trevecca nazarene university Nashville. Following a name change in 1901 that was accompanied by an enlarged curriculum, the school became Trevecca College, a name taken from an institution started in Wales in 1768 during the Wesleyan revival. The school moved from downtown Nashville in 1914 to a site on Gallatin Road in east Nashville; in 1935 the school moved to its present location on Murfreesboro Road in southeast Nashville. In 1917 Trevecca became an official college of the Church of the Nazarene and graduated its first four-year class in In 1969 it was accredited by the Southern Association of Schools; master s degree programs were added in education in 1984, in religion in 1987, and in organizational management in In 1995 the school became Trevecca Nazarene University. Founded in 1901 by the Reverend J. O. McClurkan, Trevecca Nazarene University was, at first, the Literary and Bible Training School for Christian Workers and was located on the site that is now the Ryman Auditorium in As a private, coeducational, liberal arts university, Trevecca is supported by the Church of the Nazarene in the southeastern United States. Trevecca s mission is to launch educated Christians to serve and lead wherever life may take them. Trevecca s professors and employees are committed to helping students make the leap into the future God has for them by providing the mentoring experience of a lifetime. The President Dan L. Boone became Trevecca s eleventh president in 2005 after having served in pastoral ministry for more than 30 years. A 1974 graduate of Trevecca, he earned a master s degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1977 and a doctorate in ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary in He began his pastoral ministry when he was in high school, and his last pastorate was at the College Church in Bourbonnais, Illinois. In that pastorate and previously at Trevecca Community Church of the Nazarene, he was a pastor to college students; hence, the college culture is one that he knows well. Dr. Boone has taught on the university and seminary levels and has been an instructor for the Salvation Army North Central Region. In October 2005 he taught Nazarene pastors in the Commonwealth of Independent States, the former Soviet Union. Trevecca is pleased to have Dr. Boone lead Trevecca into a new phase of its history. a word from our president It was no accident that St. Paul used words from the world of athletics to describe the life of a Christian. He understood that the two share much in common. Participation in athletics teaches lessons that help one mature, develop discipline, discover the joys of teamwork and community life, and produce a healthy life lessons which carry over into all parts of life. Those lessons are especially meaningful to persons of faith. I trust that your involvement with athletics will enrich your life and will bring a new dimension to it. I also hope that you will incorporate into your spiritual life the lessons learned in athletics so that, in the words of St. Paul, you will fight the good fight and run the good race. Dan L. Boone President Trevecca Nazarene University 3

SEASON REVIEW Trevecca Nazarene University Soccer Media Guide The Trevecca men s soccer team finished the year with a berth in the TranSouth Tournament. Though the men fell in the first round, they finished number six of 10 teams in the conference with a overall record and a 4-5 TranSouth mark. For the second consecutive year, the team earned the TranSouth Champions of Character Team Award. A highlight of the season was the 1-1 tie at NAIA No. 16 Goshen College to start the season. The team followed that accomplishment with a 2-1 overtime win at Spring Arbor College, Coach Jeff Carr s alma mater. The team finished the regular season with three consecutive wins. The streak started with a 3-0 win over Lyon College. The second win in the streak was a twoovertime win at Cumberland University, Trevecca s first win over Cumberland since the team defeated Cumberland 1-0. The team finished the regular season with a 2-0 win over visiting Freed-Hardeman. The team advanced to the TranSouth Tournament for the fourth time in school history where it fell in a 2-0 loss to Mid-Continent. James Lambley was selected TranSouth Co-Freshman of the Year after being selected TranSouth Defensive Player of the Week three times and NAIA Region-XI Defensive Player of the Week twice. Mark Foster was named the TranSouth Player of the Week once this season. Lambley and Foster were joined on the TranSouth Second Team by Calvin da Cunha and Alex Lorenz. Foster and Lorenz were named to the TranSouth Scholar-Athlete Team along with Josh Forth, Parker Hughes, Caylan Goodman, Jorge Hellu, and Andrew McGovern. Alex Lorenz Soccer Media Guide

