5 UCF BASKETBALL PRESEASON INFORMATION COACH SPEAK Head coach Kirk Speraw on the Golden Knights What challenges does the program face as it moves from the Atlantic Sun into Conference USA? It is an exciting step, but a huge challenge as well. We are going to play a better caliber of opponent on a nightly basis. We are going to play in front of much more hostile crowds than our guys have been accustomed to. The travel is going to be tougher and more extensive. Overall, the level of intensity and competitiveness will be a huge change for our guys. Hopefully, they can adjust to that rather quickly. How will you replace the leadership lost when Marcus Avant, Kingsley Edwards and Gary Johnson graduated after last season? In college athletics, you always have that turnover of losing veterans to graduation. We are certainly losing our leadership from Gary Johnson, Kingsley Edwards and Marcus Avant. I think we have a solid foundation where we can build and move forward with this year s team. It will be interesting who emerges as a vocal leader or even a quiet leader. We are looking at Josh Peppers, who will be a junior, and hope that he has made some progress in that leadership role. Our seniors will also be a factor as well. I think that Mike O Donnell is a young man coming in who will be assertive and aggressive in trying to motivate his teammates. How did playing Connecticut, the defending national champions at the time, to a close game in the 2005 NCAA Tournament help this season s team? Hopefully, that will increase their (the UCF players) confidence level in their own abilities and the abilities of this basketball team. We did play exceptionally well in the second half and kind of ran out of time against UConn. I think our players will come back after that with a level of confidence and maturity that will be beneficial to this year s team. What player do you expect to take his game to a new level in C-USA? With Anthony Williams in his second year in the program, hopefully he will feel more comfortable and understand where his opportunities are going to come from. We expect him to make better decisions on some of those scoring opportunities, but also be more aggressive rebounding on both ends of the floor. I think Anthony could be one of those guys where in his second year (with the team), he can make some significant improvements. Who will replace Gary Johnson at point guard? There will be competition at the point guard spot between Mike (O Donnell), Dave (Noel) and even Justin Rose a little bit. All three of those guys can run the point. We will see who runs the team the best and who can get the ball to the right people. Also, defend the way we need a point guard to defend. We have a very intelligent guard core. Collectively, they possess good instincts, good knowledge and skills. What kind of contributions at point guard do you expect from sophomore transfers Dave Noel and Mike O Donnell? They know the (UCF) system, but they have been out of competitive basketball for a year. It will be a transition year for them, to get their feet back in a competitive environment. The change of speed from practice and games will be different. What are your thoughts on the challenging non-conference schedule, which includes games at Florida and Kentucky and an appearance in Arizona s Fiesta Bowl Classic. I think it will help us understand how good this (UCF) team is before getting into C-USA. Our kids enjoy stepping up to those challenges to play those types of people. PRESEASON NOTEBOOK Coming off of its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, UCF will be looking to record its fourth-straight 20- victory season. A year ago in the NCAA Tournament, UCF earned the No. 15 seed in the Syracuse Regional and faced Connecticut, the defending national champions. The Huskies led by as many as 19 in the second half, but UCF mounted a comeback to get within six with under four minutes to play. Connecticut held on for a victory. The Golden Knights return three starters from last season s squad, including the team s second-leading scorer in junior forward Josh Peppers. Peppers averaged a career-best 13.1 points per game last season. As a freshman in , he averaged just 3.8 points an outing. Last season, he led the team in scoring on 11 occasions and posted 25 double-digit scoring performances. Senior forward Anthony Williams started 32 of 33 contests in and averaged 11 points and a team-high 5.6 boards per game. He shot 54.2 percent from the floor and blocked 53 shots. WIlliams tallied six double-doubles, including five in Atlantic Sun Conference play. After playing 21 minutes per game off of the bench last year, senior Justin Rose will compete for a starting guard position. He was the Golden Knights top reserve scorer, averaging 6.7 points per contest. Rose shot 50.5 percent from the field and also averaged 4.3 boards. UCF will have the services of sophomore guards Dave Noel and Mike O Donnell, who both sat out last season after transferring from UNC-Wilmington and NC State, respectively. Both players will compete for time at point guard. Carlton Christian, a transfer from Marquette, will see time at shooting guard and small forward. Entering his 13th season at UCF, head coach Kirk Speraw is five victories shy of the 200-win mark. Speraw has guided the Golden Knights to all four of their NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to his arrival before the campaign, UCF had never posted a winning record at the Division I level. UCF ended the campaign in style, winning 12 of its last 14 games. The team closed out the regular season with a fivegame winning streak. After dropping three-straight contests in January, UCF claimed nine of 10 to end the regular season. The Golden Knights will have to replace point guard Gary Johnson, who led the team in scoring last season as a senior with 13.6 points per game. Johnson established a school single-season record with 103 three-pointers. The Golden Knights return 61.8 percent of their scoring from last season. All seven of UCF s returners saw time in at least 23 games and all but one player (Adam Gill) averaged at least 10 minutes per outing. 