9 Men s Soccer (10-9-1) Heading into the 2002 campaign, Old Dominion head coach Alan Dawson proclaimed, we have no doubts that we can play with any team in country. That pre-season proclamation turned into reality when the record breaking 2002 version of the Old Dominion Monarchs earned a bid into the NCAA Soccer Cup for only the third time in the program s history. After completing a regular season with a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) record, ODU hosted Drexel in the first round of the CAA Tournament. The Dragons upset the Monarchs 2-1 in double overtime to, what most thought, end their season. However, almost half of their games were played against teams that were voted in the Top 25 at some point throughout the year. The Monarchs won three of those eight games, dropping #12 American, #24 Hofstra and #19 VCU, earning them an at-large birth in the 2002 NCAA College Cup. They were awarded with a first round matchup at home against former CAA foe University of Richmond. The Monarchs defeated the Spiders 3-0 for their first NCAA Tournament victory in Division I history. They moved on to visit the topseeded Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the second round. ODU and Wake went scoreless until the final minutes when the Deacons found the back of the net for the 1-0 victory. With the loss the Monarchs ended the season with a overall record. Junior forward Attila Vendegh continued to terrorize opposing defenses in his junior year at Old Dominion en route to solidifying his spot as one of the most decorated players in school history. He scored a career-high 16 goals en route to breaking the all-time school record for most goals with 46. He also had a career-best seven assists and 39 points and broke the school mark for career points with 108. Again this season Vendegh and sophomore defender Trevor McEachron racked up numerous postseason awards. Vendegh was named the CAA Player of the Year for the second straight season and made his third appearance on the All-CAA first team and the All-South Atlantic Region team. McEachron earned a spot of the All-CAA first team for the first time after earning second-team honors last year. He also made the All-South Region team and joined Vendegh on the All-State first team. 9

11 Women s Soccer (5-12-1) After graduating 12 studentathletes from the 2001 squad, the Old Dominion women s soccer program knew they would suffer some growing pains throughout the 2002 season. The Lady Monarchs restocked the roster with nine newcomers to help quicken the rebuilding process. Seven of those newcomers saw action in at least 16 games with four of them starting twelve or more contests. The team lost seven games by one goal en route to a record with a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) mark. ODU started the season losing five of their first six matchups, with their lone win coming in a 5-2 defeat over UMBC. Three of those losses came in one-goal fashion, including a 3-4 overtime loss at the hands of St. Johns. They ended a four-game losing streak with a 5-0 thrashing of American and then opened conference play with a 0-0 tie with James Madison, their second shutout in a row. They suffered three more losses before picking up two consecutive wins, 2-1 against UNCW and a 3-0 over Radford, Kristen Bailey s second shutout of the year. The Lady Monarchs would win only one more the rest of way as they picked up a second CAA win with a 4-1 triumph at home versus Drexel. They closed the season with close losses to Delaware, Towson and a heartbreaker with George Mason. ODU held a 1-0 lead over the visiting Patriots with less than 10 minutes left before GMU rallied to tie it and then fired the gamewinner with just two minutes remaining. Sophomore Ashley Kramer stepped up to lead the team in scoring with a team-high 6 goals and one assist. Maura Linz, the 2001 CAA Rookie of the Year, tallied eight assists, including an ODU record four against American. Freshmen Heather Vaughan and Laura Beeman were factors all season for the Lady Monarchs as they started 18 and 17 games respectively. 