1980; Mario del Pino ( ), a USC Upstate Hall of Fame member; Bob Cheshier ( ), a member of the 100-point club and an Athletics Hall of Fame member; Carlos Osorio ( ), who remains in Spartanburg as the head coach of the Dorman High School boys soccer team; and Majid Ahmaduarjii ( ), a member of the 100-point club; Martin Hill ( ), a USC Upstate Hall of Fame member; and Danny Rebuck ( , ), a USC Upstate Hall of Fame member; are just a few players who stand out in the tremendously successful history of the program and who helped build the tradition that is USC Upstate men s soccer. The 1980 teams combined for a record and a winning percentage of.717. The early 1980 s men s soccer teams laid the foundation for future generations of Spartan soccer. Upstate finished third three straight years in the NAIA National Tournament from Kohlenstein helped lead the team to the national Final Four of the NAIA Tournament in 1983, finishing with a (.935) record and a third-place finish in the nation. The.935 winning percentage is the second best mark in school history and stood as the standard bearer for 15 years until the 1998 bettered the mark with a.958 winning percentage (23-1-0). The 1983 squad began a string of three consecutive third place finishes in the national tournament as the 1984 and 1985 teams also advanced to the Final Four. The 1984 team finished with a record (.796), while the 1985 squad was (.750). Kohlenstein coached nine of the 10 years that covered the 1980s, turning the program over to David Linenberger for the 1989 season. When he left, the program had tallied 20 All-Americans, two NAIA Scholar Athletes, 46 All-District Six selections, four District Six Player of the Year honorees, and Kohlenstein himself was named National Coach of the Year twice. In all, 11 of the top 25 all-time scoring leaders and seven of the 11 men s soccer inductees in the USC Upstate Hall of Fame played or coached in the 1980s. 75 County University Soccer Stadium The County University Soccer Stadium stands as an illustration of the relationship between USC Upstate and the Spartanburg community. USC Upstate and Spartanburg County joined together to build five much-needed regulation soccer fields on University property. The fields serve as a home site for Spartanburg s youth soccer organizations. They also serve as the practice facility for USC Upstate s men s and women s soccer teams. In addition, Spartanburg County funded the $850,000 County University Soccer Stadium with the hopes of attracting regional and national youth soccer tournaments, as well as NCAA events in conjunction with USC Upstate. County University Soccer Stadium opened in August of 2001 when the Spartans took on Colorado School of Mines coached by USC Upstate Hall of Fame coach Frank Kohlenstein. USC Upstate was not a gracious host as the Spartans claimed a 1-0 victory. Since its opening in 2001, the County University Soccer Stadium has been the site of Peach Belt Conference Tournament games for men s and women s soccer and hosted NCAA Tournament games in 2002 and In addition, the facility, along with the youth soccer fields, have hosted national and regional ODP camps as well as the Canadian Women s National Team. Recently, the soccer facilities have been the host site for the NSCAA coaching certification clinics. The County University Soccer Stadium complex was officially completed with the opening of the University Readiness Center in May The building houses five locker rooms, a concession stand, hospitality suites, and public restrooms for the use of the men s and women s soccer programs.