6 UCF BASKETBALL COACHING STAFF KIRK SPERAW HEAD COACH 13TH SEASON AT UCF THE SPERAW FILE Kirk Speraw has never been the type of coach to back away from a challenge. When he first arrived as a head coach at UCF 13 years ago, the school had never posted a winning season at the Division I level. In fact, when Speraw walked onto UCF s campus in 1993, the Golden Knights had not won more than 10 games in a campaign in over a decade. Simply put, the program was nowhere to be found on the national basketball map. In his first season at the helm of the Golden Knights, he led his team to a 21-9 mark, an Atlantic Sun Conference title and the school s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Since that impressive rookie season in , Speraw has built UCF into not only a perennial power in the state of Florida, but also a nationally recognized program. Entering the campaign, there are new obstacles for his squad. UCF is beginning its inaugural season in Conference USA, one of the most competitive leagues in the country. In the 10 years since its inception, C-USA has sent two teams to the Final Four and has produced numerous All-America selections. UCF, a school that before Speraw s arrival, had difficulties winning against Division I opponents, will now regularly face storied basketball programs with impressive legacies. If his coaching history is any indication, there is little doubt that Speraw and the Golden Knights will succeed in their new league and handle all of the challenges. Since the season, Speraw s Golden Knights have posted a record. The 70 victories rank 23 rd nationally during that span. The squad has won at least 20 games in each of the last three years. A year ago, in their last season in the A-Sun, the Golden Knights posted one of the most impressive campaigns in school history. UCF went 24-9 and claimed its first A-Sun regular season crown before winning the conference championship title. Speraw s team made its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 2005, meeting the defending National Champion Connecticut Huskies in the first round. Under Speraw, the Golden Knights have advanced to the Big Dance on four occasions. Several individuals garnered accolades for their play during the campaign. Gary Johnson was named the MVP of the A- Sun Championship and was joined on the all-tournament team by Josh Peppers. Both Johnson and Peppers garnered spots on the all-conference second team at the end of the regular season. Johnson sank 103 three-point field goals on the year, establishing a new program single-season record. UCF s 283 treys were also a school record. On the defensive end, the team blocked 143 shots, the most in Golden Knight history. As a team, UCF peaked at the right time, winning 12 of its last 14 contests. The squad concluded the regular season with a fivegame winning streak. Speraw enters this season only five victories shy of 200 career wins at the Division I level with a mark. His 195 wins rank second in the UCF annals. Under his watch, UCF dominated the competition in the A-Sun. Speraw led the Golden Knights to a record in league contests. The Golden Knights were just as impressive in the conference tournament. The team sits atop the league record books with a 21-7 (.750) tournament mark, seven finals appearances and four title PERSONAL Hometown: Sioux City, Iowa Family: Wife - Tracy, Sons - Drew and Dustin, Daughters - Brooke and Bailey PLAYING EXPERIENCE Iowa COACHING EXPERIENCE Iowa Assistant Coach Denver Assistant Coach Florida Southern Assistant Coach Pensacola JC Head Coach Florida Assistant Coach UCF Head Coach NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES 1993, 1996, 2004, 2005 CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT TITLES Atlantic Sun: 1993, 1996, 2004, 2005 CONFERENCE REGULAR SEASON TITLES Atlantic Sun: COACHING HIGHLIGHTS Has led UCF to four NCAA Tournament appearances Guided UCF to its first conference regular season title in Ranks second at UCF in all-time victories Four 20-plus victory seasons Has coached two current NBA players Named the CollegeInsider.com A-Sun Coach of the Year Has coached 15 all-conference performers NABC/Kodak National Junior College Coach of the Year Florida Junior College Coach of the Year victories. As Speraw enters his 13 th season, it marks the second longest tenure of any men s basketball coach in UCF history. Only Torchy Clark spent more time on the UCF sideline than Speraw. Clark, a member of the school s athletics hall of fame, guided the Golden Knights for 14 seasons ( ). Nationally, Speraw is one of only 29 coaches who have spent at least 12 seasons with their current school. With a 25-6 record, UCF recorded one of the best campaigns in program history during the season. The team compiled a 14-game winning streak, its longest since entering the Division I ranks. The Golden Knights rolled through A-Sun play with a 17-3 mark. With a victory over Troy in the conference championship title game, UCF claimed its first tournament crown since 1996 and

