5 Dr. Craig Turner President Dr. W. Craig Turner became the 21st President of Catawba College in He came to Salisbury from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, where he served as President for six years. Dr. Turner joined the administration and faculty of Hardin-Simmons University in 1992, serving as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of English from 1992 to He then became Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer until he was named Chief Operating Officer in June Dr. Turner then served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at HSU for a year before becoming the 14th President of Hardin-Simmons University on June 1, During his tenure as President, HSU saw record enrollments (2,435 in the fall of 2007), record endowment and similar funds ($121.5 million in 2007), and surplus budgets. HSU finished the most successful fund raising campaign in its history in December of 2006, having raised $49.7 million. The University successfully completed its Commission on Colleges reaccreditation in 2007, has been chosen as a Top Tier institution by U.S. News & World Report for six consecutive years and a Best in the West institution by Princeton Review for five consecutive years. Dr. Turner was active in the Abilene, Texas, community, serving on the Boards of organizations such as United Way of Abilene, the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Serenity House, the Abilene Philharmonic, and the Abilene Humanities Council. He has also served on the Boards of the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities, the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas, the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Schools, and the Consortium for Global Education, which he currently chairs. Dr. Turner came to HSU from Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi, where he was Head of the English Department and Professor of English from 1985 to While there, he was chosen as Teacher of the Year, cited as Scholar of the Year, and elected President of the Faculty. H is wife, Annette, served the Clinton Independent School District as a first grade teacher. Previously, he served as a tenured Assistant and Associate Professor of English at Texas A&M University from 1976 to 1985 and as a visiting instructor at Baylor University in Dr. Turner earned the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Tulane University in British and American Literature in 1977, and earned two degrees from Baylor: the Master of Arts in English in 1971 and the Bachelor of Arts in English and History in He has edited three books The Poet Robert Browning and his Kinsfolk, Critical Essays in American Humor, and Critical Essays in Eudora Welty as well as having published more than two dozen scholarly articles, essays, and chapters in books. Since he greatly enjoys teaching, he tries to schedule a course every other year to stay active in the profession and in the classroom. Dr. Turner and wife Annette have two grown children: Scott, a Development Officer for Texas Tech University, and Shannon Hays, an attorney, writer, and mother. Shannon and her husband Mike, a Marine Corps Captain, have twin daughters, Madeleine and Peyton. Dennis Davidson Director of Athletics Dennis Davidson has been director of athletics since May of He came to Catawba College in July 1984 as director of public information and moved totally into sports information one year later. In 1991, Davidson was promoted to assistant to the athletic director, and in 1993, he was promoted to assistant athletic director for game operations, in addition to the sports information duties. Davidson oversees the entire athletic program at Catawba. He has also been responsible for securing athletic advertising and sponsorships and has had significant roles in Catawba s Sports Hall of Fame inductions, the South Atlantic Conference Spring Sports Festival and the year-end athletic ceremony. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and was a member of the regional advisory committee for NCAA Division II football ( ). Davidson is currently the South Atlantic Conference AD liaison for baseball and women s basketball and chairman of the SAC Athletic Directors Council. Davidson was also highly involved in the planning of the Hayes Field House and Shuford Stadium reconstruction. He also has directed the highly popular Sam Moir Christmas Basketball Classic since A former member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Davidson was chairman of the NAIA District 26 SIDs and the Carolinas Conference Awards Committee for three years ( ). He was voted by his peers as District 26 SID of the Year for and Born in Statesville, but reared in Salisbury, Davidson graduated in 1977 from West Rowan High School, where he was a fouryear letterman in baseball, earning All-North Piedmont Conference honors as a senior. Davidson earned a bachelor s degree in English at Catawba in 1981, working as a part-time writer at The Salisbury Post during his college years. He actually began at The Post as a 16-year-old sportswriter in A member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, Davidson is president of the Westside Pool Association. He is also a member of the PTA at Southeast Middle School. Davidson resides in Salisbury with his wife, Toni, a registered nurse at Lexington Memorial Hospital. They have three daughters, Bethany (21), a senior at Catawba, Katie (18), a freshman at Catawba, and Carrie (13) CATAWBA TENNIS

