Through the non-conference season, the Maroon and Gold picked up three wins and accumulated three losses en route to a overall record. The Gophers will first meet with Michigan on Friday evening before traveling to East Lansing on Sunday afternoon. LAST TIME OUT After receiving votes in last week s NSCAA poll, the Golden Gophers traveled to Oxford, Miss. to participate in the first ever Rebel Classic hosted by the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). In Minnesota s first game of the tournament, the led the Rebels 2-0 early in the second half due to goals from sophomores Josee Stiever and Simone Kolander. Ole Miss fought back and Olivia Harrison had a standout performance for the Rebels, earning a hat trick and the win with the final goal in the 107th minute of play. After the double overtime loss on Friday evening, the Gophers faced Auburn on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers struck first with a goal from Courtney Schell before freshman Rachel McCloskey headed the ball past the keeper and into the back to the net off of a free kick from senior Becca Roberts. Both teams were anxious to gain the upper hand as the second half began with the teams knotted at one each. Ultimately, the Gophers would fall to Auburn as they scored two unanswered goals in the second half. THE OPPONENTS Minnesota meets Michigan in Ann Arbor for the second year in a row. The Wolverines are coming off a two shutout weekend after they defeated both Toledo and Central Michigan to conclude non-conference play and earned a overall record going into conference competition. The Gophers lead the all-time series with the last win for Minnesota coming last season as the Gophers defeated the then No. 7 Wolverines, 1-0, on Sept. 29 thanks to the go-ahead goal from Olivia Schultz. The Michigan State Spartans are coming off a noteworthy undefeated non-conference run as they prepare to open Big Ten play against No. 9 Wisconsin on Friday afternoon before the Gophers travel to East Lansing on Sunday afternoon. Last season the Spartans topped the Gophers in the opening weekend of play with a 3-0 victory. KICKING IT WITH KOLANDER Sophomore Simone Kolander is full speed ahead as she leads Minnesota with 4 goals and 5 assists with 13 shots (6 on target). Kolander has started all six games for the Maroon and Gold this season and topped her career high 2 goals and 5 assists in the first weekend of play. She has earned points in four of the Gophers six games and earned conference honors for her outstanding offensive play this season. NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP The sophomore class has stepped up in more ways than one for this young Gopher team. The sophomore class that boasts 5 starters and accounts for nearly half of the Gophers 50 points will be a forced to be reckoned with in the coming months and years. GOALKEEPER GLORY The Maroon and Gold saw two different goalkeepers last weekend as both Tarah Hobbs (27 saves) and Mara Dougherty (4 saves) stepped up in the face of adversity for the Golden Gophers. Hobbs, who is the reigning Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year, and Dougherty, who saw her first career start against Auburn last weekend, proved why they earned spots on the 2014 roster. ON THE ROAD AGAIN Minnesota will spend their second weekend in a row on the road when they travel to Michigan and Michigan State to open Big Ten play. Next weekend the Gophers will return to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium for their lone home game of the month to honor the senior class that includes Becca Roberts, Olivia Schultz, Katie Thyken and Taylor Wodnick. To close out the month, the Gophers will spend their last full weekend on the road as they travel to Indiana and Purdue to close out a full month on the road. FRESH FACES Thee nine freshman that were added to the 2014 roster have proved to be a tremendous addition. Squires and Rachel McCloskey have started each of the 4 matches for the Maroon and Gold, combining for five of the Gophers 14 goals. Seven of the nine freshman have seen playing time in a regular season game and four have contributed to the Gophers 42 points including Squires, McCloskey, Hannah Holm and Juliana Gernes. THE NOTORIOUS B1G The Big Ten Conference announced its 2014 Preseason Coaches Poll last week with the Gophers picked to finish eleventh in the conference behind new members Maryland and Rutgers who will both make their way to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in October. Penn State was picked to top the conference after finishing last season with a 7-4 conference record. One of their four losses came at the hands of the Gophers. With the announcement of the preseason coaches poll, the 2014 players to watch list was also revealed. It was no surprise that 2013 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year, Tarah Hobbs, was named among midfielders Josee Stiever and Katie. Last season, Thyken led the charge in terms of scoring with a career high tying 7 goals. In 2013, a Big Ten Conference record eight teams earned NCAA Tournament berths including Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn State and Ohio State while Iowa made their first ever post season run RECAP Minnesota posted an record last season while collecting four conferences wins in Stefanie Golan s second year as head coach of the Maroon and Gold. Wins and loses do not tell the entire story for the Gophers last season as they defeated then No. 7 Penn State, No. 17 Michigan and Wisconsin to punch their ticket into the first round of the NCAA Tournament. A first round loss to Texas Tech on their home pitch sent the Gophers home after reaching the tournament for the first time since 2010 when Minnesota reached the Sweet Sixteen. The Maroon and Gold return associate head coach and former Gopher defender Krystle Seidel as well as assistant coach Deana Waintraub-Stafford. New to the staff are MacKenzie Misel who will serve as volunteer assistant coach and Tam Strahota as director of soccer operations. Both new hires are former Gopher standouts.