7 UCF BASKETBALL COACHING STAFF advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The squad earned a No. 14 seed in the tournament (the best seed given to a UCF squad) and faced Pittsburgh in the first round. A pair of players garnered all-league honors as Dexter Lyons was a first team selection and Roberto Morentin was named to the second team. Lyons also earned the first A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year honor in addition to receiving the A-Sun Championship MVP honor. Speraw led UCF to its first of three consecutive trips to the A- Sun Championship final in His team completed the campaign with a record the first 20-win season at UCF in eight years. The highlight of the season came on Dec. 12 at home when the Golden Knights defeated No. 25 College of Charleston, 82-64, to record the first win in school history against a nationally-ranked foe. After winning just eight games the previous season, Speraw s squad registered a overall mark. In , he led an injury-plagued squad to 11 victories in their final 17 contests and a trip to the A-Sun Championship title game. Despite facing four nationally ranked opponents, UCF recorded a record, including a 13-3 mark in the A-Sun, in The team advanced to the A-Sun final, dropping the championship game to Samford. Brad Traina earned first-team all-league honors following the regular season. During Speraw s tenure, 15 of his players have garnered allconference accolades, including four first-team members (Lyons, Traina, Mark Jones and Ochiel Swaby). Jones was named the A- Sun Player of the Year in , while also winning the newcomer of the year award that same season. Three Golden Knight standouts who played under Speraw - Traina, D Quarius Stewart and Paul Reed - are members of UCF s 1,000-point club. Reed and Mario Lovett, who was also coached by Speraw, are two of the five players in UCF history to grab at least 600 rebounds. Since his arrival in Orlando, Speraw has stressed success in the classroom as well as strong play on the court. During the campaign, four UCF student-athletes were recognized as A-Sun All-Academic honorees with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. Dating back to the season, 47 of Speraw s players have earned all-academic recognition by the league. Following the season, Morentin was named to the CoSIDA Academic All- America District III Team. Behind Jones, who averaged just over 20 points per game, the team went That squad concluded the regular season with a seven-game winning streak. In , Speraw s Golden Knights entered the A-Sun Championship with a No. 6 seed. His team reeled off three victories at the tournament, including an win over Mercer in the finals to claim the league crown. UCF advanced to the NCAA Tournament, facing top-seeded Massachusetts in the opening round. In his first season in Orlando in , Speraw inherited a team that went just the previous season. He molded his squad, which was playing its first season as a member of the A-Sun, into one of the finest teams in school history, finishing the campaign with a 21-9 record its first 20-win season at the Division I level. The Golden Knights bowled over competition at the conference championship. The team topped Stetson, 70-67, in the title game to earn its first trip to the NCAA Tournament. In his first season as a Division I head coach, Speraw guided his squad to the Big Dance. Making its first national television appearance, UCF faced top-seeded Purdue in the first round of the tournament. Speraw has enjoyed success on every rung of the coaching ladder. He came to UCF after a three-year stint as an assistant at the University of Florida under Lon Kruger. Prior to that, he posted three solid campaigns as the head coach at Pensacola Junior College, starting in During his stint at PJC, Speraw led the Pirates to an record and three consecutive Panhandle Conference titles. His team posted a 31-7 mark and finished fifth nationally in That season, Speraw was honored as the NABC/Kodak National Junior College Coach of the Year, as well as the Florida Junior College Coach of the Year. Before moving to the bench at PJC, he served as an assistant at Florida Southern under George Schultz from During his time at Florida Southern, the Moccasins posted a overall record and made four appearances in the Division II NCAA Tournament, finishing third in 1986 and advancing to the final eight in Speraw helped recruit and mentor four first-team All-America selections at Florida Southern, including Jerry Johnson and Kris Kearney, who both earned national player of the year honors. A native of Sioux City, Iowa, Speraw played collegiately at the University of Iowa for head coach Lute Olson. He was a member of the Hawkeye squad that won the Big Ten title. As a senior, he was named the team s most inspirational player. