The site features updated notes, statistics, rosters and press releases. CAREER-NIGHT FOR LINDBECK Troy Lindbeck started the season in style against Rollins. In 26 minutes off of the bench, the senior guard hit five triples on his way to a career-high 20 points. Lindbeck was 5-of-9 from the floor with all of his attempts coming from deep. APPROACHING A MILESTONE Kirk Speraw has 196 victories and needs just four wins to reach the 200-career victory mark. Speraw would join Eugene Torchy Clark as the only two coaches in UCF history to win at least 200 contests. THE BENCH SQUAD Behind 20 points from Troy Lindbeck, UCF s bench accounted for 33 points against Rollins. In his Golden Knight debut, Lavell Payne totaled nine points in a reserve role. GREAT STARTS Dating back to the season, the Golden Knights are 14-2 in the month of November. A year ago, the team went 4-0 during the month. The mark included three victories on the way to the BP Top of the World Classic title in Fairbanks, Alaska. Under head coach Kirk Speraw, the team is in November. UCF-NOVA SOUTHEASTERN CONNECTIONS Nova Southeastern forward Paul Sinclair attended Dillard High School in Ft. Lauderdale, the same school that produced UCF s Lavell Payne. FILLING THE BOX SCORE Making his first start as a Golden Knight, Justin Rose had a complete game against Rollins, recording his first career doubledouble with 12 points and 10 boards. The 10 rebounds were a career-high. Rose also posted five assists, two steals and two blocks. STATE SUCCESS UCF will begin the season with seven-consecutive games against in-state opponents. Since the start of the campaign, UCF is 22-9 against in-state opponents. Last season, the squad went 3-2 versus Florida programs after posting a 7-1 mark versus in-state teams in TORCHY CLARK COURT At halftime against Rollins on Nov. 18, UCF honored a former coaching great when the UCF Arena was renamed Torchy Clark Court. Eugene Torchy Clark, who served as the first head coach in school history, guided the Golden Knights from During his 14 seasons at UCF, the Golden Knights posted a (.754) mark and the program became a state and national power at the Division II level, making six NCAA Tournament appearances. In 1978, Clark guided UCF to the Division II Final Four and the team finished the year with a 26-4 record, the best in school history. His 274 victories are the most in school history. The arena floor will be the only court at the Division I level in the state of Florida to honor an individual. PACKING THE HOUSE On Nov. 18, UCF faced cross-town opponent Rollins in front of 3,051 fans - the seventh-largest crowd in UCF Arena history. A year ago, the Golden Knights averaged 1,283 fans. All-time, the Golden Knights have won at least 20 contests in a single campaign on 11 occasions, with four coming during the Kirk Speraw era. There have never been four straight 20 win seasons in school history. STREAKS UCF has a handful of streaks active: Two consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. Three consecutive 20-win seasons. A six-game regular season winning streak. A six-game home winning streak. A WHOLE NEW LEAGUE UCF is in its first campaign as a member of Conference USA after moving from the Atlantic Sun. The Golden Knights dominated competition in the A-Sun, winning 53 conference games in the last four years and claiming a pair of league tournament titles. C-USA marks the Golden Knights third conference affiliation since joining the Division I ranks in The program originally joined the American South, which then became the Sun Belt. In 1992, the school joined the A-Sun. All-time, UCF is 3-8 against current C-USA squads. That 3-8 record includes a 2-0 showing against East Carolina. The squad last met a C-USA foe in 2002, beating Tulane (66-61) at the Green Wave s University Hoops Classic. UCF PICKED 5TH IN C-USA POLL According to a vote by the Conference USA head coaches, UCF was picked to finish in a tie for fifth in the league, along with Rice. The Golden Knights were selected behind Memphis (1), UAB (2), Houston (3) and UTEP (4). Trailing UCF was SMU (7), Southern Miss (8), Tulsa (9), East Carolina (10), Tulane (11) and Marshall (12). DEBUTS In the win over Rollins on Friday, six Golden Knights made their UCF debuts. Mike O Donnell started at point guard after sitting out last season after transferring from NC State. 