SEASON PREVIEW The 2008 Trevecca Men s Soccer team chose the theme Field of Dreams for this season. Though many associate Field of Dreams with baseball because of the highly popular 1989 movie by the same name starring Kevin Costner, the term has spread to other sports as well. One of the tag lines to the movie could apply to all sports: If you believe the impossible, the incredible can happen. That expression seems to apply to this year s team. The 2008 Trojans return the nucleus of a team that lost five of its nine matches by one goal. The team reached the Tran- South playoffs and lost to Mid-Continent 2-0, a team that advanced to the NAIA National Championships. Trevecca coach Jeff Carr loves the chemistry of this year s team, but it doesn t stop there: This team has a chemistry I ve not seen in my time here at Trevecca. As important as that is, we also have what I feel is our most talented team with depth at several positions. Another difference over past years is the level of senior leadership we have. All these factors give us the ability to believe it is possible for incredible things to happen this season. The belief in the impossible begins with this year s six seniors. Their talent and, possibly more important, their leadership will be keys to making this season one of making the impossible reality. The group is led by Mark Foster. The Irishman is a leader on and off the pitch and has a great chance to become the school s career leading goal scorer this year. Maky Said is a tenuous worker, and wonderful things are expected of him in his final season. Gift Ndam will help shore up the defense this season because he is one of the most athletic and talented players on the team. Matthew Marrotte is playing for the first season this year. He has been a student at Trevecca but chose to come out for soccer this year for the first time. He is a left footer who will help on defense this year. Paul Butchard is fast and has been a dependable defender throughout his career. He will see opportunities for offense this season. Brad Camp is recovering from an injury, but his experience and skill will be counted on defensively. to build on last year s clutch goal in sudden death against Cumberland. Fernando Lopez has a great left foot and will be looked for more production in his second season. Craig Parker took a year off and returns looking for minutes as a defensive specialist. Alex Hodge has good size and will help strengthen the defense. Parker Hughes is a local product who might be the hardest worker on the team, and the coaching staff is pleased to see his return after a redshirt season. Trevecca coach Jeff Carr deems this year s recruits his best recruiting effort in his time at Trevecca. The sheer number only seven players makes one look closer. When one does, one sees a class that has a potential to make major contributions to this season s success. Hayden Coffman is considered one of the top graduating senior goalies from last year s Tennessee high school ranks. He should be a great leader and has tremendous athletic ability. John Sheets will contribute to the defense with his size and physical ability. Kyle Robertson is another player with size who has played at a high level in his high school career. Jordan Enix is very fast and appears to be a player who will be able to score early in his stay on the hill. Darragh Bugter is the youngest player (turns 17 in August) on the team and yet has experience playing at a high level of competition. He distributes the ball very well. Abel Kigwila brings speed and skill from his native Tanzania. Sam Madeley is a skilled striker who has a nose for the goal. Coach Carr believes that the returning players combined with the influx of new talent will see the offense swing some of those close calls into wins this season. The team will need the additional offense to battle through the tough TranSouth Athletic Conference schedule. The schedule is loaded with home games in September, but the month of October will be spent on the road. The dream is that the team will have enough success to return home in November for conference tournament games. The junior class will need to make significant contributions this year as well if the season is deemed a success. Caylan Goodman is the anchor to the defense with his size, excellent conditioning, and athlete ability. Alija Turkovic is a transfer striker, labeled the Bosnian Blast by Coach Carr. The possibilities for Turkovic are unlimited for this season. Gin Mung has improved every season and is an incredible worker at the wing. The sophomore class has ability and leadership qualities as well. Jonathan Guardarama will compete for a starting job in goal. Benji Bussell is recovering from surgery and hopes Mark Foster Trevecca Nazarene University 7

TROJANS Damon H. Petty, M.D. Specializing in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Offices in Nashville and Lebanon Trojan Soccer Facilities Trevecca s men s soccer team will find the Trevecca soccer facilities among the best in the NAIA. In the fall of 2001 Trevecca added a state-ofthe-art on-campus soccer facility with lights for night games. The field has undergone some major work in recent years to provide an even better playing surface than the original field had in The field is planted in hybrid Bermuda. Plans are being developed for upgrading the concession, restrooms, seating, and other fan comforts in the near future. The team has a brand new, modern locker room located directly adjacent to the Wellness Center. The new locker room allows student-athletes to relax and bond in their own space. The locker room is complete with wet facilities. The University recently expanded and upgraded the weight room with a full complement of free and machine weights as well as multiple cardiovascular machines. The athletic department also provides a fully staffed athletic training room. The training facility is staffed through a long-standing relationship with the renowned Baptist Sports Medicine Center. Trojan athletes are cared for by the same professionals who care for the Tennessee Titans and Nashville Predators Soccer Media Guide

Champions of Character Trevecca s men s soccer team was given the Champions of Character Team Award from the Tran- South men s soccer coaches for the season. Teams are selected based on how the players and coaches exhibit each of the five core character values of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative. Trevecca s men s soccer team has been involved in various community activities serving others. The team members have stepped up their level of respect for the game and the officials by significantly reducing the number of yellow and red cards handed out to them during the season.