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, serving as a graduate assistant with Iowa s team that advanced to the Final Four. Speraw then moved on to the University of Denver for two seasons. At Denver, he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator while pursuing an M.B.A. Speraw is a devoted family man. 21 UCF BASKETBALL REVIEW In Review UCF concluded the campaign with a 24-9 mark and its second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Knights posted their third consecutive 20-victory season and claimed the fourth Atlantic Sun Championship title in school history after taking a share of the regular season crown for the first time. The team finished the season in strong fashion, winning 12 of its last 14 contests. Dating back to the start of the campaign, UCF has won 70 games, a mark that ranks 23rd nationally and first in the state of Florida during that span. A-SUN CHAMPS AGAIN Making its final appearance in the Atlantic Sun Championship, UCF dominated the competition on its way to the conference tournament crown. The squad topped Gardner-Webb, 63-54, in Nashville to take its second-straight title. All of UCF s four league crowns, which are the most in A-Sun history, have come under head coach Kirk Speraw. The Golden Knights became the first team to capture backto-back tournaments since Samford (1999, 2000). TOURNAMENT TIME Playing in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, UCF earned the No. 15 seed in the Syracuse Regional. The Golden Knights met No. 2 Connecticut in Worcester, Mass. in front of a national television audience on CBS. The defending national champion Huskies led by as many as 19 in the second half, but UCF mounted a comeback to get within six with under four minutes to play, but Connecticut held on for a victory. Gary Johnson sank seven three-pointers, one shy of the UCF singlegame record, on his way to a career-best 29 points. Will Bakanowsky added 15 points and seven boards for the Golden Knights, who were playing a postseason contest in New England for the second time. UCF met Massachusetts in Providence, R.I. in the first round of the 1994 NCAA Tournament. MVP, MVP After averaging 16.7 points and four rebounds at the event, Gary Johnson was named the Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP. He sank 11 three-pointers at the championship. In the title game versus Gardner- Webb, Johnson recorded a game-high 19 points and added five boards. Josh Peppers, who averaged 14.3 points and five boards, joined Johnson on the all-tournament team. DOMINATING DEFENSE Defense was the key for the Golden Knights at the Atlantic Sun Championship. The team held all three of its opponents to below 40 percent shooting from the floor. UCF s foes hit just 66-of-175 (37.7 percent) of their field goal attempts during the tournament. AWARD TOUR A pair of Golden Knights Gary Johnson and Josh Peppers were named to the Atlantic Sun All-Conference Second Team following the regular season. CollegeInsider.com tabbed Johnson as its conference player of the year. PEPP STEPS UP After UCF lost its top three scorers and 60 percent of its offensive output from , many observers wondered where the Golden Knights would get their points from last season. Enter Josh Peppers. As a freshman in , he averaged just 3.8 points per game. A year later, he was the squad s second-leading scorer at 13.1 points an outing. Peppers paced the team in scoring on 11 occasions and posted 25 double-digit scoring performances. IRONMEN Four Golden Knights Kingsley Edwards, Gary Johnson, Troy Lindbeck and Anthony Williams appeared in all 33 contests last season. The 33 games played placed the four atop the UCF all-time register for most contests in a single season. BOMBS AWAY UCF hit 283 treys last season to establish a new single-season program record. The previous single-season high was 233, set in Gary Johnson (right) sank 103 three-pointers the most by a Golden Knight in a single year. He ranked 15 th nationally, hitting 3.1 shots from deep each game. WHAT AN ENDING The Golden Knights ended the campaign in style, winning 12 of their last 14 games. The team closed out the regular season with a five-game winning streak. After dropping three-straight contests in January, UCF claimed nine of 10 to end the regular season. POST PRESENCE In his first season in Orlando, junior-college transfer Anthony Williams developed into the Golden Knights main option in the post. Williams averaged 11 points per game on the year and also paced the team in rebounding (5.6). He posted six double-doubles, including five in conference play and shot 54.2 percent from the floor. His 31 point effort at Jacksonville marked the most points scored by a UCF player during the campaign. A COLD BEGINNING UCF opened the season way up north, competing in the BP Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Golden Knights won the tournament, winning all three of its games. The team was playing in Alaska for the first time in school history. Gary Johnson and Anthony Williams were both named to the all-tournament team. Johnson also earned event MVP honors. TRIPLE YOUR PLEASURE Kingsley Edwards registered the first triple-double for UCF since the season with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists at home against Troy. The 14 assists tied a school record. On the year, Edwards paced the Golden Knights with 137 assists. BLOCK PARTY With 143 blocks last year, the Golden Knights set a school singleseason record. The previous high was 141, set only a year earlier. Anthony Williams led the squad with 53 blocks. A ROSEY START Justin Rose made the most of his first season at UCF. The juniorcollege transfer quickly became the team s top perimeter player off the bench and finished the season as the Golden Knights leading reserve scorer, averaging 6.7 points per contest. Rose shot 50.5 percent from the field and also averaged 4.3 boards. He averaged 21.4 minutes per game.