15 Swimming & Diving To persevere, one must experience hardship. In the Old Dominion men s and women s swimming and diving programs suffered another tough campaign as the men s team finished 3-8 while the Lady Monarchs ended the season with a record of 4-7 for the second consecutive season. Despite the disappointing record, several individuals turned in outstanding performances as the men s and women s teams finished seventh and eighth respectively at the 2003 Colonial Athletic Association Championship in Fairfax, VA. Sophomore Martin Lundgren turned in the best performance on the men s side, placing fourth in the 100 yard butterfly and third in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1: Two other Monarchs had strong performances, turning in top-five finishes; freshman Nate Tschohl finished fifth in the 200 yard butterfly and freshman Ryan Ashby took fourth in the 100 yard freestyle. On the women s side, junior Jessica Miller turned in a strong performance, finishing fourth in the 200 yard breastroke. Senior Sarah Mooney and freshman Liane Publow also had strong outputs. Mooney finished fifth in the 200 IM while Publow also turned in a fifth place performance in the 200 butterfly at the CAA Championships. Lundgren was named the Team Most Valuable Player for the men with the women s MVP going to Sarah Mooney. Lundgren tallied team-best highs in the 100 yard butterfly (50.68), 200 yard butterfly (1:52.33), 200 yard individual medley (1:58.07) and helped the team achieve best times in the 200 yard medley relay (1:37.26) and the 400 yard medley relay (3:33.44). Mooney posted team-best times in the 50 (24.64) and 100 yard freestyle (53.56), 100 (58.09) and 200 (2:04.81) yard backstroke, and 200 (2:07.37) and 400 (4:31.88) individual medley. As a team with no seniors in 02-03, the Monarchs hope to turn things around next year with more talent and experience returning. The women s team will be welcoming back Miller, one of the best breaststroke competitors in the conference, for her senior campaign as well as Publow, Lisa Rushfeldt and Shanna Rankin. The men will welcome back top performers Lundgren, Paul McGraw, and Brian Julich. 16 Men s Basketball (12-15) Led by the senior tandem of Ricardo Marsh and Rasheed Wright, the Monarchs won nine games in the Colonial Athletic Association, including two over two-time CAA Champions UNC Wilmington, as well as George Washington from the Atlantic 10. Marsh, the Old Dominion University Alumni Association Male Athlete of the Year, led the team in scoring at 16.7 points per game and rebounding at 8.3. He earned first team All-CAA honors, first team All-State honors and first team All-NABC District IV honors. Marsh ranked in the top five of the CAA in scoring (4 th ), rebounding (3 rd ), and field goal percentage (5 th ). He performed the double-double five times and led ODU in scoring 12 different times. Marsh joined the prestigious 1,000 career point club on Dec. 20 th against Dayton in a game played in the Ted Constant Convocation Center. He completed his career with 1,350 career points which rank him 20 th all-time at ODU, and Marsh hauled in 690 career rebounds which places him 15 th on the school s all-time list. Rasheed Wright, earned CAA All- Defensive honors, led the team in steals, and ranked second on the team in scoring, and led the team in free throw percentage at.782. Wright scored in double figures 23 of 26 games with a career high of 25 points against East Carolina. Wright completed his career with 1,185 career points, 131 career steals and 465 career rebounds. He also shot.768 from the free throw line. Wright joined the 1,000 career point club on Jan. 18 at Hofstra. Wright s 156 career three pointers ranks him fifth alltime at ODU, while his 131 career steals tie him with ODU Hall of Famer Jeff Furhmann ( 77) for 14 th spot. Both Wright and Marsh were named CAA Players of the Week. Marsh got the nod on Jan. 21, sharing the honor with Craig Callahan of UNCW. Marsh averaged 28.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals against Delaware and Hofstra. He scored a career high 30 against Delaware. Wright earned the honor the week earlier on Jan. 14 after averaging 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals in ODU s wins over UNCW and William and Mary. Both North Carolina natives played in the Portsmouth Invitation Tournament. Other solid seasons were performed by returnees Alex Loughton, Isaiah Hunter, Troy Nance, and John Waller. Loughton, a 6-9 freshman center averaged 8.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. He was selected to the CAA All-Rookie squad. Loughton was named CAA Rookie of the Week on Nov. 25 th after his 13 point, eight rebound performance against North Carolina. He was again awarded that honor on Feb. 18 th when he scored 13 points with nine rebounds against UNCW, and 13 points six rebounds against Towson. Isaiah Hunter was named CAA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 27 after his career high 17 point effort against George Mason. He scored in double figures ten times, including 16 points against George Washington and James Madison. He also hit the winning trey in ODU s victory at Drexel. In that game he hit 4-for-4 from three-point range. Troy Nance was third in the CAA in assists at 4.4 and second in the league again in assist/turnover ratio of 2.3. At the annual Big Blue Bar-B-Q, Waller was named the Most Improved, while Ricardo Marsh was again named the team Most Valuable Player. Rasheed Wright came away with two awards; the best defensive and the Paul Webb Best Represents. The Monarchs had what may be the best recruiting year in the CAA. ODU will have five newcomers and ten returnees( four sophomores). 16