8 Catawba Coaches Jeff Childress- Head Coach Jeff Childress returned to Catawba in 2004 to assume the duties of Director of Tennis, which includes coaching both the men s and women s intercollegiate teams. He also serves as Assistant Athletic Director. Childress previously coached men s tennis at Catawba from During those seven years, Catawba compiled a record and earned two trips to the NCAA II regional tournaments, hosting the event in1996. He took over a depleted squad and after two rebuilding seasons, Catawba posted a record over the final five years, including a 26-5 mark in Childress left Catawba in 1998 to become the Director of Athletics at Pfeiffer University, where he served in that capacity through Last season, he served as men s tennis coach and Sports Information Director. Childress played tennis for four years at Pfeiffer University from He served as the graduate assistant for the men and women's tennis teams at East Carolina University from Childress received his MA.Ed from East Carolina in In December of 2003, Childress was awarded the USTA's Southern Section Community Service Award. Childress is a USTPA certified teaching tennis professional and also is the Director of the Salisbury City Park Tennis program. Childress served as the South Atlantic Committee Chair for men's tennis, served on the NCAA II East Regional committee, served as the CVAC Athletic Director liaison for men and women's tennis and served as the Catawba College Tennis Camp Director for seven years. In the last five years, Childress has won both the Rowan County and Stanly County singles titles and is a lifetime member of the USTA. Childress has completed two marathons and also enjoys swimming, golf, and biking. Childress is married to Dr. Donna Childress, who is employed at Rowan Diagnostics. They have two sons, Michael Thomas (11),0 Benjamin (7), and Lauren (3). The Childress family resides in Salisbury. Asst. Coach Johnson Tennis Center Bill Leonard The Catawba Tennis Center has been home to the Catawba Indians since It was named in honor of Allen Johnson, Jr. Johnson was a business leader and former All-America athlete. The complex is comprised of six courts, which is divided into three two-court sections, and is lighted for night play. The courts have served as site of several conference championships during the South Atlantic Conference Spring Sports Festival in the 1990s. 10 Sophomore: Had a 5-6 record in singles, including a 3-1 mark at #5. In doubles action he partnered mainly with Cyle Peterson at the #3 flight. The duo compiled an 8-7 record. Overall, Eldridge was 9-8 in doubles. High School: Four-year starter at Washington Township High School and played #1 singles. Was named South Jersey All-Group IV and was team captain. He also helped the Minutemen to Group IV State semifinals. Has interest in accounting. 36 ATHLETIC TRAINING CHRISTY ARMSTRONG, MS, ATC, LAT Christy Armstrong arrived at Catawba College in 2007 as assistant athletic trainer and instructor. She provides the medical coverage for Men s and Women s Cross Country, Men s and Women s Golf, Men s and Women s Tennis, Men s and Women s Basketball and Cheerleading. Armstrong also travels with both basketball teams. Along with head athletic trainer Robert Casmus, Armstrong and fellow assistant athletic trainers Rob Dingle, Michael Eden and Travis Armstrong, instruct approximately 20 student athletic training students in the various educational components of athletic training. They also supervise the students in the clinical aspects as they care for Catawba s athletes. Armstrong earned a mater s degree in sports health care from A.T. Still University, The Arizona School of Health Sciences in Mesa, Arizona in While in Arizona, Armstrong worked one year as a graduate assistant for Mesquite High School, the largest 5A high school in Arizona. She also worked one year as a graduate assistant for Grand Canyon University, a NCAA Divison II college in Phoenix. In 2005, Armstrong earned a bachelor s degree in athletic training and graduated cum laude from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While at UNC Charlotte, she completed a variety of internships in athletic training and orthopedic clinical settings. Armstrong won the Dr. Harvey F. Murphy academic excellence award, given to the athletic training student with the highest GPA. Armstrong and her husband, Travis, who is also an assistant athletic trainer at Catawba, reside in Salisbury. John D. Coble Athletic Training Room The John D Coble athletic training room is located on the bottom floor of the Abernathy physical education building and provides the medical care for 13 of Catawba s 19 sports. Prior to 2002, when the Hayes Field House was completed, all athletic teams used this facility. Over the past 40 years, the athletic training room has been expanded and improved to its current size of???? square feet. Athletes receive injury prevention, assessment, management and rehabilitation here. There are 7 treatment tables and 3 taping tables available. The facility provides state-of-the art modality treatment, which includes ultrasound, electrical stimulation, diathermy and a hydrotherapy room for hot or cold whirlpools. In addition, a portion of the facility is equipped with rehabilitation equipment such as a stationary bike, elliptical, stair stepper, Biodex total body gym, physioballs and free weights. 40 NCAA Compliance PROSPECTIVE STUDENT- ATHLETE You are a prospective student-athlete when you start ninth-grade classes. You become a recruited student-athlete at a particular college if any coach or representative of the college s athletics interest (booster or representative) approaches you (or any member of your family) about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. Activities by coaches or boosters that cause you to become a recruited prospective student-athlete are: -providing you with an official visit; -visiting you or any other member of your family anywhere other than the college campus; -placing more than one telephone call to you or any other member of your family; or -Signing a National Letter of Intent. 41 ADMISSIONS Inquiries regarding admissio n to Catawba College are always warmly welcomed. If you are interested in joining the Catawba community you should apply for admission anytime after your sixth semester of high school. Catawba follows the usual guidelines for rolling admissions and, therefore, has no closing date for accepting applications. Applying early will ensure you an early response from the college. In your application, you are asked to provide a wide variety of information relating to your academic and co-curricular background. this information is used to help determine your potential to profit from, as well as contribute to, the Catawba community. You must complete a minimum of 16 units of high school course work, 12 of which should be in academic subjects. The following college preparatory course work is strongly rocommended: four units of English; three units of mathematics (Algebra I or above); three units of Laboratory Science; three units of Social Science; and two units of foreign language.
