GoShockers.com SETTING THE STAGE Indiana State Basketball opens Missouri Valley Conference play on Wednesday, December 28 at 7:00 p.m. (ET) as they host Wichita State inside Hulman Center. The Sycamores look to improve upon their 4-1 record at home as they welcome the Shockers who enter with a 10-3 mark after non-conference play. Both teams won their final non-conference contests at home last week. QUICK HITS - Indiana State is 77-9 when holding teams to 63 points or less under seventh-year head coach Greg Lansing (and 18-0 when limiting teams to 53 or less). - Indiana State has earned 63 close victories (five points or less) since Under Greg Lansing, the Sycamores are in close games. - Greg Lansing is just the sixth head coach in the history of the program to record at least 100 victories at the helm of the Sycamores. He needs five more to tie John Longfellow for fifth on the ISU all-time victories list. - Sophomore Brenton Scott owns 165 trifectas in his career which is third-best in the history of the program. In the Valparaiso game he moved past Eddie Bird for third on the all-time list. - Junior Matt Van Scyoc has scored over 1,000 career collegiate points as he tallied 807 in two prior seasons at The Citadel plus 360 with the Sycamores. He now has 1,172 career points scored during his career with the two institutions. - The Sycamores opened the season with back-to-back overtime games. It is the first time Indiana State has played consecutive overtime games since the season. Of the Sycamores first 12 games, eight have been decided by one possession or in overtime, including three of the last four victories. - Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing owns a school record five victories over nationally-ranked teams during his tenure, a new standard set on December 7 in the win over No. 15 Butler. - The Sycamores own a record in bounce-back games under seventh-year head coach Greg Lansing following a loss. - Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing led the Sycamores for the 200th time against Missouri-St. Louis. He is one of just four head coaches at Indiana State to coach at least 200 games. Duane Klueh, Royce Waltman and Gordon Stauffer are the others.

He is all-time in MVC games, including a mark at home and a record on the road. During his career, he is in all home games, on the road, in neutral court contests and in games decided by five points or less. Lansing is 2-13 against Wichita State and is 0-6 against the Shockers at home. With the Trees, Lansing is 9-8 in overtime games and 77-9 when holding teams to 63 points or less. Lansing led the Sycamores to the postseason in each of his first four seasons at the helm (2011 NCAA, 2012 CIT, 2013, 2014 NIT). Lansing is the second head coach to lead the Sycamores to the NCAA Tournament in their rookie campaign in the history of the program, with the other being Bill Hodges leading ISU to a 33-1 record and a Final Four appearance in the 1979 NCAA Tournament. Lansing was just the 14th rookie head coach in the history of the MVC to lead his team to 20 victories during their debut season. Lansing holds the school record for most victories over a nationally-ranked team (five) in the history of the program. Lansing is currently sixth on the Indiana State all-time coaching victories list and needs five more to tie John Longfellow for fifth. Television Particulars The Sycamores game vs. Wichita State will be televised regionally on FSN Midwest (Directv 671 & Dish 418) as well as Comcast Chicago (Directv 665 & Dish 429). Fans should check local cable listings in the state of Indiana to find your Fox Sports Indiana Plus Channel (due to a conflict with the Indiana Pacers). Time Warner Cable of Terre Haute will not carry the contest, however the game is available live world-wide on The Valley On ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app. A Little History Indiana State is currently in its 121st season of college basketball at the school. The Sycamores are 1,462-1,261 all-time on the hardwood. Brenton Scott Powers Sycamores To Double Overtime Victory Over Eastern Illinois Brenton Scott led the Sycamores with 23 points as Indiana State wrapped non-conference play with an double-overtime victory over Eastern Illinois inside Hulman Center. Scott added seven rebounds in 42 minutes of action. Scott hit a pair of jumpers early in the second overtime to give the Sycamores a fourpoint advantage and then his 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining in the second overtime staked the Sycamores to another late four-point edge which would not be overcome. Scott reached double figures scoring in all 12 non-conference contests and went over the 20-point mark a total of five times. Jordan Barnes Sparks Sycamores To EIU Second Half Comeback Indiana State freshman Jordan Barnes provided a spark in the second half to help the Sycamores to a thrilling double overtime victory over Eastern Illinois. Barnes scored 11 points to go with a career-high six assists and five rebounds in the win. A 3-pointer from Barnes mid-way through the second half sparked a run which helped stake the Sycamores to an eight point lead after trailing by as many as 13 points. Close Game Alert! Games involving Indiana State so far this season have, for the most part, come down to the wire. Eight of the first 12 games have been decided by just one possession or have entered overtime. 