4 freshmen - Drew Speraw, Jermaine Taylor and Kenrick Zondervan - also made their UCF debuts in the season-opening victory. SUNSHINE STATERS UCF s roster features five players from the state of Florida. Dave Noel (Boynton Beach), Mike O Donnell (Largo), Lavell Payne (Ft. Lauderdale), Drew Speraw (Oviedo) and Jermaine Taylor (Tavares) all hail from the Sunshine State. Jacob Loucks (Clearwater) is redshirting this year after transferring from the University of Mobile. A year ago, the squad had just two in-state players (Adam Picow, Albert Smidebush) on the roster. SUMMER VACATION This past summer, the Golden Knights toured Europe, playing exhibition games against professional squads. The UCF contingent visited Belgium, Holland and France. During the tour, the team posted a 4-1 mark. UCF s seven returning letterwinners, plus transfers Dave Noel and Mike O Donnell, were all eligible to play while overseas. Due to NCAA rules, incoming freshmen and transfers are not eligible to compete during summer tours. Josh Peppers paced the squad offensively in Europe, averaging 18.8 points to go with a team-best 7.4 rebounds per contest. Noel averaged 11.8 points, four assists and 2.2 steals a game. NATIONAL EXPOSURE The Golden Knights will appear on national television at least two times during the campaign. UCF s Jan. 28 contest at Memphis and Feb. 4 home game with UAB are both slated to air on CSTV. The contest with UAB will mark the first nationally televised home game in UCF s history. The Golden Knights will make numerous regional television appearances, including their Dec. 3 game at Florida which will be shown on Sun Sports. For the exhibition contest, 1,255 fans were in attendance, one of the top crowds in school history to witness a preseason game. A FUTURE GOLDEN KNIGHT UCF head coach Kirk Speraw announced on Nov. 9 that Tony Davis has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Knights. In the fall of 2007, construction on a new arena will be completed, giving the Golden Knights a new on-campus home. The convocation center will have seats for 10,000 spectators and will be built directly in front of the team s current facility. The venue will help UCF host Conference USA Championship events. Following construction of the new building, UCF Arena will be renovated and will house the men s and women s basketball offices along with a pair of basketball practice courts. Since arriving at the school in 1993, Speraw has posted numerous accomplishments: He has led UCF to all four of its trips to the NCAA Tournament. Speraw has coached in three straight conference title contests. He ranks second all-time at UCF with 196 victories and needs just four victories to reach the 200-career win mark. The Golden Knights have posted three straight 20-win seasons and have recorded four-consecutive winning campaigns. In , UCF won a conference regular season title for the first time in school history at the Division I level. Speraw has guided the Golden Knights to seven winning seasons - the school s only winning campaigns at the Division I level. Since , his teams have won 53 games in conference play. Speraw has coached 15 all-conference performers. He has coached the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year (Mark Jones in 1998) and the A- Sun Defensive Player of the Year (Dexter Lyons in 2004). In addition to success on the court, Speraw has also stressed excellence in the classroom. Forty-seven of his players have earned all-conference academic honors, including four in In 2004, Roberto Morentin earned CoSIDA Academic All-America District III honors. Speraw has seen many of his players go on to enjoy successful careers in the professional ranks. In 2005, Mark Jones played with the Orlando Magic. Former Golden Knights Ed Dotson, Ken Leeks, Dexter Lyons and Brad Traina are a few of Speraw s players who are competing overseas. Prior to arriving in Orlando in 1993, Speraw spent three seasons as an assistant under Lon Kruger at Florida. From , he was the head coach at Pensacola Junior College. In , his team posted a 31-7 mark and finished fifth nationally. That season, he earned NABC/Kodak National Junior College Coach of the Year honors. Before moving to the bench at PJC, he served as an assistant at Florida Southern from During his time at the school, the Moccasins went and made four appearances in the Division II NCAA Tournament. A native of Sioux City, Iowa, Speraw played at Iowa for head coach Lute Olson. He was a member of the Hawkeye squad that won the Big Ten title. Speraw began his coaching career at his alma mater, serving as a graduate assistant with Iowa s team that advanced to the Final Four.