18 Women s Basketball (21-12) COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONS Although the Lady Monarchs ushered in a new era with the opening of the brand new state-ofthe-art Ted Constant Convocation Center, some things still remained the same. Old Dominion captured its 12th straight CAA title since joining the league back in and upped its home court record in conference play to with a perfect 12-0 record against CAA opponents on its new home court. Other Lady Monarch traditions continued at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in The Lady Monarchs again remained one of the top teams in attendance ranking 13th in the nation among fellow Division I schools with 5,288 fans per game entering the turnstiles to cheer on the Old Dominion women. "The Ted" also continued the tradition of hosting the NCAA Tournament from the old Fieldhouse as the NCAA First and Second Rounds were brought to Norfolk in the building's first year. Old Dominion's tradition of excellence also continued on the court as the Lady Monarchs had their 12th straight 20 win campaign, finishing the year playing the second hardest schedule in the country. Nine of the Lady Monarchs' opponents, including eight of Old Dominion's non-conference opponents, in were either ranked or receiving votes in the national polls at the time of tip-off. Although the Lady Monarchs lost three conference games this past season, Old Dominion was still the team to beat in the conference. Old Dominion still ranked among the tops in stats among the 10-teams in the CAA including leading the league in scoring offense, field goal percentage, rebounding, and blocks. Nationally, the Lady Monarchs ranked fifth in the country in rebounding margin, grabbing 9.1 more rebounds per game than their opponents. Seniors, guard Okeisha Howard and forward Kim Giddens each closed out impressive four-year careers. Howard, who was named First Team All-CAA for the second time in her career and was the CAA Preaseason Player of the Year, finished her career at Old Dominion ranked 12th on the all-time scoring list (1,565) points. During the season the Lady Monarch point guard led her squad in scoring (14.8 ppg) and assists (4.7 apg), had five 20+ point scoring efforts, and collected her first career double-double with a 22 point and career-high 11 assist effort against Drexel. Giddens, who served as captain of the version of the Lady Monarchs, exhibited excellent leadership jumping into a starting position after serving as one of the top reserves during her first three seasons with Old Dominion. Giddens poured in career and Lady Monarch high 28 points in a near come back win at then # 13/15 Penn State and also set a CAA Tournament record grabbing 20 rebounds in a semifinal victory over James Madison. Veterans, junior forward Monique Coker and sophomore guard Shareese Grant, also had significant impact for the Lady Monarchs. Coker continued to be a force on the boards grabbing a team-leading 8.7 rebounds per game and was Old Dominion's third leading scorer averaging 10.5 points per game en route to being named Second Team All-CAA. Additionally, she was named to her third CAA All-Tournament team and led the Lady Monarchs with eight double-doubles on the year. Shareese Grant jumped into the starting line-up in just her second year on the team and proved to be one of the top guards in the league. Grant was second only to fellow guard and former high school teammate Okeisha Howard in scoring at a 12.6 clip and was also named the CAA Tournament's Most Valuable Player after averaging 16.7 points during the Lady Monarchs championship run. Grant was also among the toughest defenders on the squad being named to the CAA's All-Defensive Team. Coming off a two-year absence and injury to her ACL, redshirt freshman Corrina Turner steadily improved throughout the season and became one of most dominant centers in the CAA. Turner led the Lady Monarchs in shooting percentage (.585) and was second on the squad in rebounding collecting an average of 7.0 boards per outing. Junior guard Max Nhassengo and sophomore forward Paula Muxiri each made impressive debuts as well. Nhassengo, coming off an ACL injury, dazzled fans and frustrated opponents with her lightening quick speed, while Muxiri was relied upon to come off the bench to help the Lady Monarch defense come up with big stops on the other end of the court. 18