3 An Indiana State Win Over Wichita State Would... Give the Sycamores a victory in their Missouri Valley Conference opener for the fifth time in the last six years, including a 3-2 mark in openers against Wichita State (all at home). Snap and eight game skid against the Shockers dating back to a January 29, 2013 win at WSU and end an eight year losing streak at home to the Shockers dating back to an overtime win on February 19, secutive overtime games since the season when they dropped extra time decisions against Saint Louis and Eastern Illinois. It is the fifth time in school history the program has played back-to-back overtime games and the first time it has happened in the first two games of the year. ISU began the year with road games against Northern Illinois and Ball State -- both of which went an extra five minutes. For the season, Indiana State is 2-1 in overtime games, including an victory in double overtime on December 21 against Eastern Illinois. For Valley Openers The Indiana State Sycamores open Missouri Valley Conference play on December 28 at home against Wichita State. The Sycamores are currently in MVC openers, including 13 wins all-time in MVC openers which occur inside Hulman Center. Indiana State has won four of its last five Missouri Valley Conference openers. ISU is 2-2 all-time against Wichita State in MVC openers, with all four of those coming at home.\. The Sycamores have opened the league schedule against the Shockers in , , and Sycamores Own Third-Best Record In MVC Play Over Last Six Seasons In the last six seasons under the direction of head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores have amassed a total of 60 Missouri Valley Conference victories. Those 60 MVC wins by coach Lansing are second-most in the history of the program as he trails only Royce Waltman who won 69 league games during his tenure. Additionally, the 60 MVC victories for the Sycamores since the campaign ranks third-best among current conference members. Wichita State s 93 leads the league while Indiana State has 60 and Northern Iowa is second with 67. The next closest program behind the Sycamores in Evansville which owns 55 victories while Illinois State owns 53. Sycamores Tally School Record Fifth Victory Over Nationally-Ranked Team Under Lansing Indiana State ended a skid of nine loses to nationally-ranked teams when No. 15/16 Butler fell inside Hulman Center on Wednesday night by the score of Coach Lansing has led the Sycamores to a school-record five victories against nationally-ranked teams during his time at the helm of the program. He passed Bill Hodges (head coach of the Dream Team in ) and Royce Waltman (head coach of the Sycamores during back-to-back NCAA Tourney trips in 2000 & 2001) for the most in program history with the win over Butler. It was just the second victory for the Sycamores under Lansing at home against a nationally-ranked team and the first overall since a win at No. 21 Notre Dame in Sycamores Have Had Success In Bounce Back Games Under Head Coach Greg Lansing In the last seven seasons, the Sycamores have been known as a team with the ability to bounce back from defeat. Since the campaign, the Sycamores are in a game which follows a loss. Indiana State last rebounded from a loss at Valparaiso to down Eastern Illinois by the score of in double overtime. Clemons Sets New Career High At Valparaiso Indiana State senior guard Everett Clemons averaged scored 19 points and pulled down two rebounds as the Sycamores took on Valparaiso in their only contest this week. Clemons hit 6-of-8 shots from the field, including his only 3-point attempt and converted 6-of-7 free throws as he set a new career-high with 19 points. Clemons tried to spark a late rally by scoring seven points in a row down the stretch in the second half against the Crusaders. He added one assist and two steals at Valpo. Scott s 3-Point Shooting Moving Up ISU Career Ranks; Reaches 1,000 Career Points Indiana State junior Brenton Scott is continuing to make his mark on the Sycamore Basketball Record Book in regards to 3-point shooting and points scored. Through 75 career games he has hit pointers which ranks third-best all-time and is 50 behind Jordan Printy ( ) for second place. He has attempted pointers in his career which ranks fourth and needs 12 more attempts to move past Eddie Bird ( ) for third place. Scott also has scored 1,054 points in his career and is the 38th member of the Indiana State Basketball 1,000 Point Club. Scott also is the 13th member of the club (34.2 percent) either coached or recruited by current head coach Greg Lansing, the most members that one coach can claim as one of their pupils in the illustrious club. Through 10 games, Scott is averaging 19.7 points per game which is second in the Missouri Valley Conference. Sycamore Success Inside Hulman Center Under Greg Lansing The Sycamores are (.744) inside Hulman Center under seventh-year head coach Greg Lansing. The Sycamores have won 57 of their last 76 home games. Additionally, the Sycamores have won 41 of their last 54 MVC games at home. The Sycamores were 10-4 at home last season. Indiana State owns a win in their last meeting with every MVC opponent at home with the exception of Wichita State and Southern Illinois. The longest stretch of