3 The Lewis University men s basketball team kicks off the campaign this Saturday (Nov. 15) at 2 p.m., as the Flyers travel to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to square off with Lake Superior State. The Flyers endured a grueling exhibition campaign that featured three contests against Division I opponents in Bradley, DePaul and culminating with a narrow six-point defeat against Illinois on Sunday, November 9th. Lake Superior State had just one exhibition contest and dropped a decision at the hands of No. 7 Michigan State on Monday, November 10th. Lakers guard Mark Morse scored a team-high 19 points, including fi ve threepointers. The Series: Lewis owns a 3-0 lead over the Lakers in their all-time series. In their last meeting, the Flyers earned the victory over LSSU, as Dustin Warfield knocked down the winning free throws with 34 seconds left in the game on November 16, Tracking 200: Lewis head coach Scott Trost needs 12 more wins to reach 200 wins during his 12 years as a head coach. Preseason Honors: Both Lewis seniors Brandon Dagans and Jason Genova earned preseason recognition, as Dagans was named to the Division II Bulletin All-American Team, while Genova earned Honorable Mention honors from the same publication, along with Street and Smith Honorable Mention honors. From Way Downtown: Genova, who has converted 167 three-pointers during his two-year career at Lewis, needs to knock down 23 more trifectas to break the school-record of 188 set by Rich Aigner ( ). From Way Downtown (Part Deux): Genova has knocked down at least one three-pointer in Lewis last 15 games dating back to January 26th against UW- Parkside. During that span, Genova is shooting 43.9% (43-for-98) from beyond the arc. Man In The Middle: According to conference websites, Lewis center Marty Strus is the third tallest player in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Signing Day: Lewis head coach Scott Trost announced on Thursday (Nov. 13) that he has inked Mineral Area College guard Brandon Hall to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Flyers beginning in Hall, who prepped at Simeon Academy in Chicago, was a backcourt mate of Chicago Bulls No. 1 pick Derrick Rose. 4 Lewis Men s Basketball Game Notes Now in his third season, Scott Trost was named the ninth head coach in Lewis University men s basketball history in April In two seasons at Lewis, Trost has re-established the Flyers as one of the top teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers fi nished the season 20-11, reaching the 20-win plateau for just the 14th time in program history. Trost led Lewis to the GLVC Championship game and an NCAA Tournament berth for the fi rst time since Following the season, Trost was named the 2008 IBCA Coach of the Year. In his fi rst season at Lewis, Trost guided the Flyers to a respectable overall record which inlcuded a 10-9 mark in the GLVC. The Flyers qualifi ed for the GLVC tournament for the fi rst time since 2004, bowing out to top-seeded Southern Indiana in the fi rst round. Prio to arriving at Lewis, Trost enjoyed a highly successful tenure at Illinois Wesleyan, posting a (.732) overall record and a (.714) mark in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) during his fi ve seasons as the helm. The Titans captured three consecutive CCIW titles ( ) and made four successive NCAA Division III Championship tournament appearances ( ) under his guidance. The Titans were 25-7 and fi nished third in the nation, beating Amherst in the NCAA tournament consolation game after being edged by eventual national champion Virginia Wesleyan in the semifi nals. Trost led Illinois Wesleyan to the Division III round of 16 in 2003 and Trost was named CCIW Coach of the Year in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Division III Coach of the Year the past four seasons. He coached two CCIW Most Outstanding Players, Keelan Amelianovich (2004) and Adam Dauskas (2005). Trost owns 11 years of experience and a (.631) overall record as a head coach. He tallied a ledger in four seasons at CCIW member Elmhurst, including a 16-9 mark in his fi nal year ( ). The Bluejays 10-4 CCIW record that season was the program s best conference showing up to that point. Prior to becoming head coach, Trost served three years as an Elmhurst assistant under Jim Whitesell, whose departure to become Lewis head coach in 1992 cleared the way for Trost to take over the top job. In Trost s fi nal season as assistant coach, the Bluejays were best in program history at the time - and advanced to the second round in their fi rst NCAA Division III Championship tournament appearance. Trost left Elmhurst in 1996 to become an assistant coach at the University of Michigan, where he served four seasons in that capacity before being promoted to associate head coach for the campaign. The Wolverines won the 1997 National Invitation Tournament, and the 1998 squad captured the inaugural Big Ten Tournament crown and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship tournament. Trost began his coaching career as an Illinois Wesleyan graduate assistant in the season. He was an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Minnesota State-Mankato the next two seasons before joining Whitesell s Elmhurst staff in A native of Appleton, Minn., Trost earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education at the University of Minnesota-Morris in 1985 and a Master of Arts degree at Illinois State University in Trost s Head Coaching Career Ledger Team Record (pct.)