consecutive home victories is against Illinois State which has now reached nine. Indiana State is 4-1 this season at home. Oh So Close! Everett Clemons Nearly Posts Triple-Double At Ball State Indiana State senior guard Everett Clemons scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to record the Sycamores first double-double of the season as part of the overtime win over Ball State. He also posted a career-best nine assists (of the team s 13) and narrowly missed his first career triple-double and the first by a Sycamore since Jake Odum did it in the 2011 Old Spice Classic (now Advocare Invitational). Scott, who is the only returning first or second team all-conference selection from last season, picked up his first ever all-conference honor last year after being named The Valley s Freshman Of The Year in The Sycamores have had at least one all-conference selection in each of the last nine years which is the third-longest active streak among the current membership of the MVC. Sycamores Picked To Finish Sixth In Missouri Valley Conference Race Indiana State was picked to finish sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference according to a preseason poll of league head coaches, sports information directors and a media panel. Defending league champion Wichita State was also picked to win the league. The Sycamores are coming a record last year and a sixth place finish in the MVC race. Indiana State reached the semifinals of Arch Madness of the fourth time in the last six years last season. Brandon Murphy An MVC Scholar-Athlete Selection Indiana State sophomore Brandon Murphy carries a 3.25 GPA in Communications and was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team as an honorable mention selection. Murphy averaged 4.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. In MVC contests, Murphy averaged 5.3 rebounds per game to rank 12th in the league. He pulled down 2.0 offensive rebounds per game to rank third while his 2.4 offensive rebounds per MVC game was second in the conference rankings. Murphy posted his first career double figure scoring output with 10 points in a home court victory over Wyoming. He tallied a career-high 12 rebounds in an overtime contest at Missouri State. Greg Lansing Selected For Induction Into Iowa High School Basketball Hall Of Fame Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Basketball Hall of Fame as part of their 2016 class. Lansing and the other selected inductees were honored individually at halftime of the Iowa Class 4A State Championship Game at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on March 12. The IHSAA Basketball Hall of Fame is the highest honor the Iowa High School Board of Control can bestow on a high school coach or former player. Lansing graduated from Harlan High School in 1986, where he was coached by his father Dave, who was inducted into the IHSAA Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999 as a coach. The Lansing father/son combination of Dave and Greg are just the 10th father/son duo to both be inducted into the Hall of Fame since Up Next Indiana State plays its first Missouri Valley Conference road contest on Saturday, December 31 when they travel to Missouri State. TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State rallied from down 13 points and then outlasted visiting Eastern Illinois for a thrilling double overtime victory inside Hulman Center to wrap up non-conference play. Indiana State improved to 6-6 on the year while Eastern Illinois saw a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 8-5. It was the 90th all-time win for the Sycamores against Eastern Illinois -- the most victories over an opponent in program history. It was the first win over EIU inside Hulman Center since 2011 and the first in the series since a road victory against the Panthers in Brenton Scott led the way with 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Five Sycamores reached double figures scoring as Brandon Murphy posted a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Niels Bunschoten added 13 points while Everett Clemons added 13 points to go with seven rebounds. Freshman Jordan Barnes provided a second half spark as finished with 11 points, a career-best six assists and five rebounds. It was the first time since a double overtime contest at Loyola on January 30, 2016 that five Sycamores reached double figures scoring. Indiana State had a season-best 55 rebounds in the victory. It was the first time they went over the 50 rebound mark since a January 27, 2016 contest against Missouri State when they had 51. The Sycamores have now seen eight of the first 12 games this season go into overtime or decided by a single possession. Murphy scored on a put back with 3:59 left in the double overtime and then Scott hit a jumper on the next possession to take an lead. A pair of Clemons charity tosses with 2:05 left stretched the lead out to Cornell Johnson answered with a 3-pointer, but Murphy two charity tosses with 1:18 to go gave ISU an advantage. Four free throws from the Panthers made it a one-point game until Scott hit the biggest shot of the contest, a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 20 seconds remaining for the lead. Demetrius McReynolds answered with a lay-up to trim the edge down to just two points. ISU turned the ball over, but the Panthers gave it right back on a travelling call. Clemons hit 1-of-2 free throws with two seconds remaining for the lead. The hail mary was not answered for the Panthers and the Sycamores took the win. Montell Goodwin hit a 3-pointer with 3:49 remaining in the first overtime, but Scott answered with a triple of his own to tie the game at 70 with 2:51 on the clock. Mussa Dama hit a jumper and after an empty Sycamore possession, McReynolds hit one for the lead with 1:48 remaining. Scott connected on a driving lay-up and was fouled. He missed the free throw but Murphy grabbed the offensive rebound and after being fouled, hit 1-of-2 free throws to trim the deficit down to McReynolds scored again with 1:05 remaining to stretch the lead ou to 76-73, but Matt Van Scyoc hit a 3-pointer with 49 seconds left to tie the game at 76. 7 Greg Lansing Indiana State Head Basketball Coach Seventh Season Greg Lansing is in his seventh season as the head basketball coach at Indiana State. He previously spent eight seasons with the program as an assistant coach, including three as associate head coach. Lansing (South Dakota, 1990) is (.550) at the helm of the Sycamore basketball program. He owns a mark of in MVC games, including a record at home. During his career, he is in all home games with 32 road victories to his credit and is in games decided by five points or less. Lansing is 8-5 in the MVC Tournament, with four of those victories coming as the lower seeded team. Indiana State s game at Iowa in the 2014 NIT was Lansing s 100th as Indiana State head coach. His 115 career victories rank sixth on ISU s all-time win list. Running a well-rounded program, the Sycamores also two representatives on the MVC s Scholar Athlete Team as both Jordan Printy and Aaron Carter took those plaudits. The payoff for the Sycamores continued as ISU reached postseason play for the first since 2001 when they accepted a bid to the 2010 College Basketball Invitational, appearing in a road contest at Saint Louis. Lansing has been a key recruiter for many talented student-athletes. Lansing has also been a major part of the several all-conference accolades for several players, including Harry Marshall and Jay Tunnell, who took All-MVC honors following the campaign. During each year of Lansing s tenure, the Sycamores have participated in the Coaches Vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Challenge. For each of the last three years, Lansing has led a successful challenge to the state s lawmakers to wear sneakers with their suits during that same time frame as part of the program to promote cancer awareness. Through an invitation from State Representative Bob Heaton, who played for ISU on the team which advanced to the NCAA Final Four, ISU head coach Greg Lansing has visited the State House leaders to participate in the challenge. Lansing returned to Indiana State after a seven-year stint with the Iowa Hawkeyes. During Lansing s seven years as assistant coach at Iowa, the Hawkeye s went , received three NCAA Tournament invitations, three NIT appearances and won a pair of Big Ten tournament titles, the first of which came on four wins in four games making Iowa the first team in the Big Ten to accomplish such a feat. In , Iowa earned a 25-9 record, the second-most wins in school history, the first undefeated (17-0) home record in the school s history and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Iowa earned seven All-Big Ten selections, 17 Academic All-Big Ten selections and four Academic All-Americans. Lansing coached four of the last five Big Ten rebounding champions, three straight conference leaders in blocked shots and, the league s defensive player of the year. Three of his student-athletes reached the NBA and two from the team were invited to NBA camps. In Lansing s final two seasons of his first stint at Indiana State, the Sycamores posted back-toback winning campaigns for the first time since 1979 and When the Sycamores posted a record in 1998 it marked the first winning season for Indiana State since Indiana State advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both 2000 and Prior to joining the staff at Indiana State, Lansing was the head basketball coach at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa. Roosevelt had not had a winning season in 12 years before Lansing s initial season. The Roughriders went on to have back-to-back winning seasons under Greg s direction. Lansing earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Dakota in 1990 and a master s degree in counseling from USD in As a member of the Coyote basketball team Lansing helped South Dakota reach the NCAA Division II Tournament during his junior and senior seasons, the first NCAA invitation for USD since He was twice named the South Dakota Defensive Player of the Year. Greg is currently ranked among the leaders in career assists at USD. Following his playing career, Lansing served as a graduate assistant coach at South Dakota for two seasons. In he was a full-time assistant. Greg s father, Dave Lansing, coached high school basketball for 33 years in Iowa. Dave Lansing was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Coaches Hall of Fame during the 1999 Iowa boys state basketball tournament. Lansing s dad, his mother, Diane, his sister, Angela, and his nephew, Jordan, live in West Des Moines.
